Our Flag Means Death was cancelled by Max earlier this year, which was hugely upsetting for fans of the pirate comedy. There was hope that Our Flag Means Death might find a new home on another streaming service, but creator David Jenkins has confirmed that the series is on its way to Davy Jones’s locker.
“I can officially confirm that we’ve reached the end of the road,” Jenkins wrote on Instagram. “At least as far as this sweet show is concerned. After many complimentary meetings, conversations, etc it seems there is no alternate home for our crew. Thank you to all of you who sent us out with tremendous love and care. Your campaign was noticed across the industry. But more importantly it made all of us who worked on this show better able to deal with the loss.“
Jenkins continued, “To you wonderful fans: thank you. You are lovely and earnest.

Our Flag Means Death creator David Jenkins has raised the white flag on his former Max comedy finding a new home.
“I can officially confirm that we’ve reached the end of the road,” Jenkins posted on Instagram. “At least as far as this sweet show is concerned. After many complimentary meetings, conversations, etc., it seems there is no alternate home for our crew.”
Max canceled the comedy starring Rhys Darby and exec producer Taika Waititi in January after a critically acclaimed two-season run.
Praised for its queer storylines, Our Flag Means Death has an impressive 94 percent score among critics and 93 percent rating with viewers on Rotten Tomatoes. Season one of the series consisted of 10 episodes and aired in March 2022, with the renewal coming for a shortened eight-episode run that wrapped in October.
Fans of Flag were vocal, launching campaigns to save the show and fundraising for billboards in New York and London.

If TV ratings were measured by intensity of fan devotion instead of viewing figures, Our Flag Means Death would currently be sailing its way to six seasons and a movie. People who love David Jenkins’ queer 18th century pirate comedy seriously love it, but according to Max, there aren’t enough of them to justify its continuation.

Our Flag Means Death fans are really doing all they can to “Renew as a Crew,” following Max‘s cancellation of the pirate rom-com starring Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi. Created by David Jenkins, the series tracks the unlikely love story between ill-equipped pirate wannabe Stede Bonnet (Darby) and the infamously fierce Blackbeard, a.k.a. Ed (Waititi). Originally debuting on Max in 2022, Our Flag Means Death returned for its second season in October 2023 and was unceremoniously canceled on January 9 of this year. (Credit: Nicola Dove/Max) But the show’s fervent fanbase isn’t taking the cancellation as the final word, rallying to save the series for a third and final season as intended by Jenkins. Their efforts have brought the “Renew as a Crew,” campaign all the way to Times Square as fans raised funds to run the advertisement reading “Save Our Flag Means Death.” But that’s...

Struggling to earn the respect of his potentially mutinous crew, Stede’s fortunes changed after a fateful run-in with the infamous Captain Blackbeard (Taika Waititi). Dig your business socks out from the back of your dresser drawer because it might be business time before you know it! Rhys Darby recently spoke with Deadline at the Creative Arts Emmys and informed the outlet that a Flight of the Conchords reunion could be on the horizon. Flight of the Conchords is a comedic musical duo out of New Zealand featuring Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie. Flight of the Conchords is also the name of the band’s HBO series that launched in 2007 and ran for two seasons before getting canceled. Darby plays the band’s manager, Murray Hewitt, in the show, and now there are rumblings of getting the band back together.

New Zealander Rhys Darby made a splash in the U.S. in 2007 for his portrayal of band manager Murray Hewitt in HBO’s Flight of the Conchords, a series that ended after only two short seasons. And while he and his co-stars Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie have all moved on to other projects, the trio might surprise fans one day with a reunion.

As always, shows have been canceled this year and shows have been renewed. One critically acclaimed program that still seems to be in limbo is “Our Flag Means Death.” A comedic re-imagining of the not-so-notorious “Gentleman Pirate” Stede Bonet, the series finds the 18th Century amateur swashbuckler, portrayed by Rhys Darby, finding himself as he battles other pirates and tries to command a very queer crew in the Caribbean. Oh, and working through the ups and downs of a romantic relationship with the one and only Blackbeard, played by Taika Waititi.

Even on television, first love isn’t always equated with everlasting love, and 2023 celebrated couples in their fifties, sixties, and seventies taking a later-in-life leap across various settings and centuries. A will-they/won’t-they doesn’t lose its sparkle with characters of a certain age, and horniness doesn’t have an expiration on shows like Only Murders in the Building and Julia. Hearts already bearing the scars and baggage from previous relationships add layers to some of this year’s most memorable match-ups.
Although age doesn’t always mean experience, and in the case of The Gilded Age, spinsterhood is no longer the defining feature one person thought it would be. In the second season of Our Flag Means Death, Ed (Taika Waititi) and Stede’s (Rhys Darby) romance blooms, depicting a middle-aged coming-out narrative that underscores it is never too late for a personal discovery.

Released in 2014, Next Goal Wins was a phenomenal documentary from directors Mike Brett and Steve Jamison which followed the American Samoa football team as they attempted to persevere following a historic 31-0 loss to Australia. Much in the vein of Grey Gardens, Man On Wire, and Marwencol, the acclaimed documentary has been dramatised into a feature film, this time by Taika Waititi and The Inbetweeners co-creator Iain Morris.
Next Goal Wins focuses on Dutch American coach Thomas Rongen (Michael Fassbender), whose only option to evade being fired is to coach the American Samoa team. As he arrives with a bad attitude and a drinking problem, it soon dawns on Thomas that he may be able...

This post contains spoilers for "Our Flag Means Death" season 2.
"Our Flag Means Death" is unlike anything else on TV. Max's pirate rom-com is irreverent and offbeat, alternating between bloody high seas battles and tender love confessions. It's a show that sets itself apart from its contemporaries in pretty much every way, from its hilariously anachronistic, sometimes surreal take on history to its vision of a world where heterosexuality is far from the assumed default. Unsurprisingly, the show's unique humor and thoughtful portrayal of queer relationships have made it a massive word-of-mouth success.
The series gained fans (many of them creatively and joyfully obsessed) hand over fist in the weeks surrounding its first season finale. Actors involved with the show called it the most rewarding job they'd had to date, fans began cosplaying as characters at cons, and "Our Flag Means Death" ended up well on its way to becoming a pop cultural phenomenon.

Heading into season 2, it wasn't entirely clear what to expect from "Our Flag Means Death" upon its return. Creator David Jenkins's quirky, queer-friendly pirate comedy about a bunch of horny weirdos sailing the seven seas is the rare streaming show to explode in popularity after starting our fairly slow, largely thanks to its romantic pairing of fancy soft boi Stede "The Gentleman Pirate" Bonnet (Rhys Darby) and his tattooed, leather-wearing, bad boy Bf Edward "Blackbeard" Teach (Taika Waititi). Would the series commit the faux pas of attempting to pander to its fans by giving them exactly what they seemed to want, or would it chart a more courageous course?
Thankfully, Jenkins and his crew elected to take the series in a darker and occasionally even upsetting direction without ever losing the wholesomeness and humor that made season 1 so lovely, in the process bringing greater depth to its characters. At the same time,...
