Grammy-winning rapper and producer Dr. Dre has been in the music game for over three decades. Throughout that time, he’s solidified his spot in hip-hop history as a rapper, producer, and record executive, working with artists from Eminem and 50 Cent to Mary J. Blige and Alicia Keys. But before the global fame, he was a young person with big dreams growing up in southern California.

It seems like it’s harder than ever to keep up with the Kardashian-Jenners these days. Aside from Rob Kardashian’s major (and explicit) Instagram meltdown with his on-again, off-again girlfriend Blac Chyna, Khloé’s copyright woes with designer Destiney Bleu, and those blackface allegations leveled against Kim, Kendall and Kylie Jenner have also found themselves in the midst of a controversy that shows no signs of stopping just yet. The sisters have already experienced their fair share of drama in 2017, from Kendall’s divisive Pepsi campaign that was quickly pulled from airways to the allegations Kylie faced that she...

Jerry Heller's funeral had lots of West Coast rap connections ... none named Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, The D.O.C. or Mc Ren. Heller's service was packed to the gills in the San Fernando Valley -- Heller's friends, family and even Daz Dillinger were all on hand ... but no trace of N.W.A. Jerry Heller’s family says he would have wanted the surviving members of N.W.A at his funeral, but they probably shouldn’t expect an appearance by Ice Cube. The rapper-slash-actor told Detroit’s 107.5 over the weekend that he had “no emotions” regarding the passing of Heller, who managed N.W.A for four years, on Saturday. “I didn’t have no emotions,” Cube said during the interview. “I’m glad I’m with DJ Yella, I’m glad I’m with Mc Ren today, it’s only right. “I ain’t gonna pop no champagne but I ain...

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony is usually an embarrassing thing, fashion-wise. But that wasn’t the case for N.W.A members Mc Ren, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and DJ Yella, maybe the first people in the history of the awards to get the clothes right. American slavery should be an impossible subject for an ongoing TV series to handle. Done right as a standalone movie like 12 Years A Slave, or a miniseries like the iconic Roots or Bet's more recent The Book of Negroes, it can create a difficult but incredibly cathartic short-term experience. But it's a lot to ask an audience to tune in week after week, season after season, to a story of degradation and unfathomable cruelty that any kind of serious treatment of this blight on our nation's history requires. Do it properly, and you chase away viewers in a hurry. Lighten things up, and you risk diminishing the subject to the point of offensiveness. Underground, Wgn America's latest period drama (it debuts Wednesday night at 10), finds a clever solution to that problem. It's set in the pre-Civil War South, and most of its characters are slaves on a Georgia cotton plantation,...

Over the weekend, the Screen Actors Guild Awards (or SAG, for those who don’t know) did their best provide both questions and answers in regards to the Oscar race. On the one hand, much of what we suspected to the the Academy’s likely favorites remains as such, but on the other…there are certainly some potential upsets brewing. SAG was just one of the precursors over the weekend, as the Art Directors Guild and Ace Eddie announced their winners as well, which you can see below, but the SAG victors are what we’ll be focusing on today. So, let’s chat about that guild’s results! SAG managed to both clear up and confuse on Saturday. Basically, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Brie Larson wrapped up their Oscar wins in Lead Acting categories, while Alicia Vikander likely became an unbeatable frontrunner as well in Best Supporting Actress. As for Best Supporting Actor,...

Welcome back to This Week In Discs where we check out tomorrow’s new releases today! Straight Outta Compton Five young men share the struggle of growing up on the rough and tumble streets of ’80s Los Angeles, and as they dodge the effects of violence, poverty, and institutionalized racism they discover one more thing they have in common. Music. The five — Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy-e, Mc Ren, DJ Yella — form N.W.A. and soon take the nation by storm with rap lyrics that speak to the truth, both real and perceived, of their situations. Their rise to power finds fans and detractors, but it also finds conflict within their ranks that turns friends into combatants. Through the ups and downs N.W.A.’s influence remains. I made the mistake of missing F.Gary Gray’s latest in theaters due to an aversion to rap music — I do the same when country music biopics open — but it really...

