George Schlatter's and Digby Wolfe's 1969 TV series "Turn-On" is one of the most notorious flops in TV history. On the night of its debut episode, an ABC affiliate in Cleveland, Ohio only allowed ten minutes of the 30-minute show to elapse before pulling it from the air, filling the remaining time with intermission-ready organ music. According to newspaper reports from the time, "Turn-On" received many, many angry phone calls. By the time "Turn-On" was to debut on the West Coast time zones, it had already been canceled. It's the only show in history to be canceled in the middle of its debut broadcast.
"Turn-On" was lambasted for being ribald and controversial -- there were numerous gags about sex and sexuality -- but more than anything, it was just off-putting and strange. The premise was high-concept: in the show's very first scene, a pair of engineers sit down at...

As fans of Mel Stuart's 1971 film "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory" can likely tell you, author Roald Dahl hated the film. His original 1964 novel, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," was, he felt, not a whimsical, sentimental story, but a Dickensian odyssey into a surreal landscape. Additionally, Dahl hated the casting of Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka, preferring British actor Spike Milligan. Too much was changed from his original text. Why adapt a book to screen, Dahl felt, if you're going to alter everything?
Despite the author's objections, Stuart's film became deeply beloved among the children who saw it in the '70s and '80s, and many grew up holding the film -- which has plenty of Dahl-like bitterness and horror regardless -- very close to their hearts. "Willy Wonka" eventually became part of the ever-churning nostalgia machine, and decades after its release, aging Gen-Xers were suddenly able...

Paul King's 2023 musical "Wonka" served as a prequel to Mel Stuart's 1971 film "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory," more than as an origin story extrapolated from Roald Dahl's 1964 novel "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." "Wonka" employed the same costumes, musical themes, and characters from Stuart's film, but suffused them with color, whimsy, and lightheartedness that was absent from Stuart's film. "Wonka," like the magical confections constructed by the titular chocolatey alchemist, is a fizzy, sweet delight. Despite being born of nostalgia-grabbing cynicism (recall how over-marketed Stuart's film has been to the world's jaded Gen-Xers), director King managed to build an enjoyable, featherweight romp set in a delightful world of powdery sugars and hidden romance. It's no wonder that "Wonka" has earned over half a billion dollars worldwide.

Roald Dahl's novel "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" was first published in 1963, and has been a perennial classroom favorite ever since. The story tells the tale of an impoverished, Dickensian moppet named Charlie who wins a sweepstakes held by the chocolate factory in his town. The chocolate factory, overseen by an eccentric recluse named Willy Wonka, produced sweets with eerie, magical powers; multi-flavored chewing gum caused its chewer to expand into a massive blueberry. That sort of thing. Of all the children who won Willy Wonka's sweepstakes, only Charlie survived the tour. Well, the other kids survived, but definitely the worse for wear.
Dahl's book was first adapted to a feature film in 1971, but that was only the first adaptation of many. The BBC adapted the book into a radio drama in 1983, and Zx Spectrum adapted it into a video game in 1985. There was a second video game...

A new take on Roald Dahl's beloved chocolatier Willy Wonka is hitting theaters this week courtesy of "Paddington" director Paul King. "Dune" star Timothée Chalamet throws on the top hat and purple coat as a young Wonka trying to find his way in an unfamiliar place while attempting to open his own chocolate shop. Of course, we all know that Wonka turns out to be one of the greatest and strangest candy makers in the whole world, thanks to Gene Wilder's stellar performance in the classic 1971 film "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory." So while Chalamet's Willy is still rising, Wilder's Wonka remains the king of candy, and that's why Rsvlts is throwing it back to the original movie for their new shirt collection.

Wonka, the phantasmagorical musical starring Timothée Chalamet as the world’s most famous chocolatier, opens in cinemas in time for the holiday season this week. The film, directed by Paul King of Paddington fame, arrives on the big screen with a lot of audience skepticism. We already have two very popular adaptations of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Roald Dahl’s most beloved novel, and the idea of a prequel following young Willy Wonka feels unnecessary given that the book isn’t exactly about him. Still, there is a reason that Dahl adaptations remain popular, even as the author long faced pushback for some of his more bigoted views.
People love Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, first published in 1964, because it’s as delicious as the confectionaries made by Wonka. The story of five varied children who win a contest to tour a secretive factory is cheeky, strange, occasionally grotesque,...

Paul King’s road to Wonka began with a tough choice between marmalade and chocolate.
After two beloved films about a marmalade-loving bear named Paddington, King opted to take on a prequel to Mel Stuart’s Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) instead of completing a Paddington trilogy of sorts. With Paddington having such extensive source material, King believes that the bear’s story wouldn’t necessarily feel complete after three films, so he took his feel-good sensibilities to the world that Roald Dahl originated in the 1964 children’s novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
“It was the right thing to do,” King tells The Hollywood Reporter. “And because there’s so much Paddington source material, you could make 50 Paddington movies. I’d be a hundred years old and still doing Paddington. If you could only make two or three films [out of the source material], then it might’ve been different. But by the end of the second film,...

