MGM celebrated its centennial on April 17th. Marcus Lowe established the studio by merging Metro Pictures, Goldwyn Pictures and Louis B. Mayer Pictures. Boasting it had “more stars than there are in heaven,” MGM may have been the biggest studio during the Golden Age of Hollywood, it has gone through many owners and regimes over the years but seems to on terra firma since Amazon acquired MGM in 2021. In fact, Amazon MGM Studios won best screenplay Oscar for “American Fiction.” And speaking of Academy Awards, MGM has earned numerous statuettes over the years. Here’s a look at five Best Picture winners produced between 1929-1958.

The five artists chosen for the 2024 Kennedy Center Honors are likely being informed now in the month of April about their selections. That’s according to recent honoree Billy Crystal, who said he was told last April and had to keep quiet until mid-summer when the 2023 Kch choices were officially announced.
Crystal was honored a few months ago in Washington, D.C. for the annual CBS event, along with Renee Fleming, Barry Gibb, Queen Latifah and Dionne Warwick. Who do we think will be among the honorees announced this summer? Tour our photo gallery above to see who are our choices for the top 50 entertainers who need to be selected soon. You can also visit our forums thread where we have a much lengthier list of hundreds of eligible artists.

This year’s Tonys will be held on June 16, so the American Theatre Wing will likely be announcing its Lifetime Achievement Award recipient in the near future. Who do you think should take home this prestigious trophy, which honors an individual’s body of work? It has gone to veteran stage performers, directors, choreographers, playwrights, songwriters, producers and designers. In some years we get multiple recipients.
Last year these honors went to actor Joel Grey and composer John Kander. The following living male Broadway vets have also received this award in the past and thus won’t be chosen again: Paul Gemignani, Alan Ayckbourn, Athol Fugard, Marshall W. Mason, Tommy Tune, James Earl Jones, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Harold Wheeler.
Here are 10 possibilities featured in our poll below, all accomplished men over the age of 65. Vote to let us know who you’d like to see honored. And take a...

With the 96th Academy Awards in the history books, it’s time to become obsessed over the 77th Tony Awards. Nominations are April 30th with the awards set to air on CBS on June 16 from Lincoln Center. Among the contenders for Tony nominations are many musicals based on movies including “Back to the Future,’ “The Notebook,” “Water for Elephants” and “The Outsiders”: high profile revivals such as Ibsen’s “An Enemy of the People” with Jeremy Strong; “Cabaret” with Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne and the Who’s “Tommy”; imports from London and transfers from off-Broadway.
Do you remember the Tony landscape 50 years ago? The 28th annual honors took place April 21, 1974, at the Shubert Theater and aired on ABC. And to say it was a star-studded affair is something of an understatement. Robert Preston, Peter Falk, Cicely Tyson, Florence Henderson hosted; presenters included Al Pacino –-let’s hope he had better...

Hulu’s acclaimed “Only Murders in the Building,” currently vying for 11 Emmys, has gone all razzle dazzle in its third season. Make that rattle dazzle! Beleaguered Broadway director Oliver (Martin Short) was hoping for a comeback on the Great White Way with the mystery thriller “Death Rattle.” But when his leading man (Paul Rudd) is murdered, he decides to turn the straight play into a musical, “Death Rattle Dazzle!” And in the third episode, Meryl Streep’s nervous journeyman actress and Ashley Park’s leading lady performed the show-stopping ballad “Look for the Light” co-written by Sara Bareilles. One almost forgot the prime suspects in “Death Rattle Dazzle!” are the infant Pickwick triplets.
The 1959 multiple Tony winner “Redhead” also has a rather strange plot for a musical: a serial killer is stalking women in London in the 1880s during the time Jack the Ripper was terrorizing the city. Sounds like a real toe-tapper.

