Scoop is a dramatized feature about the BBC’s Newsnight team scoring a sensationally revealing 2019 interview with Prince Andrew about his relationship with millionaire sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. For a film about a journalistic exclusive, it has the most generic title possible. There are already at least four other movies out there called Scoop, including a rubbishy 2006 Woody Allen film and a 1987 adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s peerless 1938 satirical novel, a twofer satire of both the press and the British aristocracy.
Sadly, this latest Scoop has none of Waugh’s acid wit or alkaline intelligence. Although serviceable as a retread of the events that led up to the royal interview conducted by Newsnight anchor Emily Maitlis (impersonated here by Gillian Anderson), an interview recreated for big chunks of the running time, it doesn’t significantly deepen or enrich our understanding of the personalities involved — let alone journalism, privilege, sexual exploitation or the price of fish.

Exclusive: With the almost impossible-to-believe Post Office scandal bedecking the front of every national newspaper this week, the writer of the ITV smash drama about the saga has said it “tapped into” frustrations with the “politics of the moment.”
Gwyneth Hughes, who penned the Toby Jones-starring four-parter, said the team has been “blown away” and “completely surprised” by the cut-through and media attention generated by Mr Bates vs The Post Office, as she detailed the legal quagmire and years of gaining people’s trust they went through to get the show from inception to screen. She was speaking in the hours before a motion attempting to speedily put the scandal right was debated by dozens of lawmakers in parliament.

Having collaborated with Writer Frank McGuinness on a number of projects including their BAFTA-nominated short film The Stronger, Actor/Filmmaker Lia Williams returns to the director’s chair for another McGuinness-penned script in the form of Jsb Films produced historical prison drama Samovar. The story is an imagining of Swedish Architect and Humanitarian Raoul Wallenberg’s life spent behind bars in a Soviet prison and the development of a tender relationship he forms with a fellow inmate, who recounts to him the impact of humanitarian actions. It’s a fascinating rendering of the prison life of a man who remains quietly defiant of a bleak and brutal world and Dn is delighted to Premiere Samovar online accompanied by an interview with Williams about her ongoing working relationship with Frank McGuinness, the practical challenges of shooting alongside a working prison, and the empathetic understanding she has for the actor’s process.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Crown Season 5, Episode 3, “Mou Mou.”] The Crown has always had a penchant for standalone episodes and one particular installment in Season 5 presents an almost unbelievable story surrounding Mohamed Al Fayed. The installment titled, “Mou Mou,” opens in 1940s Alexandria, Egypt, where a young Mohamed Fayed (Amir El-Masry) is doing quite well peddling goods on the streets to make a living. At the same time, he begins cutting a business deal with a young man on the other side of the fences, and he catches sight of the Duke of Windsor (Alex Jennings) and his wife Wallis Simpson (Lia Williams) as they pay a visit within the walls of the ritzy establishment just out of reach for Mohamed. As the episode continues, Mohamed tells his father about seeing the former King of Britain, to which he gets a blunt response. Mohamed’s father isn’t a fan of the royals,...

Britain produces cop shows with an abandon that defies our present moment’s global supply shortages. Just this week, ITV launches two new procedurals – Ridley and The Suspect – while the BBC brings back its hit surveillance drama, The Capture, for a second season. It is a national addiction on a scale usually reserved for tea consumption, football hooliganism and insincere apologies. Within this obsession, The Capture represents the genre at its classiest and, though it might upset some patriots at our state broadcaster to say so, at its most American.
Holliday Grainger – surely one of the most charismatic actors to remain predominantly constrained to the small screen – returns as Rachel Carey, now promoted to Dci and working within the bubble of Correction. Correction, as The Capture’s first series exposed, is hi-tech audiovisual manipulation software, used for the planting of digital evidence by the authorities. Most biopics are thuddingly prosaic: There’s a lot of “this happened, then that happened,” performed by a famous person covering themselves in latex in an attempt to resemble another famous person.
In the hands of British auteur Terence Davies, however, biopics can be poetry, although his choice of subject matter probably helps in that department. On the heels of his gorgeous and contemplative “A Quiet Passion,” about the life of Emily Dickinson, he returns with another passionately quiet portrait, this time exploring Siegfried Sassoon in “Benediction.”
It’s an impressionistic collage, and Davies skillfully jumps from the 1910s to the 1960s and back again. “Benediction” fleetingly encapsulates the horrors of WWI — Sassoon went from being a decorated soldier to an outspoken critic against those who would prolong the conflict — the shadow-world of British gay men in the decades before homosexuality was decriminalized in the UK, and the bitterness of...

