Update: Austin Reaves is returning to the Los Angeles Lakers. Reaves, a restricted free agent, agreed to a four-year, $56 million Early Bird maximum contract. He proved himself this season, averaging 16.9 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.6 assists for the Lakers in 16 playoff games.
The Lakers also reached a deal for guard D’Angelo Russell to return on a two-year, $37 million deal, ESPN reported. The Lakers also signed free agent cente Jaxson Hayes.
The deals keep General Manager Rob Pelinka’s promise to keep his team’s young core together. Pelinka is eyeing the future, when 38-year-old LeBron James is likely to no longer be with the team. James’s contract runs through the 2024-2025 season.
Earlier: Forget that fever dream of Kyrie Irving reuniting with LeBron James for one last charge at a championship.
Irving took the path of least resistance, agreeing to return to the Dallas Mavericks for a three-year, $126 million deal, his agent confirmed.

In an alternate timeline of events, the Final Four would have been decided this past weekend. After four days of whittling away a dozen of the 16 remaining teams in the Ncaa Men’s Basketball Tournament, maybe the public wouldn’t have been in the right mood for a two-hour documentary feature about a player payment scandal that some feared might rip apart the fabric of the entire college hoops structure.
The star of director Pat Kondelis’ “The Scheme” is not a player with a famed buzzer-beater to his highlight reel or a flurry of stats to plug into prospect algorithms. If anything, Christian Dawkins’ pathway to the law enforcement plot that eventually ensnared him and some of his associates began because he recognized early on that athletic glory was not in his future.

The Toronto Raptors made history tonight, beating the defending champion Golden State Warriors 114-110 to become the first National Basketball Assn. team based outside the USA to win the league championship.
The Raptors were led by guard Fred VanVleet, who came up big in the fourth quarter with 12 points. The North had balanced scoring, with four players scoring 20 or more points. Andre Inguodala led the Warriors with 22 points.
The game marked the final appearance at Oracle Arena for the Warriors, who head to a posh new arena in downtown San Francisco next year. It also may mark the end of the team’s NBA dynasty, as several key players are free agents. The Warriors won titles in 2015, 2017 and 2018 with the same basic core, but they were denied a third straight win in 2019 by the Raptors.
At times, it seemed like the series was more about the struggles of Golden State,...

Just as “Space Jam” didn’t star Michael Jordan by himself, neither can “Space Jam 2” focus exclusively on LeBron James. Charles Barkley, Shawn Bradley, Patrick Ewing, Larry Johnson, and Muggsy Bogues all had their talents stolen by the Monstars, too, and so fans have been waiting to hear who will round out the starting five of this long-awaited sequel. FiveThirtyEight has thrown its hat into the ring, attempting to help LeBron and the filmmakers by using math to cast the rest of the film.
“We’re not casting the five best players in the NBA right now, or even the five best actors,” the narrator informs us, but rather using their patented Carmelo (Career-Arc Regression Model Estimator with Local Optimization) system to find the players most similar to the supporting cast of the original “Space Jam.” First up is Barkley, who during the 1994-95 season averaged 23 points, 11.1 rebounds, and...
