Last year, Fright Rags imagined what the day after Halloween might be like for Michael Myers in their short film November First. Now, one year later, another short film, Dead Neighbors, has been released by Fright Rags, this time imagining what might have inspired a young George A. Romero to go on to create Night of the Living Dead.
You can watch Dead Neighbors in its entirety below, and be sure to keep an eye out for Russell Streiner, who played Johnny in Night of the Living Dead. This time around, Streiner plays a cemetery groundskeeper, but he resurrects his iconic phrase, "They're coming to get you!"
"Everyone knows that George A. Romero is the father of the modern zombie movie and that his 1968 masterpiece inspired every ghoul-filled horror flick that followed. But what inspired Romero?...

A half-century ago, the living dead had their night, but for decades Night of the Living Dead has only been seen in murky, fuzzy versions. Directed by horror legend, and father of the zombie film, the late George A. Romero, the film is a great story of independent cinema: a midnight hit turned box-office smash that became one of the most influential horror films of all time.
Night of the Living Dead tells the deceptively simple story of a group of strangers trapped in a farmhouse and find themselves fending of a horde of recently dead flesh-eating ghouls. Romero’s claustrophobic vision of a late-1960s America literally tearing itself apart rewrote the rules of the horror genre, combining gruesome gore with acute social commentary, while quietly breaking ground by casting an African-American actor (Duane Jones) in its leading role.

“Upgraded Ghouls”
By Raymond Benson
For a film that’s been in public domain for decades and is available on dozens of different poor-quality DVD labels and free to download from Internet, it’s somewhat surprising that The Criterion Collection would pull out the stops to offer an undoubtedly pricier option to own the movie with this lavish 2-disk extravaganza of gore. (There is a precedent, however—Criterion did the same thing with the out-of-copyright Carnival of Souls.)
Don’t get me wrong… this is a very welcome roll-out. What’s unique about Criterion’s excellent package is that it features a new 4K digital restoration of the original theatrical release (not the previously go-to “30th Anniversary Edition” released years ago and that had been recut a little), and it’s supervised by co-screenwriter John A. Russo, sound engineer Gary R. Streiner, and producer Russell W.

The Silence of the Lambs and Night of the Living Dead, two bona fide horror gems, are officially joining the Criterion Collection.
Each film classic will receive a 4K restoration, along with scores of special features, which will be available from February 13th, 2018. Now how’s that for a Valentine’s Day treat?
On a more somber note, news of this re-release arrives at a difficult time for the horror community: Silence of the Lambs director Jonathan Demme passed away back in April, while George A. Romero, the undisputed king of zombies, died in July. Indeed, it was difficult losing two legendary filmmakers in the space of three months, but this posthumous recognition ensures their finest achievements are ushered into the pantheon of great cinema.
Each release will come with different bonus features – Lambs, for instance, includes audio commentary from Demme himself, along with Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins and screenwriter...

Last night, we reported on the sad news that Bill Hinzman had died yesterday. He was known for playing the cemetery zombie at the beginning of Night of the Living Dead. According to reports, Josephine Streiner also passed away this weekend:
“Born in 1918, Russ and Gary Streiner’s mother, Josephine Streiner, has passed away. Josephine played one of the ghouls in the film, and it was her car that Barbra wrecked while trying to escape Hinzman’s graveyard ghoul.”
We’ve been waiting for additional information and confirmation, and now have a note posted online by Gary Streiner:
“It’s truly a sad day for me after what was one of the higher days in my life yesterday. First was my sweet mother’s passing and then the news of Bill’s passing. My [heart] goes out to the Hinzman family and friends as well as my family and friends.

It's a really tearful day for fans of George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead. Just hours after announcing the passing of Bill Hinzman, even more sad news has come our way.
Born in 1918, Russ and Gary Streiner's mother, Josephine Streiner, has passed away. Josephine (pictured right) played one of the ghouls in the film, and it was her car that Barbra wrecked while trying to escape Hinzman's graveyard ghoul.
We here at Dread Central would like to take this time to offer our sincerest condolences to Josephine's friends, family, and constituents. Rest in peace, madam, and thank you for helping to feed the creative fires of a bunch of crazy filmmakers back in 1968 who would go on to create one of the most important films of our time.
Godspeed.

Godspeed.

Does this look familiar to you? It should. This is the Evans City Cemetery Chapel, which was the centerpiece for George Romero's seminal zombie flick, Night of the Living Dead. Unfortunately, the chapel - currently being used as a storage shed - has fallen into disrepair, and officials estimate it will cost $50,000 to restore it. Gary Streiner, a sound engineer on Night of the Living Dead is determined to save it. Check out his plan after the jump. Streiner is heading up a grassroots effort to raise enough money to restore the chapel. In addition to collecting donations, Streiner has arranged screenings, art shows, and zombie walks with proceeds going towards the restoration. He would like to see the chapel prettified...

As a community horror fans are not only the best and brightest but also the most giving. We know it's a trying time of the year, but it's also time to bring your attention to one hell of a good cause.
As per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:
Forty-four years ago, Gary Streiner was a 17-year-old kid standing in front of a ramshackle chapel building in an Evans City cemetery, helping to film a movie called "Night of the Living Dead." These days, Mr. Streiner still visits that spot in the cemetery, in front of the same ramshackle chapel. But now, he's the leader of a growing band of horror fans hoping to preserve the chapel building as a piece of movie history.
In September, the Evans City Cemetery Association granted Mr. Streiner's request to try to save the structure, giving him one year to raise the estimated $50,000 required to repair the...

Hey there acolytes young & old. Been awhile huh? Well, to be honest with all of you The Black Saint has been experiencing some physical difficulties as of late.
