Pinocchio scored the night’s final prize for Best Special Make-Up Effects in a Feature at the virtual ceremony held Saturday.
On the TV side, the marquee winners included Bridgerton, The Crown, The Queen’s Gambit, The Mandalorian, Schitt’s Creek and Westworld.

As soon as Makeup Head Angie Wells received Emerald Fennell’s script for “Promising Young Woman,” she had notes to make. She noticed the different personas that Carey Mulligan’s Cassie goes through, especially when “she’s doing her hits; it wasn’t soft and pretty.”
Fennell’s film follows Cassie, who by day works in a coffee shop, and by night turns into avenging angel as she seeks revenge on the men who have caused her best friend unimaginable pain.
Wells broke down her process behind crafting the looks for Cassie, and reveals she gave the looks nicknames. “When she’s in the bar with a mini dress and her hair is pulled up into a ponytail, that’s the ‘Homemade Kardashian’ look.” She adds, “I wanted to make it sexual and inviting, but make it look like she did it herself.”

When period looks onscreen seem effortless, it reflects the mastery of the craft. In “Sylvie’s Love,” set for release on Christmas Day via Amazon Studios, the artisans’ extensive research behind Tessa Thompson’s ’50s and ’60s hair, makeup and styling remain unnoticeable.
Costumes worn by the titular Sylvie were heavily inspired by the iconic 1950s outfits worn by Audrey Hepburn, said designer Phoenix Mellow during Wednesday night’s virtual screening and Q&a from Amazon Studios. Mellow shared that her favorite look for Sylvie is, in fact, the tailored blue dress from Chanel, the brand adored by Hepburn in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.”
According to hair designer Carla Farmer, Thompson’s bob cut with short bangs for scenes set in the ’50s was also inspired by Hepburn. To capture change over time, Farmer styled Thompson’s shoulder-length hair for scenes set in the ’60s, giving it extra volume and curls.

Actors wear a lot of makeup on set, but seemingly maintain a flawless complexion—how is this possible? While you may think that on-set makeup artists are only concerned with applying makeup, you've got it all wrong. In what’s shaping up to be a standout year for female filmmakers, Dee Rees is one of several unapologetic storytellers toppling the patriarchy and earning critical acclaim. For Rees, that’s with Mudbound, a harrowing yet beautifully directed story of two families as they try to survive in the Jim Crow South during and after World War II.
Adapted from Hillary Jordan’s 2008 novel of the same name, Mudbound is a remarkable reflection of America, despite taking place in the late 1940s. “I think people are going to be able to really see themselves in this film,” Rees tells Et.
Starring Carey Mulligan, Garrett Hedlund, Mary J. Blige and Jason Mitchell, the Netflix film shows the interconnected lives of a black family (the Jacksons) and a white family (the McAllans) living and working on the same farmland as both see relatives return home from the war. Rees says it’s the layers of citizenship, posttraumatic stress disorder...
