The history of television is fascinating because you can trace lines between almost any modern show and one of the classics, as crews move from one show to another, bringing their past work and their influences with them. This applies to both live-action and animation. In the latter, many animators who start as writers or storyboard artists in one show end up creating their own series years later, bringing colleagues along with them, who then go on to create their own shows in return. Take "Dexter's Laboratory" launching the career of not just Genndy Tartakovsky, but also Craig McCracken, Rob Renzetti, Butch Hartman, and Seth MacFarlane, each going on to make a popular show.
What "Dexter's Laboratory" did in the '90s, "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack" did in the late 2000s. This is a show that helped launch several animation careers, with plenty of writers and storyboard artists...

Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli hired an American, Steve Alpert, as the head of its international division in 1996. His main duties involved the translation of Ghibli’s projects for the English-speaking audience. In his memoir, Sharing a House with the Never-Ending Man, Alpert detailed his experience working with Miyazaki. He also told the story about how Harvey Weinstein’s Miramax posed a problem for his first Ghibli project, Princess Mononoke.
Princess Mononoke was one of the first films from Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli to establish an influence outside Japan
However, Alpert did not have to single-handedly deal with Miramax to save Miyazaki’s film as he had help from screenwriter Neil Gaiman. Gaiman was hired by the studio to write the English-language screenplay of the film.

Genndy Tartakovsky’s Star Wars: Clone Wars was the first time that George Lucas trusted someone with his precious IP for another on-screen project. It was also one of those rare instances at the time when a live-action project received an animated spinoff. Tartakovsky’s little Cartoon Network project worked out pretty well for Lucas & Co. who suffered a setback from the mixed receptions for their prequel trilogy.

The Clone Wars was mentioned once in the first Star Wars film and took place between the events of the prequel trilogy films, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. Interestingly, Tartakovsky released the animated series in between these two films.

Genndy Tartakovsky doesn’t need to be told twice when it comes to animation. The medium of art is his second language and passion and the limits of all his artistic views and bottomless ambitions are contained within the constantly evolving stream. After delivering the definitive Batman with Batman: The Animated Series, Bruce Timm joined forces with Alan Burnett to give the other member of the World’s Finest a similar treatment. In this new clip from the upcoming Disney+ series Star Wars: Tales of the Empire, the Nightsisters face General Grievous and his droid army.
The battle pits the former Kaleesh warlord against the power of the Nightsisters. Will Dathomir Magic be enough to withstand Grievous’s ferociousness? We’ll find out starting on May 4th!
Admittedly, Grievous looks fantastic. The hulking cyborg Jedi-slayer is meacing, for the most part. There’s just something odd about General this time around.
Star Wars: Tales of the Empire does worry me a little. Ok, it’s Disney Star Wars, so it worries me a lot.
I’m glad the series will focus on characters who need some closure from Filioni’s earlier works, but what’s the deal with General Grievous in this clip? I know that in Dave Filoni’s Clone Wars, he’s way more talkative and cartoonish, but his appearance is off.

Genndy Tartakovsky's 2001 animated series "Samurai Jack" is probably one of the best of its era. The series boasted a peculiar and stoic tone, with the title hero (Phil Lamarr) staying quiet for vast blocks of the show. Samurai Jack was lost in the distant future, thanks to the sorcery of a tricky trickster god named Aku, and a lot of the series was devoted to Jack's exploration of strange, new alien settings. "Samurai Jack." also featured a unique, neo-cubist aesthetic; characters didn't have black-line outlines, and backgrounds were often abstract and blocky. Fans will also hasten to add the overwhelmingly awesome action of "Samurai Jack." If one is animating with blocky shapes and abstract backgrounds, the action can be just as stylized. The fight scenes on "Samurai Jack" are the stuff of legend.
"Samurai Jack" ran until 2004, and there had long been plans to adapt the series into a live-action feature film.

Van Partible's animated series "Johnny Bravo" debuted on the Cartoon Network on July 14, 1997. It was one of four new shows that Cartoon Network premiered in 1997 and 1998 that served as a declaration for a new creator-forward direction the network was taking. "Johnny Bravo" debuted alongside Genndy Tartakovsky's "Dexter's Laboratory," David Feiss' "Cow and Chicken," and Craig McCracken's "The Powerpuff Girls." In 1999, that lineup would be complemented by "Ed, Edd n Eddy," and "Courage the Cowardly Dog." These shows were all quirky and idiosyncratic and attracted a generation of fans.
"Johnny Bravo" was about a barrel-chested, Elvis-voiced lug who lived with his mother and attempted to find love in the big city. His buffoonery and vanity, however, usually kept him single. Johnny was played by prolific voice actor Jeff Bennett, who has been acting professionally since 1991. Van Partible had been working on a version of the show as early...