One of our greatest working directors has wrapped production on his latest film. Following 2011’s The Deep Blue Sea, 2015’s Sunset Song, and 2016’s A Quiet Passion, British director Terence Davies was set to begin shooting Benediction, about World War I poet Siegfried Sassoon, earlier this year, but the pandemic halted plans. He was able to recently resume and now the film has wrapped.
Led by Jack Lowden he plays Sassoon, marking Davies’ second biopic of a poet, immediately following his Emily Dickinson film. Sassoon was known for his epic, satirical poems detailing trench warfare and the horrors of a war in which he fought bravely but spoke out against. He was also a closeted gay man in Britain, where those in power considered his sexual identity a crime.
The film, which has debuted its first image above via Deadline, also stars Peter Capaldi as Sassoon in his older years,...

With the coronavirus pandemic forcing production on many scripted and un-scripted series to shutter, there were plenty wondering precisely how many original feathers NBCU’s Peacock would be able to launch with, especially after chairman Matt Strauss said the bulk of the streaming service’s originals slate had been pushed to 2021.
The service has now answered that question, announcing which originals will be available upon its July 15 launch. Headlining the list is the series adaptation of Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World,” which is set to star “Solo: A Star Wars Story” and “Hail, Caesar!” vet Alden Ehrenreich, “Downton Abbey” alum Jessica Brown Findlay, and Harry Lloyd.
In addition, subscribers to the new service will be able to watch the first seasons of international thriller “The Capture,” David Schwimmer comedy “Intelligence,” sports documentary “In Deep with Ryan Lochte,” and the feature “Psych 2: Lassie Come Home” when the streamer launches.

It’s strange to call an essentially tragic limited series magical, but the word applies to “National Treasure: Kiri.”
The four-part series fits squarely into the top tier of U.K. crime dramas, which means few characters start out with any contentment, and things deteriorate from there. But Jack Thorne’s writing for both seasons of “National Treasure” never slides into the lazy habits of misery porn. “Kiri,” like its predecessor, is both brisk and illuminating, providing compassionate and honest character studies.
Each character in the latest incarnation of “National Treasure,” as was the case with the stellar first version, feels alive and specific and believably capable of a great many things. Wondering what each person might do next gives the drama a thrumming undercurrent of suspense, but Euros Lyn’s direction allows “Kiri” to breathe at the right moments, too. It’s well-paced and contemplative, a tough combination to pull off,...

Doubt was the engine of writer Jack Thorne’s previous Channel 4 drama National Treasure, in which Robbie Coltrane played a popular entertainer on trial for multiple sexual assaults. Was Coltrane’s character guilty or not? Whose memory of events was reliable? Who was lying and who was telling the truth?
Kiri, Thorne’s latest, directed by Euros Lyn, is driven by blame. When a child in care is murdered, where should the blame land? With her killer, certainly, but also with those charged with keeping her safe—foster parents, grandparents, social worker?

Netflix’s sleek period drama The Crown has captivated audiences with its peek into the private life of Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy), but many fans may be wondering how much of the glamorous series is based on real life. While some elements — like the Duke and Duchess of Windsor’s frosty relationship with the royal family and Princess Margaret’s romance with the dashing Pete Townsend — are true, several key elements of the series are either totally made up or exaggerated for dramatic effect. (And let’s be honest, even the life of a royal sometimes needs TV magic to make it more watchable.

Netflix's pricy royal family drama The Crown has stand-out performances from John Lithgow and Matt Smith, but lacks story...
Warning: contains spoilers.
The great cliche about the British is that we’re a stoic lot; emotionally reserved and only ever prone to bouts of ‘hayfever’ when Bambi’s mum dies.
Netflix’s £100m production of The Crown tries to buck this trope with a ten-part series dramatising the personal and political events surrounding the first decade of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign from 1952.
One part Downton Abbey, one part House Of Cards (the original of course), The Crown never quite decides if it wants to commit itself to a political drama or total supposition about the inner workings of the Court of St James's.

