Key Art for Mixtape, streaming on Paramount+, 2023. Paramount+ announced that Mixtape, a new documentary exploring how the creation of mixtapes launched hip hop into mainstream culture, will premiere exclusively on the service Tuesday, August 1 in the U.S. and Canada and Wednesday, August 2 in the U.K., Australia, Latin America and Brazil, with further international markets to follow later in the year. Mixtape is the story of hip hop refusing to take no for an answer. Before radio play, the internet, and social media, there were mixtapes. DJs were tastemakers, trendsetters and creators of the sound that became the biggest musical genre on the planet. The importance of mixtapes goes well beyond the tapes themselves. Mixtapes were a form of currency and a signifier that someone was “in the know” and had their ear to the streets. The culture was too strong to be stopped, and the artists were too...

Shady's back, tell a friend.
Eminem released his first new song in years today, debuting "Survival" as a part of a video game commercial. The new ad for "Call of Duty: Ghosts" is set to a clip of Slim Shady's latest. After an intro of female vocals, Marshall Mathers raps, "Wasn't ready to be a millionaire / I was ill-prepared / I was prepared to be ill be though / the skill was there." Take a listen to "Survival," albeit with some added weapons sound effects, above.
"Survival" is likely the first track off of Eminem's upcoming eighth studio album. Em, who released his last album, "Recovery," in 2010, recently returned to the rap game, recording a track called "Symphony in H" for DJ Tony Touch's latest mixtape, and performing to a packed crowd earlier this month as part of an event for G-Shock.

Eminem is rapping some interesting allegations, claiming he ‘nailed J. Lo’ in a new song! The real Slim Shady with Jenny from the Block? Say it isn’t so!
Eminem, who is set to release his eighth studio album later this year, is featured in fellow rapper Tony Touch‘s new song ”Symphony in H,” and his raps reveal more than we ever wanted to know about his sexual history — like, did Eminem really “nail” Jennifer Lopez?
Eminem Raps He ‘Nailed’ Jennifer
The rap superstar has some interesting rhymes on the Tony Touch track. He even claims that he uses his Oscar (that he won for his song in 8 Mile) as a “door stop.” That’s no way to treat an Oscar, Eminem!
Don’t ask me wassup with the hoes, I’m still working the kinks out/ Love stinks, that explains all this anger that’s spilling out, and...

Eminem's return to the rap game is official.
The 40-year-old rapper teased "Symphony in H" this week with a 1:30 minute clip. The track is Em at his finest -- quick and harsh, over a catchy beat. "Love stinks, that explains all this anger that's spilling out, and I ain't chilling out / Got an Oscar, but I'm still a grouch," Eminem raps in "Symphony in H." Take a listen to the teaser above.
The song reportedly first leaked on DJ Tony Touch's Sirius radio show. "Symphony in H" will make its full debut on Touch's upcoming mixtape, "The Piece Maker 3: Return Of The 50 Mc's," hitting stores July 9.
Marshall Mathers, who is expected to release his own album later this year, took to Twitter to publicize the track.

We received news this morning that the legendary Guru has joined the trailblazers who inspired him. Although we are not currently representing him, 4Sight Media was selected as the publicity firm to handle the publicity for his last three projects in the Jazzmatazz series.
While 7Grand and Solar are handling their publicity internally with several messages that have been released (including Guru's last statement), we wanted to offer our own deepest sympathy to the fans of Guru who support the Jazzmatazz legacy around the world. We honor Guru for leaving us with music that reaches into higher places, for coloring outside the lines of hip-hop and recognizing the musical masters who inspired him. Through Guru's eyes, there was no division between hip-hop and jazz, hip-hop and neo-soul or hip-hop and history.

News about a hip-hop album being pushed back multiple times or even scrapped entirely in favor of fresh tracks is not exactly a shocking development these days. But when the artist is Eminem and the release is the highly anticipated sequel to his comeback album, 2009's Relapse, every scrap of information is treated like a Dr. Dre-blessed gold nugget.
So it was confusing on Wednesday when Slim Shady shocked fans by telling them that there would be no Relapse 2. Just like that, after a year of hype, Em had given up on part two, which was reportedly going to be more emotional and lyrical than the first installment.

Fire Starter: Jay Electronica
"All my dreams are coming true all across the board for some reason," Jay Electronica said via phone from London. Jay — who's on the other side of the pond headlining shows — just celebrated his daughter Mars' first birthday (mom is Erykah Badu) and his hometown team the New Orleans Saints just won the Super Bowl. Plus his career is on the upswing; life is good.
Jay's Just Blaze-produced "Exhibit C" is one of those special hip-hop records that you hear and instantly love. An independent release, it's garnering heavy rotation on major radio stations like New York's Hot 97, and in the streets and on the Internet the record has the buzz of a #1 single. Several MCs from Capone-n-Noreaga to Cassidy...

Relapse: The Refill will reportedly include five new songs.
By Shaheem Reid
Eminem's Relapse

Eminem is a man of his word. He promised fans he would drop off two doses of music this year, and it looks like it's happening. On December 21, the rhyme legend is putting out a new version of his Relapse LP, subtitled The Refill, according to RapRadar.com. It will include five brand-new songs as well as the hit "Forever" and "Taking My Ball," which was featured on the Eminem/Jay-z "Renegade Edition" of "DJ Hero."
And Slim Shady said this is just a taste of what's to come. "I want to deliver more material for the fans this year like I originally planned," Em told the Web site. "Hopefully these tracks on The Refill will tide the fans over until we put out Relapse 2 next year."

If Relapse marked the return of Slim Shady and his outrageous rhymes, then the sequel is shaping up to be Marshall Mathers' turn back in the spotlight.
In an interview on his Shade 45 satellite-radio station Tuesday night, Eminem explained the concept behind the forthcoming Relapse 2.
"[The album] is gonna be a lot different than people expect," Eminem told DJ Tony Touch. "As far as the contrast from the last album to this one, I got a couple of tracks with [D12's] Mr. Porter, two tracks with him so far. Four, possibly five with Just Blaze. The overall basis of this record, I went back to songs that are more emotionally driven. The last record I made, I think I was concentrating more on spitting. On this album,...

Eminem on stage at the 2009 VH1 Hip Hop Honors

Brooklyn, New York — For five years, VH1's "Hip Hop Honors" has paid homage to legendary hip-hop figures, from Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur to Big Daddy Kane. For their sixth show, which taped Wednesday night at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (and airs on VH1 on October 13), the event's organizers dedicated the entire program to a record label, the trailblazing house for hip-hop and R&B, Def Jam.
It's only right that the first Def Jam artist to be honored was the label's foundation and face for so many years, LL Cool J.
