- Played Le Bret in the 1946 Broadway revival of "Cyrano de Bergerac". This was the production in which Jose Ferrer first played Cyrano. He reprised the role twice on television, in productions that also starred Ferrer, but did not play the role in the 1950 film version.
- He played the role of Montano in the famous 1943 Broadway production of Shakespeare's "Othello", starring Paul Robeson, a production which played eight months on Broadway, making it the longest-running Shakespeare play to ever be produced in the U.S. This is a record that still stands.
