What happens to your Facebook account when you pass away? What about Twitter, email, and all of your other online accounts? That question is up for debate right now in New Hampshire, as State Representative Peter Sullivan has introduced legislation regarding where control of your online identity goes after you die.
According to New Hampshire's Wmur, the proposed bill would see control of a person's online accounts go to the executor of their estate. Citing the crude remarks directed at Canadian teen Amanda Todd, on her Facebook profile, after she committed suicide, Sullivan says, "This would give the families a sense of closure, a sense of peace. It would help prevent this form of bullying that continues even after someone dies and nobody is really harmed by it."
Currently, Facebook does have a way to disable the profile of a deceased family member, however the system isn't fool proof. Recently,...

Margin Call
Directed by J.C. Chandor
Written by J.C. Chandor
2011, USA
It’s taken a while – almost four years by my calendar – but eventually the dire progenitors of the age of austerity seem to have finally percolated into the emissions of the dream factory. Whilst the likes of The Company Men, Up In The Air and even Horrible Bosses offer obtuse takes on the slow disintegration of the current financial ideology, zeroing in the individual symptoms rather than the brooding cancer at the core, after the Oscar success of Inside Job the path seems clear for a fictional tale on the 2008 commercial devastation foisted on the world by the 1% and their ambitious acolytes. I’ve always found this cabalistic world immensely fascinating, having worked at one of these firms for a few years back in the noughties any audit of the seductive world of elite commerce is destined to broker my interest,...

The seemingly endless wait for the Syfy summer schedule is finally over! There is good news and bad, and one thing that is both good and bad. Let’s start with that: the Eureka Season Finale. We love Eureka, so every episode is good news; the fact that it’s a series finale, not so much. Mark your calendars – and have plenty of Kleenex in stock – for July 16 at 9/8c. Right after Comic-Con, which is early this year. We’ll see if that means a panel or not.
The good news: Warehouse 13 and Alphas return on July 23. The hmmm news is that Lost Girl will move to Fridays at 10 on July 20. Hey That’S Haven’S Spot. So Where The Heck Is Haven? Admittedly we had a head’s up that Haven would be pushed to fall when we learned that the DVDs for Season 2 weren’t being released until September but Argh.

Based on the collapse of Lehman Brothers during the financial meltdown of 2008, this cautionary tale short-sells us on excitement
Margin Call (2012)
Director: J C Chandor
Entertainment grade: C
History grade: B+
During the global financial crisis of September 2008, Lehman Brothers – the fourth-largest bank in the Us – filed for bankruptcy.
Finance
It's just another day in 2008 for Margin Call's unnamed investment bank, which is based on Lehman Brothers. Profits are down and 80% of the staff on the trading floor are being laid off. Among those cut is Eric Dale (Stanley Tucci), head of risk management. As he is ushered out by a security guard, he slips a key drive to his erstwhile minion Peter Sullivan (Zachary Quinto). "I was working on something, but they wouldn't let me finish it," he hisses. "Be careful." Peter takes a look, and quickly realises Unnamed Investment Bank Based on Lehman Brothers is so far...

A downbeat drama set in a Wall Street trading house during the 2008 meltdown that resists the flashiness of the traditional high finance movie
Writer-director Jc Chandor's tense whitecollar drama is a sober corrective to what can only be described as Hollywood's "Gordon Gekko" approach to high finance: ie, making it notionally horrible, but still insisting on how super-sexy and exciting it is really. This film is inspired by the 2008 meltdown, and set in a fictional, embattled trading firm carrying out brutal layoffs. One of the victims is middle-aged financial analyst Eric Dale (Stanley Tucci) who, before being escorted out of the building, bequeaths top-secret research to young brainiac Peter Sullivan (Zachary Quinto), revealing that due to its toxic assets, the whole firm could go entirely bankrupt at any moment. Icily resolute top brass, played by Paul Bettany, Kevin Spacey and a splendidly leonine Jeremy Irons, convene an all-night crisis...

Unlike Charles Ferguson’s Oscar-winning documentary Inside Job that made your blood boil at the sheer gall of the games played financial institutions and leading persons involved, ex-Merrill Lynch employee and writer-director J.C. Chandor’s new thriller serves a token of sweet torment on the money-grabbing scoundrels that kicked off the financial crisis.
It’s 2008, and after sweeping redundancies are announced at an investment bank on Wall Street, outgoing risk management boss Eric Dale (Stanley Tucci) hands a Usb drive with an unfinished project on it to junior risk analyst Peter Sullivan (Zachary Quinto), saying “be careful”. After finishing the project that same night, Sullivan horrifyingly discovers that trading will soon exceed the historical volatility levels used by the firm to calculate risk, and if mortgage-backed securities decrease by 25 per cent, the firm will suffer a loss greater than its market capitalisation. The plan of action that brings in senior...

