Her performance in Martin Scorsese's Killers Of The Flower Moon saw Lily Gladstone become part of a global conversation – and got her a groundbreaking Oscar nomination. As she tells us, though, she's only just getting started...
Lily Gladstone has been putting her feet up.
You’d be forgiven for assuming that Gladstone — the first Native American actress to have been nominated for an Academy Award — has a lot on her plate. And she has, but at home in Seattle, post-Oscars, she’s spent some well-earned time on the sofa, specifically watching The Bear Season 2. She’s not likely to be hanging around watching Carmy in his Chicago kitchen for too long, though.
After her staggering, soulful performance as Mollie Burkhart, the beleaguered woman at the centre of a vast murder plot in Martin Scorsese’s epic drama Killers Of The Flower Moon — and the Oscar nomination to go with...

The official trailer for Apple TV+’s Fancy Dance sees Lily Gladstone’s Jax on a mission to find her missing sister, as the risk of losing custody of her niece, Roki (Isabel Deroy-Olson), looms.
Following her sister’s disappearance, Jax and Roki have been scraping by on the Seneca-Cayuga reservation in Oklahoma, according to the film’s description. As Roki prepares for the upcoming powwow, the women hit the road to try to find Roki’s mother in time for the event.
“What begins as a search gradually turns into a far deeper investigation into the complexities and contradictions of Indigenous women moving through a colonized world while at the mercy of a failed justice system,” the logline reads.
Gladstone and Deroy-Olson star alongside Ryan Begay, Crystle Lightning, Audrey Wasilewski and Shea Whigham.
Fancy Dance premiered to critical acclaim at 2023’s Sundance Film Festival but didn’t receive distribution until over a year later.

Rebecca Ferguson’s unbound potential was explored and exploited long before she found an outlet in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films. Her authority over the craft made her a sensational and sought-after talent in Hollywood almost overnight after hard launching into the action blockbuster genre with Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation in 2015.

A couple months ago, we learned that The Devil’s Bath – the latest genre movie from Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, the directing duo behind the disturbing horror films Goodnight Mommy (the original, not the Naomi Watts remake) and The Lodge – had been acquired by Shudder, with the streaming service planning to release it in North America, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand sometime this summer. Now we know the exact release date. The Devil’s Bath will be available to stream on Shudder as of June 28th.
The Devil’s Bath – which has been described as “utterly harrowing”, “chilling”, and “impactful” – is a German-language film that is set in 1750 Austria, at a time when villages were surrounded by deep forests. There, a deeply religious woman has married her beloved, but her mind and heart soon grow heavy as her life becomes a long list of chores and expectations. Day after day,...

Now that awards season has come to an end and the dust has settled, it’s time to reflect on the past 10 or so months. There can only be a select group of actors who walk away with an Academy Award each year. For those who may be disappointed that Lily Gladstone failed to take home the Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” fear not. While she may not have won the biggest prize, she still wound up winning awards season.
Gladstone, who has shared the fact they are nonbinary and uses both she/they pronouns, has clearly had a massive breakout year. Let us count the ways here:

Set in northeastern Oklahoma’s Indian Country, Fancy Dance is based on Tremblay’s original screenplay co-written with Miciana Alise and centers on a young woman’s disappearance from a reservation and her family’s urgent attempts to locate her.

For over a year, director Erica Tremblay’s acclaimed Sundance drama “Fancy Dance” went undistributed without a means to see it. Its star Lily Gladstone, Oscar-nominated for another Native American-led film, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” has taken time from her awards campaign to champion the film and urge anyone in Hollywood to support it and give it a home.
Today, that effort has finally paid off. Apple Original Films has acquired the global rights to “Fancy Dance” and will release it both in theaters and on Apple TV+ later this year. A release date was not specified, and terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Once a pillar of its business, the UK videogame chain Game will stop accepting trade-in games next month.
For years, there was one reliable way of making the ferociously expensive hobby of videogaming at least somewhat affordable: trading in your old games for new.
About a decade or so ago, the practice was so common – with the shelves at UK retailer Game stacked with second-hand games sold for a fraction of their original price – that think pieces regularly popped up questioning whether the pre-owned market was killing the industry.
There were even rumours that console manufacturers were thinking about blocking their users from running second-hand games on their systems.
It now looks as though that whole trade-in era is over – at least for the above-mentioned chain of stores, Game.
Eurogamer, citing several staff who work for Game, reports that the retailer will stop accepting trade-in discs and cartridges from the 16th of February.