Genndy Tartakovsky's "Clone Wars" is one of the best things to ever happen to "Star Wars." The micro-series gave us a vision of the Jedi as they saw themselves; as people thought the Jedi were; the version of the Jedi a young Anakin had in mind when he first met Qui-Gon Jinn — superhuman, invincible, god-like. Even 20 years later, there's nothing quite like it.
One of the best things the show did was bring the character of Durge over from the comics to the animated series. Durge is an alien bounty hunter with regenerative powers who fights Obi-Wan in one of the best episodes of "Clone Wars," an episode full of body horror and even a sequence inspired by anime masterpiece "Akira."
It's a shame that neither the character nor the show are considered canon by Lucasfilm and Disney.

Prior to the debut of "The Powerpuff Girls" in 1998, show creator Craig McCracken had directed a series of tasteless cartoon shorts starring a character named No-Neck Joe. No-Neck Joe appeared regularly at the celebrated annual Spike & Mike Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation, cementing McCracken's underground credentials. The Powerpuff Girls first came into McCracken's repertoire as early as 1992, back when they were called the Whoopass Girls. The juxtaposition between the characters' creepy, ultra-cute, Margaret Keane-like faces and their ultra-violent behavior was the stuff of comedy legend, and McCracken kept the Girls in his back pocket for years.
Throughout the 1990s, McCracken rose in the ranks of the animation world, landing gigs on shows like "2 Stupid Dogs," "Dumb and Dumber," and, most notably, Genndy Tartakovsky's seminal series 1996 "Dexter's Laboratory." Uncle Iroh has undoubtedly been a fan-favorite and one of the most likable characters from the 2005 show Avatar: The Last Airbender. Played by the Japanese voiceover artist Mako Iwamatsu for two seasons, the actor injected the character of Iroh with wisdom and warmth. Unfortunately, by 2006, the role went over to American actor Greg Baldwin.

In George Lucas' 1977 sci-fi flick "Star Wars," there is a scene wherein a cadre of Nazi-like bad guys, in the employ of the evil Empire, gather around a boardroom table and mention that the mysterious off-screen Emperor has dissolved the senate and taken absolute control. The military generals are outraged, wondering how the Empire might survive without a bureaucracy in place. In Irvin Kirshner's 1980 sequel "The Empire Strikes Back," it's established that Darth Vader (David Prowse), a mysterious masked warlock, was actually the Emperor's right-hand man, indicating that the Emperor retains control of the Empire through the sheer force of his villainy.
In "The Empire Strikes Back," the Emperor appeared in holographic form to have a powwow with Darth Vader and plan his next move. In the original cut of the movie, the Emperor was played on screen by actress Marjorie Eaton, outfitted with eerie, alien eyeballs. Eaton was a long-working character performer in Hollywood,...

The 2008 cartoon series "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" is now a heralded piece of the "Star Wars" legacy, filling in plenty of gaps in the "Star Wars" prequel film trilogy. It also finally told the story of the eponymous conflict — which was first namedropped all the way back in the original 1977 "Star Wars." "The Clone Wars" was a story that had been speculated on for more than 40 years. What if I told you, though, that the story had already been recounted by 2008?
In between the theatrical releases of "Attack of the Clones" (in 2002) and "Revenge of the Sith" (in 2005), Lucasfilm launched "The Clone Wars Multimedia Project." This was a collection of tie-in media telling the story between the films of a galaxy at war.

Dave Filoni does not like to throw away his toys.
Since joining "Star Wars" as a director on the 2008 "The Clone Wars" cartoon series, he's become the protégé of creator George Lucas and chief creative officer of Lucasfilm. Characters introduced (Ahsoka Tano) and reintroduced (Darth Maul) in "The Clone Wars" and follow-up shows like "Star Wars Rebels" and "The Mandalorian" continue to return time and time again, be it in animation or live-action.
The new trailer for the final season of "The Bad Batch" reveals another face is returning; Asajj Ventress. The trailer holds her appearance for an ending surprise, with Nika Futterman's raspy voice slithering in as narration before Ventress charges out with a yellow lightsaber.
There's just one problem — Ventress is supposed to be dead. In the 2015 novel "Star Wars: Dark Disciple" (authored by Christie Golden and based on scripts written for "The Clone Wars" before it...

