It seems today that all you see is cartoon shows with little continuity.
Nevertheless, Seth MacFarlane’s Family Guy, as obscene and silly as it may be, decides to switch up its “canon” every so often. Whether it’s due to the passing of a cast member, attempts at a ratings stunt, or (unintentional) acts of progressiveness for its characters’ development, the Griffin family’s world within Quahog for the past 25 years of airing has only expanded.
Here are some of the most significant canon changes in Family Guy history.
Revival With Yolo Energy
Due to low ratings, Family Guy faced the cancellation gun early into its lifespan. But in its death, the great bird-is-the-word got around via DVD sales and rerun airings on Adult Swim. Thus, in its rebirth on Fox in 2005, the show became cruder, bloodier, and edgier than ever, both in its art style and spirit. The...

“Family Guy” creator and executive producer Seth MacFarlane shared insight at PaleyFest on whether or not the Griffin family will ever make it to the big screen in a full-length feature film. The show’s cast also brought the house down Friday with a live table read of upcoming episode “The Edible Arrangement” and nine performances of musical classics from the series as the show celebrates its 25th anniversary.
Without giving too much of the goodness away, the episode the cast did a table read for — written by Travis Bowe — is titled “The Edible Arrangement.” It’s centered on Lois and Stewie bonding after consuming a few of Brian’s weed-infused gummies. The episode features the first time Lois has ever heard Stewie talk, which provides Stewie with the perfect opportunity to tell her all about his old plot to murder her.

Saturday Night Live set its sights on The Floor, Fox’s new game show hosted by Rob Lowe that has contestants facing off in a series of quiz duels.
On SNL’s version, tonight’s host Shane Gillis played the defending champion David, who triumphed in the first round by correctly identifying a glass of orange juice.
But when it came time to identify famous faces, Gillis was continually stumped by a series of pictures featuring Black politicians and personalities. As pictures of Frederick Douglass, Martin Luther King, Maya Angelou, Colin Powell and Aretha Franklin flashed on the screen, a panicked Gillis said things like “I know him, but I’m nervous” or “I’m a huge fan of hers” without saying their actual names.
Fear even had him miss the names of Stephen Curry and Oprah Winfrey.
But when an image of Cleveland from Family Guy appears, Gillis’ David gets it right.

Despite being on network television, Seth MacFarlane's irreverent animated sitcom "Family Guy" can get away with a lot of edgy humor. With over 20 seasons under its belt, the show's reputation precedes it, and audiences are well-aware that the series is actively trying to push buttons through provocative satire and parody. However, during the show's original three-season run, before it got canceled and eventually resurrected thanks to a second wind from DVD sales, "Family Guy" didn't have the same power. That's why Fox initially refused to air one particular episode.
"When You Wish Upon a Weinstein" now sits firmly as part of the third season of "Family Guy," but it became an infamous installment after Fox axed the episode before it even aired. The episode in question finds dimwitted patriarch Peter Griffin (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) scammed by a man selling volcano insurance, something wholly unnecessary in Quahog, Rhode Island.

A version of this story about “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama and Limited Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
There’s a somber reason Niecy Nash-Betts is happy about her fourth Primetime Emmy nomination. “I feel like it brings more attention to Glenda Cleveland and her story (that was) going unheard, overlooked and underserved,” Nash-Betts said of her character in “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” the first season of a planned Netflix anthology series, “Monster,” from Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan.
Though “Dahmer” is ostensibly focused on serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, it
seeks to give a face, voice and story to his victims. One of the indirect victims was
Cleveland, Dahmer’s neighbor, who repeatedly called the police after suspecting that the Milwaukee killer was harming people in his apartment. Despite her pleas, Cleveland was ignored by police.

When it came to Jeffrey Dahmer’s apartment in Netflix’s Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, director Carl Franklin pictured a gritty fish tank filled with yellow-green algae and lifeless fish. He wanted to reach audiences on a visceral level, placing viewers in the notorious serial killer’s putrid living room from the victim’s perspective.
“I wanted to create more of a sensory world as opposed to just a set — something that would evoke a certain aroma or a stench, let’s say, rather than aroma,” Franklin tells Rolling Stone.

