We all know how the story of Blockbuster ends. The movie rental chain, which once had 9,000 stores across the US, filed for bankruptcy in 2010, and its empire crumbled quickly after that. However, there's a lesser-known footnote to that story: America's very last Blockbuster is actually still open. The store - located in Bend, Oregon - was the subject of the 2020 documentary "The Last Blockbuster" and now Netflix's fictionalized "Blockbuster" series.
The show stars Randall Park as store manager Timmy Yoon, who is desperately trying to keep his location afloat as the business crashes down around him. And just like Netflix's "Blockbuster" has its roots in real life, Park also shares a special connection to the story. "A lot of what Timmy goes through, it was very resonant to me," Park tells Popsugar. "My dad owned a one-hour photo store, which is another industry that kind of saw its demise due to the digital age.

The 2022 Sundance Film Festival may have already passed, but let’s not forget about 2021. Some films take a minute to find their feet, find their distributor, and or find a window that best suits that film’s release. Written and directed by Kate Tsang, “Marvelous And The Black Hole” seems to be one of those kinds of movies.

With only a couple of clicks of the dial and a little dash of hybrid vigor, the hackneyed can be made fresh again, a point proven by Tran Quoc Bao’s silly and special little kung fu comedy “The Paper Tigers.” Balancing the naive structure of an old Shaw Brothers movie (a vengeance mission with an escalating series of fights en route to the Big Boss showdown) with the kind of male-midlife-comedy schtick that bought Judd Apatow a house or six, Tran’s irresistibly good-humored debut is a diverting blend of Hong Kong and Hollywood that delivers, on a slender, Kickstarter-enhanced budget, a rousing roundhouse hug to both traditions.
Danny (Alain Uy), Hing (Ron Yuan) and Jim (Mykel Shannon Jenkins) have become estranged in the 25 years since they were “The Three Tigers,” disciples of kung fu master Sifu Cheung (Roger Yuan) — scenes that play out with younger actors in lovingly re-created garage VHS footage.

Like the warring Japanese dojos depicted throughout the Karate Kid franchise, a growing disconnect exists between those who wish to learn a fighting style as a means of physical and emotional growth and those who simply seek the ability to punish their adversaries without mercy. It’s respect and honor versus strength and superiority—something even the most devout and sacred of Chinese Kung Fu masters like Sifu Cheung (Roger Yuan) can’t always instill in their pupils. No matter how much they strive to trust the younger generation’s capacity to protect what they’ve learned as a tool, the allure of morphing it into a weapon for profit is often too much to ignore. It’s why he retired after his three disciples left. The disappointment was too much to bear.

Hey, it worked! A comedy with all the right pieces, which were pushed and pulled into all the wrong places, got the time to learn, adjust, and grow. Season 1 of Nicholas Stoller and Francesca Delbanco’s “Friends From College” was a messy disappointment, making Season 2 is a charming surprise. It’s almost like time, patience, and talent are … virtues? Like TV creators often need a little trial and error to crack their projects? Like this is how TV is supposed to be made?

Netflix has dropped the Season 2 trailer for Friends From College ahead of the comedy series’ January 11 premiere.
It’s been a year since Ethan (Keegan-Michael Key) & Sam’s (Annie Parisse) affair was exposed to the four other friends – including Lisa (Cobie Smulders), Ethan’s wife – and the friend group is still fractured. No one has heard from Lisa, Ethan has been living a repentant year of writing a Ya novel, and Sam has been trying to repair her marriage with her husband Jon.
But with Max’s (Fred Savage) wedding coming up, the friends won’t be able to avoid each other much longer. Between the engagement party, bachelor party, and wedding, the six will have to overcome the destruction in their past and figure out how to function as a friend group again. Will they be able to move forward or will they regress back to their old destructive patterns once again?...

Married writers Nick Stoller and Francesca Delbanco were inspired by their own group of pals from Harvard to create the Netflix comedy “Friends From College.” But they weren’t prepared for the sting of the show’s bad reviews.
“People were saying, ‘these characters are just so horrible, hanging out with them is like crawling over broken glass,'” Delbanco said. “It made us look in the mirror and think, ‘oh God, is that what the world thinks of us?'”
Season 1 of “Friends From College,” released July 2017, ultimately averaged a disappointing 44 score on Metacritic and deemed just 23% “fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes. IndieWire called the show a “mess.”
“I was honestly quite surprised at the critical response,” Stoller said. “I didn’t think we’d be winning Emmys with this, but I thought the reaction would be generally positive.”
Still, viewers apparently binged all eight episodes enough for Netflix to renew it.

Sarah Chalke is expanding her relationship with Netflix, signing on for a season-long major recurring role on the upcoming eight-episode second season of the Internet network’s comedy series Friends From College.
Created/executive produced by Nicholas Stoller and Francesca Delbanco, Friends From College stars Keegan-Michael Key, Cobie Smulders, Annie Parisse, Nat Faxon, Fred Savage and Jae Suh Park as a sextet of friends from Harvard in interwoven and oftentimes complicated relationships with one another who face down their 40s.
Chalke will play Merrill Morgan, a Park Avenue Wasp personified. She’s a divorced mother of a teenage boy named Prescott, and she is Alpha to everyone she meets — beautiful, direct, confident; Gwyneth Paltrow minus the West Coast mellowness. She and Nick Ames (Faxon) briefly dated in college, and in the first episode of the season they reconnect at a party. The friends all agree that she and Nick were...

"While they're doing a lot of things that aren't necessarily nice to each other, they also do legitimately love each other and there is a great deal of warmth between them." For Smulders,...

1. “Friends From College” Season 1 (available July 14)
Why Should I Watch It? Ivy League graduates are largely insufferable, but Netflix is challenging that notion by assembling the most likable cast in recent memory to play a bunch of Harvard alumni reuniting in their late 30s. (Ok, so this list pretty much proves that all famous Ivy Leaguers are awesome, but you know the non-famous are impossible bores. No? Just me? Damn it.) Anyway, “Friends From College” brings together Keegan-Michael Key (Ethan), Cobie Smulders (Lisa), Annie Parisse (Sam), Nat Faxon (Nick), Fred Savage (Max), and Jae Suh Park (Marianne) — plus Kate McKinnon and Ike Barinholtz as guest stars — in a comedic exploration of old friendships from the creative minds of Nicholas Stoller (“Neighbors: Sorority Rising,” “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”) and Francesca Delbanco. Sounds like an ideal mixer, no? Good — at least we can agree on something.

I honestly can’t remember a show that squanders a talented cast as thoroughly as Netflix’s new comedy Friends From College does. It’s borderline criminal.
There’s no question the show (releasing Friday, July 14) is blessed with an all-star team of comedy actors: Keegan-Michael Key! Cobie Smulders! Fred Savage! Billy Eichner! Nat Faxon! Heck, you could just put these guys in a room together and film them joking around without a script, and it’d be worth watching. But here, they’re saddled with unlikable characters, a distasteful infidelity plot and an erratic tone that never quite finds itself.
