US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan has revealed that the Joe Biden government seeks to know more about the new, ‘made in China’ Huawei chipset used in the Mate 60 Pro smartphone.
“I’m going to withhold comment on the particular chip in question until we get more information about precisely its character and composition,” Sullivan replied to a question during a press briefing late on Tuesday.
He also reflected in the statement about the unknown specifications of the new Huawei chip.
“From my perspective though, what it tells us, regardless, is that the United States should continue on its course of a ‘small yard, high fence’ set of technology restrictions focused narrowly on national security concerns, not on the broader question of commercial decoupling. That is where our emphasis has been. That’s where it’s going to continue, sort of, regardless of the outcome,” he emphasised.

New Delhi, July 30 (Ians) External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Sunday said that critical and emerging technologies (CETs) are going to emerge as important metrics of power.Addressing the SemiconIndia conference virtually, Jaishankar said, “It is not surprising that CETs should now emerge as one of the important metrics of power. Who invents, who manufactures, what are the market shares, where are the resources, who has the skills, where is the talent pool — these are increasingly the crucial questions.”
He noted: “The depiction of a Chip War may be somewhat overstated, but it has more than a fundamental kernel of truth. To a considerable extent, concerns in the Cet field are influenced by how market shares and production dominance was leveraged in other areas”.
The external affairs minister said that technology trade is not just trade, it is as much as about political science.

The White House is supporting a bipartisan measure to take action against TikTok and other companies subject to influence from foreign adversaries that could threaten national security.
A bill introduced on Monday would establish a new, unified framework for reviewing and addressing foreign technology. Under the measure, the Commerce Department would have the authority to review, block or otherwise mitigate a range of transactions involving foreign information and communications technology products and services.
The legislation, called the Restrict Act, also empowers Commerce Department Secretary Gina Raimondo to recommend to the president divestiture orders, which could include forcing ByteDance to sell TikTok. Outright bans of foreign-owned companies are not mentioned in the bill, but such measures are in play under far-reaching language directing the department to “deter, disrupt, prevent, prohibit and mitigate” risks arising from foreign adversaries.

Ben Stiller and Sean Penn won’t be making movies in Russia any time soon.
On Monday, the country’s foreign ministry announced a list of 25 Americans — “high-ranking officials, representatives of the business and expert communities, as well as cultural figures” — who have been permanently barred from entering Russia. The list comes in response to the still-escalating international tensions brought on by Russia’s hostile invasion of Ukraine on February 24.
Stiller and Penn independently spoke out against Russian president Vladimir Putin in recent months. A representative of the Un Refugee Agency, Stiller spent World Refugee Day (June 20) with Ukrainian refugees currently living in Poland. The Emmy-winning writer-director-actor then met with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, at one point telling the embattled leader, “You’re my hero.”
Penn began filming a documentary for Vice about the war in Ukraine in June, having visited the previous fall to prepare a production plan should the worst occur.

YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki and Microsoft chief Satya Nadella were skedded to join 2,500 politicians, business and nonprofit leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland this week as the annual gathering kneecapped by Covid is back in person. It reconvenes, a bit subdued, at a critical moment with the world staggering under food scarcity, raging fuel prices and war.
There’s usually a sprinkling of snow on the pines at the tony mountain resort, about a seven-hour drive from the Cannes Film Festival. The showbiz presence is also scant at an event that over the years has hosted Hollywood and music royalty like Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Angelina Jolie, Charlize Theron, Sharon Stone, Goldie Hawn, Bono, Peter Gabriel and Will.I.Am.
Davos is the place where assembled dignitaries tittered and booed a boastful speech by former President Donald Trump in 2018, but weren’t laughing when he returned in 2020. In 2021, the event was virtual.

ABC News’ chief Washington correspondent Jonathan Karl has tested positive for Covid, just days after attending the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, a source confirmed.
With photographers focused on their every move, Karl sat next to Kim Kardashian at the event, as she and Pete Davidson were guests of the network. At the dinner, some 2,600 people packed into the Washington Hilton ballroom, but many also mingled at numerous cocktail parties and receptions before and after the event.

When the White House Correspondents’ Association hosts its first dinner in two years on April 30, it’ll be matched by the return of another D.C. tradition: pre- and post- event receptions, dinners and brunches that have made for a weekend of socializing and schmoozing.
Among the night before parties: Funny or Die and People, which will co-sponsor a late-night fete at The Reach at the Kennedy Center. Both brands have new owners: Henry R. Munoz, III bought Funny or Die and Dotdash purchased People last year and it’s now led by now led by Leah Wyar and Liz Vaccariello. For both brands, this will be their first Whcd weekend event in several years. In 2006, People started an annual party with Time on the Friday evening before the dinner, and the event got to be known for its mix of Hollywood celebrities and White House figures, as well as a hefty swag bag.
