Superhero movies’ reign continues at the box office, with the Marvel Cinematic Universe standing as the juggernaut of the genre. While movies like Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man or the early 2000s X-Men films are often hailed for launching this expansive series of action-packed blockbusters, there’s a trio of superhero films often overlooked in discussions about the MCU’s origins: the Blade movies.
Wesley Snipes in the Blade Trilogy
Released 25 years ago in 1998, Blade hit theaters at a time when Hollywood was still grappling with how to approach superhero films seriously. These movies played a crucial role in paving the way for the confidence needed to tackle adaptations of iconic characters like the X-Men and Spider-Man.
Suggestedx-Men vs. Blade: Which Is The Better MCU Progenitor Trilogy
Without Blade leading the charge, it’s unlikely that the momentum necessary for what eventually evolved into the Marvel Cinematic Universe would have been generated.

Comic book fans in the late 1990s likely recall the ambitious plan by Artisan Entertainment, a then-rising indie film studio, to make a long series of mid-budget films based on Marvel superheroes. Avi Arad, then the CEO of Marvel Entertainment, had overseen a deal that would allow Artisan to make movies with Black Panther, Thor, Deadpool, Ant-Man, Iron Fist, and Morbius, as well as Power Pack, Longshot, and an irreverent dark comedy about Mort the Dead Teenager. The deal was finalized in 2000. In 2003, however, Artisan was acquired by Lionsgate, effectively ending what would have been the ambitiously planned early-2000s mid-budget version of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Despite how successful Disney's MCU would become a decade later, Marvel was once considered a non-viable source of film revenue. Indeed, while comic book sales were up across the board in the 1990s, Marvel was struggling to make their characters more visible in the marketplace.

The Blade film and television franchise are one of the most popular and enduring action series. The lead character in the franchise is based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, which features Wesley Snipes as Blade.
Marvel Comics writer Marv Wolfman and artist Gene Colan created the character in 1973 as a supporting player in The Tomb of Dracula comic book series.
Blade Trilogy is the story of a half-human, half-vampire superhero who fights vampires to protect humanity.
The first film in the series, Blade (1998), was a critical and commercial success and launched a franchise that would span three sequels and multiple spin-offs.

Sony Pictures’ latest antibody antihero movie, Morbius, which stars Jared Leto as the Living Vampire, has drawn first blood. Following in the footsteps of the split-personality, villain movie Venom, Morbius is an origin story with a nemesis at the waiting, and the promise of bloody battles to come. Yet the self-made vampire should have made his entrance years ago. Indeed, Morbius was initially set up to be the main villain in Blade II, after Blade (1998) starring Wesley Snipes opened the wound to modern superhero films.
Writer David S. Goyer planned to feature Morbius as the main antagonist in the not-yet-produced sequel, according to the Blade DVD commentary. Blade director Stephen Norrington even shot a teaser scene, which was eventually cut, promising dark deeds to come from Dr. Michael Morbius in a sequel that never materialized.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is renowned today for promoting yet-to-be-made-films via surprise cameos that appear like last-minute product placement spots.

Snipes is a charismatic vampire-human action hero in this exciting, energetic pre-mcu Marvel movie from 1998
The first film in the Blade trilogy, made in 1998, is getting a re-release: Wesley Snipes is the implacable and massively ripped daywalker marching around in his shades and leatherised protective armour, slaying the vampires with his cold steel implements and martial-arts skills. Part action hero, part superhero, Blade is a vampire-human halfbreed born from a pregnant woman, for whom labour was horribly induced by the trauma of being bitten. So he has vampire powers but is endowed with the ability to withstand daylight; he is forced to consume a certain serum to suppress his blood-thirst, a methadone substitute for the real thing.
As a homeless, friendless street kid, Blade came under the protection of Abraham Whistler (Kris Kristofferson), a tough old guy who instilled in Blade the vampire-hunting vocation. N’Bushe Wright plays Karen Jenson, the...
