On the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Genesis", the eternally nervous Lieutenant Reginald Barclay (Dwight Schultz) goes to sickbay insisting he has Terellian Death Syndrome. Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden), finding it's a mild flu, injects him with a synthetic T-cell, activating a gene that would provide him with immunities. Unwittingly, Dr. Crusher also activates every dormant gene in Barclay's body, causing ancient, pre-evolutionary "memory" genes to activate and forcing Barclay to change species. Barclay suddenly evolves into a spider. It spreads, naturally. Nurse Ogawa (Patti Yasutake) evolves into an ape. Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes) evolves into a protohuman. Data (Brent Spiner) evolves into a 1980 Commodore Vic-20.
That last one was a little joke. Data is fine.
"Genesis" has a lot of great makeup effects (by the show's hardworking makeup technician Michael Westmore), but the premise is a little silly, even for "Star Trek." Then again, the science in...

Lee Sung Jin is ready to cook up more Beef.
Backstages at the Golden Globes on Sunday night, the hit Netflix show’s creator revealed that more seasons was always the plan, even if it has heretofore been discussed as a limited series, including tonight as it won the prize for Best Limited Series, Anthology Series, Made for Television Movie.
“We always pitched the season to buyers as an anthology series. There was always going to be new characters,” Jin explained. “Whether it stays limited or turns as an anthology or we continue existing, that’s really up to Netflix. But whatever they decide, I’m definitely ready.”
Jin went on to say that he feels “very fortunate” to be a writer. “There’s so many stories that I still want to write about,” he reflected, “so when they let me know, I’m sure you all will know, as well.

The Primetime Emmys are not necessarily known for honoring projects featuring casts that are primarily minority/people of color. The TV academy has never, for instance, given the Best Drama Series trophy to such a show. The statuette for Best Comedy Series has been won by a series featuring a largely minority cast precisely once: “The Cosby Show” in 1985. But the category of top limited/anthology/miniseries has paid golden tribute to programs with mostly minority casts a handful of times before, helping give Netflix’s “Beef” with its predominantly Asian American lineup a genuine shot to take home the biggest prize.

All season long, the Emmy race for Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actress has been a battle between two front-runners: Niecy Nash-Betts (“Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story”) and Claire Danes (“Fleishman Is in Trouble”). Can anyone stop them from winning the trophy? Based on the combined odds at Gold Derby, the rest of the category is likely to be a mix of actresses from popular series like Maria Bello and Ashley Park (“Beef”), and beloved favorites from series not as much on the radar like Olivia Colman (“Great Expectations”) and Cherry Jones (“Five Days At Memorial”). But it’s still anyone’s game.
After all, recent history has shown us that the television academy has leaned more toward checking off numerous actors from the same series if it has enough buzz. One needs to look no further than last year in this very category, when only two limited series made up...

“Beef” is shaping up to have a great year at this year’s Emmys. The searing, sizzling, sensational Netflix limited series is predicted to be nominated for at least five Emmys, according to our odds chart, but it could earn a whole lot more than that if key supporting players such as Joseph Lee get caught up in the sweep.
“Beef” follows Steven Yeun as Danny Cho and Ali Wong as Amy Lau — two people involved in an incident of road rage that they just can’t let go of. Over the course of the 10-episode series, the two get caught up in a deadly game of one-upmanship as they try to seek revenge and wreak havoc on each other’s lives, dragging themselves and those around them down along the way. One of those people is Lee’s George Nakai, Amy’s stay-at-home husband.

New to the charts and landing at No. 3 in the latest Wrap Report is Netflix’s new comedy-drama “Beef,” which more than one million U.S. households watched during its first four days of streaming. Millennials and Gen Z audiences helped drive viewer interest, overindexing by the largest margin of any age group based on viewership of the premiere. The subsequent two episodes of the miniseries followed suit at No. 4 and No. 7 on the charts, with the premiere episode driving audiences to continue watching.
Featuring a predominantly Asian-American cast, with Ali Wong and Steven Yeun in leading roles, “Beef” generated strong viewership with Asian households overindexing by double digits (13%) compared to the national average for the week of April 5-11. Supporting actors Young Mazino, Joseph Lee, David Choe, Patti Yasutake and “Emily in Paris” star Ashley Park also contributed to the diverse “Beef” cast with Asian representation.

