Hunter Biden took House Republicans to task on Wednesday, defying a subpoena for closed-door testimony and instead delivering a statement outside the Capitol decrying the party’s efforts to impeach his father, President Joe Biden.
In November, Republicans subpoenaed Hunter, ordering him to appear before members of Congress to answer questions in a closed-door setting. Biden rejected the demand despite threats to hold him in contempt of Congress, instead offering to testify before the committee in a public setting, where his statements would not be subject to cherry-picking and selective releases by the GOP.

Update: Kevin McCarthy spoke to reporters for nearly 50 minutes, in which he at first tried to strike a tone of gratitude and positivity about his tenure but then got into some score setting of the eight members who voted to oust him.
He said that they are not conservative but “angry and chaotic.” Of Rep. Nancy Mace (R-Sc), he said, “is a whole other story,” suggesting that she is lying when she says that he hasn’t kept his word.
Of Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-fl), who led the effort to remove him, McCarthy said, “You know it was personal. It was not about spending….It was about ethics.” Gaetz is the subject of an ethics committee investigation. “Just because Gaetz said something, don’t believe it’s true. I haven’t heard him say one true thing yet.”
McCarthy also chided Democrats, claiming that before he became speaker, then-House...

2Nd Update, 12:27 Pm Pt: “Thank you, Mr. Chew, for bringing Republicans and Democrats together,” Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-tx) said to the CEO of TikTok as a marathon congressional hearing was winding down Thursday.
Lawmakers of both parties pilloried the company and expressed frustration at what they saw as CEO Shou Zi Chew’s evasive answers during the session before the House Energy and Commerce Committee. It was a rare congressional hearing where there was so much agreement on the criticism of a company and a witness, albeit not all members said that TikTok should be banned and some focused their comments on social media privacy in general.
Will the publicity surrounding the hearing compel lawmakers to move on legislation? Sen. Mark Warner (D-va) and Sen. John Thune (R-sd), who have proposed a bill that would allow the Commerce Secretary to ban TikTok and other apps connected to foreign countries,...

The House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection released its final report on Thursday, concluding that former President Trump intentionally spread false claims about the 2020 election and instigated his supporters to attack the U.S. Capitol.
The long-anticipated, 845-page eight-chapter report brings an end to an 18-month investigation during which the committee interviewed over 1,000 witnesses and conducted nearly a dozen public hearings.
“As you read this report, please consider this: Vice President Pence, along with many of the appointed officials who surrounded Donald Trump, worked to defeat many of the...

Cara Mund speaking with a young voter. Image Source: Wyatt Ell
Cara Mund's run for North Dakota's sole seat in the US House of Representatives is a one-woman show. The 28-year-old and former Miss America says she currently holds nearly a dozen job titles: head of social media, campaign manager, treasurer.
"I really earned my way onto the ballot," Mund says. "There's so much that we as women candidates face in terms of barriers that we have to prove even more why we deserve to be there."
Mund, who graduated from Harvard Law School earlier this year, announced her candidacy in August - a late entry for any congressional race. But in just a few months, she has drummed up interest in a conservative state; she's running as an independent against Republican incumbent Rep. Kelly Armstrong.

One of the essential questions that arise when a director decides to make a film is which lens is the best lens to tell a certain story. It may seem like a minor detail in the filmmaking process, but Chicago filmmaker Jeremy Pinckert has put together a video comparing different kinds of Red Dragon Visual Lens--and it's an important watch. With Pinckert, Daufenbach Camera, Production Company Explore Media, Cinematographer Jamieson Mulholland, Producer Dave Wingate, Camera Assistant John Waterman, Editor Michael Dicken and Colorist Kelly Armstrong collaborated to put together an unofficial professional digital lens comparison guide for directors. In the video, which inadvertently takes the form of an art-house film (watch a hipster drink bottled water!), the team used Daufenbach’s Epic-m Red Dragon 6K sensor (captured in 5K) to capture the image. They also used 50mm as the base focal length, in both zooms and primes, and for the one lens.

Syfy has acquired the 13-episode first season of new Canadian scripted series Bitten from Entertainment One. It’s set to premiere in 2014. Based on Kelly Armstrong’s Women Of The Otherworld novels, Bitten stars Laura Vandervoort (Smallville, Ted) as Elena Michaels, the lone female werewolf in existence. Desperate to escape both a world she never wanted to be part of and the man who turned her into a werewolf, Elena (Vandervoort) has abandoned her Pack and taken refuge in a new city. She returns to Stonehaven, the werewolves’ ancestral domain, when bodies start turning up in her Pack’s backyard and she realizes she’ll stop at nothing to defend her Pack. Greg Bryk, Greyston Holt and Paul Greene also star. Bitten is produced by No Equal Entertainment, Hoodwink Entertainment, and eOne in association with Space and Bell Media. This is similar to Syfy’s acquisition of Haven, which eOne also produces.
