Do two movies make a trend? Well, if so, black-and-white versions of blockbuster movies is now a thing. After George Miller brought “Mad Max: Fury Road” back to cinemas and home video in a black and chrome cut, James Mangold is doing the same with “Logan” in a version known as “Logan Noir.”
The director has dropped a trailer for the monochrome version, which gives you all the action and Johnny Cash‘s cover of Nine Inch Nails‘ “Hurt” which you’ve seen before, but given more moody gravitas in black-and-white.

Illegitimate children, secrets, lies, deception… The current Deadpool 2099 story sounds an awful lot like the past 30 years of The Bold and the Beautiful. Considering most comic books are really just undercover soap operas with tights, this shouldn’t surprise anyone. Nonetheless, Deadpool #25 brings the Wilson family drama to a close in this double-sized issue.
So, what’s the beef? Warda Wilson – Deadpool’s daughter – is still Po’ed at her pops for refusing to tell her where her mother, Shiklah, is. She issues him the following ultimatum: bring me my mommy or I’ll unleash holy hell on Madison Star Garden. Deadpool being Deadpool doesn’t do things simply, and attempts to reason with daddy’s little princess in his own peculiar way. When that doesn’t go down well, however, he’s forced to stop her with some help from his friends and Warda’s half-sister, Ellie. But can...

We’ve heard this for a while: we’re living in a Golden Age of superhero movies. In the minds of some jaded moviegoers, however, we live in an age of oversaturation of the genre. As great as the Marvel Studios movies are, there is little denying that most of them come across as pretty samey. Now, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. In the grand scheme of things, audiences usually want more of the same with slight differences, and Marvel Studios has been pretty great on delivering on this expectation.
That being said, I don’t want to downplay the steps Marvel Studios has taken to ensure the longevity of the genre. Yes, their films tend to be quite similar at their core in structure, tone, and overall feel (with some exceptions), but they’ve spread them out over various genres to make them a bit more different than your standard superhero flick.

Hugh Jackman looks haggard and worn down in the new trailer for Logan, which is supposedly the last movie starring the actor as the Marvel character Wolverine. "The world is not the same as it was," he intones wearily at the start of the clip. He appears to be one of the last X-Men left, living in some sort of isolated smelting plant and nearly ready to call it quits. Johnny Cash's sobering cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt" plays in the background, adding to the bleakness.

"Charles, the world is not the same as it was. Mutants... they're gone now." Featuring Johnny Cash's powerful cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt," the official trailer for the new Wolverine movie, Logan, shows a world where mutants are nearly extinct, and only one of them still has time.
Directed by James Mangold from a screenplay by Michael Green and Scott Frank and James Mangold (based on a story by David James Kelly and Mangold), Logan is produced by Simon Kinberg, Hutch Parker, and Lauren Shuler Donner. The film's cast includes Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Richard E. Grant, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant, and Dafne Keen. For the majority of kids in the early 1990s, particularly a sheltered Texas suburbanite like myself, “goth” was an abstraction—an amalgam of ideas borrowed from Nine Inch Nails videos, The Lost Boys, and whatever mall store sold Manic Panic before Hot Topic achieved manifest destiny. Gadzooks, probably. Jurassic World is fine. Massive blockbuster earnings aside, it’s neither contrived enough to feel like another lesser sequel nor original enough to stray too far from Spielberg’s 1993 original. That uneasy cradle — between ingenuity and brand loyalty — is where tentpole franchises and their music have come to rest. With Furious 7, Atlantic Records threw dub step and electro-house music onto another collection of so-so promotional hip-hop. Henry Jackman and Matthew Margeson only squeak out brief homages to John Barry rather than admit how indebted to Roger Moore Bond Kingsman: The Secret Service really is. Even Danny Elfman and Brian Tyler never stray far from Alan Silvestri’s original “Transformers meets Mission Impossible” theme in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Blockbuster movie composition is, like the studio system in 2015, sturdy, safe and kinda boring. Michael Giacchino’s score for Jurassic World is the latest to fit the mold. Like the movie itself,...

Taylor Swift fans were bowled over this week when the singer debuted the music video for her new, previously unannounced single "Shake It Off," but fans of the format were doubly surprised by who directed it: Mark Romanek, the helmer of some of the most iconic music videos ever made, including Johnny Cash's "Hurt," Fiona Apple's "Criminal," and the Nine Inch Nails clip "Closer." These days, Romanek is more focused on feature films (his big-screen work includes One Hour Photo and Never Let Me Go, and he's currently circling The Overlook Hotel, a prequel to The Shining set up at Warner Bros.), but "Shake It Off" is the latest in a music-video resurgence for the director: After eight years away from the medium, he directed last year's Jay Z clip "Picasso Baby" and the music video for U2's big Super Bowl single "Invisible." Clearly, Romanek's busier than ever right now,...

