Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from “With So Little to Be Sure Of,” the sixth episode of the final season of ABC’s “Station 19.”
Boris Kodjoe is ready to start his next chapter. Since wrapping production last month on the final season of ABC’s venerable firefighter drama “Station 19,” the 51-year-old actor — who rose to fame in the early aughts in the Showtime drama “Soul Food” — has set his sights on broadening his horizons.
Chief among them is working more behind the camera. After directing his wife (and former “Soul Food” costar) Nicole Ari Parker in the Lifetime movie “Safe Room,” Kodjoe expressed an interest in helming an episode of “Station 19,” and his wish was granted midway through the show’s final 10-episode run. It was the ideal training ground for Kodjoe, whose exacting nature earned him a special nickname on set.

Although collecting physical media doesn’t have the convenience appeal of streaming films, there is now sort of a stigma with purchasing movies through online platforms. Although its possible to compile a collection of movies through an online library, consumers will ultimately be at the whim of the service should it choose to keep the title available on their server. Additionally, there are a number of titles that don’t happen to find their way to have streaming access and physical media distributors like Shout and Vinegar Syndrome have dedicated their business to some overlooked titles.

The timing of Mel Brooks' 1987 spoof "Spaceballs" was, when one thinks about it, rather peculiar. 1987 was a fallow time for the "Star Wars" saga. The last film in the series, "Ewoks: The Battle for Endor," had come out a full two years prior, and it was not terribly well-received or even widely seen. "Star Wars" had begun making the rounds on VHS, but there was, at the time, no solid plan to make any additional films, nor was "Star Wars" the massive commercial presence it would come to be. As pointed out in "Spaceballs," however, "Return of the Jedi" merch was still lingering in stores; one of the running gags throughout Brooks' film is that the characters themselves own "Spaceballs" tie-in products.
Indeed, in the film's funniest meta-gag, the evil Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) and Colonel Sandurz (George Wyner) rent a VHS copy of "Spaceballs" and fast-forward to the scene they're in.

Mel Brooks' 1974 Western "Blazing Saddles" takes place in a town called Rockridge, a peaceful and very, very racist berg out on the edge of the Western frontier. The citizens, as described by Jim (Gene Wilder), are the common clay of the New West. "You know," he adds, "morons." In a cute gag, the citizens are named Olson Johnson, Howard Johnson, Harriett Johnson, Gabby Johnson, the Reverend Johnson, and Anal Johnson. On one hand, the similar surnames could just be an absurdist gag from a writer who opted to plug in generic names for the characters rather than invent new ones for each. On the other, it could have been Brooks making a cute joke about how literally incestuous Rockridge was. Are relatives marrying and having kids? It sure looks that way. This author prefers the second interpretation.
Flash forward 13 years later, Brooks wrote and directed "Spaceballs," a spoof of the "Star Wars" movies.

Paul Reiser and Rachel Bloom both have extensive experience as comedy writers. Reiser is a seasoned stand-up comedian who created "Mad About You" and has been a staple of film and television for decades. Bloom created, executive produced, wrote, and starred in "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend," on top of all her eclectic comedy experience. So it makes perfect sense to cast Reiser and Bloom as a father-daughter TV writing duo in Steven Levitan's new Hulu comedy series, "Reboot."
In the show, Reiser and Bloom play an estranged father and daughter who are forced to work together on a revival of an early 2000s sitcom called "Step Right Up," which is reminiscent of the cheesiest comedy TV shows, taking cues from the likes of "Full House" and "Step by Step." Throughout the show, Reiser and Bloom found themselves in the middle of hilarious scenes taking place in the fictional show's writers' room,...

There are some names in show business that one can’t help but think are kind of tragic simply because of the way they sound. George Wyner is one of those since one can only imagine what kind of jokes people came up with while using his last name throughout the years. If he managed to find a way to flip it on folks then good for him, but the fact is that kids and even adults can be unbearably cruel if they feel that they can get away with it. But that obviously didn’t stop him from getting into acting,

TV didn’t always upend the horror formula; but when they would add a couple of different colors to the mix, the result was usually at least interesting. Such is the case with Deadly Messages (1985), which throws the whole palette at the screen for a very messy, but entertaining distraction.
Originally broadcast February 21st as part of The ABC Thursday Night Movie, the telefilm could not have picked a worse night to premiere: in addition to CBS’ solid lineup of Magnum, P.I. and Simon & Simon, NBC had the biggest block on the air – The Cosby Show/Family Ties/Cheers/Night Court. Oh well. For the six other people not watching that, they were left with a goofy and breezy murder mystery come Ouija board spookfest.
Let’s pull apart our sun kissed faux TV Guide and see what the spirits have to say:

I will never get enough of When Animals Attack films; I’ve covered quite a few and I see no need to stop my quest for creative critter murder, be they big, small, land based, or aquatic. So it’s about time I turned my attention towards man’s best friend taking a bite (or twelve) of revenge with the imaginatively titled Dogs (1976), a fun and bloody romp through a southwestern state.
Released right in time for the Fourth of July, Dogs (Aka Slaughter) did not do for canines what Jaws did for sharks, even though it has its own Ignorant Authority Figure character on deck; it seems that audiences that year still wanted behemoths like Brucie, which William Girdler’s Grizzly offered with a big old bear hug at the box office. No, our feature offers a more insular suburban nightmare – one in which the domesticated turn deadly.

