“Shōgun” is officially in the drama race for the Primetime Emmys.
FX has confirmed that the once limited or anthology series heavyweight has been officially submitted and accepted in the drama categories, where it will compete against Netflix’s “The Crown,” Apple’s “The Morning Show” and Prime Video’s “Fallout.” In addition, the network has shared exclusively with Variety the complete list of 40 Emmy submissions, which includes six submissions for directing, four for writing, and two eligible guest actors. HBO’s “Game of Thrones” currently holds the record for most nominations in a single year with 32. Could FX break the monumental record?
Following the announcement that FX, Hulu, and the estate of James Clavell — who authored the novel — are working on developing more seasons of the critically acclaimed series, “Shōgun” is now officially eligible to compete in the drama races after being commissioned as limited. The move puts the...

Plans feel inevitable when they come together as neatly as Toranaga’s (Hiroyuki Sanada) play for power over the throne of Japan. But the team behind Toranaga — and the rest of the characters on FX’s now complete miniseries “Shogun” — had to work just as hard as the warlord to finesse an ending that feels as right as this one does.
Episode 10, “A Dream of a Dream,” was a huge combined effort for editors Aika Miyake and Maria Gonzales, who each worked on three other episodes in addition to their shared credit on the finale. There were the normal challenges of assembling an edit, from placing incomplete VFX shots meant to convey the scale of Osaka to temp sound and score that will hopefully convey the loneliness of Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) missing Mariko’s (Anna Sawai) funeral. That’s a lot for any editor to hold in their mind — in...

Official companion podcasts for popular TV series are not a recent phenomenon. Ever since networks realized that they couldn’t leave all the analytical fun to fans, big time TV shows have been accompanied by network-sponsored audio complements.
HBO has been a frequent producer with podcasts for its dramas like Watchmen, House of the Dragon, Succession, and more. Other networks have since gotten in on the action like Paramount Network with Yellowstone, Showtime with Dexter: New Blood, and Apple TV+ with For All Mankind.
The acclaimed American TV brand FX, however, never seemed too keen on official tie-in podcasting despite presenting many intriguing prospects over the years like The Bear and Fargo. That all changed this year when the Disney-owned company launched FX’s Shōgun: The Official Podcast to accompany the weekly release of its epic miniseries Shōgun.

This article contains spoilers for Shogun episode 9.
Lady Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai) has a lot to live up to on Shōgun – or as Forrest Gump once said about Lieutenant Dan – a lot to “die up to.” Her father, Akechi Jinsai, saved the realm by killing the corrupt Kuroda-sama but was forced into committing seppuku for the act of treachery. Jinsai’s wife, children, and vassals were also executed – with only Mariko spared, having been sent off to marry the loathsome Toda Hirokatsu a.k.a. Buntaro (Shinnosuke Abe).
Since then, Mariko has been desperate to find a route to an honorable death so that she can both redeem her family name and join her loved ones in the echoes of eternity. In Shōgun episode 9 “Crimson Sky”, she finally gets that opportunity. Let’s talk about it … but first: a disclaimer.
As you may have noticed by now, suicidal ideation is a recurring theme on Shōgun.

[This story contains major spoilers from Shōgun’s ninth episode, “Crimson Sky.”]
Shōgun star Anna Sawai is bidding adieu to Lady Akechi Mariko.
The Japanese actor, who was born in New Zealand and raised in Japan, considers the acclaimed miniseries’ penultimate episode, “Crimson Sky,” to be her “final farewell” to her fan-favorite character. Written by Rachel Kondo/Caillin Puente and directed by Frederick E.O. Toye, the dramatic roller coaster of an episode concluded with Mariko sacrificing her life for Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada), all in an effort to signal Ishido Kazunari’s (Takehiro Hira) corruption and hopefully spark a rebellion. But as Sawai will soon find out, when an actor is fortunate enough to catch lightning in a bottle and create a beloved character, the audience and the world at large forever keep that character’s spirit alive — whether it’s through a compliment at a coffee shop, an interaction at a fan expo or even a question at a future press junket.

