O,Brazen Age was one of my favourite discoveries at Viff 2015 (and one of the best Canadian films of the year), so it was a pleasure to sit down and talk with its writer/director, Alexander Carson, about his approach to filmmaking, literature, the role of indie filmmaking, his postmodern approach to art in his debut feature.
This is your debut feature, although you have made shorts and worked as a producer on your films as part of the North Country Cinema. How was the transition from shorts to features, and how much of it is a shared vision, not just your own, since you were working as part of a collective?
The transition from shorts to features, for me, was not so challenging because I decided that I didn’t want to do anything differently than on my short films. It’s a longer format, but I didn’t want to get overwhelmed.

I’m still waiting for Eli Roth to make a good movie. But for the first thirty or forty minutes of Knock Knock, I thought maybe this was the one. It starts off well, with a camera gliding over the Hollywood hills and locating the well-appointed, sheltered home of forty-something architect Evan Webber (Keanu Reeves) and his artist wife Karen (Ignacia Allamand). Then Roth’s camera glides through the corridors of the house, making sure to linger on the family photos adorning the walls. It’s an image the film returns to over and over again in its first half, and one can’t help but dread what might be lurking at the end of those spaces. If only the movie were all anticipation.Set over the course of a day, the story begins with Evan and Karen and their two young children in seeming familial bliss. It’s Father’s Day,...

It’s been a super busy year for filmmaker Eli Roth. First, he gave us the long awaited cannibal horror flick, The Green Inferno. Now, he’s following that up with Knock Knock, an unnerving thriller starring Keanu Reeves that sees the actor playing Evan Webber, a devoted husband and father who is left home alone for the weekend while his wife and kids go on vacation.
While busy working on a project one night, two young women (played by Lorenza Izzo and Ana de Armas) knock on his door and ask for his help, saying that they’re lost and can’t find their way to a party. Evan agrees to help them out, but his kind gesture soon has him descending into a living hell, as the ladies proceed to play merciless psychosexual games that could cost him a lot more than his life.

In Eli Roth’s upcoming thriller Knock Knock, Lorenza Izzo and Ana de Armas play a pair of lost young women who arrive at the home of Evan Webber (Keanu Reeves) looking for assistance before taking things to an entirely new level by seducing the affable husband and father. The next morning, Evan does his best to get his guests to leave, but the ladies have other plans—deadly plans—and the duo decide Reeves’ character (and his family) must pay for his indiscretions.
At the recent press day, Daily Dead chatted with both Izzo and de Armas about their experiences working together in Knock Knock as well as with their fellow co-star, Reeves. The duo also talked about the visual style of the film, how their characters manifested themselves throughout the various outfits they wore, and how their characters are very much the antagonists here, but also the victims as well.

In Eli Roth’s latest film, Knock Knock, Keanu Reeves portrays Evan Webber, a loving husband and father who makes a fatal mistake one weekend while left home alone to his own devices. Two young women (Lorenza Izzo and Ana de Armas) show up one night, lost and looking for help, and Evan comes to their rescue. Thinking their meeting is just an innocent coincidence, he soon makes the mistake of succumbing to temptation and when he tries to get his visitors to leave the next day, both ladies take exception to Evan’s rudeness and enact their own twisted revenge on him.

There’s a popular saying that goes, “Nice guys finish last,” and that’s certainly the case for Keanu Reeves’ character in Eli Roth’s latest thriller, Knock Knock, which finds the veteran actor fighting off a pair of crazed women after a sultry night of fun that comes at a hefty price. Unlike most of his previous films, Roth subtly goes for the jugular with Knock Knock, building to a finale brimming with surreal tension and a wickedly dark sense of humor that left me both cringing and laughing.
In his first "Dad Role," Reeves stars in Knock Knock as Evan Webber, a likable and mostly happy husband and father who has been left home alone for the weekend to wrap up a looming architect project for work. While We’re Young: Roth’s Revisits Grindhouse Home Invasion
Genre director Eli Roth presents his first remake, Knock Knock, a rehash of a 1977 grindhouse thriller, Death Game (which starred Colleen Camp and Sondra Locke, both returning as producers), utilizing modern technology for this revamped mixture of home invasion nightmare and portrait of masculine anxiety. Entertaining as a bit of unintentional camp, Roth’s inability to reign in over-the-top antics from his wildly uneven cast members doffs its queasy sexual overtones nearly as soon as they begin to develop. Headliner Keanu Reeves, along with Roth’s own wife Lorenza Izzo, tend to run amok in a screenplay co-written by the director’s clutch of Chilean acolytes Nicolas Lopez and Guillermo Amodeo. Salty, overly exuberant bits of dialogue only solidify the film’s aptitude for off-putting ludicrousness, but for those inclined towards grungy, misanthropic portraits of cruel psychological games, it’s not a complete loss.

Eli Roth is grabbing headlines and making crimson waves this week following the release of his unsettling, visceral and long-delayed cannibal film The Green Inferno – catch Matt Donato’s thoughts on the gruesome spectacle here – though the director also has another project that is teetering on the verge of its limited release, the Keanu Reeves-led home invasion thriller, Knock Knock.

Keanu Reeves is held up as one of the nicest actors in Hollywood – and that makes him the perfect fit for Eli Roth’s new domestic horror, Knock Knock.
Stepping into the fuzzy slippers of a loving father and husband, Reeves is on board to play Evan Webber, a devoted architect who stays at home one weekend to focus on his craft while his family enjoy a brief holiday without him. One night, though, Evan’s life is effectively upended when two impossibly attractive young women seek shelter in his home. Lost and without a phone signal, Reeves’ protagonist allows them into his family home, leading to a passionate affair and a series of consequences that cement Genesis (Lorenza Izzo) and Bel’s (Ana de Armas) status as bona fide femme fatales.