The true story of a couple helping Jews at the Warsaw Zoo during the second world war has moments of power but also suffers from an uneven script
My favorite moment in Mel Brooks’s Spaceballs is when George Wyner explains the villains’ dastardly plan and Rick Moranis turns directly to the camera and says “everybody got that?” I was reminded of this during The Zookeeper’s Wife when Jan Zabinski, the zookeeper (Johan Heldenbergh), explains to his wife, Antonina (Jessica Chastain), how they can use the tunnels and shelters in their now empty zoo to aid Jews trying to escape the Warsaw ghetto. Hearing his plan, she nods, gives a faraway look and says: “A human zoo.”

When Spaceballs premiered in 1987, four years after Return of the Jedi and with no other Star Wars films on the horizon, critics said director-writer-star Mel Brooks had waited too long to make it and that Lucas's trilogy was too easy a target. Audiences seemed to agree - the film only did moderate box office, taking just $38m on its Us run (with a reported budget of $22m) and finishing 31st in the list of hits for that year. However, it subsequently became a cult favourite on video, Laserdisc and DVD, and was popular enough to receive the full-blown 25th Anniversary treatment (complete with Mel Brooks commentary) on Blu-Ray in 2012.
Needless to say, Spaceballs wasn't Mel Brooks's first foray into parody - he had enjoyed enormous success with his previous films and had already targeted Westerns (Blazing Saddles), horror movies (Young Frankenstein), silent movies (Silent Movie), Hitchcock thrillers (High Anxiety...

The good folks at Scorpion Entertainment have done it again by producing first rate special collector's DVD and Blu-ray editions of a film that most critics dismissed as second rate at the time of its initial release. In this case, the film is "Dogs", which was unleashed (if you pardon the pun) on theaters in 1976, an era in which audiences went mad for movies about animals waging war on humanity. The modestly-budgeted production was shot in southern California on the outskirts of San Diego, with some key scenes filmed at Southwestern University. Directed by Burt Brinckerhoff, who went on to become a popular director of hit TV series, the film is set in an unnamed college in an unnamed town in an unnamed state. Suffice it to say that the area is fairly rural and the townspeople all seem to have connections to the local university. A bearded,...

Because it's been such a long time between new episodes, I nearly didn't know there was a new episode even on this week. Thanks, March Madness. At any rate, I was gleeful to see that Lisbon (Robin Tunney) still has her awesome, and Jane (Simon Baker) seems to remember that she's actually his friend. And look! Recurring character that I actually like – Dr. Steiner (George Wyner). The beauty of the great rolling hills of California are marred with the dead body of Timothy Hartley, who's been inconveniently shot in the stomach and had his throat cut. Also unfortunate, Coroner Dr. Steiner is on hand – yes, he's the same coroner who has shown up in a couple other episodes, and immediately ignites Jane's "mock" reflex – and despite Lisbon's warnings Jane's ready to start screwing with the guy. He even hides a note on the dead body for the express purpose of confounding the poor Doctor.

135 filmmakers and executives have been invited by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences to join its ranks. Recent Oscar nominees and winners such as Vera Farmiga, Anna Kendrick, Mo'Nique, Carey Mulligan, Jeremy Renner, Gabourey Sidibe and Christoph Waltz have been invited to join; but even "Saw's" Tobin Bell and "Avatar's" Zoe Saldana received invites.
New members will be "baptized" in an invitation-only reception in September at the Academy's Fairbanks Center for Motion Picture Study in Beverly Hills.

it's not Tuesday but it's time for a Top Ten anyway... as this is yesterday's news already!
AMPAS used to hide their membership roster like the vote tallies but in the information age, they've opened up. Now we get to see the whole list of new invitees each year. I wonder how they keep they're membership around 6,000 given how many people they invite annual. Maybe enough people reject the offer, stop paying their dues, or pass from this mortal coil each year to balance it out?
You can read the full list of recipients at Indiewire, but as is the Film Experience tradition, we like to pinpoint the newest (potential) members whose future ballots we'd most like to see. So let's have at it.

Members of the academy vote for the annual academy awards.
“The work of these individuals has been appreciated by moviegoers all around the world,” said Academy President Tom Sherak. “The Academy is proud to invite each and every one of them.”
The Academy’s membership policies would have allowed a maximum of 180 new members in 2010, but as in other recent years, the several branch committees endorsed fewer candidates than were proposed to them. Voting membership in the organization has now held steady at just under 6,000 members since...