The confident cinematic debut of writer-director Jc Chandor, an experienced maker of commercials, Margin Call is the best fictional treatment of the current economic crisis. It's altogether superior to Oliver Stone's hollow Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps and in the same class as Charles Ferguson's revealing, piercingly intelligent documentary Inside Job. In fact, it stands up to comparison with the 1992 film of David Mamet's magnificently squalid play Glengarry Glen Ross, which in many ways it resembles, not least in featuring a peerless ensemble cast that includes Kevin Spacey. Glengarry Glen Ross takes place during a couple of days in a seedy provincial branch of a national company where desperate salesmen peddle worthless real estate. Margin Call, also set over some 36 hours or so, initially appears to be located in an altogether more honourable and affluent place, the Manhattan headquarters of a respected investment bank. In the first decade of this century, rocket scientists who ruled the back rooms of Wall Street discovered something they touted as a real Philosopher's Stone. Through financial alchemy, they created Frankenstein's monster. This monster was named Collateralized Debt Obligation (Cdo). Cdo's were created using something known as The Formula. The Formula theorized that packages of mortgages could be mashed together and sliced apart into "good" parts and "bad" parts. The problem is that The Formula relied on a base set of assumptions that history shows were faulty to the core.

"Sure to be drowned out by the drum circles at Occupy Wall Street, writer-director Jc Chandor's lifeless Margin Call depicts roughly 36 hours at an unnamed Manhattan investment firm at the dawn of the 2008 financial freak-out," begins Melissa Anderson in the Voice. "Chandor's debut feature audaciously asks us to empathize with obscenely overpaid risk analysts and their bosses, a gambit that fails not only because of what's happening at Zuccotti Park, but largely because his characters are little more than mouthpieces for blunt speechifying and Mamet-like outbursts."

It would be the ultimate stroke of lucky timing, as the Occupy Wall Street movement continues to gain momentum, for a film to come along that excoriates the titans of finance, painting red and giving horns to every well-pressed white collar. And yes, "Margin Call" does few favors for many of the derivative-swapping traders and bankers involved in the 2008 economic collapse. But writer/director Jc Chandor's debut film largely sets its sights on the environment that allowed fiscal impropriety to take root -- while searching for humanity in decision makers that helped bring down the world economy.

Margin Call is a night in the life of a group of poor schmucks who work at multi-billion dollar investment firm. Set in the early stages of the 2008 crisis, the film revolves around the events following the discovery of an error in a predictive algorithm (or whatever) the company has been using to package stocks to trade as a single entity (or something).
We enter the film on a downsizing day, and one of the bigger fish in the companies risk management division, Eric Dale (Stanley Tucci) is being let go, along with most of the people who work on his floor. On his way out, he hands a flash drive to a young hotshot at the firm, Peter Sullivan (Zachary Quinto), and tells him to take a look at it. It's something he's been working on, but the firm won't let him finish it. He also tells him to be careful.

Margin Call is a complex ensemble drama, a timely greed-culture morality play taking place within a 24 hour period at a major financial firm. It’s an interesting look at how and why cut-throat traders allowed a catastrophic financial event to take place right under their noses. Margin Call is a good film that stays on message and doesn’t get distracted with subplots and romance but its energy level doesn’t quite match that of the world in which it’s set. Margin Call opens with an unnamed, high-powered brokerage firm laying off a substantial percentage of its staff including Eric Dale (Stanley Tucci), the head of their risk management department. As he’s shown the door, he tries to explain that a major meltdown is in the cards but his pleas fall on deaf ears (and they’ve killed his phone). Before leaving, he hands incriminating data over to...

It.s tough enough wearing one hat on a film set, but now, seemingly more than ever, actors are donning two or more, whether it be both actor and producer, actor and director or just about any combination of titles for that matter. In Zachary Quinto.s case, he starred in and produced Margin Call via his company, Before the Door. Quinto is Peter Sullivan, a young analyst in a New York City investment bank.s risk management department. When his boss, Eric (Stanley Tucci) gets the boot amongst many of his co-workers during a mass downsizing effort, Eric leaves an unfinished project for Peter. Turns out, the companies job cuts are the least of its problems. When Peter fills in the holes of Eric.s work, he discovers an error that could not only bring the company down, but the whole economy. While J.C. Chandor.s script certainly ...

