Don’t get me wrong. I was happy to hear Alejandro Aranda play his own music with only his acoustic guitar as an accompaniment since that was what made “American Idol” viewers fall in love with him during his audition. For a couple of weeks now, the too-loud in-house back-up band has been drowning out his dulcet tones.
His self-penned romantic ballad, “Poison,” was beautifully delivered, no question. And, yet, I Do have other questions. Why was this shy home-schooled 24-year-old dishwasher from Pomona, California, allowed to perform his own composition while the other contestants chose songs previously done by other artists?

“I don’t think any of them shocked me,” says Gold Derby contributor Denton Davidson when responding to the elimination of Evelyn Cormier, Ashley Hess, Eddie Island and Riley Thompson during the Top 14 results episode of “American Idol.” “I sort of thought that Luke Bryan was going to save Riley … but she had such a bad performance I think that really hurt her.” Davidson joins senior editors Marcus James Dixon and Susan Wloszczyna to discuss the recently revealed Top 10, the four singers sent packing and the sickeningly sweet critiques of judges Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie.

How do you know that the Season 17 line-up of ‘American Idol’ contestants is one of the best ever? Even the pros have been awestruck by the talent onstage. First, Stevie Nicks posts on social media that Alejandro Aranda‘s audition made her weep. Then we learned that Elton John wrote on Instagram how moved he was by Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon‘s Top 14 version of his song, “We All Fall in Love Sometimes,” a lesser-known tune from Sir Elton’s 1975 album “Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy” that has been previously covered by Jeff Buckley and Coldplay. Two other hopefuls picked more obvious choices from British superstar’s songbook, Raquel Trinidad with “Tiny Dancer” and Eddie Island with “Bennie and the Jets,” but their familiarity likely led in part to their eliminations. Meanwhile, Jeremiah easily made his way into the Top 10 just on the basis of fan votes.

Dimitrius Graham‘s journey on “American Idol” Season 17 almost came to end during Monday’s Top 14 results episode, but Luke Bryan was so moved by his “save-me” song of Billie Eilish‘s “when the party’s over” that he just couldn’t let him go. “I have changed my mind three times in 10 seconds,” Luke said before announcing, “I have to lean on the sheer emotion I felt: Dimitrius.” Did Luke make the right choice by saving Dimitrius and advancing him to the Top 10? “American Idol” judge Lionel Richie was so entertained by Uche‘s “save-me” song of Rihanna‘s “Diamonds” that he jumped the gun by instantly saving him during Monday’s Top 14 results episode. Instead of giving a normal critique of Uche’s performance, Lionel walked up on stage and escorted the 24-year-old Sugarland, Texas resident to safety, proclaiming “That’s my pick!” when host Ryan Seacrest asked what he was doing. One of Katy Perry‘s favorite contestants on “American Idol” — Alyssa Raghu — was in danger of going home during Monday’s Top 14 results episode, but luckily Katy had the power to do something about it. The Monday April 15 episode of the ABC revival of “American Idol” saw the Top 14 reduced to the Top 10. Seven of the singers continuing on in the show — Alejandro Aranda, Laci Kaye Booth, Walker Burroughs, Wade Cota, Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon, Laine Hardy and Madison VanDenburg — learnt that they numbered among America’s favorites and earned places in the Top 10 based on their performances on Sunday’s show.

No one expected Monday’s episode of American Idol — which narrowed its crop of finalists down to 10 — to be easy, but I don’t think anyone expected it to be this messy, either.
From Ryan Seacrest’s uncomfortable walk-and-talks with the contestants (most of whom responded with one-word answers in a desperate attempt to move on) to his super awkward announcements of the individual results (those fake-outs were… bad), the season’s first official live episode was… kind of a mess. And that’s not even including the times that the judges literally discussed how awkward this show’s elimination process is.

Most of the Top 14 contestants on Sunday’s first “American Idol” live show this season attempted to step up their game to ensure they capture those fan votes. Some like Eddie Island wore a gaudy fringe jacket and decided to shout-croon Elton John‘s “Bennie and the Jets” while Uche’ focused more on his fancy footwork than just singing “Finesse” by Bruno Mars. As for throaty Evelyn Cormier, she attempted to switch from swoony ballads to Jimmy Eat World‘s bouncy “The Middle,” but it felt like she just shifted into the wrong gear.
But then came the calm and oh-so-cool Alejandro Aranda, who decided to go the DJ route by putting an electronic spin on “Dance” by Drake. He stood at a keyboard while adding beats to the melody as he effortlessly sang with that hypnotic smoothie of a voice (watch his performance above). It’s clear that he...

‘American Idol’ recap: Top 14 sing for America’s votes on Night 12 of Season 17 [Updating Live Blog]
Six weeks after the second season of “American Idol” hosted by Ryan Seacrest began on ABC, America finally gets a chance to vote as the Top 14 take to the stage on the April 14 episode. These finalists survived a grueling process that began with winning over the three judges — Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie — at a regional audition and getting a ticket to Hollywood.
A whopping 150 plus would-be winners made the trip to La La Land, before being cut to 40. That group then competed both individually and in groups before the judges decided on the Top 20. This score of artists were then asked to sing both solo and in duets with celebrities and convince the three judges that they deserved a place in the Top 14.

It took six weeks but “American Idol” has finally revealed the Top 14 contestants who will sing for your votes beginning on April 14. We asked you which of these are the early favorites to win season 17, which is hosted by Ryan Seacrest. Only three of these 14 finalists – Alejandro Aranda, Laine Hardy and Jeremiah Harmon — registered double digit support in our poll. Each of these frontrunners was a clear favorite for at least one of the three judges: Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie.
None of the other 11 other artists in the Top 14 — Laci Booth, Walker Burroughs, Evelyn Cormier, Wade Cota, Dimitrius Graham, Ashley Hess, Eddie Island, Uché Ndubizu, Alyssa Raghunandan, Riley Thompson and Madison VanDenburg. — merited more than five percent of the vote. Are we underestimating one of these talents?

For the first time in 17 seasons, Ryan Seacrest called in sick to American Idol on Monday, forcing mentor Bobby Bones out of the wings and into the spotlight. (Bones tried to play it cool, but let’s be real — he’s been ready to give Seacrest the Nomi Malone treatment since Day 1.)
Even without Seacrest on hand to incite panic, Monday’s Idol remained a dramatic two-hour experience, which ended with the elimination of three more singers… and the official reveal of Season 17’s Top 14. But before we find out which contestants are proceeding to next week’s first live episode,...

A whopping 78% of readers who voted in our recent poll have their fingers crossed that this quirky 25-year-old dog walker from Wilmington, De will give it “another chance.” The other 22% of poll respondents thought that Margie’s personality was “way too annoying” and hope she’s done with the reality TV show altogether.
