Elliot Page conquered a new challenge for his first movie role in six years. In “Close to You,” an observant drama that premieres on Sunday at the Toronto Film Festival, there’s basically no written dialogue in the script, so everything that you hear in the movie was improvised by the actors on the day of shooting.
“I’ve never done anything like this before,” Page told Variety in a recent Zoom interview prior to the film’s premiere. “I found it incredibly intimidating.”
In “Close to You,” Page’s character Sam hasn’t visited his family since his transition four years ago. It’s not that he thinks his family isn’t supportive, but Sam doesn’t want to be treated like a different person — or have to bear the burden of their ignorance or discomfort. On an eventual trip home for his father’s birthday, Sam has a...

In The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed, writer-director-star Joanna Arnow plays Ann, a thirtysomething woman in a long-term Bdsm relationship with the much older Allen (Scott Cohen). The film opens on a naked Ann lying in bed beside a clothed Allen, before she turns and robotically dry humps him while he feigns sleep. “I love how you don’t care if I get off,” Ann coos to him. “It’s like I don’t even exist.” While this moment immediately establishing the playful rules of Ann and Allen’s sexual agreement, Arnow also hits on an apt metaphor for the existential crisis of so many modern millennials: that they’re exposed and ignored in an unforgiving social climate still dominated by older generations.
Ann’s affair with Allen is indicative of the rest of her day-to-day existence. As a “Clinical eMedia Learning Specialist” at a banal New York corporate office,...

The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin is opening up about the Pirates of the Caribbean reboot he had been developing at Disney which he initially thought the studio would pass on due to it being “too weird.”
“We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird. And they did!” Mazin told the LA Times.
Mazin told the publication he had been working on the script prior to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes alongside one of the original film’s writers Ted Elliot. However, due to the strikes, the development of the reboot has been put on hold.
“[Elliot] wrote a fantastic script and the strike happened and everyone’s waiting around,” Mazin added.
Disney had been developing several pics around the Pirates of the Caribbean universe with Mazin’s film being one of them. The film is not directly connected to...

Graham Nash got to know John Lennon relatively well over the years. He understood that the Beatle’s personality was relatively caustic at first, but he managed to break through and establish a friendship. Because of this, Cass Elliot asked Nash about what Lennon was like. Nash answered honestly, which brought Elliot to tears.
Graham Nash told Cass Elliot that John Lennon might be mean to her
Nash was a fan of The Mamas and The Papas and was interested in Michelle Phillips, so he went to Western Records to meet the band. He wound up speaking to Elliot, though, who wanted to know about British rock music.
“Inside the studio, Michelle, John, and Denny were huddled around a microphone, putting an overdub on ‘Dancing Bear,'” Nash wrote in his book Wild Tales. “Michelle was every bit as advertised: gorgeous and sexy — but otherwise engaged — so I wound up talking with Cass.

Craig Mazin recently told the Los Angeles Times that the script for “Pirates of the Caribbean 6” is so weird he is surprised Disney actually bought it. Variety reported in summer 2020 that Disney was in early development on two “Pirates” movies: A reboot led by Margot Robbie and a sixth film in the original franchise written by Mazin and Ted Elliott, the latter of whom co-wrote the first four “Pirates” movies.
“We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird,” Mazin said. “And they did! And then he wrote a fantastic script and the strike happened and everyone’s waiting around.”
The last “Pirates” movie, “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” opened in 2017. Robbie told Vanity Fair last November that her movie, written by “Birds of Prey” scribe Christina Hodson, had been dropped, adding, “We had an idea and we were developing it for a while,...

Jacinda Barrett wasn't the only cast wife to make a cameo on "Suits." In case you missed it, Troian Bellisario, "Pretty Little Liars" star and Patrick J. Adams's wife Irl, played a love interest of her husband's character, Mike Ross, on the series. Portraying lawyer Claire Bowden, Bellisario appeared in several episodes during seasons four and five as Mike's former flame.
We're first introduced to Claire as a legal-clinic intern in a season four flashback scene, where she's seen meeting Mike, a bike messenger. “There’s nothing the matter with the instrument, it’s the body. The woman’s body is all wrong!”
We’ve discussed how vulnerable it can be to be under the bright lights of the dentist’s chair but how about the doctor, particularly a specialty doctor that’s job is to deal with our most private of parts. David Cronenberg is the master of turning our bodies into horrible things that seek to hurt us, perfecting the use of the term “body horror”. So, what happens when Cronenberg makes a movie about twin gynecologists that begin to lose their grip on reality, and did you know that this is actually based on true events?...

