Apprehensions regarding the fate of Marvel Studios post Avengers: Endgame went away right after a cinema-defining experience brought over by Spider-Man: No Way Home. The third iteration of the Tom Holland-led trilogy climbed up box office ranks swiftly while also bringing the multiverse into full force. Moreover, the implications of the storyline directly tied into the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it gave rise to speculations regarding Avengers: Secret Wars.

In the world of comic book movies, there has never been a stranger relationship than the one between Jon Watts and Spider-Man. One of the most critically as well as commercially favored and strongest IPs of Marvel Comics, Spider-Man’s entry into the MCU was placed in the hands of a creator with the strangest IMDb credits under his directorial section.
Known for directing music videos, shorts, a claymation movie, and television series, Watts couldn’t have been placed at a more substantial position and with a more high-risk, high-reward IP than directing Spider-Man’s first debut under the Marvel banner after the controversial 12-year-long saga at Sony.

The Ecosystem Of Star Wars Characters From The Mandalorian And Ahsoka Could 'Expand In A Bigger Way'
This article contains spoilers for "The Mandalorian."The third season of "The Mandalorian" is here, and despite the season 2 finale's heartbreaking departure between Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Baby Grogu and the surprise appearance from Luke Skywalker, so far season 3 has been largely walking to its own beat of the drum. In fact, the first episode of season 3 almost feels like a complete reset of the show's status quo; our wandering space cowboy has been reunited with his child and they're ready to have more video game-esque sidequests.
If you're a casual "The Mandalorian" fan and were wondering what you missed along the way, the Jedi Academy plotline had actually already been resolved, but not in a special in-between episode. Instead, closure arrived in the form of a mid-season episode of "The Book of Boba Fett. While showrunner Jon Favreau has his own justifications for splitting this beat between the shows,...

Before Marvel Studios and director Jon Watts broke the collective minds of "Spider-Man" fans everywhere with "Spider-Man: No Way Home," the 2018 animated film "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" assembled a team of Spider-Men first. Although "Spider-Verse" was the first to mark its claim on the crossover of Spider-Men, "No Way Home" had the distinct honor of being the first live-action film to do so. Moreover, "No Way Home" arguably had a bit more emotional resonance behind it because of the three generations of "Spider-Man" the film celebrates, with its trio of Spider-Men from all the previous mainline films and their villains.
But even before Jon Watt's third film in his "Homecoming" trilogy, there had been speculation about whether Tom Holland's version of Peter Parker would have a cameo in "Into the Spider-Verse." Tom Holland himself had revealed that he was supposed to record an ever-so-brief cameo, as he would...

Back when Donald Glover (Han Solo) was first linked with a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, many believed the Emmy-winning director-writer-actor was all set to play Miles Morales, the fan-favorite character who goes on to assume the Spider-Man mantle in Marvel Comics. In fact, there was even an online petition kicking around at one point.
As seasoned comic book fans will tell you, Glover later voiced Morales in the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series, but it turns out Donald Glover’s ties to the fan-favorite Web-Head also extend onto the big screen. In the latest deleted scene released for Spider-Man: Homecoming, we see Glover’s petty crook, Aaron Davis, struggling to free himself from one of Spidey’s traps.
Granted, that sequence did make the cut in Jon Watt’s rebooted origin story, but up above you’ll catch an extended version in which Aaron Davis calls his nephew, who...

The MTV Movie Awards were held last night, and with them came the first clip from Spider-Man: Homecoming, featuring Tom Holland’s Peter Parker coming to grips with his secret identity being found out. I have to admit I wasn’t entirely sold on Holland’s Peter Parker from his brief appearance in Captain America: Civil War. His Spider-Man I was totally onboard with, but his portrayal of Spidey’s alter-ego din’t grab me right away. That’s not the case anymore. I love his nerdy charm and enthusiasm, and from this scene alone, he seems perfectly suited for the humour director Jon Watt’s is mixing in with the usual super heroics. Check it out below. “You’re the Spiderman!” Here’s your first look at a brand new @SpiderManMovie clip, exclusively from the #MTVAwards airing right now! pic.twitter.com/KAUYYlXz6E — MTV (@MTV) May 8, 2017 Released: July...

