Ghost hunters will find more than they bargained for on Halloween in upcoming genre-bender The Unearthly. Per Deadline, the indie sci-fi horror comedy has found its lead in star and producer Patrick Warburton.
Josh Sternfeld (Fortress: Sniper’s Eye) is set to direct The Unearthly for Centerboro Productions, with production scheduled to begin early this year in Connecticut.
In The Unearthly, “a team of paranormal investigators live-stream a ‘Halloween Special’ ghost hunt of a notorious haunted mansion, finding the source of the evil at hand to be far more deadly than they ever could have imagined. Warburton plays Tank McCrary, an old school paranormal investigator in the style of Ed Warren and Peter James, who hosted over 20 live television specials in the ’90s before an incident ruined his career. Stubborn and egotistical, he likes to do things his way. He doesn’t trust technology, relying on his analog tape recorder,...

Fortress was one of the few recent Bruce Willis films that was actually good, And now the sequel, Fortress: Sniper’s Eye has arrived. But while much of the cast is the same, Josh Sternfeld replaced James Cullen Bressack as director. Bressack also did a good job with Willis’ Survive the Game which begs the question if this film will suffer for not having him on board?
Fortress: Sniper’s Eye picks up in Russia two weeks after the end of the first film. A couple of goons are torturing Sasha and filming it to send to her husband. Or at least they are until Robert walks in and beats the crap out of both of them. Then we...

"I must make you suffer." Lionsgate has revealed a trailer for yet another straight-to-the-trash Bruce Willis action movie, which he keeps churning out more & more of recently. This latest one is Fortress: Sniper's Eye, apparently a sequel to the action cyber-thriller Fortress from last year; they found a different director for this one. Which didn't seem to help much. Retired CIA agent Robert Carter Michaels and his son Paul have committed themselves to rebuilding their relationship after their epic last encounter spent protecting the highly secure secret base: the Fortress. When Paul's wife, Melissa, is abducted, he and Robert embark on a deadly journey through the rugged mountains in hopes of saving her. The movie stars Jesse Metcalfe, Bruce Willis, Chad Michael Murray, Ser'Darius Blain, Kelly Greyson, Natalie Burn, Welker White, and Gabrielle Haugh. As forgettable as they come. I think even nodded off watching the trailer. Here's the official...

The Skin I Live In (15)
(Pedro Almodóvar, 2011, Spa) Antonio Banderas, Elena Anaya, Jan Cornet, Marisa Paredes. 120 mins.
Almodóvar's silky skills and supreme confidence tempt respectable audiences into an elegantly twisted tale of surgical obsession that few others could pull off. It's best not to spell things out too much about this; suffice to say Banderas's project to create a new form of skin, with Anaya his captive guinea pig, doesn't go where you'd expect.
As usual, there's a lot going on beneath the surface.
One Day (12A)
(Lone Scherfig, 2011, Us) Anne Hathaway, Jim Sturgess, Rafe Spall. 108 mins.
Fans might not have had Hathaway's migratory trans-Pennine accent in mind when they fell in love with David Nicholls's calendar-crossing odd-couple romance on paper, and the equally wayward period details detract even further. A pity, given the promising material, but Grazia readers will lap it up just the same.

A look at what's new on DVD today:
"Meskada" (2010)
Directed by Josh Sternfeld
Released by Anchor Bay Entertainment
When this thriller premiered at Tribeca this past spring, Alison Willmore wrote, "the second film from writer/director Josh Sternfeld ("Winter Solstice") has ambitions reaching beyond being a straightforward police procedural," though critics, including her, were mixed about the end result. Nick Stahl and Rachel Nichols star as small-town sleuths who investigate a botched home invasion case that claims the life of a young child in an affluent community and enflames class divisions when the main suspects are from the poorer community nearby. Grace Gummer, Meryl Streep's second daughter to go into the family profession, makes her film debut.

Title: Meskada Directed by: Josh Sternfeld Starring: Nick Stahl (Mirrors 2, Carnivale), Rachel Nichols (Charlie Wilson’s War, Conan), and Kellan Lutz (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Warrior) Sometimes just simply watching everyday life can be the perfect inspiration for screenwriters and directors who want to perfectly reflect the conflicts of small-towns across America. As Josh Sternfeld, who wrote and directed the new crime-drama-thriller ‘Meskada,’ thought of the fights over territory, the class system and human rights across the country, he visited small towns throughout the U.S. to witness their everyday way of life. What came out of his journey was not only a showcase of [...]...

This review originally ran as part of our coverage of the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival.
Like many a film that has its premiere at Tribeca, "Meskada" is earnest and unremarkable, with a cast stacked high with semi-known actors, like Nick Stahl as small-town detective Noah Cordin, or Rachel Nichols from "Alias" as the sheriff's deputy partnered with him on a sensitive case, or some guy from "The Black Donnellys," or some guy from "Twilight," or "Boondock Saint" Norman Reedus. Its ace in the hole, in terms of publicity hooks, is that it's the film debut of Grace Gummer, daughter of Meryl Streep.
To give credit where it's due, the film, the second from writer/director Josh Sternfeld ("Winter Solstice"), has ambitions reaching beyond being a straightforward police procedural, and they lead to glimmers of something interesting that never quite materializes. Cordin is pulled in to investigate a home robbery gone wrong...

