Five years since his previous Oscar-winning drama Ida, Paweł Pawlikowski now makes a stunning return with his latest romantic drama Cold War. The film initially premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. Opening to high praise, it found itself at the top of many “best of Cannes” lists (including our own). Even more remarkable is Pawlikowski’s direction on the film, which garnished him the Best Director award at the festival. Courtesy of Film4, we now have the U.K. trailer for Cold War.
Set in the 1950s in Poland, Berlin, Yugoslavia, and Paris, Cold War centers on Zula (played by Joanna Kulig) and Wiktor (played by Tomasz Kot), a young couple who find themselves to be “fatefully mismatched” with one another. Over the course of nearly two decades, the film explores the intricacies of their relationship – all while the political pressures of the Cold War are felt within the background.

Directed by Paweł PawlikowskiThe Polish filmmaker Pawel Pawlikowski won best director, for ‘Cold War’, which follows two lovers from the end of World War II into the 1960s across countries and shifting political realities. Based on his own parents’ love story, this gorgeously shot, Robert Doisneau-esque (when in Paris) black and white period piece takes a slice of your heart away in its retelling.

Well, there were great expectations for Pawel Pawlikowski’s follow-up after the beautiful and pluri-award-winning Ida (2013). To say he has satisfied them is an understatement. Cold War is a masterclass in filmmaking and is a reminder of what made many of us fall in love with cinema in the first place.
The story is about two musicians: Wiktor, who is a composer, pianist and debonair man about town (Tomasz Zot) and Zula (Joanna Kulig), who is a beautiful young singer with a complicated past. But not as complicated as their country’s recent past or present, for the action begins in Poland in 1949. Wiktor and his team, comprised of Irena (Agata Kulesza) and Kaczmarek (Borys Szyc), are touring the countryside looking for traditional folk songs to record. After glimpses of rural life that look more like something from Bruegel than the twentieth century, the team head to a country mansion...
There can be no prizes for guessing the historical milieu of Pawel Pawlikowski’s “Cold War,” a transfixing miniature that evokes the eponymous midcentury geopolitical freeze with all the intricate, delicate decay of the Polish auteur’s Oscar-winning “Ida.” But the cold war at the center of this restless, ellipsis-filled film is one between hearts, not territories: Skipping with swift agility across European borders and a 15-year timeframe, Pawlikowski sketches an intense long-term love affair between two mismatched Polish musicians whose relationship is defined less by affection than a mutual, mistrustful, latently violent hostility. Loosely inspired by the tempestuous marriage of the director’s late parents — for whom the principals are named, and to whom the film is mournfully dedicated — “Cold War” may return to “Ida’s” meticulous monochrome aesthetic of “Ida,” but it’s a companion piece with its own tonal and structural energy: less emotionally immediate, perhaps, but...

Exclusive: Japan’s Nippon Television (Ntv) has added Japanese historical drama Persona Non Grata, which was filmed entirely in Poland, to its Cannes slate.
Directed by Cellin Gluck, the film tells the true story of Chiune Sugihara, a Japanese diplomat working in Lithuania during the Second World War, who rescued more than 10,000 Jewish people by issuing them with transit visas through Japan to Curacao.
Gluck previously directed the Japanese version of Sideways. Persona Non Grata is produced by Tokyo-based Cine Bazar and had Poland’s Akson Studio on board as line producer. During the shoot, Polish cities doubled for Berlin, Moscow, Tokyo, New York, Bucharest and Lithuania.
Toshiaki Karasawa plays Sugihara and the cast also includes Koyuki (The Last Samurai), Agnieszka Grochowska (Walesa: Man Of Hope) and Borys Szyc (Snow White And Russian Red).
Ntv is holding an invitation-only work-in-progress screening of the film in Cannes. Japanese release is scheduled for December 2015.

Warning: Trailer contains cartoon nudity!!! Jeż Jerzy, or George the Hedgehog, which I'll refer to from now on is a comic book from Polish creators Rafał Skarżycki and Tomasz Leśniak. In 2011 a animated movie was made that featured the titular character George the Hedgehog. George the Hedgehog tells a story where two neo-Nazis and a mad scientist create a clone of the character (George) in an attempt to defeat him. Sounds funky, eh? According to wikipedia, "The film's plot is a compilation of various stories from all of the Jeż Jerzy's comic albums except the newest (Jeż Jerzy: Musi umrzeć), which was published after the script was written." Sounds like an interesting comic book and judging by the trailer for the movie this is definitely rated R Cast Borys Szyc as George the Hedgehog Maria Peszek as Yola Sokół as Stefan Michał Koterski as Zenek Wojtek Wawszczyk as the clone...

The film program at South By Southwest (SXSW) has really come into its own over the past few years -- SXSW is becoming an impressive little film fest in addition to being a massive music party. The lineups for Midnight features and shorts have been announced, and there are some good premieres in there. Attack the Block, from Joe Cornish, will have a world premiere, while Hobo With a Shotgun and James Wan's Insidious will show up as well. And the films that most of us haven't heard of sound pretty great, too. If I was at the fest I'd have my ass planted in a seat for every one of these at midnight. Screw the parties -- the crazy genre films are the way to go. The fill list of features is after the break. The shorts program is massive, and you can find it at the SXSW website [1].
