“Party with the Hardy!” exclaims Gold Derby senior editor Marcus James Dixon, announcing that Laine Hardy had been crowned the Season 17 “American Idol” winner. “We all kind of thought that Laine would win,” Dixon continues, “but still a part of me wondered, ‘Is Alejandro Aranda gonna pull this off?'” Dixon is joined by fellow senior editor Susan Wloszczyna and Gold Derby contributor Denton Davidson to discuss Laine’s victory, whether they think judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie wanted Alejandro to win, Madison VanDenburg‘s nerves and the greatest performances of the finale. Watch the video above to hear their full thoughts.
“I had Laine winning,” Davidson responds. “But as the show went on, I started to really think Alejandro was going to win. It just seemed like the momentum was going in his favor and the crowd was on his side. By the end, I thought there could be an upset.

In one of his first interviews since winning “American Idol” Season 17, country singer Laine Hardy just told Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest that he can’t wait to “get started working on music.” Laine took the red eye from Los Angeles to New York City in order to appear on “Live with Kelly and Ryan” in the wee hours of Monday morning. “I slept like three hours on the way here,” the 18-year-old mumbled to the morning hosts while donning his flowered suit jacket. Watch the interview above, which also includes Laine’s performance of his original song “Flame.”

Adam Lambert returned to the American Idol stage to perform Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” alongside Season 18 contestant Dimitrius Graham Sunday.
Though they performed a truncated version of the classic track, Lambert and Graham did not skimp on any of the bombast. The pair traded verses early on while Graham did an excellent job anchoring the famous opera section while receiving an assist from a small choir of back-up singers. One of the most viral contestants of “American Idol” this season was someone who didn’t even make it to the live shows: Shayy. This 18-year-old high school student from Midlothian, Va recently lost her vision due to a brain tumor, which the doctors were only partially able to remove. Shayy’s initial audition of Andra Day‘s “Rise Up” was the most-watched audition of Season 17, which is why it was so shocking to see her eliminated in the Hawaii showcase round. The good news for “American Idol” fans is that Shayy returned during Sunday’s season finale to perform “Rise Up” with — who else? — the original singer herself. Watch the video above.

A new “American Idol” winner was crowned Sunday night, but not before Adam Lambert returned to the stage for the season finale for a pair of performances that included his new single and a duet with eliminated contestant Dimitrius Graham Sunday.
The show concluded with Louisiana teen Laine Hardy showered in confetti as he was crowned the winner over runner-up Alejandro Aranda. Hardy closed the show performing his coronation song, “Flame,” as he was embraced by his fellow Idol contestants.
Lambert was part of a star-studded finale that included performances by “Idol” season 4 winner Carrie Underwood, Weezer, Kane Brown, Dan + Shay, Andra Day, Jon Pardi, Montell Jordan, Kool and the Gang and judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie.

Hey, "American Idol" fans. Happy Sunday! Tonight, May 19, 2019 was indeed the big night! Finale night! That's right, guys. This long season finally came to a freaking end tonight, and a winner was revealed. All Of the final three contestants: Alejandro Aranda, Laine Hardy and Madison VanDenburg performed two, new songs. They also took part in some artist collaborations. Tonight's Live finale lasted a freaking, full three hours. That's the first in its history. I guess ABC is a lot more generous with their airtime than Fox ever wanted to be. To kick off the show, Judge Lionel Richie, mentor Bobby Bones and a whole bunch of other people hit up the stage to sing, “Dancing on the Ceiling.” Eventually, the top ten Idol contestants returned to join Lionel on stage. After all of that, Laine Hardy hit the stage to sing his first song of the night, which was, "Home" by Marc Broussard.

American Idol wrapped its 17th season on Sunday, delivering a three-hour extravaganza filled with live music, familiar faces and, as always, crippling disappointment.
In addition to the three remaining contestants — Alejandro Aranda, Laine Hardy and Madison VanDenburg — a number of eliminated singers also returned to perform in the finale. Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon joined forces with Katy Perry, while Laci Kaye Booth shared the stage with Luke Bryan. Dimitrius Graham also came back to sing with Adam Lambert, while Alyssa Raghu performed with Kane Brown, and Uché got his dance on with Kool & the Gang.

“We all think someone else is going to win!” exclaims Gold Derby senior editor Marcus James Dixon when he is joined by fellow senior editor Susan Wloszczyna and Gold Derby contributor Denton Davidson to discuss the upcoming Season 17 finale of “American Idol.” The race for the title is tighter than ever as Alejandro Aranda, Laine Hardy and Madison VanDenburg prepare for the Sunday, May 19 extravaganza. Watch our video recap above as we hedge our bets on the eventual winner, discuss the upcoming finale performances and ask if Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie should return for Season 18.
“I think Madison [will win],” says Wloszczyna. “I think she is at the point where potential is turning into real chops. She made ‘Your Song’ a new song with the soul she put into it. For those reasons I am picking her.” For Davidson’s prediction, he is banking on the Southern charmer to claim victory.

