We're starting to think Jack White doesn't fully grasp the internet. It's not that he doesn't know how to use it to communicate with fans, bring them high-end streaming music with Tidal, sell albums and tickets through various outlets, etc. It's just that things like Third Man Records' lengthy rant against it, "Jack White Click Bait Bingo Exhaustion," seems to show a lack of understanding that when a famous person says something interesting or borderline controversial, fans are going to react and writers are going to post about it, sometimes fairly and sometimes not. His high standards for internet discourse and journalism are admirable, but still unrealistic. And call us skeptical, but with Jack's penchant for toying with people pretty evident at this point, we have to wonder how often he loves steering into the skid and saying something sarcastic or, at least, scowling his way through a Cubs game...

The 2007 MTV Video Music Awards was one of the boldest and most unusual broadcasts in the show's history. Rather than just be confined to a single theater, arena or studio, the 2007 VMAs took over the entirety of the Palms Casino and Resort in Las Vegas. Awards were handed out in one area, while performances were going on in suites, penthouses and at the pool. The show was thrilling in its chaos, because not only did you now know what was going to happen next, but you also didn't know where it was going to happen.
At the center of all this madness was producer and rock icon Mark Ronson, who was brought in to be in charge of the house band for the duration of the show (much in the same way that Jack White did the year before in New York and the way Deadmau5 will do this Sunday). On that night,...

Female director of a new film about pioneering all-girl rockers the Runaways, starring Kirsten Stewart and Dakota Fanning
Who is she?
A music video director who has worked with Muse (Supermassive Black Hole), Marilyn Manson (Tourniquet) and the White Stripes (Blue Orchid). Now she's made a film about the Runaways (out on 10 September), starring Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning.
The Runaways. Who they?
A band. You know: pioneering all-girl rockers, role models for riot grrrls. When the Runaways formed in the mid-70s, women were only considered fit for playing folk music on acoustic guitars.
Hold on, isn't Dakota Fanning about 12 years old? Bit young for riot grrrling?
Sixteen actually. She was 15 when they started filming, the same age as Cherie Currie, the character she plays, when she joined the band. Stewart, looking like Keith Richards, is Joan Jett. Then there's their svengali manager (Michael Shannon), who's not totally signed up to the empowerment message.

Contemporary Art 1945-Present
Detroit Institute of Arts
Through September
Detroit is rightly credited as the breeding ground for great music. Iggy and The Stooges, Eminem, Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes, and Jack White have all captured the sound of the exquisite decay of metal, the beauty of rust which is Detroit. Less acknowledged are the artists who have sprung from, or continue to work in, the Rust Belt Capital, giving us a sense of the visual poetry found in the ruins. The newly retooled Detroit Institute of Arts has at last given us a glimpse of some of the works of these artists in a section of their current exhibition Contemporary Art: 1945-Present. A wonderful show of their permanent holdings (much the same as New York MoMA's similarly themed current exhibition), it gives us the opportunity to peruse the best-of-the-best of the collection.

Footage featuring Jonas Brothers singing at a special concert dubbed "Paul McCartney: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song in Performance at the White House" which was taped last month has hit the web. Wearing suit, the three brothers performed The Beatles' "Drive My Car".
Before taking the stage, Kevin Jonas said they have broken their rule by accepting the offer to cover The Beatles. The oldest member of the band admitted that in their early career, they promised not to play any song from the legendary group because they thought they would never do a good enough job.
Spotted among the attendees were President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle as well as their daughters Sasha and Malia who put on huge smile when the Jonas boys came onto the stage. All people seemed to have good time. McCartney and Stevie Wonder were seen singing along from the audience seat.

John Mayer. By Hannah Johnston/Getty Images. How much for a private island? Which M.B.A. program has the richest grads? Who sleeps where on Air Force One? When readers ask Vf.com questions, our experts are there to answer. For good old-fashioned guitar shredding that's loud enough to take the roof off Radio City Music Hall, look no further than Jim James of My Morning Jacket, who is faster on the frets than Neil Young but just as soulful in his approach. On the lighter side, Sweden's José González picks complex acoustic patterns while singing smart lyrics that make Mayer sound like 'NSync's bluesy third cousin. But of all the guitar gods busting eardrums out there, Jack White has the true Midas touch, whether he's playing with the White Stripes or the Raconteurs.

I’m back! For those wondering (all twelve of you) where this column had disappeared to, the answer is a sad and lonely one. I didn’t receive any friend requests!
It’s true, this column is dependent on bands spamming me and for two months… no one bothered. I was tempted to review some bands I was already friends with but that would have been cheating (and it would have resulted in one of these being 100% positive and I couldn’t do that to you). So I had to play the waiting game. And now, just like buses and a group of men in a porno, they’ve all come at once.
I actually got 8 requests in the space of two weeks so now I have to try and catch up with myself. It’s a mad, mad world.

Washington (AP) — The Jonas Brothers, Faith Hill, Stevie Wonder and Jerry Seinfeld are among an all-star lineup that will honor Paul McCartney next month at the White House. Hollywoodnews.com: Paul McCartney’s long and winding road apparently will be bringing him to the White House.
The former Beatle has agreed to perform in a concert being held in his honor next week when he appears in Washington to accept an award from President Barrack Obama. McCartney, according to the BBC, will receive the third annual Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, then join the likes of Dave Grohl and Stevie Wonder in the East Room for a musical gig.
Paul Simon won the inaugural prize. Wonder won it last year, so McCartney is in great company.
The concert eventually will be televised on July 28, when audiences will be able to see McCartney, Wonder, Faith Hill, Elvis Costello, The Jonas Brothers, White Stripes singer Jack White and Jerry Seinfeld — all scheduled to perform.