“Crimson Sky,” the penultimate episode of “Shogun,” delivers on its promise of blood and then some. But, true to the philosophy of the Eightfold Fence, one of the episode’s most powerful scenes finds triumph and cements the strength of the core characters even as their plans are (seemingly) defeated. Spoilers beyond this point, so only attempt to pass the castle gates at your own peril.
That is exactly what Lady Mariko (Anna Sawai) sets out to do at the top of the scene in question. She leads her retinue in an attempt to exit Osaka Castle, with sweeping overhead shots and an audience on the castle walls enforcing how Mariko is the center of attention and bringing the full weight of her authority to bear. She forces the issue of just how firmly the scheming Lord Ishido (Takehiro Hira) is holding everyone inside hostage. The ensuing standoff between castle guards,...

Plot: “Mrs. Davis” is the world’s most powerful Artificial Intelligence. Simone is the nun devoted to destroying Her. Who ya got?
Review: It takes a lot to catch me off guard. I have seen countless movies and television series over the years that have been billed as shocking or revolutionary, game-changing, and even unlike anything that has ever been seen before. Few of these have actually delivered on the hyperbole used to market them, but every now and then, I am truly surprised by the originality that is still possible. Mrs. Davis is one of those series that truly earns the distinction of being unlike anything else ever made. With the distinctive creative talents of Tara Hernandez and Damon Lindelof behind the scenes, Mrs. Davis echoes the satirical brilliance of Terry Gilliam’s Brazil with a modern technological flair for a hilarious, action-packed story and thought-provoking series about faith,...

The Walking Dead Season 11 Episode 4
Has anyone on The Walking Dead been through as much as Daryl Dixon? He’s been tortured several times at this point, including the most insidious torture method ever devised by Negan. He’s been injured in pretty much every possible way someone can be injured. His motorcycles have long since stopped running. His friends won’t let him retreat into the woods like the smelly hermit he longs to be. The only love affair he’s had on the show has ended in ambivalent tragedy. To be fair, he’s got the coolest weapon and the coolest (only?) Dog, but aside from that, he’s watched pretty much every one of his friends and his last remaining family member suffer and die around him, and yet “Rendition” finds a new and different way to torture him courtesy...

The Walking Dead Season 11 Episode 3
“Hunted” opens in a flurry of action. Blades and arrows come flying in out of the darkness. Most of Maggie’s companions stumble and fall, as do their hunters. Some get back up and scramble away towards safety, or in pursuit of someone. Most don’t. At least, not until they presumably turn into walkers and join the omnipresent background noise of the undead. As far as cold openings go, this one runs hot, and while it burns itself out quickly, it’s a perfect set-up for the following episode, which features The Walking Dead in hunting mode for both the A plot and the B plot.
At the center of both plots is hunger. Everyone in Alexandria is hungry, slowly starving to death as rations peter out and the fields fail to provide enough to sustain the population.

New Emmy rules mandate only five nomination slots in most categories in which limited series and movies contend exclusively. The ballot for Best Movie/Limited Directing lists 95 submissions, which is enough to trigger a sixth slot. The nominees last year were:
Winner — “Chernobyl” (Johan Renck) “Escape at Dannemora” (Ben Stiller) “Fosse/Verdon” — “Glory” (Jessica Yu) “Fosse/Verdon” — “Who’s Got the Pain?” (Thomas Kail) “A Very English Scandal” (Stephen Frears) “When They See Us” (Ava DuVernay)
None of those programs contend again this year. Lisa Cholodenko won this award in 2015 for “Olive Kitteridge” and contends now for “Unbelievable.” Before winning the Emmy for the former, she won the equivalent award from the Directors Guild of America, which shares voters with the directors’ branch of the academy that votes on this Emmy. The DGA passed over her “Unbelievable” work for Vince Gilligan‘s “Breaking Bad” sequel “El Camino.” Gilligan is a four-time Best...