The latest trailer for Netflix and DreamWorks Animation’s upcoming animated film, Orion and the Dark, has Ike Barinholtz voicing the role of Light, Dark’s nemesis, as Orion, voiced by Jacob Tremblay, learns there’s nothing to be afraid of in the night.
“Everyday I bring brightness and hope to the world, and you bring the exact opposite,” Light tells Dark, voiced by Paul Walter Hauser, as their comic light versus darkness battle plays out while an anxious Orion confronts his greatest fears in life.
“Oh, whatever!” a gloomy Dark responds as his unlikely friendship with Orion grows as Tremblay’s character must shed his adolescent anxiety over much in life to overcome his worst fear: the dark. The moral of their journey together is stop letting fear control your life and embrace the joy of living.

The first look at Netflix’s upcoming film Orion and the Dark promises a sweet adventure from Being John Malkovich scribe Charlie Kaufman.
Led by Jacob Tremblay and Paul Walter Hauser, DreamWork’s latest CG animated movie serves as Sean Charmatz’s directorial debut, and is based on Emma Yarlett’s book of the same name.
Tremblay plays Orion, shy, unassuming, harboring a secret crush — your average kid in elementary school. But underneath that normal exterior, he’s a ball of adolescent anxiety. While harboring fears of things like bees, dogs, the ocean, cell phone waves, murderous gutter clowns and falling off cliffs, there’s one thing above all else that terrifies Orion: the dark.
It’s something he must face on a nightly basis, but when the embodiment of that fear appears at his bedside one night, Orion is whisked away by Dark (Hauser) on a roller-coaster adventure around the globe.

When it was first announced that Mike Flanagan – who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – would be directing another King adaptation, The Life of Chuck, there were two actors already attached to the project: Tom Hiddleston (Loki) and Mark Hamill (Star Wars). Once filming got underway in Alabama earlier this month (the independent production was able to secure a SAG interim agreement that allows it to film while the Screen Actors Guild strike is still going on), it was revealed that Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave), Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Jacob Tremblay (The Predator) are also in the cast. And now Flanagan has taken to social media to reveal the names of the rest of the characters – a list that includes A Nightmare on Elm Street...

For OpenAI, the lawsuits just keep on coming. The company behind the innovative chatbot ChatGPT is the target of a copyright infringement suit organized by the Authors Guild and headlined by scribes like George R.R. Martin, Jodi Picoult, and John Grisham.
The suit was filed on September 19 in a New York federal court. The plaintiffs include 17 authors, led by literary titans like Martin, Picoult, Grisham, David Baldacci, Sylvia Day, Jonathan Franzen, and Elin Hilderbrand. The writers are arguing that OpenAI has enabled “flagrant and harmful infringements of plaintiffs’ registered copyrights” by building ChatGPT upon “systematic theft on a mass scale.”
As evidence of that theft, the Authors Guild pointed to ChatGPT-written works like “A Dawn of Direwolves.” The unauthorized Game of Thrones prequel uses the same characters Martin created for his unfinished book series A Song of Ice and Fire.
“It is imperative that we stop this theft in its...

Authors are escalating efforts to block artificial intelligence companies from using their copyrighted works to train artificial intelligence systems, this time taking aim at Meta and OpenAI in proposed class-action lawsuits.
Michael Chabon and other decorated writers of books and screenplays sued Meta on Tuesday in California federal court, accusing the company of copyright infringement for harvesting mass quantities of books across the web, which were then used to produce infringing works that allegedly violate their copyrights. OpenAI was sued on Sept. 8 in an identical class action alleging the firms “benefit commercially and profit handsomely from their unauthorized and illegal” collection of the authors’ books. They seek a court order that would require the companies to destroy AI systems that were trained on copyright-protected works.
The lawsuit is the latest volley from creators in a barrage of court challenges over the legality of the way large language models are trained.

Comedian Sarah Silverman isn’t in a laughing mood these days as she and two others have sued Meta and OpenAI for using their original content without their permission.
Silverman, Richard Kadrey and Christopher Golden filed a lawsuit in California against Facebook’s parent company and ChatGPT for allegedly using their content to train their artificial intelligence programs.
The lawsuits allege that most of the material used in their training comes from copyrighted works used “without consent, without credit and without compensation.”
The catalyst for their lawsuit is reportedly leaked information about how the two companies operated their artificial intelligence department. The three authors then found that their books were included in the materials used to hone AI capabilities in conversing with a more human tone.
The books in question were specified in the lawsuits as Silverman’s The Bedwetter, Kadrey’s Sandman Slim and Golden’s Ararat.