Following along from the three excellent new posters for Spider-Man Homecoming we have a new trailer for fans of the wall-crawler to pour over. It’s an important return to Marvel for Peter Parker and his genetically enhanced alter ego. The limited success of Sony’s Amazing Spider-Man reboot with Andrew Garfield was contrasted neatly with the web-head’s small turn in Captain America: Civil War. Tom Holland was a very likeable actor in the role, however this is the real test – his first solo movie under the Marvel umbrella.
Directed by Jon Watt, Spider-Man Homecoming takes us back to school with Parker and Stark following up on the promise in Civil War. Thankfully it doesn’t look like we’ll be seeing yet another radioactive spider bite, instead this is another type of origin story.

Despite claims to the contrary from back in March, Disney Channel veteran Zendaya apparently really is playing Mary Jane Watson in Spider-Man: Homecoming. That’s according to The Wrap, which claims to have gotten the information from “two individuals with knowledge of the project” who say that a recent draft of the Homecoming script involves Zendaya’s character—initially referred to as “Michelle”—offering “several clues to her identity as Mary Jane.” If this report is true, and if Homecoming is going to follow the traditional canon at all, then it means that Zendaya will be playing one of the most important supporting characters in Spider-Man’s history. That makes this a pretty big deal, since it could give us an idea of the direction that Sony and Marvel want to take director Jon Watt’s Tom Holland-starring Spider-Man reboot in.

