- Author of hysterically funny "A Confederacy of Dunces", which was published posthumously in 1980, and was awarded the Pulitzer prize the following year.

- After A Confederation of Dunces became an overnight success, plans were made to make it into a movie. At one point the two lead roles would be played by John Candy and Eddie Murphy. It proved exceedingly difficult to turn the long story into a workable script and the project was shelved.
