Exclusive: Wheel Of Time execs Ted Field and Rick Selvage are among producers of feature biopic Les Indépendants about American impressionist Mary Cassatt and her relationship with French painter Edgar Degas.
French filmmaker Anaïs Tellenne (From the Big Fire Only the Embers Remain) has been attached to direct. Diah Wymont (costumer on Dick Tracy), inspired by the story of Cassatt forging her own path in the 19th century art world, makes her screenwriting debut after a long career as a costume designer.
The film will chart the story of Cassatt as a young woman with talent and an adventurous spirit striving to make it in Paris where she confronts chauvinism, elitism, art world misogyny, and the ravages of war. She falls in love with renowned artist Edgar Degas [in real life the artistic collaborators were not lovers] and their love and talent challenge the establishment as their fame grows. Ultimately, Cassatt must choose between Degas’ love and her own artistic path.

February 16 marked the fifth anniversary of Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole’s “Black Panther.” Marvel Studios’ first Black-led superhero flick, starring the late Chadwick Boseman as the king of Wakanda, was seen as a watershed moment for Hollywood representation. With all the chatter about Marvel and DC films prioritizing diversity and inclusivity as a step forward for the caped sub-genre, the success of “Black Panther” was less a step forward and more a return to what was once the status quo generations prior.
Comic book and/or superhero movies fronted by Black actors, like the “Blade” trilogy and “Men in Black” series, once kept comic book features alive, only for Hollywood to declare them essentially whites-only as “Spider-Man” turned the genre into A-level tentpole IP.
Will Smith in “Men in Black 3”
While Hollywood chased pulp-era nostalgia, smaller superhero films centered on Black heroes to relative success.

In an effort to keep the rights to Dick Tracy, Warren Beatty appeared in a recent TCM special in which he joins a Zoom chat with his famous detective character.
As Vulture points out, Beatty has to create content about Detective Dick Tracy every decade or so in order to hold onto the character. Comic fans who might not be familiar with the 1931 comic strip might still recognize the rights structure, since a similar deal allows Sony to create Spider-Man content, but only so long as they are continually producing new projects. Wait too long and the rights lapse, which is one reason why Spider-Man has been in a near-constant state of reboot since Sony first inked the agreement in 1999
“Dick Tracy Special: Tracy Zooms In” sees Beatty reprise the role, though this surreal iteration of the character is separate from the Tracy who appeared in the 1990 camp classic. On this Zoom call,...

Anyone who went into this weekend wondering if Dick Tracy knows how to use Zoom now has a definitive answer.
Late Friday night, Turner Classic Movies aired a mysterious new program called “Dick Tracy Special: Tracy Zooms In,” which features Warren Beatty reprising his role as the iconic detective from his 1990 film of the same name. Donning the character’s signature yellow coat and hat, Tracy participates in a Zoom call with TCM hosts Ben Mankiewicz and Leonard Maltin to give an update on his life and express his displeasure with Beatty’s film.
The three men watch several clips from the film together before they decide to call Beatty to settle Tracy’s complaints once and for all. Beatty then joins the call as himself, where he eventually reconciles with Tracy and they agree to have a more collaborative relationship in the event Beatty makes a sequel.

If you tuned into TCM on Friday, February 10, you might have been surprised to see Warren Beatty, 85, back in character as Dick Tracy, a comic-strip character he played in the 1990 film of the same name. Written and directed by Beatty and Chris Merrill, Dick Tracy Special: Tracy Zooms In also starred film critics Leonard Maltin and Ben Mankiewicz as they “interview famous detective Dick Tracy about his life and career” over video chat, according to TCM’s synopsis. As seen on YouTube, Beatty’s Tracy provided running commentary for scenes from the 1990 movie during the TCM special. But that commentary wasn’t exactly insightful. “This is good, this good, this is fine, and this is fine, too,” Beatty, in character, says around the 12:20 mark of the video above. “This is good, and nice, that’s good. That’s… no, no, no, no, no, I… no. Well, this is, well…...

Kids of the ’90s were fascinated with the movie Dick Tracy when it first came out. For one thing, they could get away with saying “Dick” because of the title. For another, here was a comic strip property that had the stylization of Tim Burton’s Batman that had previously hit, ultimately under the guise of a James Cagney-esque, noir-ish, gangsters vs. cops movie. Warren Beatty would star as the titular hero as well as direct it. And 33 years later, the legendary actor finally gives us a bizarre “sequel” to the movie, according to Polygon.
On Friday, TCM, a prestigious classic movie channel, aired what looked like something more akin to Adult Swim, with Beatty returning in character as Dick Tracys zoom calls with current TCM host Ben Mankiewicz and movie critic Leonard Maltin. Let me say that again — Dick Tracy zooms in an apparent sequel to the 1990 film.

Jean-Luc Picard is hardly a romantic.
If the Starfleet captain is not lecturing on the Prime Directive or arguing about questionable customs on other planets, he’s telling someone to beam down to a strange world or power up the warp drive. Even the way he requests his tea from the replicator sounds like a serious order. Who would know that someone who can be easily imagined giving orders in his sleep actually has the ability to feel—and is crushing on medical officer Beverly Crusher?
Picard and Crusher can go from approaching each other with the awkwardness of teens at prom to arguing like a couple married for ages. While they have been shipped countless times in fan fiction and were supposedly married and divorced in an alternate universe, what Trekkies were thirsting to see for seven seasons of Star Trek: the Next Generation kind of happened and kind of didn’t.

Warren Beatty’s 1990 Dick Tracy movie holds a special, nostalgic place in many a fan’s heart. Released the summer after Tim Burton’s Batman kicked off a new wave of Batmania, a level of pop cultural superhero obsession not seen since the original Batmania that followed the 1966 TV series, Dick Tracy was supposed to be the next big franchise giant, with its all-star cast, larger-than-life villains in grotesque, over-the-top makeup, and a production design meant to recall nothing less than the comic strips that first brought the world’s most famous (non-costumed) detective to life. Hell, it even answered Batman’s Prince soundtrack with one of its own by Madonna, not to mention original tunes by no less than Stephen Sondheim.
Anyway, despite a heady summer where at least some kids (whistles innocently) inexplicably found themselves buying action figures of weird looking gangsters in pinstripe suits (because what kid...

In the post-New Hollywood era, there are movie stars and there is Warren Beatty. The sturdily built, 6'2" dreamboat could've been a fine football player, but his movie-mad sister, Shirley MacLaine, got him fired up about acting. Beatty studied under Stella Adler, and arrived fully formed as a matinee idol opposite Natalie Wood in Elia Kazan's 1961 hit, "Splendor in the Grass." Beatty took not just to the craft, but the game. He produced and starred in Arthur Penn's "Bonnie and Clyde," which, by dint of his star power, drop-kicked studios into an era of blind risk-taking.
But there was nothing blind about investing in Beatty. "Easy Rider," "Five Easy Pieces," and even "The French Connection" were long shots. Place Beatty at the top of the marquee, and you had an event. The problem for studios was that Beatty had peculiar appetites. Ideally, you'd plug him into "Love Story" or "The Way We Were.
