- In the last couple of years, I've gotten the money reviews and not the money. The critics are not quite as influential. So many films that have gotten extraordinary critical support haven't worked. They're challenging films. And people don't want to be challenged to the degree that they used to. If films are dark, depressing, nasty or searing -- what used to be recommendations -- now they are turnoffs.
- Subtitled films and home-viewing are not ideally suited to each other. The smaller the screen, the more problematic it is that you're looking at subtitles.
- Nobody's writing about [foreign language films], because nobody cares, and nobody cares because they don't penetrate the culture. It's a vicious cycle. [on why there are fewer and fewer foreign language films (Jan. 2006)]
- Box office doesn't mean a thing anymore, especially in terms of quality. If you did an analysis of the big sales at Sundance, you'd see a similar rate of failure.
- What better way to communicate our efficacy as a desirable home for these films than by landing an Oscar nomination for a low budget movie about a crack addict?
