Indigenous stories aren’t always told with the care, nuance and authenticity they deserve in Hollywood, and, more often than not, their stories aren’t told at all.
While “Killers of the Flower Moon” has certainly prompted discourse within indigenous communities about who should tell what stories, the Osage Nation Congress has unanimously endorsed the creative contributions that Lily Gladstone and Scott George made to the film. The tribal governing body recently passed bills expressing support for their roles in Martin Scorsese’s historical epic. Signed by all 12 members of the legislative branch, the bills became law on Feb. 2.
Scorsese’s film is based on the murdering spree that targeted Oklahoma’s Osage Nation in the early 20th century, which was executed with the intention of stealing the community’s oil wealth. Joseph Williams was eight years old when his father John earned his first Academy Award nomination for scoring the sudsy big-screen adaptation of Jacqueline Susann's "Valley of the Dolls." Yes, the legendary composer whose music would whisk moviegoers off to a galaxy far, far away, and make us believe a man could fly once flung us into the ugly, pill-popping drudgery of 1960s Hollywood.
John Williams was the son of jazz drummer Johnny Williams, so music has always coursed through the blood of this brood. But while John could occasionally knock out a magnificently jazzy score, he didn't become the Max Steiner of his era until he delivered the nerve-jangling, two-note motif for Steven Spielberg's "Jaws." Almost 50 years later, he is the most beloved scorer of the post-New Hollywood era. He's practically a rock star. Wherever he conducts an orchestra, there will be a roaring, sold-out crowd.

The Harry Potter universe returns to the big screen with Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them. Here's our review.
This review is spoiler-free.
From the familiar warm tingles of John Williams’ theme, to a wonderfully cinematic filling in of backstory through magical newspapers, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them’s opening isn’t shy about its Harry Potter roots. Nor should it be. Bringing back together director David Yates (who helmed the final four Potter films), producer David Heyman and author J K Rowling – this time as a debut screenwriter – it’s a tantalising reunion, a platform for a quintet of films set some 70 years before the Harry Potter stories we already know.
The setting this time is 1926 New York, brought lavishly to life with the skill and production design integral to this particular cinematic world (the sheer craft is quite incredible). Within ten minutes, I found myself settled back,...

Blake Shelton was the only coach with a steal going into the final part of the knockout rounds, and he used it to take Craig Wayne Boyd to the live rounds on The Voice.
Team Blake: Allison Bray vs. Taylor Brashears
Blake paired Allison Bray and Taylor Brashears in the hopes of narrowing down his country artists. Allison came into rehearsals with Dixie Chicks’ “Sin Wagon” wearing six-inch heels, which Taylor Swift thought were hindering her performance. After taking her shoes off, per Swift’s request, Allison was able to let loose onstage.
Taylor went for a different tone, choosing “Landslide,” hoping to show off a softer side to her voice. Taylor struggled with some notes during rehearsals, and Swift encouraged her to really connect to one person in the audience to sing to.
Gwen Stefani was impressed with Allison’s stage presence, but was blown away by Taylor’s intricate vocals.

Leave it to coach Pharrell Williams to make a decision that had everyone's jaws on the floor.
The dynamic new coach stunned his fellow coaches – and just about everyone else watching – when he made a surprise choice to close out the second night of The Voice's knockout rounds.
Williams pitted California-based Elyjuh René, 18, against Ricky Manning, a 19-year-old Florida native who now sings in New York City subway stations. The duo received coaching from special advisor Taylor Swift, and initially all signs pointed to Manning for the win.
"You look like a star," Williams told Manning, while pointing out his Twilight vibe.

The Voice knockouts continued Tuesday, with Gwen Stefani using up her steal to grab Ricky Manning from Team Pharrell Williams.
Team Gwen: Taylor John Williams vs. Troy Ritchie
Troy Ritchie walked into rehearsal with Taylor Swift and coach Gwen and brought out his guitar to cover Outkast’s “Hey Ya!” After his first run through, both Gwen and Taylor advised him to distance himself a bit more from the original by performing the first verse and chorus acoustically before launching into the full blown dance track.
Taylor John Williams chose to sing “Mad World,” clearly surprising Taylor Swift – or ‘Swifty’ as she declared herself during rehearsals. Taylor had trouble connecting to the audience and controlling his nervous movements on stage during rehearsal, but he turned it around for the performance.