In the early 1980s, Dolly Parton began working on The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. The film, while perhaps not a critical success, opened at No. 1 in the United States and earned Parton a Golden Globe nomination. It was also a nightmare to make. Parton described the challenge of making the movie at a particularly low point in her personal life. She also admitted that in trying to land a friend a job, she got someone else fired. Parton explained why all of this made her feel that everyone involved in the film were “losers.”
Dolly Parton said ‘The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas’ was a miserable experience
Parton was extremely close with her bandleader, Gregg Perry. She wanted to bring him in to work on the music for The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas with her. Unfortunately, Perry’s hiring meant that the sitting musical supervisor lost his job.

The 76th annual Tony Awards have already made history. For the first time, two of the acting nominees identify as non-binary: Harrison Ghee who is contending for lead actor in musical for “Some Like It Hot” and Alex Newell, vying for featured actor in a musical for “Shucked.” Their nominations have been warmly embraced. But 40 years ago, a history-making acceptance led to death threats.

This year’s Tony race for Best Musical Revival has two Stephen Sondheim shows (“Into the Woods” and “Sweeney Todd”) in contention. Will one of them win or will they cancel each other out? Let’s go over both of them.
“Into the Woods” combines several fairy tales and explores the consequences of the characters’ quests. The main storyline focuses on a childless baker and his wife as they go into the woods to break a spell set upon them by a witch. There they run into various classic fairy tale characters, all before revealing what happens after “happily ever after.”
The original production won three Tonys in 1988 for Best Actress (Musical) for Joanna Gleason, Best Musical Book for James Lapine, and Best Original Score for Sondheim. Meanwhile, Best Musical that year went to “The Phantom of the Opera,” which wound up with six other awards. The last remounting of...

Joni Mitchell graced Broadway to celebrate the opening night of Almost Famous at Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre in New York City on Thursday.
The iconic musician — who showed up with a blue flat cap and her iconic brands — was seen posing with some of the cast, and Cameron Crow, the director of the beloved 2000 film. (Crowe co-wrote lyrics for the Broadway show.)
Mitchell told People that she enjoyed the show “even better than the movie,” which won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, after being based on a Rolling Stone teenage journalist named William Miller.

Dean Martin: King Of Cool director Tom Donahue: “I worked with a really brilliant story producer, author, professor, named Ron Marasco. And Ron really wanted to break down the elements of cool and did it in such an interesting way.”
What is the mystery of cool? What about Dean Martin makes him the epitome of cool and so irresistible to so many different types of people? Food and style and how all the parts relate is what Tom Donahue untangles through interviews, ranging from Dean’s daughter Deana to Jerry Lewis’s son Scotty. There is former assistant choreographer Tommy Tune speaking about Dean’s dancing prowess and Angie Dickinson, Florence Henderson, Peter Bogdanovic and Alec Baldwin singing his praises. Jon Hamm reads excerpts from a poem in his honor, Henry Jaglom quotes Orson Welles on Dean’s genius, and the owner of his favourite restaurant talks about him as a dinner guest.

The late Ann Reinking is being honored with a scholarship in her name.
The $5,000 grant from Off the Lane will be awarded annually to a young dancer moving to New York City to help them in their artistic endeavors. Reinking herself moved from Seattle to New York City to pursue dancing.
Reinking died in December at age 71. She got her acting start in a Seattle Opera House production of “Bye Bye Birdie” in 1965. She is best known for playing Roxie Hart in 1977’s “Chicago,” replacing Gwen Verdon. She reprised the part for musical’s 1996 revival.
“I believe Annie would have loved having her name on the Ann Reinking Scholarship Program,” Reinking’s husband Peter Talbert said in a statement. “Like so many young dancers coming to New York, she struggled to find a foothold in a strange city. Short of money and friends, Annie persevered and found her way forward,...

Arthur P. Siccardi, a longtime Broadway production supervisor whose five-decade career included work on such notable original and revival stagings as Sweeney Todd, Whose Life is it Anyway?, Sunday in the Park with George, Gypsy, The Heidi Chronicles and Sunset Boulevard, to name a few, died December 23 of complications from pneumonia. He was 89.
His death was announced by his son Drew Siccardi.
Born in Englewood, NJ, and raised in Fort Lee, Siccardi began his professional life as a minor league baseball pitcher for the Johnson City Cardinals from 1951-53. An employment offer to work as a show carpenter on the original national tour of Gypsy led to what would be his life’s work.
Siccardi established Arthur Siccardi Theatrical Services in 1975 at the suggestion of Michael Bennett, and he’d go on to work with such notable directors as Mike Nichols, Jerome Robbins, Tommy Tune, Gower Champion, Trevor Nunn and Michael Blakemore.