The music video to U2's "Invisible" is out, and it may be a little sneak-peak into the band's aspirations for their next live tour. Bono's light-up, drop down mic has a big emphasis out of the black and white, shot by Mark Romanek; it's the rock band's first go-round with the director, who helmed a few little ditties including Nine Inch Nails' "Closer," Johnny Cash's "Hurt" and Michael Jackson's "Scream." So, yeah, the man loves his light. The bulb boards soar with movement behind the band and frontman Bono is able to navigate the catwalk in a sea of waving arms....

Someone—or, more likely, several people—at the Associated Press made an embarrassing mistake this weekend when writing up Nine Inch Nails’ headlining set at Philadelphia’s Made In America festival. The uncredited writer of the review notes that “Nin closed the night with a slow and smoky cover of Johnny Cash’s ‘Hurt,’ which earned nonstop cheers from the crowd,” including a "Yeah, Trent!" from a burly man in the audience. That’s probably an apt description, except for, you know, “Hurt” being written and originally performed by Nin, and it was Cash who did its well-received cover shortly ...

Philadelphia — Nine Inch Nails closed the second night of the "Budweiser Made In America" festival with a set that captured the audience – although the crowd was not nearly as large as Beyonce's the night before.
Trent Reznor and his band mates performed 19 songs at the Jay-z-curated festival on Philadelphia's Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Reznor didn't hold back: drenched in sweat and holding the microphone close, he sang his band's rock hits and tracks from the group's new album, "Hesitation Marks," out Tuesday.
He emerged onstage in all black while lights flashed behind him during songs like "Closer" and "Head Like a Hole." Nin went on at 9:30 p.m., minutes after DJ-producer Calvin Harris electrified at another stage with his familiar hits "We Found Love," "I Need Your Love" and others. Some concertgoers left after Harris' top-notch performance, and the crowd was not packed when Nin performed, though it filled up throughout the show.

Lollapalooza 2013 kicked off Friday afternoon in Chicago with only brief rain, hordes of bare bodies and music that ranged from tremendous to truly awful -- in other words, it was a pretty typical Day 1.
Story continues below
The (presumably ticketed) fest-goers who arrived early when gates opened at 11 a.m. were among the first Lolla fans to check out the damn-near impenetrable 8-foot steel fence erected to keep jumpers out of the 2013 fanfare.
Early morning rains had made a mess of the field, so officials were spreading mulch around the soggiest parts of the park and taping off others to avoid and all-out mud mess.
Things proceeded on with relative order until a brief rain shower soaked Grant Park a little after 2 p.m. Despite the downpour, the fields didn't quite devolve into the all-out mudslide like they had in years past. After the 2012 storm evacuation mess, this year Lolla...

Even before Mark Romanek yelled "Action!" on "One Hour Photo," his debut feature film, he was already a trailblazer behind the camera. The filmmaker had made a name for himself as a music video director, helming iconic spots for Lenny Kravitz ("Are You Gonna Go My Way"), Nine Inch Nails ("Closer"), Madonna ("Bedtime Stories"), Michael Jackson ("Scream"), Fiona Apple ("Criminal"), Johnny Cash ("Hurt") and much, much more. His videos were bold and found Romanek able to easily switch genres musically and stylistically without batting an eye, delivering evocative spots that both defined the director and the artists he worked with. But when it came to his feature film, he largely kept the flashy stylization at bay. "One Hour Photo," starring Robin Williams playing a photo developer at a mega chain who develops an obsession with his favorite customers, is an exercise in control, with the thrills and dread coming as...

Electronic music has been all the craze lately. Understanding the appeal of this futuristic genre can be mindless for some, but also a struggle for others. We’ll take the latter part mostly due to the lack of vulnerability in the beat provoking songs. Yes, electronic music can make you free of worries, losing yourself in its tempos, but unguarded and sensual vocals, not beside a synthesized beat, can have you feeling exposed, which is unlike any emotion. So, on that vulnerable path, we introduce you to Sandi Thom. Before all things started going to hell before anything even began, I knew The Crow remake was never supposed to happen. Never mind that I really, really, really hate remakes, reboots, revamps, or whatever, because, if the original classic was good, then leave it alone!
'28 Days Later' director drops out of 'The Crow' remake
However, Hollywood is unoriginal and no one can think of any good scripts to write, so remake hell it is. But here's why Relativity Media should take a hint and just completely drop The Crow reboot altogether. Let's forget the fact that they just lost a director, have no leading man and most of the actors hyped to be in the script have dropped out. I'll turn a blind eye to that right now and give you the real reasons why this project is an utter and complete disgrace.