The Netflix series “Beef” is being hailed as one of the best TV shows of 2023 so far, with standout performances in particular from stars Ali Wong and Steven Yeun. Lee Sung Jin, the creator and showrunner of Netflix’s “Beef,” first worked with Steven Yeun and Ali Wong on the animated series “Tuca & Bertie.” But their latest collaboration sees the three reunite to craft a Netflix show along an A24 sensibility. “Beef,” which dropped on the streaming service on Apr. 6, traces the intersecting lives of Yeun’s Danny and Wong’s Amy after the two engage in a vitriolic road rage incident that sets both on a collision course to chaos. “Amy and Danny may differ in gender, class and career path, but they share a self-destructive nihilism that each seems to recognize in the other, even if they can’t articulate it,” writes Variety TV critic Alison Herman.

“What the fuck is happening?”
That was Steven Yeun’s reaction while shooting the cataclysmic climax of “Beef,” which he leads with Ali Wong. The Netflix and A24 dramedy opens plausibly enough with a road-rage scene between Wong’s Amy, an entrepreneur whose easygoing nature masks secret desires, and Yeun’s Danny, a contractor who goes to extremes to obtain what he wants. But that initial conflict drives both to exact bizarre acts of revenge on each other, revealing the darkest corners of their psyches. The result? Chaos. In one scene, Amy masturbates with a gun; in another, Danny urinates all over her bathroom — and that’s just the beginning. Seeded throughout are quiet explorations of the characters’ anger, loneliness and fear.

Inspired by a real-life conflict experienced by creator Lee Sung Jin, “Beef” follows the escalation of a road rage incident between wealthy entrepreneur Amy (Ali Wong) and failing contractor Danny (Steven Yeun), as the pair sets their minds on tearing each other’s lives apart.
Despite the far-fetched amplification of their feud, which begins to implicate Amy and Danny’s families in their subsequent revenge plots, the Netflix comedy series touches on a deeply human sentiment: Amy and Danny are done hiding their true feelings.
“They’re both just really fed up — they’re really fed up and overwhelmed,” Wong told TheWrap, adding that their characters share repressed shame and anger. “It’s just at their threshold point … Sometimes when you see people … they’ve come down from being overwhelmed, but they’re just both like right here, it’s like ripe.”

A cynic might argue that there's an all-too-recognizable formula for popular television shows these days. Spicy premises starring damaged characters with very few likable traits, copious amounts of sex and cheating and violence, and F-bombs galore all feel like time-honored shock tactics to coax jaded, spectacle-starved audiences into uniting around a particular water-cooler show. For every "Succession" or "Yellowjackets," it always seems as if immensely popular shows like "Euphoria" remind us that edginess sells above all else.
"Beef," the latest television project from A24 and Netflix (two studios that certainly know their way around sensationalist productions), won't immediately dispel those surface-level criticisms. The inciting action unfolds after the pettiest of road rage incidents. Co-leads Steven Yeun and Ali Wong curse up a storm in clip-ready segments that seem destined to go viral on social media. The more one watches these characters go about their daily lives, the less there are to root for.

If you’ve ever been in a crowded parking lot, you’ll surely recognize the inciting incident in Netflix’s Beef: A truck nearly backs into an SUV, which honks extravagantly before speeding off. Maybe you’ll even relate to the impulse to do what the cars do next, even if you’ve never done it yourself: The truck chases the SUV down with the reckless abandon of a Fast & Furious racer, skidding into oncoming traffic and barreling over suburban lawns.
But Amy (Ali Wong) and Danny (Steven Yeun), the dueling leads of Beef, take things further still. The encounter precipitates an endless cycle of revenge, during which they deface each other’s property, sabotage each other’s careers, undermine each other’s families. It’s a hilarious premise on its face, and the half-hours fly by as wild twists twists pile up. What’s less expected, however...

Imagine you're having the worst day of your life, drowning in a seemingly never-ending flood of all the most infuriating moments that everyday life has in store for us. You're barely holding it together, plastering a fake smile on your face through it all, and threatening to come apart at the seams at any moment ... and then you nearly get into a car accident in a parking lot with precisely the wrong person. That's the bizarrely mundane premise that kickstarts the action in the joint Netflix and A24 production "Beef," a new television series that sure looks like it needs to be seen to be believed.
Starring Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, the story certainly looks like it takes the phenomenon of road rage incidents and uses it as a jumping-off point to explore some of the darkest aspects of ourselves in as wry and humorous a way as possible.