There's been a lot of coverage in the world of real news about what's been happening in New York City (and around the world) with "Occupy Wall Street," which might make it the perfect time for a movie like J.C. Chandor's Margin Call , a Wall Street thriller set during the day leading up to the 2008 economic crash that has put our country into what seems like a never-ending recession. Having premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival, it stars Zachary Quinto ("Heroes," Star Trek ) as Peter Sullivan, a financial analyst at a high-powered Wall Street firm who discovers an error in a formula his company has been using to determine trades, something that could bring the entire financial world crumbling down around them. Over the course of 24 hours, we watch as...

There is no doubt that the state of the economy has seen better days. But given that our economy is in such shambles, it does give inspiration to some great movies. Margin Call, a movie that made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival this year, is just one of those movies and now Yahoo! Movies has a trailer for your viewing pleasure. This film has quite a stellar cast that consists of Zachary Quinto, Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, Penn Badgley, Simon Baker, Demi Moore and Stanley Tucci.

Margin Call Trailer. J.C. Chandor‘s Margin Call (2011) movie trailer stars Zachary Quinto, Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, and Penn Badgley. Margin Call‘s plot synopsis: “Set in the high-stakes world of the financial industry, Margin Call is a thriller entangling the key players at an investment firm during one perilous 24-hour period in the early stages of the 2008 financial crisis. When entry-level analyst Peter Sullivan (Zachary Quinto) unlocks information that could prove to be the downfall of the firm, a roller-coaster ride ensues as decisions both financial and moral catapult the lives of all involved to the brink of disaster.”
This film looks far better than Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps. It would be nice to see a business movie where the business people do not talk down to the audience.

Debuting at Sundance this past January, J.C. Chandor‘s Margin Call managed to get picked up by Lionsgate, and the first trailer for it has now arrived from Yahoo! (via FirstShowing). Taking place over one day at an investment bank, the movie follows the company as they go through financial panic when a math genius realizes that the company’s debts are beyond their control. It has an impressive cast, which includes Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, Zachary Quinto, Simon Baker, Demi Moore, and Stanley Tucci.
The trailer is clearly trying to sell this as a thriller, which some have described it as, but the problem is that they’re making it look like a more traditional one — as if it’s about somebody who goes around murdering people. As a result, this comes off as trying just a little too hard to sell a movie to an audience...

The new theatrical trailer has been released for the indie film Margin Call which has a great cast of actors that includes Zachary Quinto, Kevin Spacey, Michael Nardelli, Carla Gugino and Stanley Tucci. I haven't seen the film yet but our own Ben P has, and here's what he had to say in his review,
Margin Call is full of really solid performances from every member of the cast. Kevin Spacey does some great work as a manager in the company and provides the backbone of the emotional connection for the audience; we can feel the weight of the company's decision sitting on his shoulders throughout the movie. Stanley Tucci was excellent in a small role as the man who basically discovers the cracks in the system and, after a great scene reminiscent of Jason Reitman's Up in the Air, passes his knowledge on to up-and-comer Zachary Quinto, who...

"It gets ugly in a hurry." Time to take a look at one of my favorite films of Sundance, the indie thriller Margin Call, written & directed by J.C. Chandor, about a 24 hour period revolving around the financial crisis - as boring as that sounds, it's actually pretty damn good. The film stars just about everyone: Zachary Quinto, Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, Penn Badgley, Simon Baker, Demi Moore and Stanley Tucci. Roadside Attractions has debuted the trailer and I highly suggest checking it out, I'm a fan. The dialogue may be a bit cheesy, but it works well in the film and it's a great thriller, I recommend it. Watch the official trailer for J.C. Chandor's Margin Call, via Yahoo: You can also watch the Margin Call trailer in High Defintion on Yahoo When analyst Peter Sullivan unlocks information that could prove to be the downfall of the firm,...

Lionsgate has released the first trailer for the financial thriller 'Margin Call,' and based on what we've seen, it's one of those films that will just get your blood boiling. The story centers on the key people at an investment bank during a 24-hour period before just the 2008 financial crisis, and it zeros in on the greed and hubris of the people whose decisions sent the world into a major recession -- and cost a lot of people their jobs, livelihood and retirement.
The cast includes Demi Moore, Simon Baker, Penn Badgley, Zachary Quinto, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, Stanley Tucci and Kevin Spacey. 'Margin Call' opens Oct. 21. Here's the official synopsis; check out the trailer after the jump.