By now, actress Niecy Nash-Betts has more than proved that she can excel in genres other than comedy. A quick look at her past Emmy nominations say as much, with an Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie nod for “When They See Us,” Ava DuVernay’s poignant limited series about the Central Park Five, listed right next to an Outstanding Television Movie nomination as an executive producer of “Reno 911!: The Hunt for QAnon.”
Yes, she can perform it all, but what her work on “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” proves is that Nash-Betts has the ability to elevate projects in a way where one could argue they would not work without her. Playing Glenda Cleveland, the titular serial killer’s next-door neighbor who desperately tried to alert authorities to Dahmer’s evildoing, only to be belittled and dismissed.

Carl Franklin was deep into work when he learned of his Emmy nomination — the second in his career — for directing the first episode of Netflix’s “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.” “I was in New York, as I was doing another pilot on a miniseries, and they knew about it! So someone told me, ‘Hey, man, you’re nominated! And congratulations!'” the director shares with Gold Derby during a recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). “And I started noticing these texts that were coming in, and then people said, ‘You were nominated for an Emmy!’ And I said, ‘Really?!’ So I hadn’t expected to, so I thought, ‘That’s cool, man, that’s nice.'”

While there wasn’t a whole lot that Matthew Flood Ferguson remembered about notorious serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer before he boarded Netflix’s “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” as the production designer, he did have a vivid memory of his reaction to first learning about the murderer’s youngest murder victim, 14-year-old Konerak Sinthasomphone.
“The one thing I remember is… [that] actually, [Sinthasomphone] escaped, and then the police brought him back to Jeffrey Dahmer; Dahmer lied, said that they were lovers, and they left him there,” Ferguson recollects during a recent webchat with Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video interview above). “And I remember hearing that and just being so horrified by it.”

Fox's Sunday night animation lineup is about to collide, if only for a moment. In a clip from this week's episode of "Family Guy," which was just released by Entertainment Weekly, Peter Griffin (Seth MacFarlane) ends up at Bob's Burgers restaurant, where he pulls up a stool alongside Homer Simpson. It's less a major crossover moment than a quick gag, but "Bob's Burgers" star H. John Benjamin does make a voiceover guest appearance as the chef we know and love from the ever-underrated wharf restaurant.
The scene, which you can watch now below or on the Animation Domination YouTube channel, starts with Peter Griffin instantly trying to find a way to extricate himself from the situation when his wife, Lois (Alex Borstein) starts describing a dream she had the night before. "Eh-heh," he says while backing away, first out of the house and then down the street before eventually backing...

Ryan Murphy was joined by the cast members of “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” for a press event held Saturday on the Netflix studio lot. Emmy winner Niecy Nash and two-time Oscar nominee Richard Jenkins discussed their dramatic supporting roles in this horrific true tale starring Evan Peters. The limited series is quickly approaching one billion hours streamed on Netflix, making it the most successful project of Murphy’s career.

The 10-episode series depicts the life of the notorious serial killer, who, over the course of more than a decade, murdered 17 boys and young men. It took Murphy and his producing partner, Ian Brennan, more than 10 years to get it made. The show is currently predicted to be nominated for Best TV Movie/Limited Series at the Golden Globes according to our latest odds.

Over the past couple of months, Niecy Nash (“Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story”) has swiftly been climbing the ranks of Gold Derby’s SAG Awards predictions. Well, she has now officially broken into our Top 5 for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress, joining other potential nominees Amanda Seyfried (“The Dropout”), Lily James (“Pam and Tommy”), Julia Garner (“Inventing Anna”) and Emily Blunt (“The English”).
What’s interesting about these predictions is that Nash is a supporting player in “Dahmer” who, if our rankings are correct, will compete solely against leads. Remember, the Screen Actors Guild combines lead and supporting television performances for dramas, comedies and limited series, so it’s always tougher for featured players to break through. Case in point: the last time this specific SAG Award category was awarded to a supporting actress was Vanessa Redgrave (“If These Walls Could Talk 2”) in 2000.

Fans of Star Trek: Discovery were given some exciting information at New York Comic Con.
We got an exciting new trailer, photos, and confirmation that there will be three new cast members.
Callum Keith Rennie will star as Rayner, Elias Toufexis as L'ak, and Eve Harlow as Moll.
Series star Sonequa Martin-Green joined the panel virtually from set in Michael Burnham’s captain’s chair.
Rayner is a gruff, smart Starfleet Captain who holds a clear line between commander and crew – he leads, they follow.
Rayner’s all about the mission, whatever it may be, and he doesn’t do niceties along the way; his feeling is, you get the job done and apologize later.
He has a storied track record of wartime success, but in times of peace he struggles.
Collaboration is not his strong suit. That said, if it serves the greater good he’s willing to learn...