"Burn After Reading," the previous movie from filmmaking siblings Joel and Ethan Coen, featured a stellar ensemble, including George Clooney, Brad Pitt, John Malkovich, and Tilda Swinton. For their new movie, "A Serious Man," the brothers put together an equally impressive group of actors, even if most of them aren't household names. The casting of Michael Stuhlbarg in the lead role of put-upon physics professor Larry Gopnik is a stroke of genius—not only because the Tony Award nominee (for "The Pillowman") is pitch-perfect in the part but also because, as he is relatively unknown in the film world, the audience sees the character more than the actor. The plot of "A Serious Man" is fairly straightforward, yet the film is one of the Coens' most inscrutable yet. It opens with a parable told in Yiddish before jumping to 1967 Minnesota and focusing on Larry's existential struggle. His wife, Judith, is leaving him for another man.

There are two things present in every Coen Bros film – crime and fools. Usually the fools are the ones committing the crimes and trying (failing) to get away with them. However, it never feels like the brothers have any sympathy towards the “heroes.” On the contrary, it often feels like they enjoy making up idiots so they can point and laugh at them. In this film, though, they seem to finally flip that and reach out a helping hand to Larry Gopnik (Michael Stuhlbarg), obscure as that help may be. The Coens are among the smartest writer/directors working today. Heck, they translated Homer’s Odyssey into a Depression-era Midwestern road trip. Their worldview finds humor in oddities and discomfort – a handshake that lasts a few seconds too long, an unwanted hug, an awkward silence after a bit of stupidity has been uttered. It is in the mundane that the...

Joel and Ethan Coen have an almost chronic aversion to being taken seriously. Their darkest movies are nevertheless laced with black humor, and in interviews, they tend to rebuff the idea that their work is about anything other than what appears on the surface. Even to the actors who have worked with them, their intentions are frequently opaque. One need only glance at "Barton Fink"'s withering portrait of an Odets-ian playwright nattering on about his designs for proletarian theater to see what the Coens think of artists who advertise their themes.
The title of "A Serious Man," then, can only be ironic -- and indeed, the Coens make it nearly impossible to take anyone in the film seriously. Their unlucky protagonist, physics professor Larry Gopnik (Michael Stuhlbarg), is an affable bumbler on whom misfortunes rain like in an unceasing torrent. In short order, he's asked for a divorce, threatened...

Ethan and Joel Coen are back in action, and their latest creation is a comedy entitled "A Serious Man." A first trailer for the film is now online, and as you can see below, it looks both funny and intriguing.
"Man" centers on a guy named Larry Gopnik, a physics professor whose life starts to fall apart when his wife decides to leave him, his lazy brother refuses to move out, his son has problems at school, and his daughter is trying to get a nose job.
Oh, many more things will happen to Larry in the film, and I can't wait to meet this guy and his misadventure on the big screen. Like I mentioned above, this one looks incredibly awkward yet very interesting as well.
Michael Stuhlbarg, Simon Helberg, Richard Kind, Adam Arkin, George Wyner, Sari Lennick, Jessica McManus and Aaron Wolff star. Watch for "A Serious Man" in theaters this October.

Many of us are fascinated by serial killers--what makes them tick, what makes them do what they do and, in our darker moments, whether we could ever carry out the gruesome acts they undertake. Sure, everyone has thought about killing someone, even if it is only for a fleeting moment, but how many of us could actually do it?
And what if, one day, someone walked into your life who saw a spark of himself lurking behind your eyes, and offered to help you recognize that darkness within yourself? Could you do it? With dark humor and a decidedly tongue-in-cheek approach, How To Be A Serial Killer (opening in select bookings this summer; go here for details) examines exactly those questions.
Moving seamlessly through a variety of styles, writer/director Luke Ricci brings us the story of Bart (Criminal Minds’ Matthew Gray Gubler), a fumbling video-store clerk/slacker who is...

If you ask someone what their favorite Sci-fi spoof movie is, chances are Spaceballs will be mentioned. It’s the as-of-yet unmatched parody of Star Wars (and Star Trek, etc.) that just can’t seem to be replaced. It’s not even Mel Brooks’s best work, but it has a stranglehold on the genre. Brooks has a comic sensibility that many filmmakers can only dream of: the timing is perfect, the casting is always top-notch and the scripts have that necessary balance of self-importance and ridiculous notion to keep the entire scramble of a genre in one piece. Unfortunately, Spaceballs seems to grow dimmer as opposed to brighter as time marches on – but that has a lot to do with Mel’s self-professed, basic principle of parody: you can’t parody what you don’t love. Alas, the world has fallen out of love with Star Wars and Spaceballs feels it.
