More than 2,000 figures from the UK’s arts and culture world have signed an open letter calling for the immediate cessation of Israel’s blockade and bombing of Gaza.
“We are witnessing a crime and a catastrophe. Israel has reduced much of Gaza to rubble, and cut off the supply of water, power, food and medicine to 2.3 million Palestinians,” reads the letter. “In the words of the Un’s undersecretary for humanitarian affairs, ‘the spectre of death’ is hanging over the territory.”
The signatories include acting stars Tilda Swinton, Charles Dance, Steve Coogan, Miriam Margolyes, Peter Mullan, Maxine Peake and Khalid Abdalla.
The Israeli action is in retaliation for a brutal terror attack out of Gaza by Hamas on October 7, which killed more than 1,400 people and resulted in the taking of 199 hostages.
More than 2,750 Palestinians are reported to have died in Israel’s subsequent bombing campaign, while electricity, food and...

Hex Wives is part of DC's Vertigo relaunch and it couldn't be coming at a better time. Aside from the fact that the first issue will be available on Halloween, witches in pop culture also seem to be at an all-time high with recent releases like The House with a Clock in Its Walls, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Hereditary, and Suspiria. I recently caught up with series creator and writer Ben Blacker to learn all about the origins of Hex Wives and where he plans to take the series:
Can you talk about your inspiration for Hex Wives and your pitch to Vertigo?
Ben Blacker: Hex Wives is the confluence of two ideas I'd been tinkering with in the back of my brain for years while my writing partner and I were working on a few other projects. Maybe five years ago, I caught an episode of “Bewitched” on TV.

The British Film Institute (BFI) is to launch a major project dedicated to Gothic cinema, which includes more than 150 films and around 1,000 screenings throughout the UK.
Running from August until January 2014, the Gothic project include the longest ever season at BFI’s Southbank venue in London, UK wide theatrical and DVD releases, an education programme, a new BFI Gothic book, a range of partnerships, special guests and commentators including project ambassador Sir Christopher Frayling.
Heather Stewart, creative director at the BFI, said: “Gothic has never been more potent or popular, reflecting the turbulent times we are living in, our deepest fears and hidden passions.
“The British discovered sex in vivid Technicolor through Gothic. With a new generation gripped by the post modern Gothic world of Twilight’s ‘vegetarian’ vampires, Harry Potter’s spells and El James’s 50 Shades, its meaning has mutated yet again. It’s now time to look back into the deep dark beating heart of...

This modest, immensely enjoyable documentary is about one of my favourite books, The Rings of Saturn by the German poet and critic Wg Sebald, who was born in 1944, taught for much of his adult life in this country, mainly at the University of East Anglia, and was killed in a motor accident in 2001. It was first published in German in 1995, translated into English three years later and is an account of a walking tour of Suffolk, the people he meets, the places he visits, and the historical and literary reflections prompted by what he sees and senses, taking his mind around the world. Suffolk becomes a sort of palimpsest for his eloquent, precise, lugubrious, often drily witty meditations about war, death, destruction and decay, about memories and continuities and the feeling that nothing entirely disappears.

Pablo Ferro is "more popularly known for his work as a master title sequence designer (Dr Strangelove and The Thomas Crown Affair among countless others) and occasionally an actor as well (Greaser's Palace)," writes Marcus Herring in an entry punctuated with clips and exclamations, "but Pablo also crafted a number of the most memorable trailers of all time…. The Cinefamily is devoting an entire evening to showcasing the genius of Pablo Ferro on Tuesday September 27th, with Pablo himself in attendance! He'll bring loads of unavailable commercials (Beachnut Gum!), rare 35mm trailers (the Japanese version of A Clockwork Orange!), lost animations, and of course, his famous title sequences. We'll finish everything off with an ultra-rare presentation of Pablo's 1969 short The Inflatable Doll, starring one of our favorite on-screen strangemen, Don Calfa!" More on Pablo Ferro from Holly Willis; plus, three sites dedicated to his work: 1, 2 and 3.

Is a Twilight-lite version of the fairytale with the girl in red really necessary?
The "little" has been removed from the title, and director Catherine Hardwicke has put a pubertal spin on the old folk tale, removing its teeth, pedantically spelling out the lite-psychological implications, and populating it with high-cheekboned hotties smouldering in the twilight. They all yearningly brood and pout, especially the wolf, who is frankly an incredible drama queen.
Once upon a time, a small girl in a red cloak scurried through the dark forest to deliver pastries to her worryingly lupine-looking grandma. Now the girl in question is Valerie, played by Amanda Seyfried, a totalicious babe, who lives in a quaintly imagined medieval European village, menaced by a werewolf that lives in the outlying forest. My ideal casting for Red Riding Hood would have been Justin Bieber, but there you go. She is in love with sexy...