Welcome to the Marvel movie lull, folks. We’re a bit out from Doctor Strange and it’s the summer, so there’s no television (if you’re into Agents of Shield). There are some things in production or gearing up for production, but there isn’t a ton of stuff out on the wire.
That doesn’t mean that there isn’t interesting stuff to talk about on the Spider-Man front, though! There’s been some casting news on Jon Watt’s Spider-Man: Homecoming and there was a crazy PS4 game teaser released at E3. Also, Wolverine 3 is starting to look like an X-23 story that has an Old Logan, not an Old Man Logan story that has X-23.
The most exciting casting first: It looks like Donald Glover is going to be joining Spider-Man: Homecoming! You have to admire the career path of the guy who was the subject of an internet campaign to be the lead in Amazing Spider-Man being able to keep the momentum going to the point where he has voiced Miles Morales, the black/latin Spider-Man for Disney Xd and now he is going to be in Homecoming!
The thing is we don’t know who he is playing yet, so here we sit in the pool of wild speculation. Over on the deep end of this pool is Miles Morales. It does not make sense for Sony to add Miles Morales to the Spider-Man universe and it does not make sense for Miles to be older than Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This is still the same story world that the Avengers exist in, I don’t think throwing in another Spider-Man this soon after the first one makes sense and I don’t think that’s how we want Miles Morales adapted to the screen when he gets there. I still like the rumor that Sony has an animated Spider-Man movie with Miles at the forefront and that one seems much more likely.
To recap: Donald Glover, not playing Miles Morales.
Everyone else, though, is up for grabs. I’ve been reading a lot of speculation online about who Glover could be playing and there are some options I like more than others. Instead of jumping to my wildest idea, I’ll start with the most likely one: Donald Glover is a teacher at Peter’s school. From the little that we do know about Homecoming, it’s going to lean into having such a young Spider-Man and give him the teenage drama that most of his other adaptations have only given occasional glimpses into. Instead of Tobey Maguire’s Parker trying to deliver pizzas, Tom Holland’s Peter will have High School problems.
Now, let’s say Glover is a teacher. That leaves us with two choices if he plays a large part in the film: the teacher is stupid and used for comic relief or the teacher is smart and realizes Peter is special. If it’s the second one, Glover is probably playing a villain. Peter Parker got an equipment upgrade from Tony Stark, so he doesn’t need a secret High School Q or anything. If the teacher is smart and notices Peter, this is where we get to toss in adaptation characters that could fit that adaptation choice: the Prowler, the Tinkerer, Doctor Octopus, The Chameleon, Mysterio, etc.
If Glover’s not a teacher, I want him to be at Peter’s job. If there’s a new J. Jonah Jameson that embodies both the hot-headed nature of the previous film’s version with Ultimate Spider-Man’s Jameson (the one from the Bendis comics), I’d want to see that Donald Glover character.
The other addition to the Homecoming cast is Kenneth Choi, who was in Captain America: The First Avenger as Jim Morita. We know he’s going to be playing the principal of Peter’s Queens high school. Needing a principal for the movie is about all we can glean from that. There’s a few cool ways that could play out, but he’s probably just the authority figure. And, if this movie really does have a Homecoming dance like I not-so-secretly hope it does, he’ll get to put his hands on his hips and look sternly at people who are dancing inappropriately.
Also in the world of Spider-Man, E3 is happening, which means the internet is flooded with gaming news I vaguely understand (wake me up when you have your “Project” done, Microsoft, and there’s a single bundle of Vr peripheries I can buy in one go, Sony). One thing that did make me sit up and take notice was the trailer for this Spider-Man game from Marvel Entertainment and Insomniac Games:
I’m not sure what this game is, but I can tell you I do not like this trailer. It feels like it was directed by someone who doesn’t know how to shoot Spider-Man. Most of the action moments are too close to Spidey and are traditionally animated: as in not gameplay.
There looks like there might be some hints at what the gameplay is going to look like from a few shots - particularly when Spidey uses his webs to throw a metal box at some guys on a roof or when he’s parkour-ing through an office building. Both of those moments feel small. The bigger moments in the trailer, like the train fight and the instances of Spider-Man jumping in the air are all shot in ways where they feel small. Something’s wrong with the physics in this trailer, but not wrong enough that I can tell you what it is.
Certainly the webbing bothers me:
Like, shouldn't this web be taught for at least a few frames? For physics? pic.twitter.com/61bCj5ZNfe
— Da7e Gonzales (@Da7e) June 14, 2016
However, this is all just to get us hype for the new PS4 Spider-Man game that will have a completely original story (not one tied into the movies). It doesn't even have a title they want to reveal yet. So What: his costume sucks and he’s only fighting street-level villains in a trailer I can only describe as “What if Arkham City was played in perpetual twilight?”, this is not the final game.
I want to see some gameplay footage. That trailer did not do enough for me.
Finally this week, X-Men: Origins Wolverine 3 (not the actual title) is shooting in New Orleans where set photos captured scenes from the exterior of a casino set. Hugh Jackman is there sporting a beard as is Patrick Stewart (the title Wolverine: Beards would be good, but totally has a double meaning) who is back in a wheelchair as Professor Xavier.
Just Jared, who released the photos, noted that one scene had Wolverine pull up in a bullet-riddled limo, another had Wolverine, Patrick Stewart and Mystery Girl getting into a van and -
Right, I skipped the girl. The Hashtag Show found what they think is a breakdown for a character codenamed “Zoe” for Wolverine 3:
Code Name: Zoe
12-to-15 year-old girl
A pound puppy, raised in captivity in a time of battle, without support systems of a normal childhood.
She has no family and until now, has never left the compound in which she was born.
She has an authentic intensity - Her expressions & body language speak volumes, without words.
Once released in the outside world, everything is new, every experience and every image a first.
This does not mean everything is wonderful or wondrous. Some thing she sees (things we might regard as conventional) may scare her or anger her and things we may find interesting may bore her.
She has not been instructed in many social conventions - she can eat like an animal. She studies and often mimics people's behavior.
She has a high Iq, but is also a temperamental, impulsive and feral creature that can raise genuine mayhem.
She is a girl that has never been kissed. Looking for a real girl - not made up or done up. Also with genuine edge, not made up or put on.
Martial arts or gymnastics experience preferred but not necessary - but actress must be extremely physical and able to improvise scenes without necessarily resorting to speech. Do not play it "cute."
Sounds like a young X-23, doesn’t it?
Like a day after that rumor broke is when Mystery Girl started popping up in set photos. She was in that “fleeing to the van” scene and here she is in another scene entirely where it looks like she’s been shot but is strolling confidently along the street?
Great time to reiterate that no one has said anything about what the plot of this movie actually is. Finding and protecting Mystery Girl through a few different time periods could be cool, but that’s how it would have to go. That girl is a smidge too young to stride into the Female Wolverine role...right?