Gwen Stefani was the only coach left with a steal on Tuesday night’s The Voice final battle rounds, using it to snatch up Team Adam's Beth Spangler.
Team Pharrell: Brittany Butler vs. Ricky Manning
Pharrell Williams paired Brittany Butler and Ricky Manning with a jazzy take on “On Broadway,” and, while they did put a jazz spin on the song, neither Brittany nor Ricky were particularly at ease with the song. In rehearsals, Pharrell advised both Brittany and Ricky to try to find a way to be themselves with the song. “You’re, like, trying out for the X-men. There’s no reason to hold back,” Pharrell said.
Gwen loved both Brittany and Ricky, commending them for their stage presence, but Adam Levine gave the battle to Ricky because of his improvement from the blind auditions. Pharrell was torn, but in the end he declared Ricky the winner.

New York — Chick Corea took the unusual step of releasing four major recordings last year covering a wide gamut of music – everything from solo piano improvisations to a concerto for jazz quintet and chamber orchestra.
Now, the 71-year-old jazz pianist and composer is in the unusual position of competing against himself in two categories at the Feb. 10 awards show in Los Angeles.
"People in the music business say don't make too many records because they'll compete against one another," Corea said in a phone interview. "Well, it's exactly what's happening, but I'm very happy about it because what I love to do is making a lot of music."
His album "Hot House," the latest chapter in his 40-year partnership with vibraphonist Gary Burton, has three nominations – best jazz instrumental album, improvised jazz solo for the title track and instrumental composition for "Mozart Goes Dancing."

The Apocalypse
Written and Directed by Andrew Zuchero
Many filmmakers attempt to do too much with a low-budget, short film. Worse yet, some will often make their short too long. While short films in theory are far more easy to produce than feature films, they do present an artist with one major roadblock: Trying to cram a clever story into so little time isn’t an easy task. While many shorts use the same structure and story telling techniques as longer films, the film’s turning points come at a much quicker pace. Therefore, a five minute film, should have less than a minute worth of exposition. The most successful shorts are those that concentrate on a simple idea. In The Apocalypse, written and directed by Andrew Zuchero, an idea can be deadly, and the beauty of the film is how Zuchero spins a very simple idea into something far more twisted.

Aside from the Oscar nominations themselves, the most important development in the Oscar race this week was, of course, the Eddie nominations, from the American Cinema Editors. Wait, what about the Golden Globes? The Critics' Choice Awards? The BAFTA nominations for the British Academy Awards? Aren't they big deals? Nope, not this year, not when it comes to their value as tools to predict who'll win Oscars. The Academy's decision this year to announce its nominations on the morning of Thursday, January 10 effectively upstaged everyone else's kudos lists this week, including the Critics Choice Awards (handed out later that evening), the BAFTA nominations (released hours earlier on Wednesday), and the Globes (given out three days later). To be sure, these three sorta-major awards galas are full of interesting information, barometers as to what the thinking might be in Hollywood as far as which Oscar movies currently have trending buzz and which don't.

The 70th annual Golden Globe Awards are being presented live this evening on NBC by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and Christoph Waltz took home the night's first prize, winning Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for his role in "Django Unchained."

Some would argue that this awards ceremony is somewhat of a farce, with the 93-member Hollywood Foreign Press Association slapping the backs of their favourite A-Listers in return for them showing up to their party. Well, we’re not going to argue with that, but equally the ceremony proves to be a fun little sideshow to the Oscars each year, and can even help shed some light on who’ll be walking away from the Dolby Theatre with a little gold man six weeks from tonight.
Tonight’s 70th Golden Globes Awards are expected to kick off around 1am UK time, and we’ll be bringing you all the updates from the awards throughout the 3-hour ceremony. After three years of Ricky Gervais hosting,...

I don’t think it’s an understatement to say how much of a borderline unhealthy excitement I had for Theatrhythm Final Fantasy when it was first announced. After all, Final Fantasy is one of those series that has managed to transcend mediums, and has consistently had great music to back it up over the past 25 years. Hell, I’m the kind of guy that drops $185 on a concert entirely dedicated to Final Fantasy music. Nobuo Uematsu, the composer responsible for about 90 percent of that history, is often touted as the John Williams of the video game industry. Who couldn’t pick out that signature ominous drum beat in the beginning of One-Winged Angel? Who hasn’t struggled to hold back tears when hearing Zanarkand when remembering the sad turn of events of the game? Hell, the prelude itself, present in every single game over the past few decades, is...

