Producer Mark Burnett expected a hit when he sent 16 contestants and a then-unknown 38-year-old host named Jeff Probst to the Borneo island of Malaysia for an adaptation of the Swedish competition show Expedition Robinson. What he got instead was a cultural phenomenon. Survivor instantly became a ratings juggernaut, and viewership for the first season finale reached north of 50 million. Reality TV existed before Survivor, but the show’s low overhead and potential for mass appeal single-handedly ushered in the reality-competition boom.
In the 24 years since it hit airwaves, Survivor has morphed from a “social experiment” into television’s most complex and grueling competition, with players practically raised on the show elevating it to new heights of strategy. Its motto—“Outwit. Outplay. Outlast.”—speaks to the complex permutations of physical strength, mental acumen, and social skills that can produce winners as diverse as season 30’s Mike Holloway, who got himself to...

The Challenge stars Wes Bergmann and Theresa Jones are two MTV OGs many fans would love to see return for another installment of the competition series.
Based on recent remarks, they are doubling down on their retirement talk and turning down opportunities to appear on MTV’s show.
Viewers last saw Theresa in the Double Agents season as she teamed up with Jay Starrett.
Wes last appeared on The Challenge: USA 2 as one of the six MTV stars competing against CBS reality TV icons.
With Wes set to appear in the House of Villains 2 cast soon, some fans may have wondered if that had anything to do with his retirement from The Challenge.
With Season 40 filming underway, he set the record straight, suggesting that he has no further intention of appearing on MTV’s version of the show. However, he left the door open for something related to The Challenge.

Nurys Mateo had what many fans of The Challenge might call a breakout performance in the recent Battle For a New Champion season.
While Nurys didn’t enter the game as a rookie, she was entering her second season, and this time, she had to fight against tougher odds.
Nurys won multiple eliminations to earn her spot in the Season 39 final, something no other finalists could say they did.
While she finished second, fans praised Nurys for rising to the occasion throughout the season, including standing up to and calling out her opponents.
She also found love during the filming of the season, as she and showmance Horacio Gutierrez have continued dating beyond MTV’s show.
Thanks to the above, Nurys established herself as a new fan-favorite competitor on MTV’s show. She also recently won multiple awards for Season 39, setting a new record.

MTV’s The Challenge: Battle for a New Champion is finally here, and we can’t wait to see how it all goes down with a cast full of contestants who’ve never won. This season, players who’ve never become Challenge champions get their fair shot at winning — and there’s an entirely new format they’ll have to follow. Here’s how The Challenge Season 39 works, plus information on the season’s biggest twist.
MTV’s ‘The Challenge: Battle for a New Champion’ has a new format
MTV’s The Challenge Season 39 brings an entirely new concept, format, and twist. As a longtime fan of the MTV series, I enjoy seeing veteran players take on newbies, as it’s always nice to see familiar faces and old feuds burn brightly in a new season. However, fans (myself included) must get used to an entirely new cast with season 39, Battle for a New Champion.

The Challenge: USA only featured six vets, alongside players from CBS shows Big Brother, Survivor, and The Amazing Race, but three of them made it to the final. It was a two-day final, and Cory Wharton reached the flag after a tough first half after winner Chris Underwood. Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio arrived after female winner Desi Williams to cap off a 10-mile race for the second day. Wharton and Devenanzio look back on the season, compare it to MTV‘s Challenges, and more. Congratulations to both of you for finishing the final, even though you didn’t win. So far, The Challenge: USA winners have been “Survivor strong,” between the first two seasons. In Season 1, it was Danny McCray and Sarah Lacina who were the only ones to finish the final. And now, in Season 2, Chris Underwood and Desi Williams each took home $250,000. “We’re just trying to keep the train rolling,” Underwood says. It was a two-day final, the first of which consisted of trials that tested the players’ Strength, Smarts, Skills, and Steel Stomachs. The second was a 10-mile race, with a few challenges along the way. In the end, Underwood reached the flag first and Williams third (and first of the women). Michele Fitzgerald lucked out, for the most part, in playing both the Survivor and vets side in The Challenge: USA Season 2… until she didn’t. It was a double elimination week, so along with Wes Bergmann retiring from The Challenge after his loss to Chris Underwood, Alyssa Snider exited after facing off against Cassidy Clark in the arena. Emotions were running high with those two departures, so TV Insider caught up with Alyssa to take us inside that, find out where she and Tyler Crispen stand, and more. Talk about that elimination. Is there anything you think you could have done differently? Alyssa Snider: It was so hard and scary. Being harnessed 30 feet in the air and having to street fight my way out of there is just so not my personality. I remember being up there and — you could even hear me — saying the whole time, “Just keep swimming. You got it. Just keep going.

Wes Retires From ‘The Challenge’: ‘As Soon As Bananas Becomes My Number One, That’s Time to Call It’
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Challenge: USA Season 2 Episode 10, “A Less Perfect Union.”] Wes Bergmann, who has been with the franchise since 2006, has said this season on The Challenge: USA that he’s retiring, but is that the case? He was eliminated in the latest episode, having been sent in by the hopper to face off against Chris Underwood in Ripped Off — each, hanging from a tower, had to tear off patches from the other’s suit — and lost by one. And after, he announced that it was, in fact, his last Challenge. TV Insider turned to Wes to find out if that’s still true. Was this really your last season of The Challenge? Wes Bergmann: Yes. When did you know it was time? Was this something you’d been thinking about coming soon, even before you knew you would be a father? Yeah, the father stuff is the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

Since it might only take one ball in the hopper to send someone down to elimination on The Challenge: USA, having six in there is just asking for trouble. Such was the case for Sebastian Noel. What didn’t help him: He tried campaigning to get votes for Cory Wharton to face Chris Underwood, one of the nominations by daily winners Tori Deal and Faysal Shafaat. (The other was Cassidy Clark.) He then tried to blame Chris, already in hot water with everyone in the house for telling people different things. The two competed in Trick, Trick, Boom, in which they had to bounce balls across panels into barrels. Chris won. Below, Sebastian talks his (failed) strategy, relationship with Tori, and more. Things got messy in the house in this episode, especially as people campaigned for who others should vote for. And you tried to get people to vote for Cory,...

It only took one vote to send Alyssa Lopez home in The Challenge: USA Season 2. In “Operation Hat Trick,” named after the vets’ big move, the focus turned from vets vs. rookies to Big Brother vs. Survivor. After Green Team won the daily and nominated Chris Underwood and Cassidy Clark for elimination, Johnny “Bananas” DeVenanzio, Tori Deal, Josh Martinez, Cory Wharton, and Faysal Shafaat put five names in a hat and randomly picked one as their votes. That was the only vote for Lopez, but her ball came out of the hopper, and so she faced off against Clark and lost in Block Heads. (Each was locked in a cage that had to be maneuvered around the arena to pick up flags. Those flags then revealed a code to unlock the cage.)