Mark Romanek is no stranger to making you dance in your seat when you’re watching MTV — or any other channel, for that matter. The director behind those infectious iPod commercials, including the colorful, rocking U2 “Vertigo” spot, had millions of Vma viewers (12.4 million, to be exact) grooving along with the now-famous trio of hip-hop-happy hamsters (and a group of equally skilled robots who couldn’t resist a catchy beat) in the latest Kia Soul ad which aired during the awards show last night.

Man, that poor Logan just can't catch a break.
After the crushing news that Darren Aronofsky dropped out of the director's chair, it now looks like our ideal replacement, Mark Romanek, has followed suit and won't be helming 'The Wolverine.' For those unfamiliar, Romanek is the director of 'One Hour Photo,' 'Never Let Me Go' and some of the best music videos of all-time, from Nine Inch Nails' 'Closer' to Johnny Cash's 'Hurt.'
Maybe we shouldn't have gotten our hopes up in the first place, but we think Romanek would have been a perfect choice to help people forget about 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' and give everyone's favorite mutant the hardcore treatment he deserves. But alas ...
Hit the jump to see what Romanek had to say about why he ducked out and what he thought of the script.

[1] Mark Romanek may not be in the top tier of feature directors just yet, but among music video directors, he's an icon. Remember the dark sultriness of Fiona Apple's "Criminal" video? Or the controversy surrounding Nine Inch Nails' "Closer"? How about the heartbreaking intimacy of Johnny Cash's "Hurt"? Those are just three of his best-known works. Romanek's other musical clients include artists as varied and notable as Madonna, Weezer and Jay-z. Revisit those videos and many, many others in this video of higlights by Romanek fan Nino Del Padre after the jump. [via Movie City News [2]] Watching these videos, it's obvious Romanek has a gift as a visual storyteller. He has an impressive flexibility that allows him to do vibrant and upbeat just as compellingly as he does still and uncanny. Romanek's won numerous awards for his work, including Grammys for Michael & Janet Jackson's "Scream," Janet Jackson's "Got 'Til It's Gone,...

Considering that indie icons Arcade Fire walked away with the Album of the Year prize at Sunday night's (February 13) 53rd Grammy Awards, perhaps the biggest news in the indie rock universe came from the United Kingdom. In the wee hours of Monday morning (February 14), Radiohead announced that not only was their new album completely done and would be called The King of Limbs, but it would also be available for a download this Saturday, February 19. The sudden announcement echoes the way Radiohead's In Rainbows first got introduced to the universe back in 2007, when the band made the announcement that they were done with the album and then released it on the very same day (though this time around you'll actually have to pay full price for the album, rather than pay what you want).
Radiohead's latest album represents a continuing trend in the music world. In an age when early...

Yesterday the world was treated to the first official glimpse of goth detective Lisbeth Salander Version 2 as played by Rooney Mara in David Fincher’s adaptation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
Sony Pictures have released a few more arty images from a fashion shoot taken with W magazine showing off Rooney Mara in a variety of poses. She looks like she the guitarist from the Nine Inch Nails music vid for March of the Pigs to me. And Salander in a little ballerina type skirt? I don’t think so!
Miss Mara has been speaking to W magazine and gave a snippet information about how she initially thought she wouldn’t be able to compete with Noomi Rapace’s performance:

Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday are waiting for you. Down with envelope-pushing dance pop? If you're a big Edm fan and you haven't yet heard of Skrillex, you may want to listen up. The La native has rapidly taken the electronica world by storm, earning praise from peers and fans alike.
"He's taking over," Deadmau5 told MTV News in a recent interview. "I think he's going to outdo me. I think he's going to be the first artist on Beatport to eat my lunch and take over the top 10. I don't think anyone in Beatport history has ever done it, but if he does it, I'll be so proud of him, the little goblin!"
While he didn't quite capture all 10 spots, Skrillex did, at one point, own an impressive eight of the 10 — no small feat for a guy who until 2007 was more commonly known as Sonny Moore,...

30 Seconds To Mars‘ racy, 13-minute short film “Hurricane” is now up at MTV.com (and still not really Sfw), but singer Jared Leto says he almost gave up on making an edit the networks would touch. “I had always planned on having an explicit version and then a version that was not so explicit,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “The version that we were trying to get on broadcast is not the explicit version, and that’s still having a really difficult time.” The final version, which has the band menaced by profound iconography and violent men in leather masks while Jared applies various straps and constraints to a female partner (oh mama), is also graced by Leto’s photographer pal Terry Richardson and subliminal shots of erotic naughtiness, some covered by red bars or stills reading “Censored,” a la Nine Inch Nails‘ “Scene Missing” captions in “Closer.” Leaking a memo...

