The ongoing talks between the WGA and the AMPTP continued to look promising through the weekend, but the writers couldn’t help but have fun with the studios’ claim that they made their “best and final offer.”
After the statement was made late Saturday before talks continued today, union members took to X to have a little fun with the AMPTP’s choice of words.
It inspired Mike Flanagan and a few others to come up with possible movie titles, should Hollywood ever decide to chronicle this hot mess of a negotiation. “Best Final Offer. 2 Best Final. Best Final Offer: 3D. Off4: The Best & The Final. Bfo 5: The Finalest Offer,” he wrote.
Eden Danger followed with a few of her own: “Offer Final Offer Best & Final Offer Last & Final Offer Smart & Final Offer Final Offer Tokyo Drift.” And so did George Samir Nader: “B&f: The Motion...

One picketer said it best: “The longer this strike goes, the more detailed these signs get.”
Judging by some of those Simpsons-themed placards, he’s not wrong. But there have also been lots of not-so-veiled references to some of the ongoing strike coverage. (Don’t recognize the reference to Carol Lombardini and The Cheesecake Factory? Read this story. Can’t remember the exact quote about putting people out of their homes? That notorious line originated here.)
Some of the signs also just show signs of fatigue. “I’m gonna be honest I’m running out of clever sign memes,” said one. “Cause, like, seriously?”
It’s now day 120 of the WGA strike and Day 47 of the SAG-AFTRA strike. Here’s what some picketers have to say these days about walking the line.

Fans of Jeopardy! know Mayim Bialik well. The actor and author, who’s now known for hosting the beloved game show, began permanent hosting duties alongside Ken Jennings in July 2022 after a long stint of guest hosting. Unfortunately, Bialik is stepping away from the show due to the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike. So, when will Bialik return? Here’s what we think.
When will Mayim Bialik return to ‘Jeopardy!’ for more filming? Mayim Bialik from ‘Jeopardy!’ | Tommaso Boddi/Getty Images for Los Angeles LGBT Center
Mayim Bialik officially stepped away from hosting Jeopardy! in May 2023 to stand in solidarity with the Writers Guild of America strike. The strike has union members from the guild demanding fair pay from Hollywood, and it’s the first writers’ walkout in 15 years. Several shows went dark immediately, like Saturday Night Live and other late-night talk shows. Production has also halted on fan-favorite series like Stranger Things and Yellowjackets.

Mayim Bialik made her stance known regarding the Writers Guild of America strike. She’s officially stepped down from her hosting duties on Jeopardy! Season 39. As for Ken Jennings, he’s stepped up and taken over the season’s final week of filming. Will Jennings leave his hosting duties temporarily to honor the strike, too? Here’s what we know.
Ken Jennings doesn’t appear to be leaving ‘Jeopardy!’ hosting duties due to the WGA strike Ken Jennings on ‘Jeopardy!’ |
So far, there’s no indication that Ken Jennings plans on putting Jeopardy! hosting duties on pause.
Mayim Bialik, who splits hosting duties with Jennings, stepped down to support the Writers Guild of America strike. The strike, which began in early May 2023, is in support of the writers earning fair wages from Hollywood studios. Several shows, like Saturday Night Live and late-night talk shows, were immediately affected. Others are experiencing struggles behind the scenes.

Carol Mendelsohn, the former showrunner of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, has signed a deal with Fox and is again attempting a series adaptation of Thomas Perry’s The Bomb Maker.
Mendelsohn has struck a first-look broadcast direct deal with the network. She was previously based at Universal Television, where she had an overall deal.
As part of the new multi-year agreement, Mendelsohn and her producing partner Julie Weitz are taking another swing at The Bomb Maker. It comes five years after Mendelsohn previously tried to adapt the book at Fox with Morris Chestnut in a starring role. At that stage, the project was set up with Sony Pictures Television, where Mendelsohn was under an overall deal.
This time around, Fox Entertainment Studios optioned the book and is meeting with potential writers.
It forms part of Fox’s latest broadcast direct deal, which see Mendelsohn and Weitz will develop scripted dramas for the network.

There isn't a 1980s blockbuster with a more devoted following than Richard Donner's "The Goonies." The exuberant adventure-comedy about a band of adolescent misfits who undertake a treasure hunt to save their due-to-be-demolished homes captivated late Gen Xers and early Millennials with its underdog spirit and sense of kid camaraderie. In light of its enduring popularity, there has long been talk of a sequel or a spinoff, or even a musical. These efforts proved futile until "The Bold Type" creator Sarah Watson sold Fox on a dramatic take inspired by the film's deep cultural imprint. Alas, this project seemed...

