Fly on the wall? Pah! The wall is all the way over there! These days, viewers want to be flies buzzing right around the noses of the people making the headlines, close enough to tell what they had for breakfast. And thanks to true story TV dramas, they can.
It’s been a long time since ropey Lifetime Movies were as good as it got for true story TV. In recent years, British production companies have stepped up in a big way to serve a growing appetite for fact-based drama, but all too often the real-life TV dramas of today focus on haunting tales of history’s most gruesome murders. If you’re sick of serial killers, there are plenty of non-murder true stories to enjoy in drama form, from very public scandals to ordinary people doing extraordinary things, to the kinds of tragedies it’s important that we never forget.

"Whatever's going on will be handled by the real agents." Ha. Apple TV+ has revealed an official trailer for their new original series Slow Horses, adapted from Mick Herron's bestselling book of the same name. This darkly funny espionage drama follows a team of British intelligence agents who serve in a dumping ground department of MI5, known as the Slough House, due to their career-ending mistakes. Led by their brilliant but irascible leader, the notorious Jackson Lamb, they navigate the espionage world's smoke and mirrors to defend England from sinister forces. There has to be more to it than just that! I thought it be much funnier, but instead this reminds me of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. The series ensemble cast includes Chris Reilly, Gary Oldman, Rosalind Eleazar, Olivia Cooke, Kristin Scott Thomas, Jonathan Pryce, Stephen Walters, Freddie Fox, Jack Lowden, Sam Hazeldine, Dustin Demri-Burns, Antonio Aakeel, and Christopher Chung.

The first volleys of the Battle of Culloden have yet to be fired, but that didn’t stop Outlander from dealing one of its main characters a bloody death in Saturday’s season finale.
Dougal MacKenzie, Jamie’s headstrong and bloodthirsty uncle, met his end when Fraser himself (with a little help from Claire) pushed a blade into his chest. Dougal’s death came after he’d walked in on the Frasers talking about poisoning Prince Charles, aka the only way they could think of stopping the carnage Claire knew would happen if the skirmish against the British took place.

The Musketeers delivers a heist episode in this week's To Play The King...
This review contains spoilers.
3.5 To Play The King
If we can but hope that last week’s The Queen’s Diamonds was this season at its lowest, then at least To Play The King shows some improvement, but unfortunately is still some way short of the quality of those opening few episodes and the series as a whole.
Written by Ellen Taylor (who is credited with many, many Coronation Street episodes as well as other British staples like Casualty), the story has a solid central plot and one I don’t think we’ve seen in The Musketeers before – a good, old fashioned heist. Except, it’s not just that. With unfortunate echoes of last week’s overstuffed mess, To Play The King treads a similar path and fills the hour to its absolute max,...

Claire (Caitriona Balfe) gets her wish to escape the confines of Castle Leoch on Saturday's episode of Outlander.
She sets out across the Highlands with Dougal (Graham McTavish), Jamie (Sam Heughan), and other men of Clan MacKenzie to collect payment for Colum (Gary Lewis).
While the men wrestle, Claire recites John Donne lakeside. She's joined by Ned Gowan (Bill Paterson), a lawyer and the man in charge of collecting rent for Colum. He too is a fan of Donne and the two bond over their love of the English poet.

It has been far too long since we’ve posted anything Outlander, so here’s a little something to make up for that lapse. Actually, a few little somethings: three gorgeous (it’s what Starz does, apparently, if Da Vinci’s Demons is any indication) screenshots, an interview with the two stars, and another “Speak Outlander” tutorial:

It’s announcement season in TV land! Also known as the Television Critics Association’s Winter Press Tour (the TCAs), during which networks bring producers and cast to talk about current and upcoming shows to a room full of TV critics.
For Starz, and happily for us, that meant the release of the first trailer and more for Outlander, executive produced by Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Helix) and based on the international best-selling books by Diana Gabaldon.
First, here’s a reminder of the synopsis:
The “Outlander” series spans the genres of romance, science fiction, history, and adventure in one grandiose tale. It follows the story of Claire Randall, a married combat nurse from 1945 who is mysteriously swept back in time to 1743, where she is immediately thrown into an unknown world where her life is threatened. When she is forced to marry Jamie Fraser, a chivalrous and romantic young Scottish warrior,...

