Wicked Little Letters is one of those truth-stranger-than-fiction tales that remind us that people are weirder than we might think. Director Thea Sharrock opens her comedy/mystery tale with text informing us “more of this is true than you might think,” a comic mystery about on the sudden appearance of anonymous obscene letters sent to various residents of a quiet of early 1920s little British seaside town. The first victim is Edith Swan (Olivia Colman), prim and proper religious spinster who still lives with her parents, and who embodies the last-gasp of the Victorian era ideal of a quiet obedient woman against those uppity women demanding the vote. Suspicion quickly falls on Edith’s neighbor, a foul-mouthed new arrival from Ireland, Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley), who has a daughter Nancy (Alisha Weir), and...

All of Us Strangers, The Color Purple, Fellow Travelers, The Last of Us, and Our Flag Means Death (which was just canceled by Max) received nominations for the 35th Annual GLAAD Media Awards. The annual awards recognize fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues in the media, and this year’s list includes 310 nominees.
“For 35 years, the GLAAD Media Awards has provided the global stage for LGBTQ creators, alongside industry talent and leaders to be celebrated and supported. Back in 2013, Dublin-born actor Andrew Scott decided it was time to come out. He was about to do publicity for the movie “Pride.” “It got to a stage where I felt like it was an omission,” he told me recently at Los Angeles’ London Hotel. “Not speaking about it was bothering me a little. I just made the movie ‘Pride.’ And I didn’t really want to talk about that film without saying who I am. I had no shame about it anymore. So it was a brilliant thing to do. I would say to any young actor, that it was wonderful for me personally, but it was very good for my work, too. It didn’t affect my work negatively in any shape, or form. In fact, the opposite.”
He has been saying “no” throughout his career. “For me, it’s about a signature,” he said. “If the writing...

Another year, another “strange time” for festivals. And yet, despite a pair of on-going strikes and an entertainment world that seems hellbent on remaining in flux, as the air turns chillier, it’s still time for the laurels to come out, and there are plenty of new films to get excited about seeing soon.
This year’s fall festival season includes new films from Hayao Miyazaki, Michael Mann, David Fincher, Ellen Kurras, Yorgos Lanthimos, Errol Morris, Pablo Larraín, Kitty Green, Andrew Haigh, Harmony Korine, and Anna Kendrick, and that’s only the start. There are films about everything from vampiric dictators to (actual) dicks, dumb money to stupid dreams, true stories of courage to fake stories of Nicolas Cage invading people’s minds, at least one very big suit, and so very much more.
And while a handful of films have opted to skip out on the festivals, like the...

Filmmakers Quentin Tarantino and Edgar Wright are still making movies, but their signature styles already influenced an entire generation of artists. Toss their works into a blender along with Bollywood flair, and you’ll get Nida Manzoor’s feature film debut, Polite Society. This offbeat martial arts comedy doesn’t reach the heights of its inspirations, but its high-spirited nature makes it an infectious adventure.
‘Polite Society’ follows an action hero in training Priya Kansara as Ria Khan | Parisa Taghizadeh / Focus Features
Ria Khan (Priya Kansara) is a London schoolgirl who runs her own martial arts channel on YouTube, but she’s still in training. She has the dream of becoming the world’s greatest stuntwoman, looking up to one of the current best, named Eunice Huthart. Meanwhile, Ria is incredibly close with her older sister, Lena (Ritu Arya), who is an art school dropout now living back at home.

Ria Khan is “the fury,” or so she repeatedly claims, in Polite Society, an absolutely bonkers action-packed comedy from writer/director Nida Manzoor (We Are Lady Parts). Ria’s a schoolgirl with big dreams and no filter in Manzoor’s wild and crazy feature film directorial debut.
Don’t mess with the Khan sisters or Ria (Priya Kansara) will unleash hell. Or at least she’ll try her damnedest. She’s got her mind set on becoming a stuntwoman, even though her kicks miss more often than they connect. Never mind that her incredibly patient Pakistani parents aren’t supportive of her chosen profession or that her teacher tries to squash her dreams by suggesting she’s more suited to become a doctor. The horror! Nothing will keep Ria from her chosen profession.
Fortunately, her...

As 2022 wraps up, the end of the year presents an opportunity to look back on how LGBTQ representation fared on the big screen. According to GLAAD’s 10th Annual Studio Responsibility Index, the percentage of LGBTQ-inclusive films (as well as racial diversity and screen time for queer characters) dipped in 2021.
While this year’s official report has yet to be released, it appears to have recovered some ground. From theaters to streamers, it’s been an impressive year for LGBTQ flicks, from joyful summer rom-coms “Bros” and “Fire Island” to sobering dramas like “My Policeman” and “The Inspection.” That includes some of the most talked-about titles of awards season – “The Whale,” “Tár”, and “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” to name a few.
If you’re looking for your next themed binge of the holiday break, read on for the 11 best LGBTQ movies of 2022.

