With all due respect to the vampire western Near Dark and the coolness of The Lost Boys, my favorite ’80s vampire flick is pretty easily Fright Night (watch it Here). It has a way about it that is just unmatched. It’s able to mix the ’80s setting, think Jerry in the club hypnotizing Amy, with both a modern and classic feel. Its almost the evolutionary step of what Hammer films would have turned into had they not folded. Its certainly beloved enough with it’s own documentary and a sequel, remake, and sequel to that remake. That’s what I wanted to talk about today. While Near Dark got no sequel, probably for the best, and The Lost Boys got multiple awful sequels,...

Screaming, flying ‘Autonomous Mobile Swords’ have decimated the enemy in a war on a far-off planet, but now the pesky smart weapons are self-evolving into ever more cruel and deadly new iterations. Peter Weller and Jennifer Rubin head a cast of desperate soldiers in this adaptation of an early story by Philip K. Dick — that perhaps addresses an aspect of the arms race? The show remains a cult favorite of fans of violent sci-fi adventures. Disc extras interview the filmmakers on Screamers’ decade-long path to the screen.

Frankenstein’s Army
Written by Richard Raaphorst, Chris W. Mitchell, and Miguel Tejada-Flores
Directed by Richard Raaphorst
Netherlands/USA/Czech Republic, 2013
Frankenstein’s Army is the closest thing thus far to a live-action Bioshock adaptation. The second Frightfest feature to resemble a video game – albeit in a positive light – the film forgoes the tiresome trademarks of the found-footage format, its curious lens rendering the entire escapade a thrilling a first-person adventure. We begin among a troupe of Russian soldiers during World War II as they delve deeper from the outskirts of the forest and into a laboratory of mechanical nasties, eventually confronting the mad scientist responsible for their creation. All the while, the camera never skirts from its responsibility as a steadfast explorer.
Dr. Victor Frankenstein’s creativity – and by extension, that of director Richard Raaphorst – is truly something to behold. There’s a huge range of beasts in all shapes and sizes,...

Review by Scott Clark of Cinehouse
Over the past few years there’s been a real peak in the impact of fan-boy fantasy on cinema, especially horror. We’ve seen some truly nutty visions being realised on the big screen and, for better or worse, that trend shows no signs of stopping. The recent sub-genre of Nazi zombie films is creatively tackled in first time feature director Richard Raaphorst’s endearingly titled, handheld camera shot, B-movie extraordinaire Frankenstein’s Army.
How, may you ask, is a film set during WW2 shot on hand-held camera? By the genius of a specially selected film student chosen to tag along with a Russian platoon to film some propaganda. This surmises the bonkers...

Here’s something to get you up and marching on a Monday.
In theaters and On Demand July 26th, check out the new trailer for Frankenstein’S Army. Totally safe to watch at work, Comrades.
The Crypt Monster, Hammerhead and Machete Zombot… I love the Zombots! They have a very Real (and menacing) feel to them.
I have to agree with Mark Adams over at Screen International when he wrote in his review, “Where Frankenstein’S Army really shines is with the stunning designs and monster make-up, with the film delivering old-style lumbering monsters without resorting to CGI.”

.War is Hell. This place is worse.. I often find myself writing about bad trailers and apologizing for them because I enjoy the subject matter, or speaking condescendingly to decent trailers for films I have no interest in. And then we have the completely bonkers films that seem to asexually develop in cauldrons over in left field before bubbling out over into the sub-mainstream. These are the films that I wait an entire year for. The most recent example of this cinematic subsection is Dutch director Richard Raaphorst.s gore-tastic horror film Frankenstein.s Army, and it starts witb the screenplay, which was conceived by Raaphorst and screenwriter Miguel Tejada-Flores, who wrote for the films Screamers, Revenge of the Nerds, and Beyond Re-Animator, where Raaphorst was a conceptual artist. (Tejada-Flores later finalized the script with Chris W. Mitchell.) There is no real track record to follow for anyone involved, but...

Frankenstein’s Army
Netherlands, 2013
Written by Chris W. Mitchell and Miguel Tejada-Flores
Directed by Richard Raaphorst
I don’t like to insert myself into these reviews, but at this point it’s important that you know something about me: I have a strong stomach, movie-wise. I didn’t even flinch the first time I saw the birthing scene in Alien. I chuckled my way through the original Evil Dead films and laughed at the cannibalistic climax of Ridley Scott’s Hannibal. I say this not to brag, but to lend some weight to the following statement: Richard Raaphorst’s film Frankenstein’s Army is by far the most disgusting film I’ve ever seen.
This is a found-footage horror film, where a filmmaker has been embedded with a Russian Army unit near the end of World War II (Was hand-held camera technology actually this advanced in 1945? Better not to ask...

I'm not sure if it is good or bad that mainstream film festivals segregate horror films to special "Midnight" sections. On the one hand, these special sections are rarely in competition, but on the other hand, it gets them in front of an audience that may not otherwise be exposed to it.
But I digress. The Tribeca Film Festival announced today its Midnight Movies selections, marking a rebranding of the film block from Cinemania. Check out the lineup below:
Dark Touch, directed and written by Marina de Van. (France) – World Premiere, Narrative. Niamh is the lone survivor of a bloody massacre after the furniture and objects in her family’s isolated house take on a monstrous life of their own. The police ignore her wild stories and the family friends and social worker who take her in try to introduce a new life. But in this psychological thriller, Niamh is...

Raise your hand if you remember the movie Screamers. Ok, keep your hand raised if you remember anything other than "Peter Weller," "Philip K. Dick," and "box office failure." Yeah, that's what I thought. It's not that Screamers is that rotten of a sci-fi horror movie ... more that it's just Ok. Not awful, but certainly not cool enough to warrant a full-bore cult following. But that hasn't stopped a bunch of Canadian filmmakers from unleashing Screamers: The Hunting.
I'll embed the trailer clip in just a sec, but since Quiet Earth did the leg-work on this item, we'll refer you to their site for more info. Screamers: The Hunting looks pretty plain across the board, but of course I'm always interested in seeing a video sequel to a 14-year-old sci-fi flick that nobody talks about anymore. (I'm weird that way. Someone kick me if they ever find a trailer for...