Mulligan plays Kyra Hollis, a schoolteacher who receives an unexpected visit from her former lover, recently widowed restaurateur Tom Sergeant (Nighy). On a cold London night,...

The Union Jack will be flying over Broadway big-time this coming season, as talk heats up about bringing Bill Nighy, Carey Mulligan and the acclaimed National Theatre revival of David Hare’s Skylight to New York in the spring. I wrote a few weeks ago that while the Stephen Daldry production will be telecast in the fall by Nt Live, far better would be the chance to see Hare’s extraordinarily moving play — about the expired romance between an older, self-made businessman and an idealistic young teacher, roles created by Michael Gambon and Lia Williams — on Broadway. This week the show, which […]...

London — Skylight was first staged in 1995 at London’s National Theatre and then transferred to the West End and Broadway. Back then, David Hare’s two-and-a-half-hander struck a timely nerve in Britain with its juxtaposition of entrepreneurial swagger and socially-conscious altruism, personified in two lead characters first played by Michael Gambon and Lia Williams. The ideological stakes were still hot when Bill Nighy took over the male lead in 1997, around the time Labour won the General Election. Now that Nighy is reprising the role opposite Carey Mulligan (An Education, The Great Gatsby), the play’s themes

Those wanting a glimpse into Hollywood's future should pay attention to what British theatre critics are saying today. Ejiofor, Dench, Weisz, Redmayne – the list of graduates goes on
It's that time of year again: the awards season. And while I doubt that the Oscars committee is losing any sleep over the fact that tomorrow is the 25th edition of the UK Critics' Circle theatre awards, there's more connection between the two events than you might think. Chiwetel Ejiofor is a hot contender for best actor at the Oscars; in 2000 he picked up the critics' best newcomer gong for Blue/Orange and in 2007 shared the top Shakespeare award for his Othello. Judi Dench is also among this year's Oscar nominees for best actress – a prize she collected from the Brit crits in 1997 for Amy's View. What we aisle-squatters think today, Hollywood thinks tomorow.
At the risk of sounding self-congratulatory, I'd say...

Andrew Pulver looks back through some of the key films of director Michael Winner, who has died aged 77
Play It Cool (1962)

After a string of short films, Winner broke into features in the early 60s, with low budget thrillers and trendy pop musicals. Quite a few of them had "cool" in the title – including the nudie pic Some Like It Cool. The Billy Fury pic Play It Cool was considerably more commercially viable, no doubt inspired by the success of Cliff Richard's Young Ones film. Fury – in a real stretch – plays an up-and coming rocker called Billy Universe; Anna Palk the heiress who he might or might not get together with, and Dennis Price (!) as her overbearing dad.

1 Film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (3D)
Well, not so very unexpected. Every move has been tracked by fanboys, from the casting of Martin Freeman as Bilbo and Benedict Cumberbatch as the dragon Smaug to the return of the king, Peter Jackson, to take over directing from Guillermo del Toro. But Middle-earth (or, as it's sometimes known, New Zealand) is back for the next three Christmases.
3 Pop Scott Walker
The avant-garde Walker Brother returns with his first album since 2006's The Drift. Not for the faint-hearted, Bish Bosch finds the former romantic hero deep in dystopian territory, at once sonorous and rigorous.
3 Classical H7steria

When Secret State hits our screens, watch out for the vicar: he's played by novelist and former MP Chris Mullin, who wrote the book it's based on, A Very British Coup. Here is his diary from his time in front of the camera
Thursday, 16 February, 2012
To Manchester where I am to have a walk-on part in a new TV version of my first novel, A Very British Coup, about the overthrow of a radical, very left-wing prime minister. Not that this new series bears much resemblance to my book. Even the title has been changed – to Secret State – and the credits say "inspired by" rather than "based on".
Director Ed Fraiman has kindly agreed that I might have a walk-on part, a la Alfred Hitchcock. I thought he might reincarnate me as a backbench MP or even a minister; instead I am to be the vicar conducting a memorial service...