We all may know someone who’s more than a little “Noel-nutty”. They’re the folks in a frenzy as retailors pack up the pumpkins and bring out the wreaths. And they probably overload on nogg as they “zone out” on all those winter holiday flicks that clog a couple of the basic cable TV channels. Ah, but what’s this at the multiplex, barely a week into November? Did one of those offerings slither out of its cage over at Hallmark? Perhaps, except this has a rather interesting list of talents. It’s got a story and script co-written by Oscar-winner Emma Thompson, and it’s directed by one of the current kings of raunchy comedies (this time minus his muse Melissa McCarthy), Paul Feig. What kind of tinsel and fluff stocking stuffer have these two diverse talents created? Well, it’s one that takes its title (and much...

A promotional video writ large, “On Broadway” feels like the kind of hotel programming a tourist might find playing on a loop at the Times Square Marriott Marquis.
Brought to the screen by film and theater director Oren Jacoby (“Constantine’s Sword”) and produced by Broadway insiders, this earnest but oddly superficial documentary zips through decades of artistic impact without taking enough time to create its own memorable impression.
All the elements are there, beginning with an ostentatiously celestial range of talking heads. Alec Baldwin, Helen Mirren, Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, John Lithgow, James Corden, Christine Baranski and others show up briefly, each delivering a pithy statement about how important The Theater is. Only a few — including Tommy Tune and George C. Wolfe — get a chance to say anything truly noteworthy or unexpected. For the most part, it seems we’re supposed to be impressed by their mere presence.

“Laughter is much more important than applause. Applause is almost a duty. Laughter is a reward.” — Carol Channing
If anyone has heard her share of both gaffaws and clapping, it would be Channing, who died on Tuesday 16 days shy of her 98th birthday. The Seattle native broke out on Broadway in 1949 in as Lorelei Lee, an irrepressible man-crazy gold-digger from Little Rock, Arkansas, in “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.” She performed the showstopper, “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend,” which would be memorably warbled in the 1953 film version by Marilyn Monroe and influenced Madonna‘s 1985 music video for “Material Girl.”
Her unique voice, willowy stature and bigger-than-life personality proved to be a plus but also a minus, since she always fused her traits into her characters. In a cover story for Life magazine, she was described as “an over-grown kewpie” who sang like “a moon-mad hillbilly.” Still, Channing had out-sized talent...

Peter Masterson, an actor, director, producer and writer best known for co-writing the Tony-winning play “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,” has died. He was 84.
Masterson, who suffered from Parkinson’s disease for 14 years, collapsed at his home in Kinderhook, New York, on Tuesday just before 6 p.m. and could not be revived, his daughter Mary Stuart Masterson told TheWrap.
“The best of me comes from the best of him,” Stuart Masterson told TheWrap. “He was an historian, a thinker, a tough son-of-a-gun (he never complained once about his plight with Parkinson’s), and kinder and funnier with a handful of words than it seemed possible. He was a world class sailor and raced in regatta around the world into his 70s.”

John Leguizamo
Leguizamo has been a regular fixture on Broadway since his first show on the Great White Way: “Freak” earned him Tony nominations for play and performance in 1998. He’s made a specialty out of autobiographically inspired, comic monologues that have touched on everything from his dysfunctional childhood in Queens (“Freak”) to the women who helped him on the road to maturity (“Sexaholix”) to how he forged a Hollywood career (“Ghetto Klown”). He was nominated this year as the creator of best play nominee “Latin History for Morons,” an overview of oft-overlooked Latin people who have played major roles in American history, all framed by the contemporary story of his fraught relationship with his own son.