Four years after she was first elected to run the Producers Guild of America with Lucy Fisher, Gail Berman is ready to fully dig back into her day job. Like many in show business, she didn’t initially think she had the time to serve as guild president in 2018 — but was assured the role would only require an hour from her schedule per week.
“I can use the time that I’m doing the elliptical machine, I thought. Then Covid came,” Berman says. With only weeks before she and Fisher are termed out of their jobs this August, she takes pride that “we saw it through, and thankfully we’re on the other side and the organization is still standing. It’s in its best financial state ever.”

The Goonies-inspired drama that was previously set up at Fox has moved to Disney+.
The streamer is now redeveloping the project, which the broadcast network passed on in May.
Untitled Film Re-Enactment Project, which is now known as Our Time, comes from The Bold Type creator Sarah Watson and the Gail Berman-run SideCar, Steven Spielberg’s Amblin, and studio Warner Bros.
The original project, written by Watson, began after failing to make it in New York and carrying a heavy secret with her, Stella Cooper returns to her distressed automotive hometown to substitute teach. She finds inspiration, hope and ultimately salvation when she agrees to help three students who are pursuing their filmmaking dreams by putting on an impossibly ambitious shot-for-shot remake of one of the student’s favorite movies… The Goonies. “The Goonies’ never say die” is a memorable catchphrase from that fan favorite 1980s film. But it could also describe Warner Bros. TV’s recent strategic efforts to keep some of its series alive through crafty dealmaking.
And that, coincidentally, includes “The Goonies”-inspired “Untitled Film Re-Enactment Project” that had been adapted by writer Sarah Watson into a pilot for Fox. The drama, about a teacher who helps her students re-create, shot-for-shot, the original movie, eventually was passed on by Fox, which felt it skewed too young for the network. But Variety can exclusively report that the series, which now has the title “Our Time,” is being redeveloped at Disney Plus. The Donner Company and Amblin, which were behind the original, are back on board.
“Sarah worked nonstop to deliver this incredible script, we had our table read, and then the world shut down for Covid,” says Clancy Collins White,...

“The Bold Type,” which airs its fifth and final season premiere Wednesday night, might not have ever happened if it weren’t for Katy Perry. Former Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief Joanna Coles recalls the genesis of the series, inspired by her life at the top of the masthead, as stemming from a cover shoot with the pop singer years ago.
“It had gone really well. The one thing we asked her not to do was to Instagram anything from the shoot, because the pictures wouldn’t be out for another six weeks on the cover of Cosmo,” Coles recalls. “She promised she wouldn’t, and we all left feeling very high after the shoot. Within 20 minutes, she had posted the exact picture that we were going to use on the cover. I was beside myself. We couldn’t use the best picture because it had already been out there.”

The untitled “Goonies” reenactment pilot and “Blood Relative” are no longer moving ahead at Fox, Variety has learned.
The two projects were holdovers from Fox’s 2020 pilot season that were delayed in shooting due to the pandemic. The decision to ax “Blood Relative” comes as something of a surprise, given that it starred Oscar winner Melissa Leo in the lead role. The move also comes as Fox has given out two series orders from its drama pilot slate already: one for “The Cleaning Lady” starring Elodie Yung and another for the dance drama “The Big Leap.”

Fox has ordered a new animated comedy series set in mythical ancient Greece from “Rick and Morty” co-creator Dan Harmon, the broadcast network said Monday.
Set to premiere in 2022 as the first project under Harmon’s animation deal with the broadcast network, the untitled show is “centered on a flawed family of humans, gods and monsters that tries to run one of the world’s first cities without killing each other.”
Voice casting for the series is underway and names will be announced in the coming months.

A year and a half after then-newly independent network Fox Entertainment launched SideCar Content Accelerator with Gail Berman at the helm, Fox is dissolving the production company. Its slate, which includes 17 projects currently in development, will be folded into the network’s scripted programming department.
SideCar Chairperson Berman will return as full-time CEO of her own banner, The Jackal Group, which operated independently from SideCar. She will remain attached to future Fox projects that originated under SideCar as an executive producer.
The shutdown is believed to be a cost-cutting measure by Fox related to the current financial squeeze experienced by the Hollywood studios and networks amid the Covid-19-related production shutdown and the big contraction in the advertising market.
Fully owned by Fox Entertainment, SideCar was created as al content pipeline for the network, developing and producing/co-producing scripted and unscripted shows, primarily for Fox but also for other networks.