What?! That’s where all of us Star Wars fans are at after watching the trailer for The Bad Batch season 3, which reveals that Asajj Ventress is Alive. What the heck is happening in the galaxy far, far away?
Remember: the fan-favorite The Clone Wars Nightsister villain was a staple of that TV series…until she was killed offscreen during the show’s long hiatus, in the pages of the novel Dark Disciple by Christie Golden. In that 2015 novel, Asajj, operating as more of an anti-hero than a straight up dark sider, sacrificed herself to save the man she loved, the rogue Jedi Quinlan Vos, from Count Dooku. At the end of the book, Asajj is returned to the waters of Dathomir, where the Nightsisters lay the dead to rest.
Here’s the problem: this all happened during the Clone Wars era, some time before the events of Revenge of the Sith.

"Star Wars," much like the superhero genre, thrives in animation. It is in this medium that the potential for storytelling of the galaxy far, far away truly becomes apparent. Whether it is the larger-than-life feats of power of Genndy Tartakovsky's "Clone Wars" micro-series, the expansive worldbuilding and cinematic visuals of "The Clone Wars," or the explosion of varied visuals and stories bringing different cultures to the franchise in "Star Wars: Visions," animation can bring out the best in "Star Wars."
After helping create "The Clone Wars," "Rebels," and "Tales of the Jedi," Dave Filoni helped give us the first "Star Wars" series centered squarely on the faceless guys that fought alongside the Jedi (and eventually betrayed them) with the war thriller "The Bad Batch." Meese was surprised by his 5-year old twin daughters with the news during a staff meeting.
It comes almost six years after he joined WME from APA, where he spent nearly ten years.
He told Deadline that he expects there to be a comedy “boom” in the coming years. “People are realizing comedy is evergreen and people want to laugh, especially in times of trying and I think it’s all cyclical. It’s going to be coming back and have a big boom over the next couple of years,” he said.
He predicted buyers will lean more towards comedy, which is inherently cheaper to produce than drama as they get “more bang for their buck”.

At the last Creative Arts Emmys back in Sept. 2022, “Succession” was tied for the most nominations (13) but took home just one trophy (Drama Casting). This year looks to be different, as according to our current combined odds in 31 categories, the fourth and final season of the smash HBO series will nab at least three victories. Other shows that will score multiple trophies include the enduring game show “Jeopardy!,” the first season of “The Bear” and the TV movie “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.”
These official odds for the Creative Arts Emmys are derived from the predictions of our Experts who write about television year-round, our in-house team of Editors, the Top 24 Users who did the best predicting last year’s ceremony, the All-Star Top 24 who have the highest scores when you combine predictions from the last two years and all our Users who make up the largest and often savviest bloc of predictors.

Genndy Tartakovsky makes everything he works on better, but even he wasn't able to fix the hot mess that was "Iron Man 2." In Joanna Robinson, Dave Gonzales, and Gavin Edwards' book "MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios," the acclaimed filmmaker behind beloved titles like "Samurai Jack," "Dexter's Laboratory," and "Star Wars: Clone Wars" reveals that he was tapped by director Jon Favreau to help streamline the Marvel sequel's climax.
"Jon was a fan, and he liked the sensibility that I had on 'Samurai,'" Tartakovsky said in an interview for "MCU." "I know what I would want from this situation, so I just tried to give it to him — and he could use all of it or none of it." The scene in question takes place in a park in Queens, where a Japanese tea garden was digitally created. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Rhodey (Don Cheadle...