The Artist and Hugo tied with five Oscars apiece at the 84th Academy Awards, but the French film claimed key awards, while the acclaim for Martin Scorsese's film was mostly technical
In the end, it was a moral victory for The Artist, the French silent film that has seemingly reignited the film industry's love of its own happy-go-lucky origins. Although the statistics will say that it earned the same amount of Academy Awards – five – as its main Hollywood rival, the 3D kids fantasy adventure Hugo, the fact that The Artist earned three of the top awards, including best picture, meant that it earned a place as the Oscars' favourite film of 2012.
The evening began with all the attention focused on Hugo. One of its stars, Sacha Baron Cohen, found himself being escorted (at a very leisurely pace) from the red-carpet area outside the Hollywood and Highland Center, after carrying...

Mark this moment, folks: Director Martin Scorsese has made his first family-friendly movie, the PG-rated "Hugo."
It was hard to believe the king of mobster dramas would be interested in directing the adaptation of an award-winning children's book, but Scorsese is already generating Oscar buzz for his take on the beautifully illustrated tale of a 12-year-old orphan (Asa Butterfield) living in the Paris train station.
Time magazine movie critic Richard Corliss has even called Hugo "a masterpiece," but will it look like any other Scorsese movie? Probably not. Here are seven signature Scorsese-isms you won't find in "Hugo."
Classic Rock Soundtrack
Scorsese loves using his favorite classic-rock anthems in his soundtracks. The director is such a fan of The Rolling Stones' single "Gimme Shelter" he's featured it in three of his movies: "Goodfellas," "Casino" and "The Departed." But it's not just his beloved Stones (see also the "Jumpin' Jack Flash...

Update (August 23, 2011): We have learned that composer Alexandre Desplat has written a theme for My Week with Marilyn. The piece called Marilyn’s Theme will be adapted by Conrad Pope into his score. Pope has been an orchestrator on a number of movies scored by Desplat in the past couple of years. Most recently, he worked with the composer on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.
Conrad Pope is currently scoring the upcoming drama My Week with Marilyn. The movie directed by Simon Curtis stars Michelle Williams, Kenneth Branagh, Eddie Redmayne, Judi Dench, Dominic Cooper, Emma Watson, Julia Ormond, Derek Jacobi and Dougray Scott. The film chronicles a week in the life of Monroe during the production of Laurence Olivier’s film The Prince and the Showgirl. Screenwriter Adrian Hodges adapted the memoirs of Colin Clark, the assistant who worked with Monroe on the production of the picture.

The magic of "Harry Potter" is coming to an end, but at least the masterminds behind the franchise are selfless enough to share it with us.
In a follow up to the best-selling 2010 book "Harry Potter Film Wizardry," Harper Collins has announced that they'll be publishing "Harry Potter Page to Screen: The Complete Filmmaking Journey" on October 25, a book that includes interviews with Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and more, plus commentary from director David Yates and producer David Heyman among others.
Since "Page to Screen" will be the first book to cover the creation of all eight "Harry Potter" flicks, we have plenty of questions we'd love to see answered in the compendium's 528 glossy pages. Click on after the jump to see what we hope to find.

The official list of Academy Award-eligible scores has been released, according to Variety. There are the usual list of big names — James Newton Howard (The Tourist, Salt) has four scores in contention, Alexandre Desplat (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 1, The King’s Speech) has three — and newcomers. (Pray for a Tron: Legacy upset nomination: can you imagine a ceremony with Daft Punk and The Social Network’s Trent Reznor?) But the list is just as notable for the names that aren’t on the list. The Academy disqualified Clint Mansell’s Black Swan and Carter Burwell’s True Grit...

When it was announced 18 months ago that half-French/half-robot DJ duo Daft Punk were on board to score and produce the soundtrack for the upcoming “Tron: Legacy,” as much was made of the duo’s involvement as the movie itself.
The blogs went wet, gushing over the synergy between the group’s dancey, futuristic sounds and the glimmering futureworld of a film based on a 1982 movie that, at the time, was at the forefront of computer graphic imagery.
But to paraphrase Paul Simon, If you took all the Daft Punk film collaborations, they’d never match my sweet imagination.
Untainted fantasy is usually better than reality and with the massive marketing blitz being showered on Daft Punk, the end result is a lot of sound and fury signifying, well, not nothing, but a fairly standard symphonic film score with added electronic flourishes.

When we watch a movie, we hardly give thought to how the film’s soundtrack affects our emotional core. From the tension we feel while watching Eagle Eye and Law Abiding Citizen, or the adrenaline rush we get while imagining ourselves behind the wheel in Fast & Furious, Brian Tyler’s music stirs up the emotional highs and lows we experience while enjoying our favorite films.
Having scored some of today’s hottest movies, by some of the biggest names in film (Steven Spielberg for example), Brian has not only established himself as an accomplished musician, but also as one of the youngest film composers in Tinsel Town. So when he agreed to interview with Iae, it was music to our ears.