The 2020 Emmy ballots have been released by the Television Academy, so we now know which shows, actors, etc. are in contention for this year’s golden statues. HBO’s “Watchmen” accounts for eight entries on the performer ballot, including lead actors Regina King and Jeremy Irons. The uniquely timely limited series about mask-wearing and racial injustice is a loose adaptation of the 1980s comic book about vigilante superheroes, which only lasted a single volume. In any good hero's journey, there's always a side-quest. You have to recover this artifact in order to defeat that demon, you have to recover this holy weapon, or that magical key, or that MacGuffin to continue on with whatever the larger journey is.
Given the solid cast of characters of American Gods, it's not surprising that characters will be given a side quest or two along the way, usually at Wednesday's behest. The gang is dispatched to a variety of places; Salim and the Jinn get sent to retrieve Odin's spear, Laura and Mad Sweeney get sent to track down Shadow, Wednesday and Nancy go for a drive, and Mama-ji gets a chance to swap shifts at the diner in order to participate in the war.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains details about tonight’s season 2 finale of Westworld on HBO
From the moment Dr. Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins) died at the end of Westworld‘s season 1, a robot apocalypse has ensued throughout this past season, with hosts and humans as collateral damage. And while the Delos Swat team appears to have quelled the android uprise, we’re left with the notion at the end of tonight’s 1 1/2 hour episode 20, “The Passenger”, written by husband and wife Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, and directed by Frederick E.O. Toye, that our world is about to be stirred up by the likes of robo-Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood), robo-Charlotte Hale (Tessa Thompson), and the venerable host Bernard (Jeffrey Wright).
However, the most jarring part of tonight’s season 2 finale came in the post-credits epilogue. Doubts are raised greatly here about the Man in Black’s (Ed Harris...

The second season finale of “Westworld” will premiere on HBO this Sunday, June 24. Little is known about the episode, titled “The Passenger,” beyond its trailer (watch above) and its brief log line: “In the season finale, everyone converges at the Valley Beyond.” Like the first season finale, it has an extended run time of 90 minutes. Most episodes of the show have run about 60 minutes, with both season premieres and the episode titled “The Riddle of the Sphinx” clocking around 70. Also like the last finale, which was titled “The Bicameral Mind,” this one was written by showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. The married couple wrote three episodes together from the first season, which was subtitled “The Maze,” but this is their only scripting collaboration of the second season, which is subtitled “The Door.”

In case the headline above isn’t clear enough, let us be absolutely crystal now: Below, there will be spoilers for and through Episode 7 of “Westworld.” And in case you’re not tracking episode numbers, that means everything we’ve seen this season is in play. So, consider yourself warned.
Now, as far as we can tell, there are seven major reasons everyone should be discussing HBO’s twisty drama after Episode 7. No, they don’t all revolve around the massive reveal that Bernard is a robot under Dr. Ford’s control. But not all of them are good reasons, either.
Fan Theories
Ok, Bernard is a robot. This popular fan theory that’s been bogging down message boards since early October was finally proven true. (1) But so what? Those of you who “knew” it ahead of time: Do you feel satisfaction in being proven right? Is that better than being surprised?...

“Westworld” keeps surprising viewers with new twists and turns. Last week’s episode finally introduced audiences to Tessa Thompson’s character, Charlotte, the Delos board representative who has plans of her own on how to oversee certain transitions. Maeve (Thandie Newton) also got some new adjustments to her personality and at the end of the episode, we were all left wondering what happened to Elsie (Shannon Woodward).
Sunday’s episode, titled “Trompe L’Oeil,” will hopefully give us more insight on all these new developments. While we wait for the latest episode, HBO released new images to keep us guessing.

We’ve officially reached the halfway mark on HBO’s thrilling new series “Westworld” and things are getting even more compelling inside the Western themed amusement park.
Last week’s episode had Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) experience a new awakening, as well as revealed that someone was broadcasting satellite data out of the park. What was probably one of the most enticing moments was when Maeve (Thandie Newton) once again woke herself up while she was getting fixed. In anticipation of episode 6, HBO released six new images to give viewers some insight on what’s to come.

Spoiler Alert: President John F. Kennedy died on November 22, 1963 and nothing Stephen King can write will ever change that. Oh maybe he’ll change it for a little while, but it will change right back if you ever come out of the closet. That’s the basic premise of Hulu’s miniseries on the best-selling 2011 Stephen King novel 11/22/63.
“If you do something that really fucks with the past, the past fucks with you,” Warns diner owner Al Templeton, played by Chris Cooper, to his casual friend, the local high school English teacher Jake Epping, played by James Franco. Templeton has a tendency to age in spurts, not the regular acceleration of ageing that comes when the body ages, but in three-year-spurts that happen in about two minutes.

Airs Sundays at 9pm Et
Simon Howell: Of course this was going to happen. The Good Wife’s latest seasonal pivot point, in which a major character apparently heads to the slammer, happens to be surrounded with a whole lot of its most broadly silly material. “The Trial” is up to a lot of things – shifting perspectives, light social commentary, romantic workplace comedy, Law & Order episode – but for the most part it manages to hold together reasonably well as an episode. If nothing else, it makes clear that the Kings have no interest in signposting just where this season is meant to be heading, except that it will continue to be defined by Alicia’s campaign and her increasingly unreliable ethical compass. To ponder the episode’s developments and assess the season so far,...