Featurette: Outlander – Happy New Year from Outlander
Okay, okay, here’s what you Outlander-the-book-series fans are looking for. It’s the first pic of Claire and Jamie together, and it’s lovely:
In other Outlander news, Simon Callow has been cast as the Duke of Sandringham, and I’m hoping it’s a nice juicy part, he’s a wonderful actor. He’s been in many terrific projects over the years, but Doctor Who fans know him as Charles Dickens from “The Unquiet Dead”, an early Rose and Ninth Doctor episode,...

While we don’t yet have a premiere date for the upcoming Starz series based on Diana Gabaldon‘s Outlander, we do have a fun featurette with star Sam Heughan teaching us the correct pronunciation of a key Gaelic word: “sassenach”, meaning – hey! – “outlander”. We also have the latest production pictures for you to ogle and enjoy. Dig in:

Once the primary cast was set, the next thing that fans of Outlander have been waiting for from production was a look at one of those castmembers in costume, on set. That wish has been granted today by Starz as they have released our first look at Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser:
Starz also recently announced another member of the cast has been secured:
We are pleased to announce that Laoghaire MacKenzie, the young 16 year old beauty who is attracted to Jamie Fraser, will be played by Nell Hudson. Appearing to be shy and harmless at first, we eventually see her vengeful side when Laoghaire sets off a course of action that has far reaching consequences.
And here are the first production pics:
Absolutely gorgeous. And here’s another reminder of the synopsis:
Starz and Sony Pictures Television are partnering to create Outlander, an original series adapted from Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling books.

If you know and love the Outlander books, you know how important and “interesting” Geillis Duncan is to the 18th-century portion of the time travelling fantasy. If you’re new, suffice to say she is a prominent character, and is thought to be a witch. You’ll see. Today Starz announced that the part has gone to Lotte Verbeek, and wow does she look Scottish, even though she’s from the Netherlands.
Before we get to the details, however, we need to show you this. Production began last week on the Outlander, and to mark the occasion Starz released this photo of Outlander executive producer Ronald D. Moore (Helix, Battlestar Galactica), along with the quote, “Day One and the battle is joined. We fight to do justice to the material and the fans. We’ll return with our targes or on them.”
Syfy clearly missed an opportunity by not having Mr.

Starz has waited until September to announce the biggest casting news of all, for the female lead, and the main character of the show, accidental time traveler Claire Randall.
Here she is, Outlander mafia. Wow, does she ever look the part. The inclusion of plaid doesn’t hurt.

The Starz adaptation of the "Outlander" novels has found its Claire.
Irish actress Caitriona Balfe will play the part in the show, which comes from "Battlestar Galactica" executive producer Ron Moore and is based on Diana Gabaldon's novels. She joins a cast that includes Sam Heughan, Tobias Menzies, Graham McTavish, Gary Lewis, Duncan Lacroix, Annette Badland and Stephen Walters.
"The casting of Claire Randall was a long and difficult one because the role is so crucial to the success of our show," Moore says. "'Outlander' is told from Claire's point of view and we experience the entire story through her eyes, so it was vital that we find exactly the right actor to play her. "Caitriona wasn't on anyone's radar, she wasn't on any list, but when we saw her audition tape, we immediately knew she was someone special. Then, after we had her read with Sam,...

I just finished watching Splintered, a 2010 British horror flick that's recently received a spiffy DVD/Blu-ray combo pack release. Since it took up my whole morning, I want to do it justice. So let me see...what kind of movie is Splintered ?
Ah, I've got it. Splintered is a derivative, pedestrian thriller — but that's okay, because it's also tedious and predictable.
No, that's not quite right, but it's close. Let's dissect it to see if we can do a little better.
Full of tired ideas recycled from other better films, Splintered tells the tale of Sophie (Holly Weston), an eccentric coed who drags her friends deep into the Welsh woods in search of a local legendary creature that's either a werewolf or a fox. Since childhood, Sophie has...