Created by Alice Birch and inspired by the 1988 film by David Cronenberg, “Dead Ringers” gives us two main characters for the price of one. Rachel Weisz plays Beverly Mantle and Elliot Mantle, a pair of identical twin gynecologists with an unhealthy attachment to each other. But while they may be on a path of self-destruction, their dysfunction could pay off at the Emmys, which love actors playing multiple roles.
Sally Field (“Sybil”) and Toni Collette (“United States of Tara”) both won for playing characters with dissociative identity disorder — colloquially known as multiple personality disorder. More recently Mark Ruffalo (“I Know This Much is True”) took home a trophy for playing troubled twins. And in daytime, Erika Slezak (“One Life to Live”) famously won six Emmys, including prizes for playing her character’s alternate personalities.

There is something fitting about the fact that a charming adventure story about a boy that never grows up who leads a cadre of children wishing to remain similarly youthful and carefree forever gets remade in one form or another every decade or so. It speaks to the fact that the desire to avoid adulthood and remain unmoored and childlike forever remains as strong as ever, if not stronger. At the same time, it reveals our seeming inability to understand fully why the story is so resonant. Every time the story is told, you can feel the creator struggling with the material, wrestling with its meaning, imparting in the story their own beliefs and fears.
Director David Lowery, who has spent the last decade building an aesthetically and thematically similar but tonally diverse oeuvre, is a perfect modern match for this material. His works have explored heartache and loneliness and...

Once upon a time, there were two real-life identical-twin gynecologists. The brothers worked together at one of the finest hospitals in New York City and were a prominent part of Upper West Side high society. One of them, Cyril, was characterized as slightly more socially awkward than his sibling, Stewart; both were often referred to as “icy,” “aloof,” “remote.” It was rumored that the pair would sometimes switch places during the middle of exams with patients, one pretending to be the other. They would eventually be found together in a filthy apartment,...

[This story contains major spoilers to the finale of Amazon’s Dead Ringers.]
Dead Ringers wants to leave viewers with questions. Big questions, that will make you rethink what you just watched.
Prime Video’s limited series reworking of David Cronenberg’s iconic 1988 thriller that starred Jeremy Irons has released all six of its episodes, taking viewers on a psychosexual thrill ride with the dangerously co-dependent updated Mantle twins, identical world-renowned gynecologists Beverly and Elliot, a double lead role played by Oscar winner Rachel Weisz. Amid the Mantles’ mission to revolutionize childbirth and as the episodes unfold — hopping from one operatic dinner party to the next — the bond between the sisters fractures as their ambitions veer from one another for the first time in their all-too-intertwined lives.
While publicly described in the finale’s exposé headline as “Abusive Negligent Destructive Murderous? and Brilliant,” the ending to Alice Birch’s adaptation sees the twins privately coming back to one another, with Beverly telling her more dominant sister,...

Her latest TV series calls for her to play both twins in a reworking of Cronenberg’s dark and bloody classic, Dead Ringers. But Rachel Weisz, the famously private Oscar-winner, is used to stepping in and out of roles
There’s quite a lot of blood. There’s really quite a lot of blood in Dead Ringers, but it’s not the blood of bullet holes or stab wounds, or any of the other violences one might expect in a dark psychological thriller like this. It’s blood on knickers and operating tables, and smeared on silk shirts, and the blood as a baby’s head crowns – the bloods of birth and loss, guttural screams, and in the middle of it all, Rachel Weisz, twice.

Oscar winner Rachel Weisz, and Rachel Weisz, dominated Canneseries on Saturday, as the audience gathered at the Lumière Auditorium in Cannes broke into spontaneous applause after the first scene of her new show “Dead Ringers.”
Premiering in main competition, the six-episode limited Prime Video series – created by Alice Birch – played with the viewers’ emotions all throughout its first two episodes, eliciting frequent laughs and delivering more expletives than Logan Roy monologues, but also causing a few walk-outs, seemingly provoked by its detailed depictions of childbirth and medical procedures.

When The Way Home‘s Kat walked down a staircase in a red dress to the sounds of Sixpence None The Richer’s “Kiss Me” in Episode 5, it was hardly the first time her portrayer Chyler Leigh had paid homage to the iconic scene from the ’90s teen movie classic She’s All That.
Leigh tells TVLine that the producers of Hallmark Channel’s time-traveling family drama “definitely knew” that the actress had already once recreated the moment in which Rachael Leigh Cook’s She’s All That character unveils her makeover while descending a flight of stairs to a stunned Freddie Prinze Jr.

Today in remakes we're pretty sure we don't need, Prime Video released a new trailer for their new limited series adaptation of the 1988 film "Dead Ringers." If you're a horror fan, your attention is probably piqued, considering the original film is one of the horror maestro David Cronenberg's oeuvre, but how does it look?
In the sneak peek, we meet Rachel Weisz's version of characters played by Jeremy Irons in the original movie. Weisz plays twin doctor siblings who seem to be going to crazy lengths to change the face of women's healthcare. According to the streamer, the synopsis reads:
A modern take on David Cronenberg's 1988 classic film, Dead Ringers is a limited series starring Rachel Weisz playing the double-lead role of Elliot and Beverly Mantle, twins who share everything: drugs, lovers, and an unapologetic desire to do whatever it takes—including pushing the boundaries on medical ethics...

