In Chad, whose two main languages are Arabic and French, “lingui” is a distinct term meaning a “bond or connection”; the film’s alternate title gives it a more pious hue—the “sacred bonds.” But what’s fascinating and most novel about African cinema great Mahamat-Saleh Haroun’s new drama is the lack of an overtly religiose aura: the bonds created by its generation-spanning units of women are uplifting and resilient, while sought independently from Chad’s ruling, patriarchal class. To compare with conditions in the West, an analog would be to radical women’s networks, or even experiments in collective living and solidarity like communes.
Lingui, the Sacred Bonds is a glossier, more expensive-looking film than Haroun’s prior work; it has a slightly off-putting, color-corrected digital sheen, and less emphasis on the negative space present in the environment—all those hulking deserts and azure skies. Compared to the...

African multi-instrumentalist Ali Farka Touré had become a legend by the time he died in 2006. His music was used in a song for “Black Panther,” and he was thought of as a pioneer of African desert blues.
Touré’s son Vieux Farka Touré has also made waves around the world with his genre-crossing music. That music is celebrated in the new documentary “Vieux de Niafunké,” which includes an appearance by one of his enthusiastic fans, Matthew McConaughey.
“[McConaughey] was very excited to share his thought and his stories about Ali, and then speak a little bit about the musical traditions being handed down to Ali’s son, Vieux, and then a little bit about the culture of Mali,” says the doc’s director, Ian Campbell.
Campbell, a documentary cinematographer and director, was another one of Vieux Farka Touré’s admirers. “I’m a huge fan of Vieux [Farka Touré’s] and have been for many years,...

Mdou Moctar has previously claimed, “I don’t know what rock is exactly,” and that’s a good thing listening to the Niger-based Tuareg singer-songwriter’s latest album, Afrique Victime. There’s a unique sense of freedom in the record’s eight songs that most household-name rockers will never understand, since North American and European musicians have been inundated with the rigid strictures of verse-chorus-bridge songwriters since birth. And that’s not to say that Moctar grew up on Mars — he has declared himself a fan of Eddie Van Halen...

The band Onipa, which specializes in merging traditional African musical styles with contemporary electronics, shine a light on the “everyday struggles of hard working people” in their new video for “Promised Land.”
The lyrics offer a blunt indictment of contemporary inequality. “There was a promise of a promised land/Milk and honey, streets of gold, the promise of a dying man,” lead singer Kweku Sackey intones. In reality, that has become “a promise where love for all is indeed love for some, a twisted tale of emotional control, where only...

Vieux Farka Touré: Fondo (Six Degrees)
The late Ali Farka Touré’s 28-year-old son Vieux inherited his father’s talents. In both his singing and his stinging guitar style, Vieux is a chip off the old block; he taught himself guitar by playing along with his father’s albums and learning his tuning system. So it’s not surprising that he sometimes sounds exactly like his dad on his second album, Fondo (“the road”), especially on the traditional song “Walé” (all other tracks are Vieux originals), and certainly fans of his father’s music – especially his bluesy, keening guitar style – will enjoy this album.