Vulture is speaking to the screenwriters behind the year's most acclaimed movies about the scenes they found most difficult to crack. In today's post, Straight Outta Compton's Oscar-nominated screenwriters Jonathan Herman and Andrea Berloff reveal the logistical hurdles they had to overcome in writing a chaotic performance scene in their N.W.A biopic. The sequence at Doo-To’s Club – where Ice Cube performs “Gangsta Gangsta”— was very tough to get right because there are about a dozen different elements happening simultaneously, and they all had to track: the grind of Dre and Yella’s life in the World Class Wreckin’ Cru, yearning for the big time, unappreciated by their boss, Lonzo; bringing Eazy and Mc Ren into the scene while clocking the danger of Crip-affiliated guys breezing into Blood-affiliated territory; Cube’s white-knuckle tension as he girds himself to perform on a potentially hostile stage; capturing his explosive...

And while most sequels don’t begin preproduction until well after moviegoers experience the first, Ride Along 2 was a follow up that the filmmakers knew they had to do.

From an idea, to the script, to filming and finally making its way to the big screen, every movie starts with a great story. The cinematic stories of 2015 inundated audiences with inspiring tales of compassion, happiness, courage and love while being spread over the various genres.
Moviegoers saw the rise of Nwa, true stories of an ongoing cover-up and the economic catastrophe whose effects are still being felt today, journeys of harsh survival but also ones of inspirational hope – both here on earth and on distant worlds – and a re-imaging of the beauty and chaos of the post-apocalyptic world that is Mad Max. Even the new story about Rocky Balboa proved to be a fascinating one as we watched the torch being passed to a new generation. We couldn’t help but feel a whimsy of nostalgia from a visit back to Philadelphia as well as to that Galaxy Far Far Away.

The 22nd annual SAG Awards nominations were announced this morning and it's full of surprises! Sylvester Stallone, loved by critics and the National Board of Review for his performance in "Creed," was ignored. So was Kristen Stewart's supporting performance in "Clouds of Sils Maria." Matt Damon, who was so good and carried "The Martian" from start to finish, was also missing from the list.
But here's what I love about the SAG noms. First, Sarah Silverman's first dramatic performance in "I Smile Back" was embraced. And I'm also happy with the inclusion of "Room's" Brie Larson and the fantastic child actor, Jacob Tremblay. The endearing "Carol" also received noms for both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, and Saoirse Ronan's performance in the beautiful "Brooklyn" also received a nomination.

Nominees for the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were unveiled this morning in Hollywood, with a fair amount of surprises to be had. Leading the pack is Trumbo, which picked up three nominations, then a large batch of films behind it with two each: Beasts of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight, and Steve Jobs.
Perhaps most surprising is no mention of The Hateful Eight, which has one of the year’s best ensembles. Also of questionable note is the inclusion of Helen Mirren for Woman in Gold, a film all but forgotten (we suppose Harvey Weinstein’s campaigning indeed worked). There’s also the welcome nods to Michael Shannon in 99 Homes and Sarah Silverman in I Smile Back, as well as an ensemble nod to Straight Outta Compton. Check out the full list of nominees below ahead of the ceremony on Saturday, Jan.

There’s also the welcome nods to Michael Shannon in 99 Homes and Sarah Silverman in I Smile Back, as well as an ensemble nod to Straight Outta Compton. Check out the full list of nominees below ahead of the ceremony on Saturday, Jan.