For his backwoods crime thriller Meskada, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival this past spring, director Josh Sternfeld rounded up an enviable young cast, including Twilight's Kellan Lutz, Meryl Streep's daughter Grace Gummer, Nick Stahl (In the Bedroom), Rachel Nichols (Star Trek), and the always-interesting Norman Reedus. But that's only half the battle. We asked the filmmaker to share his story as a means of inspiration for aspiring filmmakers out there: the film's five-year odyssey from idea to screen is not atypical these days, and Sternfeld takes us through his journey from 'Talking About It' to 'Actually Doing It.' Sound familiar? Read on... Today is Sunday, November 21, and in nine days I will fly to Los Angeles, sleep on my friend's couch, and attend the theatrical premiere of Meskada - the police drama I've spent five years making. Trailer for “Meskada”, a small-town murder mystery from writer/director Josh Sternfeld (“Winter Solstice”). It’s one of those under-the-radar crime films that could be really, really good, or kinda average. I honestly can’t tell from this trailer, though one thing’s for sure: Rachel Nicholas as a brunette is really, really strange. Nick Stahl looks appropriately intense, though. Meskada follows a small-town detective named Noah Cordin as he struggles to solve the brutal murder of a boy in the peaceful, affluent town of Hilliard. The killers left behind no clues at the crime scene, with the exception of a scrap of paper leading Cordin back to his hometown of Caswell. Here, Cordin and county detective Leslie Spencer consult with Cordin’s old friends, all of whom are suffering from the economic troubles that have plunged Caswell into near-destitution. As their search fails to turn up a suspect, feverish...

A low budget indie that opened at Tribeca earlier this year, has been picked up Red Flag Releasing for a December 3rd theatrical and debut day-and-date release. After previously directing the family drama Winter Solstice, Josh Sternfeld tackled Meskada, a crime thriller starring Kellan Lutz, Nick Stahl, Rachel Nichols, Jonathan Tucker, Norman Reedus and Grace Gummer (Mamie Gummer's younger sis). Small town detective, Noah Cordin, must solve the burglary-turned-homicide of a three-year-old boy in an affluent suburb of Meskada County. Following his instincts and a tiny shred of evidence, Noah crosses district lines to Caswell, where he grew up, where times are tough and questions are not welcome. When Noah’s investigation brings about nothing but more suspicion, local politics threaten the survival of every Caswell resident by halting plans for a new factory that would create hundreds of much needed jobs and save their town. The dead boy’s mother,...

Christine Vachon might have been a pioneer for women working as independent film producers, but there are a good bunch that are joining the ranks. I'd be tempted to say that NYC-based producer Jen Gatien also comes from the school of hard knocks, as she was the driving force behind a pair of films which weren't the easiest to bring to market in the Cannes selected Abel Ferrara's Chelsea on the Rocks and the controversial Sundance drama Hounddog. A producer who moonlights between producing some edgy documentary films and feature films with emerging filmmaker talents, you could say that with her current cluster of projects (in all stages of production) that this counts as her true breakout year, but Gatien has been involved in the indie biz since her internship beginnings about a decade ago at October Films (the roots of the Focus Features' shingle). Gatien's DeerJen Films...

Yes, Grace Gummer looks a hell of a lot like her mother. That might not be such a big deal if she were an astrophysicist or a pediatrician. But Gummer, 23, is an actor, one whose first feature is now playing at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. Her mother just happens to be one of the most important film actors of the last 40 years."The arts have always been in and around my life," Gummer says. "My dad is a sculptor. My brother is a talented musician."What she gracefully avoids mentioning is that her mother is Meryl Streep—which makes "Meskada," a rural police drama in which Gummer has a meaty supporting role, something of a Tribeca curiosity. Though the part—a take-no-guff barmaid with romantic ties to a killer—is her first on the big screen, Gummer is no neophyte. She first drew notice in 2008 with her...

Josh Sternfeld admits he wasn't the likeliest guy to tackle a crime drama set in a small town. He's a city guy and a relatively new director, whose first feature Winter Solstice was a small-scale family story set in New Jersey. But unbowed, Sternfeld didn't just write Meskada as a story about murder, family, and class tensions between a rich town and a poorer town, and one cop-- played by Nick Stahl-- who is caught between them. Meskada is premiering at this year's Tribeca Film Festival; you can read more about Meskada in my review, then check out below the interview I did with Sternfeld and Grace Gummer, who makes her film acting debut as a bartender in the poorer town of Caswell, where she inadvertently winds up at the center of the murder mystery linking the two towns. Beautiful in its rawness, Meskada feels shabby, right down to the quality of film. That's simply one way director Josh Sternfeld (Winter Solstice, Tff '04) draws you into the themes of poverty and struggle in his tale of two towns located in Meskada County: one rich, one very poor. The contrast between these American communities is stark: Hilliard is affluent, Caswell on the brink of destitution. After a young boy is accidentally murdered during a burglary in Hilliard, a clue leads the investigation to Detective Noah Corbin's own hometown of Caswell, on the other side of the county. Sternfeld says for months he mulled over the idea of doing a police drama, but wanted to figure out a way to bring something unique to the story. At the time, the director said he was reading a lot about wars between the Native Americans and the first English colonists. "It was...

The Tribeca Film Festival is just days away now and New Yorkers are starting to prepare for their city's annual celebration of film. There are some big names this year, starting with "Shrek Forever After," the (supposed) final chapter in the series, which opens the fest this year.
Today I'm here to showcase "Meskada," a thriller from writer/director Josh Sternfeld starring Nick Stahl, Rachel Nichols and "Twilight" star Kellan Lutz. The story follows a small-town detective investigating the death of a young child, killed during a home robbery. Not that you get a sense of that here; what you do get a sense of is Lutz, shirtless. Enjoy, ladies.