Eli Roth’s new movie, Knock Knock, is a home invasion thriller that finds Keanu Reeves as Evan Webber, a man who would seem to have life all worked out. He’s married to a wonderful woman, has two great kids, loves his job and even designed his own house. And as you can probably tell from this new poster, freshly landed with us from the man who directed it, things will be staying that way for precisely no time at all. When Webber answers the door to two young women, played by Lorenza Izzo and Ana de Armas, things take dark turn. From there, his world turns into a twisted nightmare as events turn weird. The two sirens seduce and then begin a series of torments that will find him desperately trying to fight back. We’re promised more psychological terror than gore on this one, and the teaser leaves enough to the imagination.

We have a new trailer for Eli Roth’s new horror movie, Knock Knock. For a guy who made “torture porn” famous a decade ago with Hostel, his latest seems like an enjoyable thriller worth watching.
The film stars Keanu Reeves as a family man whose life gets all twisted when he lets two pretty women (Lorenza Izzo and Ana De Armas) into his home one night. They seemed to be in distress but as you see in the trailer, they are out to play a twisted game instead.
Here’s the Sundance synopsis:
Evan Webber (Keanu Reeves) is living the dream. Just look at his beautiful, successful wife, his two wonderful kids, and his truly stunning house—which he designed himself. Of course he did. Things are going so well, Evan doesn’t even mind spending Father’s Day alone while the rest of his family heads out for a beach weekend.

"You've been a very bad boy, Evan!" Voltage Pictures has debuted a full-length trailer for Eli Roth's latest film Knock Knock, a wacky home invasion thriller starring Keanu Reeves. He plays the victim, though, and the invaders this time are two feisty, nasty girls - played by Lorenza Izzo and Ana de Armas. This first premiered at Sundance this January in the Midnight category, but didn't up with any crazy buzz (nor did we have the chance to see it there). The setup is fairly interesting, but it almost turns into Funny Games half way through and doesn't seem to go anywhere else. But I'll watch pretty much anything Keanu stars in. I can think of worse ways to go. Still, Keanu Reeves looks none-too-happy about being put through the wringer by two sexy, psychopathic intruders in the latest trailer for Eli Roth’s home invasion horror Knock Knock.
Reeves plays a family man who gives into his carnal impulses when two beautiful women (Lorenzo Izzo and Ana de Armas) turn up on his doorstep, claiming to be stranded during a storm, then seduce him. When he awakens in bed with them the next morning, though, the poor guy realizes that his impromptu fling isn’t just going to disappear, as the two lovely (and possibly lethal) ladies proceed to torture him psychologically, sexually and physically.
Roth has brought us some of the more twisted horror flicks in recent years, from Cabin Fever to Hostel, but he’s been on a downward trend in recent years thanks to the middling Green Inferno.

Park City - Sundance saw the debut of not one but two films that both fit the broad definition of a "horror film," each with decidedly strong ideas about gender politics, but only one of the two seems to me to be genuinely worthwhile. Eli Roth has become defined largely by the excesses of his films, and I'm sure that's perfectly fine with him. Like many life-long gorehounds, when finally given a chance to make his own films, he happily ladled on buckets of blood. What I found interesting about Eli's films is how he seemed to be working one theme repeatedly, constantly exploring the fear that people have of the unknown in the world around them. "Cabin Fever," "Hostel," "Hostel II," and "The Green Inferno" all feature characters leaving their homes, the places where they are comfortable, and heading out to some corner of the world where they are...

First thing you need to know before I begin is that I have a soft spot for Keanu Reeves. I know he's not the greatest actor in the world, but over the years I've enjoyed his films, and I'm a fan. Unfortunately, director Eli Roth's latest torture thriller isn't one of his best. I didn't like this movie at all, and I don't know how or why it was made. I personally believe that this is the most embarrassing movie that Reeves has starred in, and it makes me sad. Apparently the actor jumped at the opportunity to star in it, though. I'm not sure why, unless he thought it would be a fun filmmaking experience, and maybe it was fun! The thing is, a movie can be bad even if it was fun to make.

While Eli Roth's The Green Inferno seems to have been delayed indefinitely, he hasn't stopped making films and it would appear his latest, Knock Knock, is going for more of a thriller route than the dull, gory trappings his films had fallen into as of late. Starring Keanu Reeves as Evan Webber, a happily married family man whose world gets turned upside down as two young women (Lorenza Izzo and Ana de Armas) knock on his door one rainy night while Evan is home alone. As the official synopsis tells us, "Things get weird, and then dark, and then much, much, much darker. But this is no splatter film, so Roth keeps the horror nice and psychological as Evan's life--and house--get ripped apart, piece by beautiful piece." Knock Knock premiered last night at the Sundance Film Festival as a midnight selection, check out the trailer and some additional pictures from the movie below.

Is Keanu Reeves becoming the face of sharp, smart genre fare? Let's hope so. Last fall, he starred in the underrated popcorn-bag-full-of-fun, "John Wick," one of the most satisfying action movies of 2014. And now he's headed to Sundance, leading Eli Roth's midnight movie "Knock Knock," and the first teaser promises something playfully wicked. Costarring Lorenza Izzo, Ana De Armas, Aaron Burns, Ignacia Allamand and Colleen Camp, the film centers on a very successful man with a loving wife and family, whose life is turned upside down when he embarks on a dalliance with two beautiful women. Here's the official synopsis: Evan Webber (Keanu Reeves) is living the dream. Just look at his beautiful, successful wife, his two wonderful kids, and his truly stunning house—which he designed himself. Of course he did. Things are going so well, Evan doesn't even mind spending Father's Day alone while the rest of...
