Stephanie O’Keefe has been elected president of the American Federation of Musicians Local 47, becoming the first woman president in the union’s 123-year history. John Acosta, who served three two-year terms as president, did not seek re-election. In the local’s other elections, Danita Ng-Poss has been elected secretary-treasurer – the first person of Asian descent to serve as a titled officer of the union – and Rick Baptist has been re-elected to a fourth term as vice president.
“I am honored to be elected president of Local 47,” said O’Keefe, a professional French hornist. “It has been a goal of mine for many, many years to be an advocate for my fellow musicians. We are the producers of one of the most valuable commodities on Earth; music has been an integral part of every culture, in every part of the world, for thousands of years. Yet, somehow, the producers of this commodity are often undervalued,...

Los Angeles’ musicians union, Afm Local 47, is halting a wide range of meetings and services to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus. In a message to their members, the local’s leaders said that “In an abundance of caution and for the well-being of our members and staff, Afm Local 47 is taking increased precautionary measures regarding the use of our facilities while the situation surrounding the Covid-19 coronavirus continues to evolve.”
And with concerts being cancelled all across the world, the union is telling its members that “if one of your engagements is cancelled or you are unable to work due to Covid-19 or any other illness, please check your contract to review the cancellation policy and to review any force majeure provisions that may apply.” Pearl Jam, Mariah Carey and numerous other acts have postponed shows, as have several major music festivals, including Coachella and the Ultra Music Festival in Miami.

The Grammys and the Oscars are in the rear-view mirror, and South by Southwest is still a month away. That means the music industry gets to take a deep breath and contemplate the more important things in life, like whether a song is any good. One of the oldest axioms of the music business is, “It all starts with a song.” That was proved true this week with the reaction caused by the release of a new film’s theme, which caused people to immediately take sides.
This week in music:
Billie Eilish Bond Song – The theme for the forthcoming James Bond film, No Time To Die, has been released by pop music’s newest superstar and her producer brother. So far, it’s spawned more debate than that meme over gold dress versus blue dress. Those used to the soaring anthems spawned by Shirley Bassey thru Adele may not...

Los Angeles’ Local 47 of the American Federation of Musicians has endorsed Democratic Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont for president in the 2020 primary election.
“Today more than ever, unions and workers are under attack by exploitative forces that are eroding our middle class. Immediate action and activism is crucial,” said Local 47 president John Acosta. “Bernie Sanders is the best presidential candidate to defend musicians and all workers by protecting jobs and workers’ rights.”
The local’s political action committee voted unanimously to recommend that the executive board of the 7,000-member union endorse Sanders as the candidate “who best represents the interests of musicians.” On Tuesday, the board in turn voted unanimously to endorse Sanders “in an unprecedented move for a union historically removed from taking official stances in presidential elections,” the union said in a statement. The local said that it’s “the first musicians union in the country to take...