Rock auteurs go for the jugular Alison Mosshart, Jack White, Dean Fertita and Jack Lawrence—of the Kills, the White Stripes, Queens of the Stone Age, and the Raconteurs, respectively—have something in common beyond a love of vintage rock and pluralized band names: They all approach music with equal measures of recklessness and craft. Their sophomore album (following up last year’s Horehound) cranks the mojo up to 11, splitting time between inferno-grade blues-rock and grooves so swampy they practically emit wavy stink lines. Guitars go terse, then molten, while Fertita bends space with his tough, spacey organ vamps; White sings lead...

This year, the further out east you go, the more eye pollution there seems to be. The change of musical seasons is upon us. The Big Music Machine is pushing out albums that will make you want to run away with a rock band for the summer. Keane is back with more of their dream-pop piano anthems. Jack White and the Dead Weather return with more of their "Clockwork Orange," apocalyptic, Delta blues mash-ups. The National make the darkness danceable. Jackson Browne unplugs with David Lindley, Spanish style. And Meat Loaf gets a mainstream summer makeover. It's time to play. Unless you skip. Vote: Jack White: Risk-taking musical genius or self-obsessed musical ideologue? [Poll] Play: The Hold Steady, "Heaven Is Whenever" First a bit of housekeeping. Much to my embarrassment, the Hold Steady's May 4 release was skipped from last week's Play > Skip. Please, play, play, play. Songwriter and lead singer Craig Finn is keeping the...

Then you have the usual crap that junks up the front of the Carlton hotel and this year's batch seem to be destined to flop. This year The A-Team takes up a lot of room on the green grass, so does Robin Hood and I'm betting that Rob Letterman Gulliver's Travels featuring Jack White...

Jack White has revealed that he channelled Lady GaGa when recording a new song with his band The Dead Weather. Discussing the new track, called 'The Difference Between Us', White admitted that he enjoyed acting like GaGa and also praised bandmate Alison Mosshart for her live performances. WENN reports him as saying: "Lady GaGa - I was thinking of the type of song a contemporary musician would write so I started thinking about her. I started thinking of how she would write the music to this song and got quite into being Lady GaGa in an odd way. "The (more)...

Jack White had an unusual muse for new The Dead Weather track "The Difference Between Us" - the song was inspired by Lady GaGa. The rocker decided to channel the "Poker Face" sensation while composing the tune - and admits he enjoyed pretending to be the outrageous pop star.
He explains, "Lady GaGa - I was thinking of the type of song a contemporary musician would write so I started thinking about her. I started thinking of how she would write the music to this song and got quite into being Lady GaGa in an odd way."
The song's lyrics were written by White's bandmate Alison Mosshart, who he insists rivals GaGa for live performances. He gushes, "The lyrics are all from Alison, who was coming from a different direction. She is an incredible person to work with and you can't touch her on stage - she's one of the...

Jack White has claimed that former White Stripes bandmate Meg is over her "anxiety" issues. The band had to cut dates from their last world tour in 2007 due to Meg's problems, but Jack has revealed that their partnership may be destined to reunite in the future, He told The Times: "I would like to, and I don't think her anxiety exists any more, but I don't know. Dead Weather -- featuring Alison Mosshart of The Kills and Jack White -- has been busily prepping the release of its second full length, the delightfully monikered "Sea of Cowards," due May 11. At least one single has already splayed out all over the internets earlier this month. "Die By the Drop" was creeping, dark, truly collaborative and had the music video to boot, causing me to consider if that, combined together in a vial, White and Mosshart together would make Johnny Depp. And now there's "Gasoline," a leak (or "leak") from last week. Perhaps in a scrambling effort to patch...

The gum-smacking gutter pop of Dum Dum Girls’ full-length debut I Will Be is a rough-edged cinderblock that’s been blasted off of Phil Spector’s sweepingly dramatic “Wall Of Sound” productions of the early ’60s. The state-of-the-art grandness of those pre-Beatles girl-group hits has been scuffed up and shattered, but the feisty attitude and relentlessly catchy hooks remain as indestructible as ever. Working under the adopted name Dee Dee—a name shared by members of obvious touchstones The Crystals and Ramones—head Dum Dum Girl Kristin Gundred is as puritan in her adherence to self-imposed restrictions as Jack White ...

Jack White is juggling so many projects it’s hard to keep up with the man. He lends his talents to projects with his three bands, then puts on his producer hat and later switches to playing a record mogul—while somehow finding time to record with Jay-z. And the latest on the Jw news front: The Dead Weather (the fourpiece that sees White working with The Kills’ Alison Mosshart) has just announced the details of their sophomore album, Sea Of Cowards....

The laws of musical expectations state that when you get two powerhouses like Jay-z and Jack White together, the result should be nothing short of mindblowing. Recently, we found out about the dream team when White told UK GQ that the pair had worked together. “We did a song together a few weeks ago. It was incredible,” White said. “I played him something that I’ve been kicking around for a while and he immediately came out with words for it. It’s unbelievable-sounding.”...

The Dead Weather has set May 11 as the release date for “Sea of Cowards,” the Jack White-led band’s follow up to “Horehound.” First single will likely be the fierce “Die By the Drop,” which features White and Alison Mosshart trading off vocals. Here a brief snippet of it here, as well as the B-side. The set was previously slated for March, but moved to May 7 internationally and May 11 stateside, according to entertainment.ie. Floria Sigismondi, director of “The Runaways,” directed the video for the tune, which goes to radio next week, according to video static. Sigismondi previously directed...