Editor’s Note: Don Winslow is the author of bestsellers including The Power of the Dog, The Winter of Frankie Machine, The Force and others. In a week in which William Morrow publishes his novella collection Broken, Winslow has agreed to write a week’s worth of original columns on his experiences in Hollywood. Today’s piece is for my money perhaps the best piece of writing I’ve read on Deadline, and it was worth agreeing to wear a New England Pats shirt for the whole week (hostage pic below). – Mf

Sparked by screenwriter Adele Lim’s recent decision to walk away from the “Crazy Rich Asians” sequel in protest of being paid less than her male co-writer, dozens of writers shared their own pay-inequity stories. Two of those writers spoke with Variety at length about their experiences.
Ashley Gable served as a co-executive producer and then executive producer on CBS’ “The Mentalist,” produced by Warner Bros. Television, for four years between 2008 and 2012. As her three-year contract neared an end, she was earning $25,000 per episode. Then she discovered that she was being paid about two-thirds of the $40,000 per episode that her male counterparts were making, each of whom had joined the show after her.
She negotiated up to $30,000 per episode, which she said the studio called “an outsized raise,...

Following last night’s dramatic conclusion to the ongoing standoff between the Writers Guild of America and Association of Talent Agents, a number of WGA members have officially fired their agents.
The Writers Guild left the negotiating table after extending its deadline with the Ata by six days last weekend, with the practice of agency packaging — which the WGA considers to be a conflict of interest that stagnates writers’ salaries — at the root of the conflict. The Ata agreement expired at midnight April 12, and is now replaced by a Code of Conduct that agents must abide by in order to represent WGA writers. The code forbids packaging, agents are not signing it, and that leaves the writers ending agency relationships.
Few WGA members seem happy that it’s come to this, but those speaking out on social media stand with the guild. In addition to Patton Oswalt, Megan Amram, and Jon Cryer,...

Exclusive: The ad industry is gearing up for a possible actors strike. Its chief negotiator is urging advertisers and ad agencies to finish all commercial shoots that employ union actors before the March 31 expiration of SAG-AFTRA’s current contract, lest they be caught in a work stoppage in the middle of production if upcoming negotiations fail to produce a new agreement.
The ad industry has made similar strike preparations in advance of negotiations in years past, but they appear more portentous this time around as the union ramps up its ongoing campaign to organize non-union commercials, and its members have been coming out in droves to support of those efforts. Negotiations are expected to begin early next year. The last time the union struck the ad industry was in 2000 — a walkout that lasted six months. “We are under a mutually agreed-upon news blackout and have no comment,” said a SAG-aftra spokesperson.

Four longtime SAG-aftra staffers – all women – have been promoted to executive director roles. Olga Rodriguez-Aguirre, Beth Millman, Jennifer Gaudy and Lori Hunt have all been given the new titles and will report to Ray Rodriguez, the union’s chief contract’s officer.
They join Rebecca Greenberg, recently hired as executive director of the guild’s music department, who reports to Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the union’s chief operating officer and general counsel.
“These new leadership roles will improve our capacity for strategic thinking and action around enforcement and negotiations,” Rodriguez said. “Along with other structural changes, these moves are designed to better facilitate coordination, improve our internal staff development and training, and recognize the growth and importance of several roles within the department.”
As part of the guild’s restructuring, its Theatrical Contracts and TV and New Media departments will merge into a single Entertainment Contracts Department, with Rodriguez-Aguirre and Millman serving as co-heads.

SAG-AFTRA is keeping up the pressure on the advertising agency Bartle Bogle Hegarty, calling one of its top officers “hypocrite of the week.”
The union, which is in the third month of a strike against Bbh, made the announcement Thursday about Bbh’s global chief strategy officer and New York chairman Sarah Watson.
“Watson helps steer Times Up Advertising and has publicly spoken out about fairness and social justice, but the agency she leads is illegally attempting to withdraw from its commitment to the professional talent that helped build their company,” SAG-aftra said. “No way, Sarah. Keep your word Bbh and honor your agreement.”
Bhh did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The union instructed its 160,000 members on Sept. 20 not to accept any work for Bbh, which had been signed to SAG-aftra’s commercials contracts since 1999. The strike came two weeks after Bbh publicly announced that...
