Accelerating climate change and its far-flung effects have fast become the most important story in the news cycle. But that isn’t always the stuff that gets talked about or tweeted — or the biggest ratings.
Part of the issue? Shifts in the environment happen gradually over time, not usually in a violent, shocking moment that can be captured by cameras. Increasingly frequent bursts of severe weather are changing that dynamic, but most news outlets have tried to address the story with special reports and new teams of reporters that are add-ons to their journalism infrastructure.
Now the Weather Channel is making climate change a bigger part of its overall focus. The cable network over the next several months plans to infuse climate coverage into its morning, afternoon and even entertainment programs in a way that Nora Zimmett, the outlet’s chief content officer, believes will make for reports that audiences...

“Turn around, don’t drown!” Standing in a street with rapidly rising waters, The Weather Channel meteorologist Chris Warren is imploring drivers to steer clear of flash floods. Moments later, as if to prove his point, a car floats by. Only, Warren isn’t risking his life to record the network’s latest extreme weather segment. Instead, he’s being taped in front of a green screen in the network’s studios in Atlanta, and the dangerous flooding is being added via visual effects in real time.
The flash flood PSA is just the latest segment coming out of The Weather Channel’s Immersive Mixed Reality team, which has been producing similar videos about tornadoes, storm surges, wildfires and climate change. “It’s all about getting away from the flat map,” says weather presentation director Michael Chesterfield. Adds Warren, “It illustrates what we can’t always show in person.”

The Weather Channel is a locomotive in Entertainment Studios’ portfolio of businesses generating sizable cash-flow profit, enlarging entrée to advertisers because of its heft and, in what is often unappreciated by outsiders, serving as a media-technology engine.
To keep the Weather Channel cable network relevant in an era when information is readily available online and via personal devices, the linear basic cable network jazzes up its presentation with flashy media tech. Weather Channel serves up immersive mixed reality and augmented reality — layering digital images into real-world presentations as in in-studio weather telecasts.
The Weather Channel also delivers a dose of story-telling, weather news in broader context and connections to experts, which keeps audiences tuned in, says Janice Arouh, who is president-network distribution and marketing at Entertainment Studios Networks. The audience “wants to know more than just it’ll be sunny and 83 degrees,” Arouh says. “They want a deep dive into...

The Weather Channel just took a Sharpie to its live TV organizational chart. Angie Massie, former CNN showrunner for “Rick's List” and ‘The Newsroom with Brooke Baldwin,” has been named senior executive producer of morning line-up, including Sam Champion's “Amhq.” She will replace Scott Warren, who is leaving the organization. “I know I speak for everyone and especially the ‘Amhq’ team when I thank Scott for the energy and heart he brought to the launch of ‘Amhq,'” Nora Zimmett, senior vice president of Programing, said in a Friday internal memo. “His efforts were a key factor in our being able to launch such.
