Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook’s last foray into the television medium was for an adaptation of a John Le Carré novel, so it should come as no surprise that his next venture is also a spy thriller adaptation. The Sympathizer is an incredibly involved miniseries with many moving pieces, but thanks to an incredible team behind and in front of the camera, the pieces mostly come together in spectacular fashion.
Adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, The Sympathizer tells the story of a North Vietnamese plant in the South Vietnamese army who flees to the United States as a refugee, kicking off a web of lies and deceit. Although it has the premise of an espionage thriller, there’s so much more here, and the result is thoroughly entertaining.

This is an excerpt from TV Guide Magazine’s 2022 Fall Preview issue. For more first looks at fall’s new shows, pick up the issue, on newsstands Thursday, August 25. How do you remake the classic 1980s neo-noir American Gigolo — a sexy star turn for Richard Gere as a high-end male escort, Julian Kaye, framed for the murder of a client — and have it feel brand new? For starters, toss out the movie’s happy ending. In this eight-episode series, Julian (We Own This City’s Jon Bernthal) serves 15 years in prison before Detective Sunday (Rosie O’Donnell), who first put him away, tells him he’s been exonerated by a hitman’s deathbed confession. (Credit: Hopper Stone/Showtime) “The idea that sparked everyone’s imagination was the notion of Julian as a kind of Rip Van Winkle who emerges into a world he doesn’t recognize,” says Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced...

The awards were announced Friday afternoon at the Beverly Hilton by the International Cinematographers Guild Publicists.
“Joker” won the feature film award and topped the publicity teams behind Netflix’s “The Irishman,” Universal’s “Us,” Sony’s “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood,” Paramount’s “Rocketman” and Disney-Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame.” The Joaquin Phoenix vehicle was a smash with more than $1 billion in global box office along with receiving 11 Academy Award nominations.

Oh, the irony! I’ve been covering Hollywood industry awards as a journalist for 30 years and now I’m nominated for the Press Award bestowed by Hollywood’s leading PR guild: Icg Publicists. It’s so gracious of them – thank you, huzzahs to all – but now I’ll get a toxic dose of what I report on all the time: nominee jitters.
Uh-oh: do my Hollywood industry peers really, really like me? Should I campaign aggressively? Rent out billboards on Sunset Boulevard? What should I wear on Feb. 7 when the winner is revealed at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in the same room where the Golden Globes are doled out?
Lucky for me, I know the drill. I’ve been nominated, and lost, twice in the past. Only 16 more defeats and I’ll be the Susan Lucci of the Publicists’ Award! So, please, save me: spread the word across town — Vote for Tom!

These projections are a reflection of Scott Feinberg’s personal impressions (from advance screenings), publicly available information (release dates, genres, talent rosters and teasers/trailers often offer valuable clues), historical considerations (how other films with similar pedigrees have resonated), precursor awards (some awards groups have historically correlated with the Academy more than others) and consultations with industry insiders (including fellow members of the press, awards strategists, filmmakers and awards voters).

Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monáe are the ultimate #SquadGoals in Hidden Figures — playing a trio of real-life African-American mathematicians battling sexism and racism while working at Nasa during the still-segregated 1960s to help the United States defeat Russian during the International Space Race.
Their characters — Katherine G. Johnson (Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Spencer), and Mary Jackson (Monáe) — were the women behind “Project Mercury,” which helped launch astronaut John Glenn into orbit.
It was one of the largest operations in history — and one that ultimately earned Johnson the Presidential Medal of Freedom from president Barack Obama on Nov. 16, 2015.

With AFI Fest in the rearview mirror and the holiday break just around the corner, THR’s awards analyst offers his latest assessment of the landscape.

20th Century Fox has released the first poster for their upcoming film, Hidden Figures, based on the women you don’t know behind the mission you do. This incredible untold story stars Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer & Janelle Monáe and hits theaters this January.
Check out the the trailer for Hidden Figures below.
Hidden Figures is the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe)-brilliant African-American women working at Nasa, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.
The cast also stars Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst, Jim Parsons, Mahershala Ali, Aldis Hodge and Glen Powell.

Degrassi: Next Class‘ Frankie Hollingsworth may be a lot of things — including a reluctant participant in a child pornography ring — but is she racist?
PhotosDegrassi‘s Top 17 Couples, Ranked: Eclare vs. Fimogen and More
She is if you ask the ladies of Northern Tech, whose predominately African-American volleyball team didn’t take too kindly to Frankie and Co.’s prank on the Season 2 premiere, a giant poster depicting members of the Northern Tech team as zoo animals.
I’m also concerned about how this will affect Frankie’s friendship with Shay, who was against retaliating in the first place. (The...

Chicago – Retreads from classics are often as weary as having to write that they are almost never as good as the original. And here we go again with the Ed Helms-led “Vacation,” which fails to capitalize on the beloved Chevy Chase film “National Lampoon’s Vacation” from 1983.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
Lacking the soul and whimsy of the original, this modern-day take on the Harold Ramis and John Hughes classic attempts to recreate the charm with actors who know how to read the lines but don’t embody the characters. And they’re forced to speak within a lazily written story that doesn’t add enough to justify coming back.
The decision by Ed Helms to take his family to Walley World – just like his father (Chevy Chase) did with his family – feels forced for the film to have a reason for being. It feels like it went down like this: “Hey,...

There was an interesting phenomenon in film this year that deserves a second look: many of the most recognizably “American” films of 2013 were directed by foreigners and, of those films, two feature almost entirely foreign casts.
First, to be clear, when I say “American” films, I’m not referring to stories that simply take place here; rather, I’m looking at films that are germane to the American narrative, to our history and cultural zeitgeist–really, Americana as opposed to just American. Films like The Great Gatsby, 12 Years a Slave, Dallas Buyers Club and Captain Phillips–which bring to life classic American literature, histories, and recent events–are the best examples. (Gravity is a tough sell for this list, but does fit insofar as it deals with the space program, a prominent feature of 20th century, Cold War America.) The second criterion, then, is to have a foreign director,...

Sci-fi TV
Tonight’s genre selection is, well, just one new show: Ghost Hunters International (“Witches’ Castle” in Austria, Syfy, 9 p.m.). It’s sandwiched between Ghost Hunters reruns. And tomorrow night offers two reruns on the CW: Smallville (“Requiem” with an injured Oliver Queen, 8 p.m.) and Supernatural (“Family Remains,” 9 p.m.).
Spike is going to rebroadcast NBC’s The Storm and Meteor mini-series next month. Note: NBC only debuts The Storm Part 2 (pictured) this Sunday. These Spike runs are part of a promo attempt to herald the cable network’s new TV series, Surviving The Disaster (which premieres in September). Thus, Spike is ballyhooing one disaster with two others (so far).
Heroes will have a two-hour, fourth season premiere September 21 on NBC. Robert Knepper (Prison Break) is joining the cast as a regular.
Did we mention Flashforward flashes into existence on ABC September 24?