Even after all these years, “American Idol” is still TV’s most-watched reality show. Per TV By The Numbers, ABC’s “Idol” topped all others for the final week of April with 2.0 million viewers in the all-important 18-49 demographic. In fact, it was the #2 program of the week in that age group behind only “The Big Bang Theory” with 2.3 million. As for its closest reality TV competition in the demo, “Survivor” came in with 1.9 million while “The Voice” (Monday) scored 1.5 million and “The Voice” (Tuesday) earned 1.2 million.

“I don’t think either one of them appreciably stepped up their game,” says Gold Derby senior editor Susan Wloszczyna when reacting to the recent ousting of Dimitrius Graham and Uche on Season 17 of “American Idol.” She adds, “Dimitrius looked miserable! Not every contestant can make it through to every round of American Idol. That's just the cold hard truth of the competition, and as sad as the judges were to see Uche and Dimitrius Graham go last night, they don't regret not using their saves on the two singers, even after they saved them going into the top 10. "It was the right answer," judge Lionel Richie told E! News after the show. "It was the right decision because of the fact that we want to hold that vote for something that really comes up. It was difficult. We love them so much. It's family now, but we have to make those decisions." "We have to also trust what America is voting for in some ways,...

It is always sad to watch contenders dismissed at this point in “American Idol” since each person in the Top 10 is a talented individual. But after seeing each being saved by a judge last week, it felt more hurtful as Uche’, who perhaps should have picked a song from anything but “A Goofy Movie,” and Dimitrius Graham, who seemed to pin his hopes on that last note of “You’ll Be in My Heart,” were let go in the final seconds of Sunday’s show.
One can understand why Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan would withhold saving them again, since they already gave them a second chance. But with such a top-notch Top 8, you could see why they wanted to keep the save in their pocket for later.

On Sunday’s “American Idol,” two of the Top 10 contestants were eliminated: Dimitrius Graham and Uche. They performed admirably but the competition on Disney Night was just too tough. The Disney songbook includes dozens, if not hundreds, of iconic tunes from the past eight decades. “I 2 I” from “A Goofy Movie” is not one of them. Unfortunately, Uche found this out the hard way during “American Idol’s” Disney night when he was eliminated following his performance of the song that judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan and guest mentor Rebel Wilson had never heard of before. In other words, Uche really goofed up.

Hey, American Idol fans. Tonight is bad news for any of you who were fans of Uche and Dimitrius Graham because they unfortunately weren't good enough to make the cut tonight. Tonight's Live show was the very first show to actually go live from the west coast to the east coast. The viewing audience watched and voted simultaneously. Then when the show was all said and done, the votes were tallied up and the results were revealed. The top 10 contestants had to all sing classic Disney songs. Bless their hearts. The three judges: Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan were on hand. The contestants were mentored by funny actress Rebel Wilson. The judge's "save" was back in play. So, they had the option to save any of the contestants that needed it. To get the night started, Uche hopped on stage to sing the song titled, "Eye to Eye" from a Goofy Disney movie.

Dimitrius Graham‘s journey on “American Idol” Season 17 almost came to end during Monday’s Top 14 results episode, but Luke Bryan was so moved by his “save-me” song of Billie Eilish‘s “when the party’s over” that he just couldn’t let him go. “I have changed my mind three times in 10 seconds,” Luke said before announcing, “I have to lean on the sheer emotion I felt: Dimitrius.” Did Luke make the right choice by saving Dimitrius and advancing him to the Top 10? “American Idol” judge Lionel Richie was so entertained by Uche‘s “save-me” song of Rihanna‘s “Diamonds” that he jumped the gun by instantly saving him during Monday’s Top 14 results episode. Instead of giving a normal critique of Uche’s performance, Lionel walked up on stage and escorted the 24-year-old Sugarland, Texas resident to safety, proclaiming “That’s my pick!” when host Ryan Seacrest asked what he was doing. No one expected Monday’s episode of American Idol — which narrowed its crop of finalists down to 10 — to be easy, but I don’t think anyone expected it to be this messy, either.
From Ryan Seacrest’s uncomfortable walk-and-talks with the contestants (most of whom responded with one-word answers in a desperate attempt to move on) to his super awkward announcements of the individual results (those fake-outs were… bad), the season’s first official live episode was… kind of a mess. And that’s not even including the times that the judges literally discussed how awkward this show’s elimination process is.

‘American Idol’ recap: Top 14 sing for America’s votes on Night 12 of Season 17 [Updating Live Blog]
Six weeks after the second season of “American Idol” hosted by Ryan Seacrest began on ABC, America finally gets a chance to vote as the Top 14 take to the stage on the April 14 episode. These finalists survived a grueling process that began with winning over the three judges — Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie — at a regional audition and getting a ticket to Hollywood.
A whopping 150 plus would-be winners made the trip to La La Land, before being cut to 40. That group then competed both individually and in groups before the judges decided on the Top 20. This score of artists were then asked to sing both solo and in duets with celebrities and convince the three judges that they deserved a place in the Top 14.