Sarah Silverman is part of a new copyright class action suit against OpenAI, which alleges that ChatGPT was illegally trained on copyrighted books.
Silverman is one of three lead plaintiffs, alongside the authors Christopher Golden and Richard Kadrey. They claim, on behalf of the prospective class, that their books were part of a trove of copyrighted material “copied by OpenAI” and used to train ChatGPT “without consent, without credit, and without compensation.”
The new lawsuit is similar to one brought by authors Paul Tremblay and Mona Awad against OpenAI earlier this year.

The burgeoning AI industry has just crossed another major milestone, with two new class-action lawsuits calling into question whether this technology violates privacy rights, scrapes intellectual property without consent and negatively affects the public at large. Experts believe they’re likely to be the first in a wave of legal challenges to companies working on such products.
Both suits were filed on Wednesday and target OpenAI, a research lab consisting of both a nonprofit arm and a corporation, over ChatGPT software, a “large language model” capable of generating human-like responses to text input.

Another lawsuit has been filed against OpenAI over its unauthorized collection of information across the web to train its artificial intelligence chatbot, this time by authors who say ChatGPT infringes on copyrights to their novels.
The proposed class action filed in San Francisco federal court on Wednesday alleges that OpenAI “relied on harvesting mass quantities” of copyright-protected works “without consent, without credit, and without compensation.” It seeks a court order that the company infringed on writers’ works when it illegally downloaded copies of novels to train its AI system and that ChatGPT’s answers constitute infringement.

In its broad outlines, Cold Copy is extremely topical. “Journalism isn’t a vocation,” Tracee Ellis Ross says in the opening scene, as high-powered television interviewer Diane Heger. “It’s a persona. It has to be.” She isn’t necessarily wrong. Look at some recent examples, such as Tucker Carlson’s leaked text messages disparaging his supposed hero Donald Trump, and it’s easy to see how Roxine Helberg’s first feature might touch a nerve. Her screenplay is fascinating in the themes it lays out at the start. The film has vivid performances from Ross, Bel Powley as Diane’s student, Mia Scott, and Jacob Tremblay as the subject and ultimately victim of Mia’s shoddy journalism. But Cold Copy is also exasperating in its lack of focus and in its missed opportunities.
Mia, a graduate student taking Diane’s class at an unnamed university, is the film’s focus,...

In the proliferation of subgenres, the media noir is perhaps the rarest. From the ’50s alone, Billy Wilder’s Ace in the Hole, Fritz Lang’s While the City Sleeps, and Alexander Mackendrick’s Sweet Smell of Success spring to mind. Just lately, with the exception of Dan Gilroy’s Nightcrawler (2014), there hasn’t been too much evidence of a renaissance, but Roxine Helberg’s satisfying feature debut taps back into the same dark wells of oral ambivalence corruption and power, casting the excellent Bel Powley as a journalism student who will do whatever it takes to make it in the cut-throat world of TV news broadcasting.
It’s possible that the media noir was supplanted by the white-knight school of journalism movies, which has been going strong since All the President’s Men (1976) and struck Oscar gold as recently as 2015’s Spotlight But that was in the dinosaur print era,...

Ambition intrigues us. Since ancient Greek and Roman times we have watched eagerly as men have been ensnared—and later ruined—by it. People are now perhaps closer to ambition than ever before in the age of capitalism’s do-or-die pact with humanity, but that also means we’re arguably more intimately familiar with the subsequent downfall.
In Roxane Helberg’s directorial debut “Cold Copy,” we’re introduced to that undoing through the lens of hard-hitting journalism, a field where ambition is practically mounted on every desk name-plate. The film’s take on the tensions that lie in launching a career in journalism and doing whatever you can to keep it is a worthy one, if only off the back of the film’s strong leads, Bel Powley and Tracee Ellis Ross.

As I mentioned last week, nostalgia appears to be playing a big role in this just-started cinema Summer season. The remake of that 1990s buddy comedy may just be the tip of the iceberg. For this holiday weekend’s big, really big as Ed Sullivan would say, movie release, go back just two or three more years to 1989. That year may be best known for the Batman box office blockbuster, but it’s also a watershed moment for feature Animation, particularly at the “Mouse House”. Disney feature animation was just beginning to snap out of a creative stupor as the modest successes of The Great Mouse Detective and Oliver & Company began to offset the losses of the fantasy debacle The Black Cauldron. This is all covered in the superb documentary feature Waking Sleeping Beauty. And then two Broadway “whiz-kids,” thought that the company should return to classic fairy tales with a Tony-worthy musical score.