Showtime’s latest drama The Borgias premiered on a difficult night, fighting for viewers with AMC’s freshman drama The Killing, HBO’s Mildred Pierce and Starz freshman drama Camelot (ironically helmed by Michael Hirst, creator of The Tudors And The Borgias).
Still, the premium cable network managed to score its best debut for a Sunday drama in seven years. Dead Like Me had premiered in 2003 with 1.11 million viewers.
The 9Pm showing of The Borgias brought in 1.06 million viewers, and the encore showing at 11Pm brought in 432,000 viewers for a total of 1.49 viewers for the night. The Borgias premiere was up 22% from The Tudors freshman season premiere – 869,000 viewers and 1.27 million viewers for the night.
No word yet on how many Assassin’s Creed gaming fans tuned in, looking out for an Ezio Auditore Da Firenze or Desmond Miles Easter Egg. However, we’ll be sure to follow up with Showtime...

Writer/director J.C. Chandor's directorial debut 'Margin Call' takes place at a financial firm in midtown Manhattan, far above the normal people whose money (and lives) the analysts and brokers affect with their every decision. Whether or not this firm is the first domino to fall in what would become the financial meltdown of 2008 is unclear, but the scent of change -- or is it blood? -- is in the air, as the movie opens with a series of ruthless layoffs.
As senior risk analyst Eric Dale (Stanley Tucci) is escorted out of the building, his years at the firm reduced to a box of mementos, he thrusts a thumb drive at junior analyst Peter Sullivan (Zachary Quinto) and urges him to look at the data on there. There's something there, a problem that he's been working on, and it's bad news. He'd tried to warn others,...

Margin Call is J.C. Chandor‘s drama premiered last week at the Sundance Film Festival.
Movie has quite interesting cast that includes Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Irons, Simon Baker and Zachary Quinto.
According to many reviews that’s everything the movie has.
But, that’s enough (maybe!?) for LionsGate and Roadside Attractions to join together in order to acquire the distribution rights for it!
Here’s a little description:

Sundance Film Festival 2011 opened this weekend and a lot of films have already been picked up for distribution later in the year or next year. While many believe that Sundance is the last pure place for movies untouched by the evil studio conglomerates, Sundance has become a market place for studios to shop as well, allowing for these movies to be seen.

The story follows a young American man and a young British woman who fall for each other, until she is deported back to England after overstaying her visa. Today it was announced by Steve Beeks of Lionsgate and Howard Cohen of Roadside Attractions that they have teamed to acquire and release J.C. Chandor's thriller, Margin Call for a 2011 release.
The deal came together after an all night negotiation between Cassian Elwes and Rena Ronson of UTA on behalf of Margin Call producers. The film will have it's world premiere on Tuesday night at the Eccles Theater, and a 2011 theatrical release is planned.
The film boasts an amazing cast that includes Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, Zachary Quinto, Penn Badgley, Simon Baker, Mary McDonnell, Demi Moore, and Stanley Tucci. Chandor wrote and directed the film which was produced by Michael Benaroya and Barnum of Benaroya Pictures. Quinto, Dodson, and Corey Moosa of Before the Door Pictures and Joe Jenckes. Elwes, Laura Rister, Randy Manis, and Joshua Blum serve as executive producers.

It is safe to say that Margin Call was my most anticipated film of this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Having scored a spot on the buzzed-about 2010 Black List [1], Margin Call has an all-star cast featuring Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Irons, Stanley Tucci, and Zachary Quinto. It is also topical, purporting to be based on true events and chronicling the actions of an investment banking firm at the epicenter of the 2008 financial disaster. Sadly, Margin Call is an unfortunate lesson in what happens when you make a movie that, like The Social Network, features dozens of characters talking intensely at each other for 2 hours, only with none of the skill that Sorkin or Fincher brought to their particular film. Hit the jump for some further thoughts, plus an audio blog I recorded with Laremy discussing the film. (He loved it. I hated it.) Margin Call begins with a scene that’s so good,...

First time filmmaker J.C. Chandor brought his directorial debut Margin Call to the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, and GeekTyrant was on hand to check out a press screening before the premiere. The film is a self-contained story set almost exclusively within a high profile firm in New York City just as the 2008 financial crisis is about to hit.
I know next to nothing about stocks and trading (most of what I know came from Oliver Stone's Wall Street) and even less about the cause of America's most recent financial downfall. So the movie was interesting in that it pulled back the curtain (fictionally, of course) on how a scenario like that could have happened.

While I often refer to The Black List as a annual list of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood, that isn't actually the case -- the list is compiled with a poll of 300 development executives and high-level assistants, and contains a ranking of the hot screenplays making the rounds in Hollywoodland, which were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2010 and will not be released in theaters during this calendar year. Basically, the black list contains the hottest projects in Hollywood that you haven't heard of yet. Some of the screenplays have been acquired and some are even in production.
