“Paris, 13th District” is the latest picture from acclaimed director Jacques Audiard, known for such award-winning films as “A Prophet” and “Rust and Bone.” In his latest, Audiard teams up with “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” writer Céline Sciamma and fellow French screenwriter Léa Mysius to tell the story of four young lovers in the electrifying, multicultural 13th arrondissement of Paris. The film opens in select theaters and on demand on April 15.
Adapted from Adrian Tomine’s acclaimed graphic novel, “Paris, 13th District” weaves a breezy tapestry of modern love stories. Lucie Zhang delivers a breakout performance as free-spirited Émilie, who begins a casual relationship with new roommate Camille (Makita Samba). Noémie Merlant (‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire’) plays wide-eyed student Nora, whose new life in Paris is complicated when she is accidentally mistaken for cam girl Amber Sweet (Jehnny Beth).

For the past three years the lovely folks over at Deadline Hollywood have crunched some numbers and given us an overview of how women writers fared during pilot season. Since 2010 there has been a 12 percent jump in the number of pilots written by women that are picked up. Unfortunately, those numbers weren't very high in the first place. The following table summarizes the statistics from the past three years:
201020112012Overall20%35%32%CW50%50%50%NBC19%41%42%ABC36%28%36%CBS21%36%24%Fox--36%19%
It's comforting to see an upward trend across the board but the drastic differences between the networks highlight the bias that still exists today. Also, it's important to note that these numbers are for overall women writers, which includes women writing alone, on a writing team with another women, or a man. When we look at pilots written solely by women, the numbers get even smaller. This begs the question of why there seems to...

The major networks have revealed their 2012-13 primetime television schedules at this year's upfronts, so we now know that only a handful of the 96 pilots that were produced this year will debut as new series in the fall. Even though this is certainly bad news for many hopeful actors, directors, and writers, there is reason to believe that 2012 looks more promising for women in television.Neely Swanson, an adjunct professor at the USC School of Cinematic Arts and former Svp of Development for David E. Kelly Productions, has analyzed each of the half-hour and hour-long comedy and drama pilots that were created for the networks this year, to determine whether female writers are finding more success than in past years. While gender inequality obviously remains, is it at least time for people to stop referring to the writers' room as a "boys' club?"Overall, women were responsible for 32 percent...

Neely Swanson is presently an adjunct professor at the USC School of Cinematic Arts in the writing division, teaching “The Entertainment Industry Seminar”. She was formerly Svp of Development for David E. Kelley Productions. For the 3rd year, this is from her blog about writers: Women Writing Pilots – Nice Work if You Can Get It By the time you read this, the networks already have announced the pilots they are picking up to series from among the ninety or so that were produced this year for ABC, CBS, CW, Fox and NBC. Certainly the relative success that CBS had with its schedule, and the more limited slots Fox has available, influenced their rationale for picking up fewer pilots to production than ABC and NBC. This year, the CW ordered 8 pilots, up from 6 in years past, an increase of 33%. But more to the point, or the point for the last few years,...

2010 was the worst network pilot season for women writers and showrunners. So back then I asked Neely Swanson to analyze why. She is the former Svp of Development for David E. Kelley Productions, and presently an adjunct professor at the USC School of Cinematic Arts in the writing division. Here, exclusive to Deadline. is her new analysis of the 2011 season for women pilot writers: The earth didn’t just move, it was an earthquake for women pilot writers in 2011. Television audiences judge with their remote controls and it’s doubtful whether anyone has ever watched a TV show because it was written by a man or a woman. But this year, for some unexplained reason, women were hilarious, just as last year, for some reason, they weren’t. The 2010-2011 pilot season was arguably the worst in the last 10 years for women writers. There was no credible explanation for the truly horrible numbers that emerged.

Updates Worst Network Pilot Season For Women? My recent post asking whether this was the worst network pilot season for women writers and showrunners provoked a lot of controversy. I asked Neely Swanson to expand for Deadline/Hollywood on her recent essay about it. She is the former Svp of Development for David E. Kelley Productions, and presently is an adjunct professor at the USC School of Cinematic Arts in the writing division. She teaches “The Entertainment Industry Seminar.” Neely also writes a blog about big and small sceen writers at www.nomeanerplace.com. I received several emails this past week pointing out the scarcity of women writers on the recent [...]...