Eyebrows were raised and much dismissive discourse took place on social media when it was revealed that current Hollywood favourite, Timothée Chalamet, would be donning the famous top hat and purple coat to play a young Willy Wonka in an new adaptation of the much loved Roald Dahll adventure.
Written by the dream team that brought us Paddington in 2014 and the absolutely delightful Paddington 2 in 2017, Wonka serves as a prequel to Mel Stuart’s 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory which starred Gene Wilder as the iconic chocolatier.
Young Willy Wonka dreams of opening his own chocolate shop to perfect an art handed to him by his late mother (Sally Hawkins). Newly arrived in town with a head full of dream and a top hat overloading with magical marvel, Willy is set upon by a number of duplicitous individuals who would rather not share their wealthy customers with him.

Paul King’s Paddington and Paddington 2 are funny, delightfully inventive, and free of the snarky humor that dominates most kiddie fare. With Wonka, the latest rendition of the adventures of Roald Dahl’s eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka, King offers more of the same. But in returning to the psychedelic, candy-fueled world that Dahl first introduced in 1964’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Wonka also diverges in tone from both the book and the two subsequent films by Mel Stuart and Tim Burton, respectively, and does so to great effect.
Perhaps no one can top Gene Wilder’s uncanny performance as Wonka in Stuart’s 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. Timothée Chalamet wisely doesn’t try to match the way that Wilder pivots from charming and merry to menacing and enraged on a dime, instead imbuing Wonka with a spiritedness befitting a prequel set years earlier, bringing a...

Two words: Young Wonka. This was the pitch from celebrated producer David Heyman to director Paul King at the end of their time working together on Paddington 2, according to King. “I think it was literally our last sign-off,” he smiles. Food for thought, right?
Several years and a pandemic later, their fruitful collaboration is finally making its way to screens in a whirlwind of color and candy.
“It was definitely the idea to try to make something that would be warming and festive at Christmas,” King says, but he’s quick to acknowledge that the world we live in today is not the same as the pre-covid time of the film’s conception. It’s a production that faced obstacles out of King and Heyman’s hands, but in a bit of serendipity, the movie might just have arrived at exactly the time it was needed.

Updated Exclusive: Warner Bros’ feature musical Wonka arrived on three-week-out tracking this week with a revised industry projection of $35M-$40M when it opens on Dec. 15.
That start is in the vicinity of Sony’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle ($36.2M) which opened before Christmas on Dec. 20. While going pre-Christmas is always risky for any movie, family branded pics are quite safe and remain a powerful distraction for families who are still in the throes of shopping.
The Timothée Chalamet movie is great with women right now, under and over 25. It's fair to wonder just how "necessary" a movie like "Wonka" truly is. Billed as a prequel to the 1971 Mel Stuart-directed and Gene Wilder-starring classic "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," the upcoming film stars Timothée Chalamet in the title role of a story about discovering how, as the marketing puts it, "Willy became Wonka" ... which I can honestly say is a question that never once crossed my mind before. Still, at the very least, all my fellow sweet-tooths out there are guaranteed to get their fill of chocolatey goodness, which is apparently something that translated to the actual production of the film, as well.
We previously wrote about how the filming of "Wonka" required the presence of an actual, on-set chocolatier to help bring that extra layer of verisimilitude to the cast. However, as it so happens, that went further than we originally thought. Not only did...

Netflix typically refuses to release its actual viewership numbers to the public, making its weekly top-10 lists a fascinating peek into how streaming services actually operate. Netflix may pour millions into their original programs, but their ten most popular films or TV tend to (at least partly) be 25-year-old movies experiencing a seemingly random renaissance. Case in point: one of the hottest films on Netflix right now is Danny DeVito's 1996 family film "Matilda" based on the 1988 novel by Roald Dahl.
"Matilda," critically acclaimed upon its release, is about the titular young girl (Mara Wilson) who lives with caustic, greedy, tacky, and abusive parents. Her new school is a bleak, Dickensian nightmare overseen by the bestial, cruel Mrs. Trunchbull (Pam Ferris). “Wonka” director Paul King worked with Hugh Grant on “Paddington 2,” but he knew getting the actor to play an Oompa Loompa in the upcoming Warner Bros. musical would take extra convincing. So King wrote Grant a letter in which he said the actor was great at playing “washed-up old hams,” which is exactly what King was looking for in his hunt for the perfect Oompa Loompa actor.
“I was enchanted by the idea of these impossibly tiny beings, far smaller even than the child-sized me,” King said. “The voice and the attitude of the Oompa Loompa came from revisiting the books – long songs full of humor, sarcasm, superiority and scorn. So it was really just thinking about that character – someone who can be a real shit. And I went, ‘Ah, Hugh [Grant]!’ Because he’s the funniest, most sarcastic shit that I’ve ever met!”