The Good Wife, Season 6, Episode 5: “Shiny Objects”
Written by Keith Eisner
Directed by Frederick E. O. Toye
Airs Sundays at 9pm Et on CBS
One of the particular strengths of The Good Wife is its uncanny sense of series memory. With well over 100 episodes’ worth of long-standing character relationships, tertiary characters, and running gags to draw upon, it’s rare that a new episode comes down the pike that doesn’t reward long-time viewers, even if it’s just in a minute way. “Shiny Objects” is, on the surface, a prototypical latter-day Good Wife episode, in that it offers up a case of the week while keeping the season’s master plot humming along, but it also manages (for better and worse) to lean on several long-standing relationships and character beats to an unusual degree.
The least of these bears special mention. This week, it was announced that Archie Panjabi...

Airs Sundays at 9pm (Et) on NBC
When the list of shows for the 2013-2014 television season was announced, a particular show caught the eye of many; Believe, which came from the collaborative efforts of Jj Abrams and Alfonso Cuaron. Unfortunately, after a midseason premiere, the show received a cancellation notice, making its first season the only one, barring a revival down the line. The adventures of Bo, Tate, Winter, Skouras, and Orchestra came to a close with last night’s finale, in an entertaining end to the show that serves to highlight some of its strengths.
The development of the relationship between Bo and Tate has been a strong aspect of the series, and is a highlight of the finale as well. Watching the two develop a...

Person of Interest, Season 3, Episode 21: “Beta”
Written by Dan Dietz and Sean Hennen
Directed by Frederick E.O. Toye
Airs Tuesdays at 10pm Et on CBS
In every story, there are certain necessary contrivances that, while you wish could be side-stepped, the narrative simply needs to enact. In Lost, for example, the survivors need to leave the Island to realize that they belong there. Even though it’s eye-roll inducing, it’s a direction the story needs to take and is allowed that. The same can be said of “Beta”.
In the case of Person of Interest, its story called for the fact that the very existence of Finch (Michael Emerson) would at some point put the life of his former fiancée Grace Hendricks (Carrie Preston) at risk, despite her not even being aware that he’s still alive. It’s a tired and tried plot element that anyone with...

Person of Interest, Season 3, Episode 9: “The Crossing”
Written by Denise The
Directed by Frederick E. O. Toye
Airs Tuesdays at 10pm Et on CBS
“The Crossing”, the second installment in Person of Interest‘s three-part arc, picks up directly where “Endgame” left off with Reese (Jim Caviezel) and Carter (Tarji P. Henson) transporting the head of nefarious organization Hr, Alonzo Quinn (Clarke Peters), to the FBI headquarters in New York City. Making matters more difficult, Hr has put a hit out on Reese to every criminal in the city. One thing’s for sure (mainly from the promos that CBS has put out): someone from the merry little Number Squad is going to bite the bullet, but which one is it going to be? Could it be Reese, who is in the cross hairs of every criminal in New York; is it Fusco (Kevin Chapman), who finds himself...

Person of Interest fans are probably still reeling from Tuesday’s gut-wrenching episode, which [Spoiler Alert!] saw the shocking demise of Taraji P. Henson’s tough-as-nails cop Joss Carter.
So what does a set feel like when a show is filming one of its main character’s final scenes?
Hell if I know! Back in October, there are few if any signs of the typical sadness I’m expecting when I arrive on set for Henson’s last moment – a midnight shoot on Hudson and Houston, where few passersby are out strolling but security is tight nonetheless. It is, after all, a...

The Good Wife, Season 5, Episode 6: “The Next Week”
Written by Craig Turk
Directed by Frederick E.O. Toye
Airs Sundays at 9pm (Et) on CBS
The political side of The Good Wife sits on the sidelines this week in favor of the continued tight focus on the personal and the legal. Florrick/Agos is in deep financial trouble, Lockhart/Gardner is looking to avoid a malpractice suit, Will has a client claiming innocence and a DNA test saying otherwise, and someone is hacking the computers at the Florrick residence.
First, a note on the legal side, which is all sorts of relevant, timely, and fascinating. In the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision earlier this year in Maryland v. King, the exact limits of DNA testing for arrestees are distressingly unclear. Never one to avoid leaping into the fray, The Good Wife takes the issue on directly, as a...
