A California math teacher killed in 2013 may have been recorded begging for her life in an accidental phone call placed by her alleged killer, according to court documents obtained by People.
Jill Thomas Grant was found dead on a golf course in December 2013. The 41-year-old’s throat had been slit with a box cutter and she had been run over by a car. Prosecutors have charged her boyfriend, Michael John Franco, with her murder.
On the night Grant died, the couple was throwing a party at their home in a gated community. Party guests arrived, but couldn’t make it past the gate.

Jóhann Jóhannsson’s film scores tend to speak for themselves, but the “Sicario” and “Arrival” composer recently made an exception by appearing on the Song Exploder podcast to discuss his work. The main topic of discussion was the piece “Heptapod B” from Denis Villeneuve’s latest film, which the Icelandic musician describes as “subsonic rumbling.”

Jóhannsson also worked with Villeneuve on “Prisoners,” the director’s English-language debut, and will likewise score his “Blade Runner” sequel due out next October. He describes his process during the podcast, going in depth on the layering techniques he used alongside synthesizers, wood and the human voice. “I avoided long notes,” he says, which was part of his attempt not to simply mimic “2001: A Space Odyssey.” “I wanted to work with this kind of stuttering, random, rhythm pattern...

The super storm that devastated the East Coast last month didn't halt the elections to the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society's national board. Hurricane Sandy, which made landfall in New York and New Jersey on Oct. 29, caused billions of dollars in damage and claimed some 100 lives. It was also a major disruption to the theater community, shutting down Broadway shows and delaying casting calls for actors. Despite the storm, there were a "record" number of ballots returned in the elections for the national board of the Sdc, a union representing professional stage directors and choreographers. Karen Azenberg, who was reelected as Sdc president, said she was "amazed by the participation and unity of Sdc's Membership." "Despite the aftermath from Hurricane Sandy a record number of ballots were returned and our Tellers Committee Members made it in to count them, demonstrating the resiliency and dedication of our membership," Azenberg said in a statement.

There’s no such thing as a Lifetime Fan Appreciation Award for game developers, but if there was good ol’ Gearbox, the folks that brought us the addicting Borderlands would be a shoe-in. Last month Borderlands fan Michael John Mamaril passed away at the age of 22 due to cancer; a friend, Carlo, submitted a request to Gearbox, asking that the smarmy robot mascot Claptrap read a short eulogy to Michael. Not only did Gearbox like the idea, they’ve also promised to make Mike an Npc in the upcoming Borderlands 2.
Seriously, that is a damn fine show of appreciation by the developer. Check out the sound clip of Claptrap’s reading the eulogy below, and look for Mike’s Npc in Borderlands 2 in 2012.

We have suggestions for Crystal Bowersox, Lee Dewyze and the rest of the finalists before 'Idol Gives Back.'

"American Idol" opened up its stage to inspirational songs, in 2007 and 2008, as part of its "Idol Gives Back" charity show. Those theme weeks gave us performances that were either uplifting (Jason Castro's ethereal "Somewhere Over the Rainbow") or left us in the reality-show doldrums (Michael John's "Dream On," which got him the boot).
After taking a year off during a recession-afflicted 2009, "Idol Gives Back" and inspirational songs are back — this time led by mentor Alicia Keys. The wide-open theme will give contestants the chance to go old-school (Frank Sinatra) or contemporary (Kelly Clarkson), youthful (Jordin Sparks) or mature (Susan Boyle), country (Rascal Flatts), soul (James Brown) or rock (Queen). In short, "Idol" hopefuls can take their song...