Nostalgia, racism, mental health, and the love of cinema are just some of the topics touched upon in Oscar-winning filmmaker Sam Mendes’ 2022 drama Empire of Light.
Empire of Light takes place in an old cinema house on the south coast of England in the early 1980s. The film focuses on the relationship between Hilary Small (Olivia Colman), the middle-aged mid-manager of the theater, and the new, young Black ticket taker Stephen (Micheal Ward). It’s made clear early on that Hilary is suffering from depression and takes medication to combat the illness – a medication she tells her psychiatrist makes her feel a bit numb. The doctor assures her she’ll get used to the drug and to give it time.

Independent Entertainment, the finance, sales and production company behind films including “We Need to Talk About Kevin” and the upcoming “My Policeman,” which is set to have its world premiere at TIFF, celebrates its fifteenth anniversary this year.
Since its founding by CEO Luc Roeg in 2007, the film landscape has undergone unimaginable change, from the ascendance of streaming platforms to the global pandemic followed by a cost of living crisis that has brought cinemas to their knees.

Killing Eve will conclude after its fourth season, and we’re already in mourning. Not just for the loss of the “cat and mouse” game between Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh) and Villanelle (Jodie Comer), but also for the loss of Villanelle’s wardrobe. Few fictional characters are dressed as sharply—or luxuriously—as the psychopathic assassin. Whether she’s wearing designer suit sets, flowy dresses or hospital scrubs, Villanelle knows how to make an outfit work…and her closet is simply to die for. Here is our countdown of her 10 most iconic looks. 10. The “On the Other Side” Outfit Parisa Taghizadeh/BBCAmerica Villanelle has a vast array of power suits, but this blazer by Chloe, which she paired with metallic pants and a purple-pink blouse, was both sleek and unique. If we’re honest, it was also a little bit funny—only V could not only un-ironically don a horse print,...

Anya Taylor-Joy stars as Sandie and Thomasin McKenzie as Eloise in Edgar Wright’s Last Night In Soho, a Focus Features release. Credit: Parisa Taghizadeh / © 2021 Focus Features, LLC
Great set designs and cinematography. Moments of innovative direction by Edgar Wright. Superb performances from the two leading actresses – Thomasin McKenzie and Anya Taylor-Joy. All of that frittered away because Wright’s screenplay begins with an intriguing premise before wandering everywhere but into the realm of coherence.
McKenzie plays a country lass who realizes her dream of acceptance into London’s best fashion school, where she plans to develop her designs based on the swinging 1960s, which was when her late mother thrived for a while before losing her marbles. She’s immediately dissed by the school’s “Mean Girls”, causing her to leave the dorm and find a room in an old woman’s even older, run-down house. She begins having...

Although it begins as an apparently straight-forward fish-out-of-water tale of a young fashion designer from rural Scotland attending university in London, director Edgar Wright’s occasionally dazzling Last Night in Soho doesn’t quite succeed in sustaining its edge-of-insanity mystery thriller pace throughout its running time, despite producing some memorable moments and performances along the way.
The aspiring designer, named Eloise (Thomasin McKenzie), is initially taken aback by the perils posited by her new city life as she doesn’t seem to fit in with her new roommate nor with any of her fellow students. So, she sets about finding a new place to live where she can better focus on her studies. To that end she comes across an ad posted by a Miss Collins (the late Diana Rigg) who has a room to rent. Upon moving in, Eloise begins to have visions of a singer named Sandy (Anya Taylor-Joy...

When the cat-and-mouse spy thriller “Killing Eve” first debuted on BBC America last year, it became the year’s first true word-of-mouth hit, thanks to razor-sharp writing from “Fleabag” creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge and riveting lead performances from Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer.
Oh has earned widespread acclaim for her work as MI5 agent Eve Polastri, bagging an Emmy nomination last fall and a slew of other trophies in the months since. But a cat is nothing without her mouse, and Comer’s Villanelle is one heck of a mouse. In playing the psychopathic assassin being hunted by Eve and enjoying the chase, Comer at turns rises to match Oh’s trademark intensity and manages to undercut it entirely with a single facial expression or a killer Waller-Bridge one-liner.
Season 2, premiering Sunday with a new head writer, “Call the Midwife” star and longtime friend of Waller-Bridge, Emerald Fennell, will introduce an...