Exclusive: Sony Pictures Animation is in development on a new fantasy-adventure feature from Matt Braly, the creator of Disney’s multiple Emmy-nominated animated series, Amphibia.
Braly comes to the as-yet-untitled project after working for the studio as a storyboard artist on The Mitchells vs the Machines, the Academy Award-nominated feature produced by Lord Miller, which was released on Netflix in 2021.
Drawing on his own cultural background and personal history, the film tells the story of a young boy who goes on an emotional journey to a fantastical world of Thai spirits where he hopes to have his illness cured. We’re well into the so-called post-Peak TV era. Tightening budgets and consolidating streaming platforms suggest an uncertain future for the medium. With the exception of new staples like The Last of Us and Poker Face, many of the best television shows of 2023 wrapped things up with their final seasons or had only limited runs. And due to the Hollywood strikes, the TV landscape could look quite different by this time next year.
Yet, Succession and Barry have proven that there remains room for complex narratives skewering American lust for power and unaccountability, while comedies like The Great, I Think You Should Leave, and I’m a Virgo bent the boundaries of the form with gonzo vigor. And new animated shows like Genndy Tartakovsky’s Unicorn: Warriors Eternal and Max’s Scavengers Reign bring a sense of fantastical wonder that’s generally lacking in more terrestrial series. It's a little humbling to realize that Adam Sandler is in his mid-fifties, just a few years away from the milestone birthday of 60 years old. Sandler is all but enshrined as a comedy icon, having recently received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor and being known to one generation as a mischievous part of "Saturday Night Live" and to another for his roles in animated films like "Hotel Transylvania." Mortality and legacy are -- at least somewhat -- a part of Sandler's latest project, an animated film from Netflix (where he's primarily worked for the last few years). The film is "Leo," which coasts on irresistible charm even when the plot is a bit light. Though "Leo" is perhaps not the most groundbreaking animated film of the year, its gentle tone and emotion mixed with some standard anarchic gags from the Happy Madison school of comedy work in its favor.

The "Star Wars" galaxy is vast, to put it lightly. The franchise has been one of the biggest staples of pop culture for nearly 50 years now, dating back to George Lucas' original sci-fi classic in 1977. These days, it's a sprawling, multimedia empire that is an entire universe unto itself. That universe contains its own technology, species, planets, vehicles, and so much more. All of that comes with very specific language that has a fair amount of nuance worth understanding.
Is Endor a planet or a moon? Should you capitalize stormtrooper? What exactly is the Expanded Universe? We're going to go over all of that and so much in more in this handy dandy "Star Wars" style guide. From the proper spellings of common aliens to understanding the entire timeline, we're going to break it all down so you can better navigate a galaxy far, far away.

The world of "Star Wars" animation has always been kind of separate from the live-action one; from Genndy Tartakovsky's "Star Wars: Clone Wars" offering a more mythology-focused take on the Jedi, making them demi-gods of Ancient Greek myth rather than monk warriors, to Dave Filoni's work on "The Clone Wars" convincing George Lucas to be hands-on with "Star Wars" animation and (along with "Star Wars Rebels") introducing a lot of lore in the form of fantastical concepts like the Ghosts of Mortis and the mystical World Between Worlds.
But that has changed in recent years, with filmmakers such as Rian Johnson and Jon Favreau referencing or outright bringing animated characters and elements over into their live-action "Star Wars" projects. Indeed, the most important "Star Wars" titles to be at least aware of right now are all animated, in no small part due to the importance of the character...

Following the announcement of the 2023 Emmy nominations, former Best Animated Program odds leader “The Simpsons” swiftly dropped to second place behind “Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal,” which a significant majority of users now predict will be lauded for its second season after winning for its first in 2021. As it fends off “The Simpsons,” which remains strong in its fight for its 12th victory, it also faces two more past winners and a new show from Netflix, which produced last year’s victor.
Since reigning champ “Arcane” has yet to return for a second season, Netflix’s hopes of conquering this category again lie with “Entergalactic,” the first stand-alone special to compete for this award since 2017. Rounding out the lineup are “Bob’s Burgers” and “Rick and Morty,” each of which has already taken the prize twice.
In order to make sense of this tight race, let’s take a closer look at each nominee.

Entergalactic, the animated special from Kid Cudi that served as an accompaniment to his album, is battling for an Emmy.
The one-off program has scored an Emmy nomination Outstanding Animated Program, where it will compete against Bob’s Burgers, Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal, Rick And Morty and The Simpsons.
It comes after Netflix pulled off a surprise win last year for Arcane, based on the video game, which became the first streaming series to win in the category.
Entergalactic was created by Kid Cudi, who voices Jabari, a charming, streetwear clad artist on the cusp of success. After a chance run-in with his cool new photographer neighbor, Meadow, voiced by Jessica Williams, Jabari has to figure out whether he can make space for love in his life.
It also features the voices of Timothée Chalamet, Vanessa Hudgens, Jaden Smith and Macauley Culkin. The series is produced by Mad Solar, Khalabo Ink Society and Edelgang.