Like a day after that rumor broke is when Mystery Girl started popping up in set photos. She was in that “fleeing to the van” scene and here she is in another scene entirely where it looks like she’s been shot but is strolling confidently along the street?
Great time to reiterate that no one has said anything about what the plot of this movie actually is. Finding and protecting Mystery Girl through a few different time periods could be cool, but that’s how it would have to go. That girl is a smidge too young to stride into the Female Wolverine role...right?

Bryan Singer released a little behind the scenes video from Hugh Jackman filming the Weapon X sequence in X-Men: Apocalypse. If you notice, they had actually cut together rough footage or an previz for what they were shooting: the sound effects for the shot are Already in the monitor for playback. Just one of those cool filmmaking things.

While many of us have all likely experience a pretty heavy dose of Spider-Man fatigue, the character's recent appearance in Captain America: Civil War did much to get this writer excited about his upcoming standalone film, Spider-man: Homecoming.
So far we know that Tom Holland will be reprising the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man along with Marisa Tomei as Aunt May. In addition, they will be joined by Zendaya, Tony Revolori, and of course, Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark.
But what else can we expect from the Jon Watt's-directed flick? Joblo has the scoop that potentially reveals Spidey's big costume change, as well as villains involved.
If you don't wish to be spoiled, now is the time to stop reading.
Spoiler Alert!

In a move that will surprise no one after they see Captain America: Civil War, Robert Downey Jr. has evidently closed his deal to make an appearance in Spider-Man: Homecoming. I hope he spends his entire time onscreen hitting on Aunt May. Right now, casting is underway for all the roles in Sony’s new Spider-Man film, and it’s been interesting so far. They’re definitely not trying to fill every role with a giant movie star when they’re making announcements about Zendaya, Tony Revolori, and Laura Harrier. Hopefully, what they’re doing is finding the right people, regardless of how well known they are. In Civil War, it is Tony Stark who first reaches out to Peter Parker to bring him into the larger world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so it makes perfect sense that Tony would make an appearance in the first solo film for this incarnation of the character.

Early last week, Marvel and Sony let the cat slip out of the bag when it was rumored Jon Watt’s standalone Spidey movie would be titled Homecoming and sure enough, both parties have now officially announced that Spider-Man: Homecoming will scurry into theaters on July 7, 2017.
Word comes by way of the ongoing CinemaCon event in Las Vegas, where Sony Pictures chair Tom Rothman nailed down the reboot’s title. A leaked domain name may have spoiled the surprise, but Rothman did tease that the subtitle alludes to Peter Parker’s journey and how he “is trying to find his way home.”

But perhaps most exciting of all is how Spider-Man: Homecoming will be introducing Tom Holland to the fray. Aside from a last-minute cameo in a recent trailer for Captain America: Civil War – Underoos! – we haven’t really seen Holland’s much younger rendition of Spidey in action.

Coppola announced the joint prize in a speech during the closing ceremony: “This year’s jury prize is for cinema itself,” said the director, adding that the decision was made by the “majority vote of the jury”.

Read More: The 12 Major Breakouts of the 2015 Sundance Film Festival Last Sunday, Jon Watt's film "Cop Car" at Hollywood Forever Cemetery kicked off Sundance Next Fest in Los Angeles. The festivities continue this weekend with a fantastic film and music lineup at The Theatre at Ace Hotel August 7, 8 and 9. As a programmer for the festival, I have spent a lot of time thinking about what goes into creating a dynamic program so I put together a few tracks that inspire my Sundance Next Fest experience. But first, here is a little background on why we created this festival. Three years ago, it started out as an experiment to provide a singular festival experience exciting enough to draw new viewers to independent film and to showcase the renegade spirit of independent artists. The name was derived from the Next category at the Sundance Film Festival, which showcases stylistically adventurous and bold films.

Exclusive: Jon Watt’s thriller was co-written with Christopher Ford.
Memento Film International (Mfi) has acquired international rights to Jon Watt’s thriller Cop Car, starring Kevin Bacon as a police officer.
The film follows a pair of ten-year olds who go for a joyride in an abandoned car only to find the owner has left something of great value behind.
The car belongs, in fact, to a small-time cop, played by Bacon, who is desperate to get it back. A fast-paced game of cat-and-mouse ensues.
“We fell in love with Cop Car as quickly as our two rabble rousing young heroes try to get the hell away from Kevin Bacon’s character,” said Mfi managing director Emilie Georges, international.
