In Tiger Within, a Holocaust survivor befriends a homeless teen (Margot Josefsohn) in Los Angeles in what might be the ’90s. Directed by Rafal Zielinski and written by Gina Wendkos, Tiger Within is a well-intentioned film, touching on antisemitism, hatred, fear, and prejudices, and highlighting the power of forgiveness and kindness.
Those good intentions, plus Ed Asner in his last big screen role, has earned Tiger Within a place in several Jewish film festivals. All that is in its favor but this rambling coming-of-age film is an up-and-down experience, a film that does not always know how best to convey its message and which it sometimes does awkwardly. At times, there is a feeling that the film is not well thought-out or focused, and there are other moments that are simply awkward, even a bit squirm-inducing.

When I was a kid my dad used to have tapes upon tapes of movies he had taped off TV, typically uncut and usually filled with all the “goodies” Case in point, Screwballs. Screwballs was recorded in LP format and came just after Caddyshack. While I’m not entirely sure how I was allowed to watch the uncut, non-television purified version of Caddyshack at as twelve, well I thank my lucky stars that dear old mum never figured it out. At the time I didn’t know that Roger Corman was in anyway associated with the picture. Figures. Giant, low budget monster movies and loosely based Edgar Allen Poe adaptations certainly give way to comedic representations of large ta ta’s pirouetting across the screen like sugar plum fairies on LSD. So for the boobs. For the sense of humor grown by repeated viewings of said film. For the VHS...

After many years of false starts (and announcements), Richard Stanley’s sci-fi/horror cult classic Hardware is finally set to make its U.S. DVD debut, and will appear on Blu-ray as well. Fango got the scoop that Severin Films will release the film on extras-packed discs this fall.
Hardware stars Stacey Travis as a woman living in a postapocalyptic future who is given some robot scraps by scavenger Dylan McDermott; the pieces soon reconfigure themselves into a murderous robot, with plenty of bloodshed ensuing. Trimmed to avoid an X rating by original distributor Miramax for its 1990 release, the movie will be presented in uncut, uncensored form, transferred from Stanley’s personal print. Extras will include:
• Audio commentary
• Deleted scenes
• Behind-the-scenes footage
• Stanley’s never-before-seen hour-long Super 8 version
And possibly more; retail price info and cover art are coming soon. “They say, ‘Once in every generation a plague shall fall upon you,...
