CinemaCon is in full swing. Studios are unveiling some new exclusive pictures and information at upcoming projects. We’ve gotten first looks at movies like Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and trailers for Trap and The Joker: Folie à Deux. Some promotional materials have shown a look at Gladiator II and Wolverine’s new mask for Deadpool & Wolverine. Recently, Amazon MGM has revealed some new footage of the upcoming Christmas comedy Red One, which stars Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans and J.K. Simmons.
Deadline reports on the ten minutes that Amazon has screened for the CinemaCon audience. First off, while this is a movie that has been set for Prime Video, the footage is said to be very theatrical and it is revealed that Red One will indeed be hitting theaters on November 15. Not much can be said by way of details as those who saw the footage are instructed to keep their lips sealed.

While Amazon MGM Studios didn’t take the stage at CinemaCon, they did meet with exhibitors and key press to strut their future theatrical slate, in particular they showed off ten minutes of the Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans’ movie Red One. While we agree to keep mum about the details of the Santa Claus rescue movie, let’s just say the originally conceived for Prime Video title is definitely meant for theatrical, which is where it’s going on Nov. 15; the only wide release currently on that weekend.
Let’s just say that Red One is a fire-breathing Christmas action movie that completely reinvents the holiday genre. There hasn’t been a mass appealing Christmas tentpole in six years, the last being Illumination/Universal’s The Grinch which made over a half billion worldwide. Red One is a really fun original action film for both Johnson and Evans, and...

It’s difficult to think of a director as young as Barry Jenkins who seems so clearly destined to be remembered as one of the greats. After dropping his moving, romantic debut feature “Medicine for the Melancholy” in 2008, Jenkins further honed his craft and became a household name (at least among any cinephiles worth their salt) with the release of his sophomore feature “Moonlight.” The tender, beautiful film was the subject of rapturous acclaim, and its groundbreaking and dramatic Best Picture win at the Oscars cemented it as an all-time great work of art.
Since then, Jenkins has only gone from strength to strength. His 2018 follow-up “If Beale Street Could Talk” was a similar critical darling. And his epic limited series adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s “The Underground Railroad,” which sadly went under the radar for much of the general public in 2021, was nothing short of stunning. Critics, including IndieWire’s Ben Travers,...

“This goes beyond scholarship. This is a lived life for me,” said Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor of playing journalist Isabel Wilkerson in “Origin,” Ava DuVernay’s latest film that both brings the ideas from Pulitzer Prize winner’s 2020 book “Caste,” and the behind the scenes hardships Wilkerson faced while writing it, to movie theaters nationwide on January 19.
Speaking to IndieWire over Zoom, Ellis-Taylor used a moment over the holidays in her native Mississippi to describe the ways in which she challenges the pillars of caste Wilkerson writes about in her book, like terror and cruelty, in her everyday life. “I’ll put it like this: I wanted some catfish,” said the Oscar-nominated “King Richard” actress. However, upon entering the Hattiesburg establishment best known for the southern delicacy, she noticed the state flag on display was the pre-2020 one that still had the Confederate flag incorporated into its design.

Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor has made some changes in her life.
We’ve all grown to know her as the two-time Emmy nominated actress from “When They See Us” and “Lovecraft Country” and her Oscar-nominated performance in “King Richard,” all of which came under her initial professional name: Aunjanue Ellis.
When the first promotional materials were released for her new film “Origin” from writer and director Ava DuVernay, a natural question began circulating regarding the hyphenated addition of “Taylor” to her professional name. What prompted the name change? Turns out, she wanted to honor the most important person in her life posthumously: her mother.
“The love of my life, my mother, gave me my Daddy’s name,” she tells Variety. “I was like, wait a minute, lady, I want your name. This past birthday, I said, ‘What am I doing? I want to carry her with me every day.’ So, how do...

“King Richard” star Aunjanue Ellis is set to star in an adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “The Nickel Boys” being set up at MGM’s Orion Pictures.
The studio has tapped RaMell Ross, an Oscar nominee for the documentary “Hale County This Morning, This Evening,” to direct the film, and Ross also co-wrote the screenplay alongside Josyln Barnes.
Ellis will lead the cast alongside up-and-coming actors Ethan Herisse (“When They See Us”) and Brandon Wilson (“The Way Back”), who will anchor and lead the film’s young cast. Hamish Linklater (“The Big Short”) and Fred Hechinger will also co-star.
“The Nickel Boys” is Whitehead’s follow-up to his other Pulitzer winner, “The Underground Railroad.” Though the book is fiction, it’s based on the real story of a Florida reform school that, over 111 years, hid decades of abuse against its residents and even had bodies secretly buried on its campus.