Paul King, director of Wonka, is teasing the film and Timothée Chalamet’s singing voice. The filmmaker compared Chalamet to Bing Crosby.
“[Chalamet]’s got a beautiful singing voice,” King said in an interview with Total Film magazine. “The person it reminded me of was Bing Crosby. There’s quite a range, because it does go from a couple of bigger, showstopper-y sort of things, to moments of real, pure emotion and he can do it all… I’m going to sound like a crazed fan.”
Although the film has musical numbers, King doesn’t want to classify the movie as a musical saying, “The Oompa Loompas sing a lot in the book, and Dahl always uses poetry. But I didn’t want it to just become a musical where people are singing dialogue to each other for no discernible reason. I felt like it was more like a movie with songs than a musical.

The official trailer for Warner Bros.’ “Wonka” gave moviegoers a first look at Timothée Chalamet’s singing and dancing chocolatier. It also dropped a surprise at the very end: Hugh Grant sporting green hair and orange skin as an Oompa Loompa. How did such casting come about? Thank “Wonka” director Paul King, who previously cast Grant as the villainous Phoenix Buchanan in “Paddington 2.”
“Going back to the book, and reading all those poems, and hearing [the Oompa Loompas’] voice as a very sort of cynical, sarcastic, cruel, funny, but wicked voice, I went, ‘Oh… That’s sort of a bit like Hugh!’” King told Empire magazine. “It was a real light bulb moment – you go, ‘Hugh Grant’s an Oompa-Loompa! Yes please! Merry Christmas, with a bow on it.’”

Paul King is no stranger to exploring the fantastical world of a children’s storybook. After two Paddington films, the dark whimsy of Roald Dahl proved to be an exciting new challenge for the director, who has imagined an origin story for the iconic character of Willy Wonka. In the first trailer for Wonka, in theaters Dec. 15, audiences get a glimpse of this youthful version of the chocolatier, embodied with enthusiastic verve by Timothée Chalamet. It also teases a vast supporting cast that includes Keegan-Michael Key, Rowan Atkinson, Sally Hawkins,...

Timothée Chalamet is headed to the land of pure imagination, as the Academy Award-nominated actor has just been cast as a young Willy Wonka in a new origin story film from Warner Bros. and the Roald Dahl Company. According to Deadline, while the film is based upon the characters originally created by Roald Dahl in his novel (that also inspired the 1971 film from Mel Stuart), this one will focus on a young Willy Wonka before he opened his famed chocolate factory. Warner Bros. confirmed to IndieWire a release date is currently set for March 17, 2023.
The film will be directed by Paul King (the director of “Paddington” and “Paddington 2”) from the screenplay he wrote with Simon Farnaby. Farnaby previously wrote the screenplay for “Paddington 2.” David Heyman is producing via his Heyday Films. Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)
When it comes to Roald Dahl adaptations, there’s Wes Anderson‘s, and then there’s everyone else’s. Stop-motion animation was a logical step for one of the movies’ great miniaturists, and the animal-kingdom setting softens the harshness of Dahl’s worldview, which on screen often hardens into grotesquerie and cynicism. Like most of Anderson’s movies, “Mr. Fox” hides serious melancholy beneath its lacquered surface, just as Dahl’s whimsy mingles with the macabre.
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)
Watched with adult eyes, Mel Stuart’s candy-coated adventure looks awfully threadbare in spots, but the movie got one thing gloriously, unequivocally right in casting Gene Wilder as its impish misanthrope. Like an Everlasting Gobstopper, Wilder’s always changing, from light to dark, sweet to sour, and if the movie sometimes struggles to keep up with him, Stuart was...

Exclusive: Warner Bros is looking to bolster the role of a character or two in its new Willy Wonka film...
Disney is currently courting Paul King, champion director of The Mighty Boosh, two Paddington movies, and Bunny & The Bull, to take charge of their new, largely live-action Pinocchio remake.
King has certainly got an aptitude for integrating childlike CG leads into sometimes whimsical, rich and multi-layered worlds, so I can see why they studio would be so keen. Beyond that, however, King is a witty and imaginative storyteller with real skill in honing nicely-shaped, smart and compelling narratives. That's the really important bit. Especially when it comes to making a film that could live up to, or at least stand respectably alongside, the original Disney Pinocchio. What a truly astonishing piece of film craft it is.