Mark Romanek, director of One Hour Photo and Never Let Me Go, is shooting the pilot for “Locke & Key,” an adaptation of the comic book for a possible television series at Fox.
Romanek, who started by directing music videos like Nine Inch Nails’ “Closer,” Johnny Cash’s “Hurt” cover, and Michael Jackson’s uber-expensive “Scream,” brings even more clout to the spooky, supernatural show. According to Deadline, the pilot is being produced by Steven Spielberg and the Star Trek/Transformers writing partners Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci. The comic was created by Joe Hill, Stephen King’s son.
The pilot episode tells the story of Nina Locke (played by Miranda Otto) and her three children, Tyler, Kinsey, and Bodie as they recover from the murder of their husband/father, Rendell. In order to rebuild their lives, the Lockes move into Keyhouse, a family mansion passed down through generations with mysterious powers.

On Sunday night, I accompanied my good friend, Joe Mande, to go to a Brokencyde concert in South Hackensack, New Jersey. Who is Brokencyde? Don’T Worry About It! Honestly, never worry about that. They are a nightmare scream band. Joe had to see the show as part of an ongoing segment he does for Videogum.com called Taking One For the Team. This is a feature in which Joe has to go to something awful to write about it and then he’s like, “Noah, do you want to come, too?” and then I go and it is the worst. For this show, there were five opening bands. Five Opening Bands! That’s too many opening bands. But the last opening band… was absolutely mind blowing. They are called Millionaires and they are basically two Snookies that became Ke$ha. And while they certainly are better than Ke$ha,...

It’s no surprise to comic fans that Hollywood movers and shakers saw big potential in “Locke & Key” as a television series rather than a motion picture. Fox network already granted its brewing adaptation a pilot in the hope of touting it as a summer series, and now they've given Dw Publishing’s still-unwinding supernatural thriller another vote of confidence by landing a director and star.
As reported by Deadline, director Mark Romanek is in negotiations to make his TV debut with the project. Romanek, who emerged directing striking music videos for acts like Nine Inch Nails and Michael Jackson among others, also has to his credit the films “One Hour Photo” and this year’s “Never Let Me Go”.
Seemingly more set in stone is the news that actress Miranda Otto ("The Lord Of The Rings") will headline the cast as Nina Locke, mother of children Tyler, Kinsey and Bode,...

For many artists, a debut album can offer the purest statement of purpose, but for the bands that popularized industrial music, first albums typically served as prologue to a story that wouldn’t develop until later. Although Pretty Hate Machine, Nine Inch Nails’ 1989 debut, bore more of a resemblance to what the band became than, say, Ministry’s cringe-worthy 1983 new-wave debut, it still differs markedly from The Slip, two decades later. Newly remastered with a bonus track (a cover of Queen’s “Get Down Make Love,” a B-side and former staple of Nin’s live sets), Pretty Hate ...

Fox has hired the highly acclaimed filmmaker Mark Romanek to direct the small screen adaptation of Joe Hill's graphic novel Locke & Key. He is currently in talks to take on the pilot episode for the series. The story follows Nina Locke and her three children as they move to Keyhouse, the family home in Lovecraft, Ma to recover from an unspeakable horror. Keyhouse is a mysterious New England mansion with fantastic and transformative keys that are hidden inside its walls. The keys are being are being sought after by a sinister and relentless creature with ties to the family's past who will stop at nothing to accomplish its goals.
The series is being produced by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, War of the Worlds) is writing the script. Romanek makes a great addition to this creative team, and I'm excited to see how this series ends up.

Dismayed by the way the professional game is heading, a group of Manchester United fans set up their own club five years ago. They don't have a ground and their striker is a tiler on £80 a week, but already Fc United is the focus of passionate local support. Here, an astonished fan charts their remarkable rise from small-fry idealists to Fa Cup giant-killers
It was a sight Manchester has seen many times before. Hordes of fans wearing red, white and black scarves, piling off a late-night train at Victoria, after a November night fixture away from home. Triumphant chants reverberating around the station forecourt. Dancing football players in red pictured on the front page of the newspaper the next day. Not unfamiliar stuff in a city that sees itself as the "new Milan" of world football. But there was one crucial difference.
This time the headlines made no reference to the reds of Manchester United.

For an animated, big-budget Disney film like “Tangled,” there’s a surprising amount of death metal and explicit sexual lyrics.
Ok, we’re kidding. You can guess the reality though when Mandy Moore stars in a Disney updating of the classic Brothers Grimm tale “Rapunzel.”
While still maintaining an airy, happy-go-lucky vibe throughout, the “Tangled” soundtrack mainly eschews pop songs and divides its length equally among Alen Menken’s score and something more approximating the soundtrack to a Broadway musical.
Moore, predictably, handles the bulk of the vocals and her performances on “When Will My Life Begin?” and “Healing Incantation” will please any 8-year-old girl (or strange boy). Her powerful, yet sing-songy, timbre is well-suited for this role, though Donna Murphy (as Mother Gothel) and Zachary Levi (as Rapunzel paramour Flynn Rider) admirably hold their own.