“The Little Mermaid” hasn’t even hit theatres yet, and fans are already asking for a spin-off series focusing on the adventures of the film’s three beloved sea creatures — Flounder the fish, Ariel’s best friend; Sebastian the crab, King Triton’s royal court composer; and Scuttle the seagull, Ariel’s friend and self-proclaimed expert on human stuff.

This post contains mild spoilers for "The Little Mermaid."
Get out your dinglehoppers, everyone: Disney's live-action version of the 1989 classic animated film "The Little Mermaid" opens at the end of this month. The film stars Halle Bailey as Ariel, the mermaid longing for adventure. She gives up her voice to the sea witch, Ursula (Melissa McCarthy), to have a chance to live on land, and to remain there, she must receive a true love's kiss from Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) in three days. As you might expect, that won't be an easy task.
Helping Ariel navigate this new world are her little buddies Flounder (voice of Jacob Tremblay) and Scuttle (voice of Awkwafina). I recently spoke to the actors who play the fish and bird sidekicks about their roles, working with director Rob Marshall, Scuttle's new song, the unusual voiceover situation they were in with this film, and its potential impact on future generations.

As the harsh, unforgiving waves crash with abandon in the opening moments of Rob Marshall’s “The Little Mermaid,” there is a sense that a true loss of innocence is on the brink. In this new live-action adaptation things are not as bubblegum sweet and bright as the last time we visited Ariel’s story. The sea is rougher, less forgiving.
There is, as Ariel sings in the famed “Part of Your World,” something starting inside the heart of a tender, curious, and desperate mermaid the same way it did in 1989, but Marshall’s vision finds the raw humanity within the story, grounding a once-completely fantastical tale with a strong sense of realism that works to its advantage.

Jacob Tremblay, the voice of Flounder in Disney's new "The Little Mermaid," thinks fans have been a little too quick to judge. The internet was rocked after promotional images revealed that the live-action film did indeed include a reimagined version of Ariel's lovable sidekick, Flounder. Only this recreation was a far cry from the canonically plump fish many fans already know and love. Instead of a rotund yellow fish, the new Flounder appeared to be mostly gray, flattened out, and relatively realistic. But as Tremblay explained at the world premiere on May 8, he's always been a fan of the updated look, and maybe you will be, too.
"I actually saw it for the first time in the audition," Tremblay told The Hollywood Reporter of Flounder's controversial design. "I thought it was really cool because I like how they're doing it to make them look like real animals." Other characters who...

The internet had quite a splashy reaction when images were first revealed of the updated Flounder in Disney’s new live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid, and Jacob Tremblay, who voices the friendly fish, is weighing in.
“I actually saw it for the first time in the audition — [director] Rob [Marshall] had showed me. I thought it was really cool because I like how they’re doing it to make them look like real animals,” Tremblay told The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s world premiere on Monday. “In rehearsals too I had seen the other characters’ designs and thought it was really cool, and then I finally got to see the movie last night and I thought they worked really well. I couldn’t really imagine it a different way, if that makes sense. I think it worked perfectly; they were really smart about it.

Halle Bailey is making a splash as the star of The Little Mermaid and during the Hollywood premiere of the Disney film she opened up about finally having audiences see her as Ariel on the big screen.
“This moment means everything to me, I’m so grateful to be here,” she said. “I just feel really honored and I’m happy the day has finally come where we can all watch it.”
When the trailer for the live-action film was released, reactions to Bailey as Ariel became a trend on social media. For Bailey, the cultural impact the film will have on the young people of color is important and something that she experienced growing up.
“It means the world to me, especially for the beautiful babies to be able to see a reflection of themselves,” she added. “I am just honored to be a part of this and be...

William Sleator’s eerie dystopian 1974 YA sci-fi novel House of Stairs is getting an adaptation.
Before I Wake and Doctor Sleep actor Jacob Tremblay will star, Variety reports. Wi Ding Ho (Terrorizers) will direct.
Taking place in the near future, the dystopian genre film “follows five 16-year-old orphans who wake up to find themselves in a strange building with no walls, no ceiling, and no floor: nothing but endless flights of stairs leading in every direction, seemingly infinite. To find an exit, the five teenagers must learn to deal with the others’ disparate personalities, the lack of privacy and comfort, their clear helplessness, and a machine that only feeds them under increasingly ominous situations.”
While House of Stairs is described as an “elevated genre movie,” this setup sounds like an absolute nightmare.
Matthew McInerney-Lacombe pens the screenplay for this adaptation.
“William Sleator’s books have inspired generations of young readers.