There's a bunch of epic movie props that have recently gone up for auction from Profiles in History that seriously hardcore geek collectors will want to get their hands on.
The actual Skywalker lightsaber that was used in A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back will be going up for auction and is expected to sell from between $150,000 and $250,000! That's a lot of freakin' money. But there's some Star Wars fan out there who is willing to fork over that kind of cash for it.
The lightsaber prop was in the possession of producer Gary Kurtz for years, and he's also including a personalized letter to certify authenticity.
As cool as that lightsaber is, one of the things that I'm most excited about going up for auction is the armor Bill Paxton wore in Aliens. I've always loved that Colonial Marine armor and that fact that this is the...

The trailer for the pair’s bizarre remake of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory has caused online ire but what other films should they also stay well away from?
Tom and Jerry: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is a weird film. It’s a cheaply animated, near shot-for-shot remake of the beloved 1971 Mel Stuart movie – containing recognisable scenes, likenesses and backgrounds – that also happens to star Tom and Jerry, the cartoon characters so unsuitable for today’s climate that compilations of their cartoons now have to come with disclaimers where Whoopi Goldberg apologises for how racist they are.

Once again, Wamg attended the 2017 Turner Classic Movie Film Festival in Hollywood, and as always, it did not disappoint!
Ahhh…so many movies, so little time to cover everything, but here are some highlights of my favorite movies of this year’s festival.
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)
Shown poolside at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, this classic was perfect for opening night. Brightly colored inflatable balls and lights floated in the pool like some of Wonka’s best candies as guests enjoyed snacks and cocktails on a beautiful spring evening. In attendance for this special screening were some of the cast members of the original movie. Miss Veruca Salt herself, Julie Dawn Cole; Mike Teevee, also known as Paris Themmen; and one of the original Oompaloompas, Rusty Goffe.
Along with host Illeana Douglas, they recounted some great memories of being on the set of the film in Germany more than 45 years ago.

Origin stories are always a slam dunk with audiences. Seriously, go through IMDb and just try to find one example of a prequel detailing how a famous movie character came to be that isn’t considered an instant classic. Don’t bother trying. You can’t do it! That’s why it’s great news that Warner Bros.’ upcoming Willy Wonka film is probably going to provide the much-needed backstory of Roald Dahl’s beloved candy magnate.
In an interview with /Film, producer David Heyman revealed the slimmest slivers of info on the the inchoate film. “It’s not a remake. They’ve done two films, quite different,” he explained, referring to Mel Stuart’s 1971 classic and Tim Burton quixotic 2015 attempt at a reboot. “But it’s possibly an origin story. Roald Dahl Rankings by Sam Adams Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) When it comes to Roald Dahl adaptations, there’s Wes Anderson‘s, and then there’s everyone else’s. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971) Watched with adult eyes, Mel Stuart’s candy-coated adventure looks awfully threadbare in spots,...

Wilder’s role in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory resonated with children everywhere – but also in the hearts and minds of generations of chefs
The birth of Willy Wonka predated Gene Wilder’s embodiment of him by seven years. Dahl’s book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory first appeared in 1964; Mel Stuart’s retitled adaptation came in 1971. But with Wilder’s passing last week, the world also mourned the passing of the man synonymous with that of the mercurial candy man.
Widely seen and deeply felt, Wilder’s portrayal of the man behind the world’s strangest chocolate factory resonated with children everywhere – but also in the hearts and minds of inchoate pastry chefs who were inspired by the edible teacup and everlasting gobstopper. Rarely mentioned as a food movie, per se, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory inspired generations to enter into a world of pure imagination.

Of the many memorable characters created by the late Gene Wilder, his titular role in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory carries a specific magical weight - particularly for those who acted alongside him, like former child actress Denise Nickerson (aka Violet Beauregarde). "He created an iconic character," Nickerson tells People of being in the film with Wilder, who died of complications from Alzheimer's at the age of 83. "He did the majority of that himself, his little idiosyncrasies [in character], kicking the ball, whipping the cane, stuff like that, that was all him." The former child actress, who was 13 during filming, remembers...

It's fairly common knowledge that Roald Dahl despised Mel Stuart's Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, the 1971 film adaptation of his classic children's book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Not only was he averse to Wilder's performance as eccentric candy-peddler Willy Wonka (the author wanted Spike Milligan for the role), he was irritated that it placed more emphasis on Wonka at the expense of the book's good-hearted hero Charlie Bucket (Peter Ostrum). (For the record, Dahl allegedly hated most adaptations of his books, at one point terming Nicolas Roeg's big-screen interpretation of The Witches "utterly appalling.") So perhaps it's fitting that Tim Burton, who directed the 2005 re-adaptation of Dahl's novel, similarly found the 1971 version lacking, telling BBC News in an interview: "I don't want to crush people's childhood dreams, but the original film is sappy." But while Burton's film proved very successful both critically and commercially -- it grossed...
