- Served in the U.S. Navy as Executive Officer on the destroyer-minesweepers U.S.S. Zane and U.S.S. Southard. This later became the inspiration for his novel The Caine Mutiny (1954).
- Had three sons. The eldest, Abraham Isaac Wouk, died in 1951, shortly before his fifth birthday.
- Bore a startling resemblance to actor Van Heflin.
- Is a member of Pi Lambda Phi fraternity, NY Alpha chapter.
- Son of Esther (Levine) and Abraham Isaac Wouk. His parents were Jewish emigrants from Minsk, Belarus.