For a while, all we really knew about the plot of Netflix’s dark comedy series “Beef” was that it followed two strangers who could not let a road rage incident go. Now the trailer is out, and it turns out that that simple plot description pretty much sums it up.
In the trailer, we see the incident – struggling contractor Danny Cho (Steven Yeun) almost backs into wealthy entrepreneur Amy Lau (Ali Wong) in a parking lot, and Amy overreacts – and then the escalation. It starts with a car chase. Then it turns into finding out who each other is. Then it turns into psychological warfare involving Danny peeing on a rug in Amy’s bathroom and Amy threatening him on social media by pointing a handgun at her phone. Their feud takes over their lives, and there will be consequences for them and their families.

"I have a very full life that I'd love to get back to... I'm gonna find you and take what little you have." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a dark comedy revenge series titled Beef, created by TV producer / writer Lee Sung Jin. This looks like amusing, dark, twisted madness! I'm so in. Two people who let a road rage incident burrow into their minds and slowly consume their every thought and action. Hence the title about the "beef" between them. Steven Yeun and Ali Wong co-star as Danny and Amy. The cast includes Joseph Lee, Young Mazino, David Choe, Patti Yasutake, Maria Bello, Ashley Park, Justin H. Min, Mia Serafino, and Remy Holt. Buckle up, friends, because Netflix is here to show you what happens when road rage escalates to unimaginable heights. We all know roads are dangerous places for chance encounters. ‘Beef': Ali Wong and Steven Yeun Embrace Road Rage and Revenge in Trailer for Netflix Series (Video)
Ali Wong and Steven Yeun are not taking the high road in the new Netflix series “Beef,” as evidenced by the comedy series’ first trailer.
After an incident of road rage between failing contractor Danny (Yeun) and self-made entrepreneur Amy (Ali Wong) intensifies their already gut-wrenching anxiety and frustration with the world, the pair become laser-focused on getting revenge on one another as their feud begins to unravel their lives.
“I’ve been hustling my whole life and look where it’s gotten me,” Danny says with disappointment as he checks the stock market while Amy pleads separately, “just make it stop.”
Instead of stopping, however, life throws yet another wrench into Danny and Amy’s lives through a tense encounter on the road that could have easily ended in a colossal crash. Though Amy speeds away and avoids an initial fender bender, she tests fate when she throws Danny...

Steven Yeun and Ali Wong let their tempers spiral wildly out of control in the trailer for A24’s Beef.
In the dark comedy series, Amy (Wong) is a wife and mother who seems to have it all, while Danny (Yeun) is a struggling contractor with downward fortunes, but both are miserable — as cued by the ironic lyrics of The Smashing Pumpkins’ “Today” that plays over the trailer. The two meet acrimoniously in a parking lot and choose to escalate their encounter into an ongoing feud that includes gunplay, attempted arson and defacement of property via urination.
“I have a very full life that I’d like to get back to,” Amy threatens Danny. “I’m going to find you and take what little you have.”
He taunts back: “You’re just a suburban housewife, and now you’re stuck in a life you never wanted.”

"Star Trek: Lower Decks," currently in its third season, took its name from an episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Originally airing on February 7, 1994, The NextGen "Lower Decks" introduced several lower-ranking officers, and depicted what life on the Enterprise-d would look like from their perspective. Trekkies could easily see what space adventures were like for Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), but few knew the inner life of Nurse Ogawa (Patti Yasutake). Also in the episode were a very Boimler-like Ensign Lavelle (Dan Gauthier), the very Tendi-like Ensign Sito (Shannon Fill), and the Vulcan, Ensign Taurik. Bruce Beatty played a character named Ben who was a mere civilian.
The point of "Lower Decks" was to show that lower-ranking officers aren't made savvy to the plots and machinations on the bridge. They don't get to sit in the conference room with the senior staff. They only have to follow orders. Although...

This is one for the C-movie connoisseurs among you.
For those of you who don’t know (you won’t), there’s a new sci-fi spoof on the way called Unbelievable!!!!! It stars Snoop Dogg, 42 former Star Trek actors, Michael Madsen, and a ficus on a skateboard. That ought to answer all of your questions.
In the can for what appears to have been an eternity (some of the footage dates back as far as 2013), the film does at last have a release date. I say at last, but I’m not sure it was at the top of anyone’s list of movie treasure troves. Anyway, if you’re feeling particularly trashy (there’s no shame in that), sit down for Unbelievable!!!!! in an online premiere this August 1st. The premiere will also come with a virtual convention.
