Exclusive: ArtsEd has been taken to an employment tribunal by a former teacher who was fired after raising concerns about a “culture of fear” at the Andrew Lloyd Webber-backed drama school.
The legal battle emerged at a London Central Employment Tribunal hearing last week, in which arguments relating to Matthew Bulmer’s claim were heard by an employment judge.
ArtsEd’s culture has been called into question in recent months after Deadline reported on allegations about the conduct of principal Julie Spencer, including claims she bullied staff and students.
Spencer is currently on medical leave pending the outcome of an independent review into her conduct, which was commissioned following Deadline’s reporting. She has denied the allegations against her through an ArtsEd spokesperson.
Bulmer was appointed as the head of ArtsEd’s Day School and Sixth Form in February 2022 but was fired in August last year, resulting in his unfair dismissal claim.

Exclusive: ArtsEd has lost another two board members after Deadline exposed bullying and misconduct allegations at the prestigious London drama school.
Simon Dowson-Collins, general counsel at Rupert Murdoch’s publishing firm HarperCollins UK, and London Metropolitan University executive Jennifer Wilkinson have stepped down as trustees.
They were appointed in June 2022, meaning they only served for a year and a half on the ArtsEd board. Under UK charity rules, trustees can be in place for nine years or more.
Their exit coincides with the departure of Brian Brodie, who resigned as chairman in December for personal reasons. It followed criticism of the board’s handling of the bullying allegations.
Dowson-Collins and Wilkinson did not respond to a request for comment and the reasons for their departure are unclear.
An ArtsEd spokesperson said: “We have ten trustees serving the institution and managing all the necessary day to day responsibilities. We are in...

The 75th annual Directors Guild Awards have been handed out at the Beverly Hilton, and the night’s big award brought a bit of a surprise as Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, directors of Everything Everywhere All at Once, beat out Steven Spielberg for the top prize.
The DGA is a strong predictor of Oscar success historically, missing the eventual Best Director winner only eight times in 74 years. Last year, the guild awarded Jane Campion its top film prize for The Power of the Dog, which marked a big step on her path to winning Best Director at the Oscars.
After two consecutive years awarding female directors its top prize (Jane Campion and Chloé Zhao) and watching them go on to take the corresponding Oscar, the Director’s Guild of America nominated a slate of men this year. Despite strong work from Sarah Polley for Women Talking and Gina Prince-Bythewood for...

It’ll be a case of Succession-on-Succession violence at the 74th annual DGA Awards. The Directors Guild revealed its TV nominations Wednesday, and all five nominees for Dramatic Series are episodes of HBO’s juggernaut starring Jeremy Strong and Brian Cox.
On the Comedy Series side, Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso is a triple nominee alongside HBO Max’s Hacks and HBO’s The White Lotus.
Today’s nominations for the DGA Awards, which will be handed out March 12, also cover documentaries and commercials. See the full list below. The guild’s film nominations will be revealed Thursday.
The Movies for Television and Limited Series categories is chock-full of big names: Barry Jenkins for Amazon’s The Underground Railroad, Barry Levinson and Danny Strong for separate episodes of Hulu’s Dopesick, Hiro Murai for HBO Max’s Station Eleven and Craig Zobel for HBO’s Mare of Easttown.

Mankind found a way to overpower its Gods in Tom Paton’s throwback sci-fi horror Black Site. After discovering that Elder Gods were in-hiding and draining our planet of its most precious resource (people) for millennia, humanity found ancient incantations to bind them and ultimately deport them back from whence they came with no chance of return. It’s the type of knowledge that could disenfranchise the masses with proof of our “creators” being nothing more than a malignant species from far away that craves our souls as food. So those in the know reinforce the lie by building so-called “black sites” with the off-grid capability of facilitating the incarceration and expulsion of these nightmare fuel Lovecraftian monsters. And right now one is preparing to do exactly that.
One man’s enemy is another’s salvation, though. If enough people see Elder Gods as their makers, they’ll surely sacrifice themselves if asked.