We'll get it out of the way first — yes, we've heard every joke about "Dead Ringers? Hurr hurr, is this the Radio 4 impressions show?" No, it is not. What it is is a new TV adaptation of David Cronenberg's 1988 thriller, this time starring Rachel Weisz. Check out the trailer…
Weisz here plays Elliot and Beverly Mantle, twins who share everything: drugs, lovers, and an unapologetic desire to do whatever it takes… including pushing the boundaries of medical ethics—in an effort to challenge antiquated practices and bring women’s health care to the forefront. Well, given that the twins are potentially psychopathic, we're going to say it's a big ol' yes.

In the sixth episode of “Emergency: NYC,” Dr. David had a serious accident that injured his spine and neck. So, Dr. John decided to perform a laminectomy infusion surgery, and in the seventh episode, Dr. David was ready for action again. After the surgery, David participated in therapy and physical exercises for two months to get back in shape. Everyone was glad to have him back at the hospital because his expertise was needed to treat patients. In addition, many people relied on Dr. David for their surgeries. Fortunately, he suffered no serious problems or fractures that could limit his mobility or hinder his career. Back at Cohen’s Center, we learned more about a new patient, Tyler, a 14-year-old boy who suffered from renal dysplasia, a condition in which the kidneys are underdeveloped. It was clear that Tyler’s kidneys weren’t functioning well and he needed a transplant as soon as possible.

Who would have ever thought that we’d eventually come to a point when Dead Ringers, perhaps David Cronenberg’s most demented movie, would become so valuable an IP that Prime Video would reboot (and gender swap) the premise into a TV series? Indeed, Dead Ringers ranks as one of Cronenberg’s most arresting works. While the idea of turning his film about demented twin gynecologists (unforgettably played by Jeremy Irons) into a series seems like a reach, the show has one thing about it that instantly gives it credibility: Rachel Weisz.
Now, Prime Video has released the final, full trailer for the much-anticipated series, which starts streaming on April 21st. All six episodes will be released on the same day, and while Cronenberg is not involved in the show, the behind-the-scenes talent is noteworthy. "I want to change the way that women birth." "How does that vomit-inducing idealism translate into $$?" Amazon has debuted the full-length official trailer for their Dead Ringers series based on the 1988 film of the same name by David Cronenberg. Another modern update going from film to TV. The Mantle twins, identical from head to toe, are on a mission to change the way women give birth, starting in Manhattan. The original film's synopsis is pretty much the same: twin gynecologists (originally played by Jeremy Irons) take full advantage of the fact that nobody can tell them apart, until their relationship begins to deteriorate over a woman. This time, Rachel Weisz stars in both lead roles, as Elliot and Beverly Mantle. The series cast also includes Michael Chernus as Tom, Poppy Liu as Greta, plus Britne Oldford, Jeremy Shamos, Jennifer Ehle, and Emily Meade. This looks wild and bold and devious!

Oscar-winner Rachel Weisz plays twins Dr. Elliot Mantle and Dr. Beverly Mantle in Prime Video’s Dead Ringers, a reimagining of David Cronenberg’s 1988 thriller. The just-released trailer for the limited series introduces Elliot and Beverly and sets up the world in which the twins exist.
Prime Video recently hosted a press conference with series star and executive producer Rachel Weisz and creator, writer, showrunner, and executive producer Alice Birch (Normal People) in support of the trailer’s release. During the press conference, Birch and Weisz discussed updating David Cronenberg’s Dead Ringers which starred Jeremy Irons in dual roles. They also talked about the logistics of filming Weisz as twins and developing two incredibly complex characters.

What’s better than Rachel Weisz? Two Rachel Weiszes. The Oscar-winning actor is playing twins in Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming “Dead Ringers” series, and the streamer now has double the footage with the release of the full official trailer for the show.
The series is based on David Cronenberg’s 1988 psychological thriller film, which starred Jeremy Irons as Beverly and Elliot Mantle, identical twin brothers who run a successful Obgyn clinic. Weisz plays gender-flipped versions of Beverly and Elliot, but the twin’s disturbingly close relationship — down to sharing lovers and drugs — remains intact. The trailer, set to Soft Cell’s 1981 synth cover of “Tainted Love,” teases a very different storyline compared to the original film, focusing on the twin’s experiments to change the very way women can give birth — pushing against basic medical ethics in the process.
“You want me to grow you a baby out of nothing?...