Trying to match the talent of N.W.A.s hugely talented musicians must have been a daunting task for Straight Outta Compton.s cast. But, as those of us who have seen the film can attest, they each do sterling work in their roles. And it turns out that they went to great lengths in order to try and match Dr. Dre, Eazy-e, Ice Cube, DJ Yella, and Mc Ren.s antics. In fact, they even went as far as to re-record the entire Straight Outta Compton album, which was released in 1988. USA Today have reported that Corey Hawkins, O.Shea Jackson, Jr., Jason Mitchell, Neil Brown, Jr., and Aldis Hodge, who play Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy-e, DJ Yella, and Mc Ren, respectively, each went into a studio to re-record N.W.A.s debut album. During the end of the summer, any surprise critical and financial success story seems to generate Oscar buzz. Frankly, that’s sort of the case whenever an early year or pre awards season release exceeds expectations. This year however, we have an interesting case to study in the biopic Straight Outta Compton, about the seminal rap group Nwa, which has gone above and beyond any of its goals so far. Now, some are beginning to wonder if the Academy might have an interest. I remain skeptical, but it’s well worth taking a look at. Perhaps the investigation will reveal something? Let’s find out now… The film is a look at the rap group Nwa, how its members came together, and what kind of an impact they had on the culture. Started in the city of Compton, California in the mid 1980’s, the music would spread across the world...

Ever wondered what one of N.W.A’s biggest hits would look like if it was rapped by the Muppets? Well now is your chance to find out. While the biopic “Straight Outta Compton” is dominating the box office, Kermit the Frog and Fozzie Bear are recreating one of the groundbreaking hip-hop group’s biggest hits, “Express Yourself,” by way of cleverly edited footage from their own hit film, 1979’s “The Muppet Movie.” Fozzie proves he is a genuine gangsta rapping lines originally performed by Dr. Dre, with additional lyrics from Ice Cube and Mc Ren, as M.W.

Straight Outta Compton has made quite a large impact since hitting cinemas on Friday. And while cities across the United States are currently reveling in the on-screen antics of Ice Cube, Eazy-e, Dr Dre, DJ Yella, and Mc Ren, there is one place that hasn.t been able to see the film yet. Almost cruelly, that place is Compton itself, because the Los Angeles neighborhood doesn.t actually have a cinema in which it can play. The F. Gary Gray-directed film is primarily set in the titular region, which is situated just south of downtown La and has a population of around 95,000 people. You.re probably wondering how such a large hub doesn.t have one cinema. Well, according to Manuel Pastor, a USC professor of sociology talking to CBS News, the lack of a cinema is because the area is a "low income area" that has "been heavily...

Straight Outta Compton emerged as the number one movie in America during its opening weekend, and it helped push Universal past the $2 billion mark at the domestic yearly box office, making it the fastest studio to reach that mark. But you know who.s not all too happy about the film? The real Mc Ren. The original member of N.W.A. spoke out about his depiction in the film, and, according to him, it wasn.t accurate. On the Saturday the 15th, the rapper tweeted the following: True fans know my role in the group as far a lyrics are concerned, don't let the movie fool you about my contribution to the group. . Mc Ren (@mcrencpt) August 15, 2015 Aldis Hodge of A Good Day to Die Hard and The East portrayed Mc Ren in Straight Outta Compton, and his character definitely took a backseat in relation to the other members. ...

Straight Outta Compton, F. Gary Gray.s N.W.A. biopic, hit theaters and quickly became the number one movie in America. It even broke a record for Universal, making it the fastest studio to surpass the $2 billion mark in a year at the North American box office. Better still, it has the respect of (most) critics and audiences alike. That.s not to say that it.s not without its hangups. Starring O.Shea Jackson Jr. as Ice Cube, Jason Mitchell as Eazy-e, Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre, Neil Brown Jr. as DJ Yella, and Aldis Hodge as Mc Ren, the film tracks the rise and fall of the iconic hip hop group. That alone is a lot of material, and Straight Outta Compton attempts to deliver it all in the span of 2 hours and 27 minutes. As I wrote about in my review, it leaves certain moments in the ...

Grossing an estimated $60 million this weekend, the N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton has already been established as one of summer's most unlikely non-franchise blockbusters and bona fide box-office smashes, dwarfing the openings of higher-profile offerings such as Fantastic Four and Terminator Genisys. (And, if that number holds, it will have had a better first weekend than even Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, the crowned king of this season's name-brand entries which debuted with a domestic haul of $55.5 million according to Box Office Mojo.) But in hindsight, Compton's sleeper-success story isn't that surprising at all.