Brad Pitt, treasure hunter?
The Oscar winner admitted to being “obsessed” with finding rumored gold on his wine-producing property in Provence, France. Pitt purchased the thousand-acre estate, Château Miraval, in 2008 with Angelina Jolie; the former couple were married on the premises in 2014, and produce rosé from the winery. Jolie recently sold her stake in the business, prompting a legal battle as part of their divorce proceedings.
Pitt, however, was approached by a man “a few years ago,” as he told GQ, claiming that the château had millions of dollars in buried gold on the grounds, dating back to the medieval era. The treasure was supposedly taken from the Levant during the Crusades. Pitt was hooked.
“I got obsessed,” the “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” star said. “Like for a year, this was all I could think about, just the excitement of it all.”

Amazon Prime Video’s The Underground Railroad has been revealed as surprise winner of the prestigious BAFTA TV Award for Best International.
Barry Jenkins’ adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s powerful novel beat off stiff competition from Call My Agent!, Lupin, Mare of Easttown, Squid Game and Succession in a hugely competitive category that reflects the quality of non-uk TV in the past 12 months.
Moonlight creator Jenkins wasn’t on hand to collect the award but the execs said the show had had a “beautiful history,” having been conceived when the Oscar-winning director was in London pitching for If Beal Street Could Talk.
The fantasy historical drama starred the likes of Thuso Mbedu and Joel Edgerton.
It follows a fictional story of people attempting an escape from slavery in the southern United States in the 1800s, utilizing a key plot element that employs the literary style of magic realism.

A fourth season of “True Detective” is officially in development at HBO, Variety has learned from sources.
The new season is currently titled “True Detective: Night Country.” The plot is largely being kept under wraps, but sources say that it would take place in the Arctic, where night can last more than 24 hours. It is also believed that the season would feature two female leads. No casting is confirmed at this time.
Issa López is attached to serve as writer and executive producer on the new season in addition to directing the pilot. Barry Jenkins, Adele Romanski, and Mark Ceryak of Pastel will also executive produce. Pastel is currently under a first-look deal at HBO and HBO Max. Anonymous Content, which has produced past seasons of the show, and several other executive producers from past seasons are expected to board the project as well.
HBO declined to comment.

“Moonlight” director Barry Jenkins will receive the Writers Guild of America West’s 2022 Paul Selvin Award in recognition of his script for the ninth episode of his Prime Video limited series “The Underground Railroad,” which tells an alternate history of the legendary network that helped Black people free slavery.
Jenkins will be honored at the 2022 Writers Guild Awards joint virtual ceremony on Sunday, March 20. The award is named after the late Paul Selvin, general counsel to Wgaw for 25 years, and is given each year to “the member or members whose script best embodies the spirit of the constitutional and civil rights and liberties that are indispensable to the survival of free writers everywhere.”
“It is a humbling honor to receive an award given in Mr. Selvin’s name and in the spirit with which he went about his life and work, defending the civil rights of everyday people and protecting...

The USC Libraries revealed the winners for the 34th annual USC Libraries Scripter Award on Saturday as a virtual event, which honors the year’s best film and television adaptations (along with the works on which they are based). This group of academics, industry professionals, and critics is often predictive of the Adapted Screenplay Oscar race. Maggie Gyllenhaal’s adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s “The Lost Daughter” (Netflix) won the film award, while the television prize went to author Beth Macy and screenwriter Danny Strong for the Hulu series “Dopesick.”
Of the five finalist writers for film adaptation, three are also Oscar nominees. Rebecca Hall (Nella Larsen’s “Passing”) and Joel Coen (William Shakespeare’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth”) did not make that cut. “The Lost Daughter,” therefore, advances in the Oscar race ahead of “Dune” (Warner Bros. Pictures/Legendary Pictures and Ace) screenwriters Eric Roth, Jon Spaihts, and Denis Villeneuve,...

The top prizes at the 2022 USC Scripter Awards went to screenwriter Maggie Gyllenhaal and novelist Elena Ferrante for Netflix’s “The Lost Daughter” and scripter Danny Strong and author Beth Macy for Netflix’s “Dopesick” during Saturday’s virtual ceremony.
As in past years, the awards go to both the scriptwriters and the writers of the original source material.
“The Lost Daughter” is based on Ferrante’s 2006 novel. Gyllenhaal happily toasted the win with a glass of champagne, noting that this award “means so much to me particularly because it is chosen and voted for by writers.” The director and writer of the Oscar-nominated film described Ferrante as her “north star” for the project, adding that the author has been “a truly wise and generous guide.”

“I wanted to tell this show as a limited series and not as a feature,” admits Barry Jenkins about adapting “The Underground Railroad” for the small screen. “I want the audience to experience the entire spectrum of emotions that a character like Cora might experience,” he explains.
“She’s just a woman, you know. She’s not famous. She wasn’t some notable abolitionist and those people are great and we should tell their stories, but I love that we could turn the camera on any face in the frame and they would have a story worth spending 10 hours with, and over the course of those 10 hours and experience life through their eyes, walking a mile in their shoes, that yes, would activate empathy in the audience.”
We talked with the Oscar winner (for “Moonlight”) as part of Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” Q&a roundtable event with 2022 Directors Guild Awards nominees.
